regulus banned james from cooking after the third time he set their kitchen on fire.

james argued that it was regulus’ fault for giving him two more chances.

regulus argued that he thought someone couldn’t possibly cook that badly and had assumed it had to have been bad luck.

“Mister Black, can we speak for a moment?”

Regulus, who had been collecting his things in the back of the Ancient Runes classroom, looked up to see Professor Uganka looking at him with a little frown on her face.

He nodded, shooing his friends away, and approached the front desk. “What is it?” he asked softly, a bit confused about why she’d asked to speak to him.

Wordlessly, the Professor presented him with his most-recent essay. At the top, Acceptable was written in bold letters. “I’m concerned,” she said after a moment.

Blinking, he shifted his weight. “Is ‘Acceptable’ now a failing grade?” he asked lightly, knowing that it wasn’t.

“No,” she replied mildly. “But Mister Black, you are capable of so much more. Normally you’re..well..meticulous about your work. Is everything okay with you? Is something going on at home, perhaps?”

He almost let out a snort of disbelief. For six years, his home life had been hell-on-earth and now, now, that he’d finally gotten out, now that he was finally safe and happy with his brother and the Potters, now…she was asking questions? “No,” he mumbled, stiffly. “I’m very happy, actually.”

And it was true. For the first time in his life, he was relaxed. He felt loved. He no longer felt the crippling need to be perfect, to pour every ounce of his energy into being the best. Instead, he could just focus on enjoying himself. So yes, he’d rushed through the essay to go on a date with James, but…he didn’t regret it.

Still, the Professor eyed him. “If you’re sure,” she sighed.

“I am.”

When he walked out of the room, head held high, he saw James waiting for him. 

“Everything alright?” the older boy asked with a concerned smile, immediately wrapping an arm around his waist and taking his bag with his free hand. 

“Perfect,” he replied with a little smile.

He meant it.
