MALINCHE By:Laura Esquivel
Spañiard Hernán Cortés & Indian woman Doña Marina (Malinalli)
The story is all about Malinalli’s life and how she conquered Mexico. She was one of the slaves of Hernan Cortez, and his interpreter or some will say she is the “The Tounge or the Translator”. Her duty was to translate and speak different languages for her Lord, Hernan Cortez on his conquest. Cortez is lucky with Malinalli being his interpreter during his conquest. It was Malinalli’s abilities as a linguist that allowed the meetings and negotiations to be arranged between Cortés and the Aztec ruler, Moctezuma. Additionally, Malinalli was able to communicate with the various tribes whose territories they had to march through, thus saving the conquistadors from hostile attacks. Some will say that Malinalli is a traitor or a hero to her people.
Being a translator or an interpreter for someone is a challenging job to do. We should think twice before we say the words that comes out into our heads. I think Malinalli is being used by Hernan Cortez for his own benefit for his conquest, but I cannot judge because it was Malinalli’s decision to join with his Cortez. The lesson learned here in this story is: that we should always find and trust the right people, the people who can do good things for you.

SILKÂ
[excerpt]
By: Alessandro Baricco
For a living, HervĂ© Joncour bought and sold silkworms. He was thirty-two years old. Silkworms are referred as to Gold. Herve and Hara that has no asian eyes lady from Japan met, they had a cup of tea. Tasting its finest while looking at each other eyes in a while.Â
From the moment he sees this woman, Hervé is captivated, and though he is married, he returns to Japan to this woman three times. it was known that this woman Hara is a mistress of the wealthy village lord. There was lot of hardships since they do not speak the same dialect. They have the difficulties to have conversation but the burning desire is still there.
There was a connection in their first meeting. It is something that could be remembered easily because of the feeling that Herve feels towards the girl.
They had the deal concerning about the silkworm eggs. It was this scenario that Herve has to decide whether to accept the deal or not. Not long enough, they gain stare at each other’s eyes; the expression of “longing to be with someone” was visible. Its as if "fate will bring them back" says it all in that conversation with the cup of tea.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time By: Mark Haddon
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN THE STATE OF CONFUSION?
WHERE YOU DOUBT? WHERE IN YOU INTERPRET EVERYTHING AS LITERAL? Well then, everyone may somehow experience to be unsure, lost and baffled but let’s talk about someone who has a different condition with different view of perspective.
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a complex set of neurological disorders that severely impair social, communicative and cognitive functions. By means of cognitive, it is the consciousness intellectual activity. There are lots of things affecting to the people with this disorder, and that is facing the horror of the community. The humiliation and discrimination from the members of the society in school or in workplace is never been an exception for them. But in special cases, autistic is not fully dumb and stupid that some people think because they are filled with an above average IQs that most normal person are desperate of. We should bear in mind that autistic kids come from love and not from person. We often misunderstood their existence, now laughing and judging will never help develop themselves. In this world where differences can be a source of conflict or ridicule, there is a need to be open to the people’s differences.
In excerpt in“The curious incident of the Dog in the night-time” was that a person with an ASD syndrome was the curious dog who happens to be so confuse of the things being said by the people around him, that symbolizes the night-tiime, where its dark and hard to see. He tries to understand, analyze, comprehend; doubting if he misheard anything but no, he can’t. he just can’t. Its ironic that the story with its complicated title has so much contradiction to the content. The story tells the the perspective with autism and its pretty amazing that he wrote in many metaphors in which he has difficulty to test.
Therefore, I realized that they don’t deserve any humiliation they get from humans. They are full of wisdom which is amazing and they have the full capability to think that we, able-bodied can’t even answer basic and primary situations. They may be mysterious; we got to make fun of what’s running on their minds yet inside of it are questions that are worth to be answered. They are special and unique with their rare gift.

THE TESSERACT By: Alex Garland
In this story, the author was referring to our country that was observing and experiencing the people, streets and agriculture of the Philippines. The author or the foreigner finds that the Philippines is a weird country. The word “Heat” that was being referred in the story, it tells that country’s weather temperature was way too hot. Global warming is one of the environmental issues that the Philippines is having right now. It was unusual for Sean to see people celebrating their birthday in a fast-food chain, that we filipinos are so fond of. He thought that it was different compared in his own country.
This story tells us that foreigners that visit the Philippines tends to say that this country is weird at first, but when come to observe, learn, and adapt its culture; tourist or foriegner then understand a 3rd world country. It is much different living in a 3rd world country.
The first time I went to Manila was when I was grade 4 or 5. I barely remember. My tita brought me there for vacation. Manila was so crowded back then and I couldn’t understand tagalong very well back so I had to ask my cousin to translate some words for me. The worst thing in Manila was its traffic and its weather temperature that until now is still has no major solution for tgis problem. My tita brought me to “The House of Representatives” because she had a meeting there and she was a congresswoman back then. I can say that our country is seemingly weird at first but when I tried to understand the people and the culture here in the Philippines, I would say that it is pretty normal for me of what’s going on in here.

