Something that's always fascinated me about show dog breeding is the creep towards a shorter muzzle and domed, chunkier head that I've observed in several breeds and I always wonder what fuels these trends, what groupings of shapes us humans consider more aesthetically pleasing to look at than others. I think that accentuated stops may read as more striking in a silhouette, perhaps there's even some of the neotenic feature theory at play somewhere. Idk as an artist this topic intrigues me because ultimately they are aesthetic choices.
Disclaimer bingo:
-Yes these are cherry picked examples, but they're all dogs that were awarded champion titles (only exception is the Saint because I wanted a clear side view of a swiss dog specifically, but being one of the few dogs whose photographs were chosen to be in the club's studbook also doesn't make this a complete nobody).
- No I'm not insinuating that all the shorter muzzled dogs are all BOAS risks for impaired breathing, brachycephaly is a spectrum and BOAS risk is multifactorial. This is mostly a discussion on aesthetic preferences.
- No i'm not insisting all the historic dogs were definitely healthier than the modern dogs or that the modern dogs must be currently sickly or were bred by bad people.
- Yes this image omits postcranial conformation, I wanted to focus on heads specifically. Many vintage titled dogs indeed had legs and toplines that weren't the most structurally sound compared to today's standards.

The breed standard for modern Persian cats calls for the nose and mouth to be in “vertical alignment” with the eyes 😭

i bring a very “you’re describing a shih tzu or perhaps a chihuahua” to the “what dog breed should I get based on these lifestyle needs” conversation that people who were hoping I’d say “corgi” really don’t like
