Sixth entry
Wadup yo, so this tumblr looks more like a how difficult can making animations work with controllers be, turns out it was harder than expected, anyways now I’m ready to face any kind of animation in my life and for now they are ready for my car in game. So that’s a win I guess. Now I’ll be cleaning my code and make it so other cars can extend from this same car because I’m gonna AI the shit out of this game with: AI for cars around the city, AI for things happening within the city, AI to connect stuff happening in the city so you have to react to “random” events-. Also I have to add a lot of signs and signals from semaphores to car lights and so on. This is gonna take at least one more weak but I wanna give more time to developing now I’ve been programming for about 3 hours a day, but I want to make it more like 5 or 6 hours, real hours you know? Because there’s always procrastinating + work hours which can fill the rest of the day.
Anyways I’m out. See you around.

Fifth entry
Hello people from the tumblr, today’s blog is just to tell you I need to step up my game, I mean not my videogame but my developing game. In order to do so I’m gonna try to get some major thing done today. It’s time for me to place that godamned animation on my main car, make an interface out of it and then use that class for the rest of my city’s cars.
Anyways, good luck with anything you might be doing.
See ya later alligator.

Fourth Entry
Hey guys, turns out making controllers for a game is actually easier than all you’ve seen on my previous posts, today I decided to map my movement keys to some other keys and after that I pretty much deleted half my code I had to make the movement how I wanted it to be. Also what I stated on my last post about something pretty minor about our car not moving as it should got also solved with this new keys I asigned to movement. Time to go back to the animation I want it to play.
Never stop developing.

Third entry
Well, now I’m not sure what to do. I’ve completed the most basic aspects of the game, here’s where I should start doing more advanced stuff. But what to do first is the question I’ve been doing to myself for the past twenty minutes…I watched some of my notes and decided that it’s time to give this city some life. So be it, I’ll start adding some car’s and bringing them to life. I’m thinking of the best way to load them into the game; maybe a list of cars would be a good idea so I can maybe make it a bit random on how they appear. But now that I think about it our only car doesn’t have any animations! So let me get that done so the other cars are just a copy of this one. Making a virtual city is so entertaining, now I understand why games like Sims or Cities: Skylines are so popular. Damn I started working on that animation but got sidetracked about something so minimal for everyone except it bothers me so much; I noticed our car still has horizontal movement(arrow keys), but that shouldn’t be happening, so I did the same I did for vertical movement to not allow it to move. Turns out it looks awful, so here I am spending hours of development in something so minimal as pressing the breaks less cartoonish. Life is great.

Second Entry
Now that the design process is in pause, I'm doing some of the programming for the game, starting to program means I've gathered the assets I need, added the collision to my tiles and did some artwork to actually place everything on scene.
I'm using Unity for my game, I know Unity is better for 3D according to some people but I need to port this thing, and I don't want to risk some portability issue with some other framework, so yeah.
Anyways right now I have my main city done , It's not really a city but more of a suburb, anyways I'm going to be working over it most of my game and then I'll start growing it to a real city.
Tumblr media
What I have done:
Controls are working now as I wanted them to work, because I had some clumsy moments with them because I was working on an Isometric view and I had no idea of how to manage movement until I found this image and now it's working as I want it to.
Tumblr media
Collisions for all city elements are done
Map and car are working as if they were actually together so I'm happy
What needs to be done:
Right now my goals for this week are doing some image editing on some of my assets because I'm using a free assets pack that I found on this awesome website called https://opengameart.org/ which is pretty useful to make prototypes but I know that eventually I'll have to do my own assets.
Regardless I'm going to make some adjustments to some of my tiles because I thought they had a white stripe in the middle of the street, but turns out is was some kind of raised median, so yeah, time to do some work on my favorite editing tool other than Photoshop which is Inkscape, it gets the job done and it's not a hard program for beginners nor too basic for more advanced stuff.
I just did some minor editing, using layers so I could see what I wanted from another tile pretty similar to what I wanted. This is not hard once you get the grip of it, so yeah, I'm done with that, they look alright so I'm replacing them in game and call it a day.
See you in the next post 🎮.

