Zenyatta (Overwatch) Icons for RP

I’ve been looking everywhere for Zenyatta icons for a while and there’s none to be found, so I thought I’d share the ones I eventually ended up making! (: They’re all from in game screenshots, so there’s not as many as I’d like (especially with Zenyatta’s super expressive face), but I hope it helps any of you out!

//Alright, let’s get this show on the road!

I’m gonna start with influences and goals, I guess? So if I’ve got my timelines straight, Zenyatta was born/created after the end of the Omnic Crisis, and before Overwatch fell apart (please correct me if I’m wrong), which would mean he did not experience the actual war, or being taken over by the God Programs, but was instead born into a world already filled with hatred for the omnics. I think not knowing the time before the war is quite crucial in the way he ends up developing his way of thinking. He’s experienced enough hatred to understand the organics’ point of view, and not enough for him to have his hopes of coexistence shattered, and it’s a unique combination that enables him have a very balanced approach to things.

Some would argue that makes him naive, and I think in part, I’d even go as far as agree with that. But it’s a necessary kind of naivety, because it’s what allows him the patience to not give up on people easily, but instead believes in the world’s ability to change for the better. Despite the wisdom he’s accumulated over the years, Zenyatta has, after all, only existed for 20 years - he’s still learning, expanding his horizons, adding new things to his database each day.

I’m not sure if we’ve got Mondatta’s age, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he’s older than Zenyatta, and has, perhaps, maybe even experienced the Omnic Crisis himself. I think in part, it’s why they ultimately disagree about their approach; Mondatta sees strength in numbers, the principle of the herd when it comes to beliefs, while Zenyatta believes in a more personal approach. He knows it’s a slower process, but he believes it’s deeper, and more lasting in long term.

Despite that, I think Mondatta and Zenyatta shared a very close and meaningful bond made of mutual respect. It was Mondatta after all that started Zenyatta on the path he now walks, and despite the younger omnic starting to think in his own ways later on, he never forgot the original moral stance that brought him to those conclusions. Mondatta was, I like to believe, often hard on Zenyatta for going against his teachings (even before he decided to depart on his own), but did, essentially, consider Zenyatta to be one of the greats of Shambali. Zenyatta was devastated once news of Mondatta’s passing reached him, and stopped his travels for a three day reflective meditation to put his mind back in order. It was one of the rare times that truly tested his resolve, but he eventually emerged stronger, and with reaffirmed belief in his principles.

Another person of importance in Zenyatta’s life was most definitely Genji Shimada. As much as the omnic influenced Genji’s life and turned it around, the connection went both ways. The fact that he was able to make the young ninja understand his newly acquired form, renew the link between his mind and body and most of all, gain his trust, was something that erased many still existing doubts about his approach. Being trusted in that manner was both an achievement and new experience for the young omnic, and he’s found himself appreciative of this kind of spiritual intimacy on more than one occasion. It also provided him with a more personal insight into the world outside of Himalayas, the one he had, so far, mostly merely observed without involvement. They balanced each other out in the best way, something they never knew they needed but most definitely worked out in their favor.

Lastly, I’ll touch on the subject of what Zenyatta’s personal happiness consists of, and I think first and foremost it consists of having an organized, harmonious mind. I think his ‘Walk in harmony.’ for healing allies and ‘There is disquiet in your soul.’ for his enemies speak volumes on the subject. The way I see it, he believes that once your thoughts are in order, it’s easier to see a clearer picture of the world in front of you, with less clouded judgement. It’s why he is often found in a state of deep meditation, where he rearranges and links newly acquired experiences with what he has stored from before, so that none of it is left astray. It’s how he processes the world around him, and still maintains a calm, open minded presence. Chaos and discord within one’s mind, on the other hand, would have the exact opposite effect on an individual - they would cause instability, vulnerability, inability to perceive things from another perspective, and ultimately leading to limited knowledge of the situation, which is why he uses ‘discord orbs’ on his enemies.

Dang this turned out super long. But it was really interesting expanding my thoughts on Zen like that :D Thanks for the question!! ♥