Love Yourself
Life is something we should cherish, We’ll never know when we will perish, Love and learn each day, Be with people that makes your day
Life is something we’ve been blessed, Don’t listen to people that can cause stress, Follow your passions, you’ll be fine, With the right attitude, you will shine
Nobody’s perfect, be who you are, We need to accept ourselves, little by little, You have to love yourself before, Others even start to care
Look at the night sky, we are all like stars, Shining and blazing through the city lights, Reflecting our imperfections and flaws, Love Yourself

THE SILENCE OF SNOW [Excerpt from Snow] By: Orhan Pamuk
According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), there were a total of 1,844,406 OFWs in 2015 – 1,437,875 land-based and 406,531 sea-based.
Data over the years suggest that there is an increasing trend in the number of deployed OFWs. What does it feel like to be way from home? Does it feel you sick or somehow give you relief? In a situation like this, mostly you are forced to sacrifice yourself for the betterment of the state of your family. It is never easy, that’s the truth. You can’t let go of the idea of missing somone everyday, missing your home and missing your daily routine in that place.
There are certain people that has been away for months usually the worst thing is when their contract is upto years. Every minute there’s an heart ache and shedding of tears yet that’s the only way to minimize the pain, total endurance they say. How can they survive despite of the wide gap they have for their love ones, why do they continue to be seperated from them? Nah, its not only because they wanted to provide all their needs, its because they wanted to secure a good future for their family.
After time, they go back to their hometown. It may not be the same for others but its the same exact spot, they reminisce. A feeling of nostalgia, they remember the moments. It may seemed too vivid to imagine, but the beauty of place has always remembered by their heart. Their joy to experience the same ocassion is prevalent in their twinkling eyes. There is still a dropping tear but not caused by pain but the reason is happiness. Its always good to be back, to meet the people you missed so much and to do stuff you haven’t done in a while.

A LOW ART [excerpt from The Penelopiad] By: Margaret Atwood
She who was blinded with by truth She who pains and grieve in both She that have only known everything When she was already gone in life by a ping!
It was her husband who have started The cause of misery that for now is vivid Rumors, gossips and cheap talks were created Little did she merely even knew about it.
She never dig deeper She put his lies and foolishness in cover She disregard the unwanted feelings Though she has witnessed some of it
She wanted happy endings in those days Keeping the right doors locked to remain their love in blaze Their relationship that she hoped not to end She let his mistakes stay in bend
Now that she’s dead, she knows everything His trickiness, foxiness and wiliness Its the official version of the story behind That she chose to ignore when she was alive
Right at that moment she was the topic The content of the town’s gossip She wanted to object But can’t find a way to speak in their dialect
She waited stories about herself some more She’s the subject of the tale to bore She described herself as a low-art voluntarily She who was named as Penelope

A GOOD BODY By: Eve Ensler
I was walking down the hall and all I think was how do I deal with the people surrounds me, those who are staring as if judging me by meters in distance. Its kind of disturbing, no its pretty distracting. I took steps with heavy heart, counting the seconds with the murmurs behind and a smirk along my side. I came to ask if there’s something wrong with me. Do I look awful to give me that kind of disgust expression or am I just really interesting to make fun of?
My self, my poor physical appearance. Don’t I deserve respect? Self-pitying would never help so can I get rid with these rude treatment and begin to act with no pressure that’s heating me? Yet I remember, my mom. She’s been reminding me that I am beautiful. And yes, I must believe her because she’s the only person whom she knows my totality. Yes, I should believe her because she’s the only person who witnessed my growth and knows the type of person I am. Yes, I have to agree to her because she let me realize the importance of a kind heart that I possessed.
I stopped at my track, trying to absorb everything bit by bit. Reloading my confidence and taking away my self-conciousness. Then I took another step with A fulfilled smile crossed in me. With no aloofness, pitiness and insecurities.
Still, there they are. In their spot, with usual rolling of eyes and judgmental look. I’ve moved on and still, they remain.