Third semester, second year (no shit). So the reason I am doing this is because I    spent all of my summer watching TheStriveToFit videos (If you do not know her please check her channel) and I am too lazy to make a youtube blog about life in college. And also I think it’s a great idea to keep track of the things you do in college, so here it is. PS. I realize no one will read this but it’s fun doing this regardless.
ᴄᴏʟʟᴇɢᴇ ʟɪғᴇ
So my second semester was a mess, I missed almost half of my classes, my day started and 8 am and I was miserable, I had 0 interest and I think I never did my homework without getting help, so yeah, it sucked.
I spent all of my summer in Germany, so I did not revise any of my classes. But now I’m back and I’m kind motivated? So I should take advantage of that and start this new semester with the right foot. I have only 4 classes: Superior Algebra II, Math III, Programming & Computer Modelling and Data Structures. Last semester I failed both Data Structures and Superior Algebra II, not because they were hard but I had 0 interest and the professors were kind of assholes. I left everything until the ñast minute and I did not understand the concepts I was given nor I cared enough to study them. So yeah, I failed like a pro. I honestly felt that computer science wasn´t for me, everyone was so good at coding and knew what was going on meanwhile I had no fucking clue. Then I wen to Köln,Germany to study german for 2 months, and then my teacher there told me that drop out from my mexican college to appyl to a german university was not a good idea (that was one of my dreams) , so the new plan is to end my major here and then do my masters in Germany. THis plan actually works better for me beacuse now I can focus on all of my classes.
So that`s my first entry, I will write as much as I can but remember that college is a soul-consuming experience, so I will try my best.
Thanks for reading and good luck!

First entry
Let's begin with who I am. My name is Yoshua Alfaro, I'm a computer science major with a huge passion about videogames. The main reason why I got in this major was because I used to like videogames so much that I wanted to learn how to make my own. So I did, it took me more than expected but I'm pretty much done with my credits and I'm currently working towards my thesis(I know, it's only a bachelor's degree why would I need a thesis? Well that's how it works here in Mexico(I'm mexican btw)).My experience doing games started making mods to the game Tibia when it was really popular, I started working on custom maps for it and starting to learn this script language called Lua, that was like my first approach at doing something close to game development, but to be honest I was so young I didn't really knew what I was doing until I actually learned how to program. After that I took my first course in design and programming of video games here at my university, I didn't know what to expect but there I met my favorite teacher of all times and also the best course I've ever had of something I like. There I developed three games, one was a modified Asteroids in this framework called LÖVE, I also made a modification of a mario bros in Phaser( spoiler: I love Phaser) and the last one was a game which had the intention to make young people (from the age of 15 to 18) be more attracted to reading, using this thing called gamification and I ended up developing that game and even making a paper  about what we were doing and presenting it in a small conference of human-computer interaction.
Tumblr media
After that I took a small break in making games, but now I'm working on this project which you'll be reading about.
The name of the game is not yet decided but here we'll call it Car Car Revolution 2017.
Car Car Revolution 2017 is a game made to replace a driving test about all kind of situations that would happen in a city while driving, especially in a city as big as mine (Mexico City). Using gamification we want to take what would be an exam and make it a fun experience where you'll have to make decisions in the game and when you're done with all the levels from the game it would mean you're ready to put yourself in a car. *Note: this is not a driving simulator, this just means you should be able to take rational and conscious decisions in real life as in the game, if you just decide one day is totally ok to go at 300 km/h we can’t guess you’ll do that (or maybe we will at some point..).
Right now I'm done with making a paper prototype and we've tested some basic mechanics there, mostly what will be on this first digital prototype, we've also been through like two or three iterations for the game design per se, but we've got more work to do (me and my project manager(?)/thesis advisor).
Anyways, I'm gonna end this entry here and I'll see you around, I'm gonna keep writing this blog until I'm done with this game. Hope this helps someone through the same path of making a game by yourself. Don't give up. Stay strong. Eat your vegetables. You know the drill...
See ya.

what people think coding is: type some stuff, the stuff does other stuff, you go to the next thing
what it actually is: i was trying to make a box expand and collapse for nearly and hour and it turns out i'd forgotten to type 1 (one) symbol and now im crying at midnight clicking a box over and over again because it finally works
