it's   been   months   since   they   escaped   nibelheim   ,   months   that   they've   been   on   the   road   now   ,   &   weeks   since   he's   last   seen   civilization.   zack   is   exhausted   ,   mentally   more   so   than   physically   ,   &   if   cloud   were   awake   ,   zack   thinks   he   might   be   hitting   the   end   of   his   rope   as   well.   but   he   can't   afford   to   think   about   how   tired   he   feels   ,   how   heavy   his   arms   are   (   it's   not   cloud   that's   heavy   ,   never   cloud   )   ,   or   how   awful   this   whole   thing   is.

he   can't   afford   to   break   down   ,   not   now.

he's   talking   to   no   one   ,   to   empty   air   ,   but   he   hopes   cloud   can   hear   him   ,   somehow.   zack   doesn't   want   to   think   that   cloud's   gone   ,   that   this   is   for   naught.   because   cloud   will   wake   up   ,   he's   strong   ,   so   he'll   be   okay.   cloud   will   be   fine   ,   &   all   the   fighting   ,   the   running   ,   the   hiding   can   stop.

zack   is   careful   when   he   sets   cloud   on   the   bed   ,   sighing   into   the   silence   of   the   room.   he   was   lucky   to   come   across   an   abandoned   cabin   out   here   ,   or   at   least   ,   lucky   to   find   one   that   was   still   standing.   he   casts   a   glance   at   cloud   ,   taking   one   of   the   blonde's   hands   in   his   own.   his   shoulders   fall   for   the   first   time   in   months   ,   &   zack   lets   himself   feel   just   a   bit   of   it   all   ,   lets   exhaustion   seep   through   the   cracks.
