I recall at least one of you guys having worked with livestock animals. Why are cows so damn indestructible while horses keel over and die if mercury is in retrograde or a dog barked in Kazakhstan?
gettingvetted here.
Let me tell you a story about how livestock animals work.
In the beginning, God created the horse. God looked at the horse and saw that it was beautiful and strong. “However,” God said, “it breaks too easily.”
Then God created the cow. God looked at the cow and saw that it was more durable than the horse, and tasted good to boot. “However,” God said, “it poops too much.”
Then God created the goat. God looked at the goat and saw that it was perfect.
God looked around and saw that he still had some spare bits of fluff on his work table, but no brains to put into it. So then God created the sheep.
Now let me tell you what my equine surgery professor said on the first day of class.
“Horses are only interested in two things: homicide, and suicide.”
And that’s all you need to know about horses.

The fact that riders can remount after a fall and continue; and actually MISS OUT a jump that they’ve had 2 refusals at and continue the course is just a recipe for disaster. In the vast majority of instances where the above happens in modern pentathlon it’s due to shoddy riding and has very little to do with the horse. Being eliminated for those faults in straight up show jumping isn’t just to rule out weak contenders; it’s foe the safety of the horses and riders involved. I have no idea why the rules are so different in the MP, but it made incredibly hard watching indeed. I can’t imagine why any owner would ever offer their horse up to be used for this (a load of money, I guess???), but I feel for the grooms and regular riders of those horses - as well as the horses themselves, of course. A lot of damage could be done over the course of those 2 days, and not just to the reputation of equestrian sports.
The show jumping part in modern pentathlon is straight up animal abuse. Any equestrian discipline requires mutual trust between rider and horse which you can’t have if you get a random horse for 20 minutes.
It feels like a slap to the riders in the dressage, show jumping and eventing category as they ride and prepare horses several years for these competitions and any sane rider stops their run as soon as they realise the horse does not feel comfortable competing. Because first and foremost, the health and feelings of the horse are always the main priorities.

On the flip side, Jun Woongtae rode a beautiful round and wouldn’t look out of place in a straight up SJ comp.
Props to the commentators of the pentathlon equestrian events for being incredibly diplomatic

Tokyo 2020 Dressage Stars . Something a little bit different. Some very quick scribbles with a splash of colour, of the equine stars of the Olympics. Took some screenshots from the routines and drew from them as reference. Wow! It’s really something else watching the best of the best! All the horses looked like they were dancing. Makes me want to go riding again. Also, it’s so frustrating when these quick scribbles have SO much more character than my ‘finished’ pieces 😓
