i personally don't understand the whole "i love ace/chet/brill/bev" deal. like, do they even have lines?? are they even relevant to the story whatsoever?? aren't they just part of the ensemble?? i guess the same logic can be applied to evie and sylvia so my thoughts aren't perfect, but i just don't like the whole my favorite outsiders character is just a glorified ensemble member thing. but i haven't actually seen the musical, so maybe they do have lines/benefit the story but as far as im aware right now, they're not even true characters?

RE cherrycola: In the book Cherry says (abt Soda): "Your brother is one doll". Low key if people are going to ship parry off Paul punching Darry in the face and being friends pre-canon, I really don't have an issue with cherrycola. She thinks he's cute. He's a flirt. Whatever I'm not a huge fan either but I do think Cherry has a thing for trouble makers (IE "Cherry went for boys who were bound for trouble") and fandom is supposed to be fun. So like I think people can ship what they want. Yeah it's not entirely textual or anything but really neither is any outsiders ship. I don't really think it's like a deep mischaracterization of either of them, especially if their relationship is explored post canon! or as an AU! My soapobox. Not to get preachy but yk my perspective on cherrycola if literally anyone cares. Idk if this is a hot take probably not.

sometimes I wonder if people in this fandom ever read the source material because some of the takes I see on here are genuinely the opposite of how people are characterized. no, two-bit would not take over for darry if anything happened to him, no dally isn't secretly soft he's mean and has a cruel streak and genuinely only cares about his friends, no steve doesn't hate ponyboy he's just rough and closed off and pony is jealous of him, the only rivalry they have exists in ponyboy's head. yes, ponyboy is an unreliable narrator, he's fourteen. no ponyboy is not a spineless, tearful baby he's a teenager who canonically hates being coddled, what's not clicking?

Genuinely I cannot take Cherry being shipped with any man seriously. I really wish I could to because the fan content for like Cherrycola and Cherry and Bob makes up a lot of the content about her and I love her and want to see stuff about her, but everything about Cherry just screams lesbian to me. I don’t get the Parry hype. Paul has no discernible personality, and it always feels like Darry is portrayed very out of character when it’s written. It’s the same thing as CherryCola. Cherry and Soda are always so mischaracterized.

Darrel Curtis, the lookalike of his father and the spitting image of failure.. to himself at least. He thinks he’s the worst brother, while Pony feels like they don’t love him enough through the book/movie/musical until you get past a point, and while Soda feels he’s doing all he can and he’s just terrified, Darry feels horrible. The poor guy thinks him literally and figuratively breaking his back for his brothers isn’t enough, it’s HIS fault Johnny died henceforth HIS fault Dallas died and hell he’s also the reason Bob was killed. No matter how many times he knows in the back of his head it’s not his fault, he’s just a kid. He will continue to blame himself for the shit he had no way of fixing

As someone who's a massive fan of both, it's so bullshit when book fans act like they're better than musical fans (which is surprisingly common), like can we not just coexist and get along over our shared love of this story???

also I see a lot of book fans say that posts abt the musical shouldn't use #the outsiders as a tag but I feel that any post about the outsiders should be free to use #the outsiders then you can get more specific like #the outsiders musical or #the outsiders book

also this isn't rlly a tumblr thing im js complaining but im so tired of every time I say anything about the movie being met with being told how its a terrible horrible film (which is also surprisingly common irl for me) like let me enjoy one of my favourite things without the negativity😭🙏
