Lest we forget
It has been 95 years since the guns on the devastated Western front of the First World War fell silent, as Germany and the Allies agreed to cease fire and work toward peace. Though that peace did not long last, every Nov. 11 since then, on the 11th minute of the 11th hour, we have paused to reflect on that great conflict, and, tragically, the many conflicts that came after it.
As we gather to remember on Monday, we hope people will reflect not just on the sacrifices of earlier generations, but also the veterans who still need our help today. The origins of Remembrance Day, in the blasted landscapes of Europe almost a century go, are distant and grow ever more remote from our modern life with each passing year. But the lessons our grateful nation learned, and the obligation we still owe those who have served us, must always remain close to our hearts.. (Photo: THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld)

The most recent edition to the BBC Essential Mix series is none other than Hessle Audio co-founder and legendary genre-defying DJ; Ben UFO. The label which has been an outlet for the likes of James Blake, Untold and Blawan (to name just a few) will be celebrating its 25th release this year, so to help celebrate we've been gifted two dark, techno-soaked hours of Ben UFO's collection of self-described 'inspiration', gathered and collected over the past year. True to form, the mix is multidimensional with stand out tracks from The Traveller, and Pangaea (Hessle co-founder) as well as previously unreleased material from label mainstay Untold and UK House producer Paul Woolford's new Jungle inspired Special Request project. Who's afraid of the Big Bad Bird? This Saturday, October 5th 2013 Barclay Crenshaw, better known to the world as Claude VonStroke, will be stopping by Exchange LA joined by Newestra's very own La Muerte, for a superlative evening filled with his own unique brand of techno and dirty-house. Since launching the pivotal Dirty Bird Record Label back in '05, producing two critically acclaimed studio albums as well as spinning one of the most highly regarded Fabric mixes of the entire series, Vonstroke's name has become synonymous with what we have come to appreciate as being the very best aspects of Detroit House/Techno. Over the label's eight year history Dirty Bird has become known for their individualistic approach in production style. It has served as a home not only to Vonstroke but as a starting point in helping launch the careers of Eats Everything, thriving UK House producer Julio Bashmore and countless others. This month will mark Dirty Bird's centennial release and VonStroke's third studio album to date entitled Urban Animal. Lead single 'The Clapping Track' is indicative not only of VonStroke's sound and ability as an artist but also to his perspective and approach regarding music in general: that it's supposed to be fun. That's what you get at a Claude VonStroke show, the promise of sweat, screams, and laughter; if you aren't here to dance, then get the fuck off the floor!

Ever since the unveiling of the house infused, tin-pan-synth-dream that is *J.A.W.S in Disclosure's scintillating summer Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, everyone is asking the same question: just who is Lxury? Immediately rumours began flying every which way – some credible, others: utterly ridiculous. The most popular and prominent said that it was in fact Disclosure making music under a pseudonym, however time has shown that revelation to be false – sort of. While the track is very much Lxury's, Guy Lawrence does lend his production talents to the track and his presence is impossible to overlook. The track harkens back to the sounds of Disclosure's early days, reminiscent of 'Tenderly/Flow' or even The Carnival EP. Yesterday Lxury released the B-side entitled 'We Do': a much more reserved specimen than its counter-part but equally impressive in its delivery. Listen below, experience, and understand why Lxury is one of the most exciting new producers to watch in 2013. *Debut single for Disclosure's Method label.
