Carrot for Strawhat?
Okay, so I’ve been wondering about something for a while now. Why are so many people saying that Carrot’s going to be the next Strawhat crew member? Now, I’m not trying to say this in a condescending way or anything, I’m just genuinely curious. I think Carrot’s a cute side character and all, but I don’t really see anything that fits the criteria for becoming a Strawhat. What I mean by that is there are certain points that all of the current Strawhats have in common, which are:
1. They all have a sympathetic or tear-jerking backstory that explains how they became the person they are today.
2. They all have a dream or a long-term goal that isn’t easily achieved considering the world they live in.
3. As a Strawhat, they all have a role on crew.
-
Let’s start with that first one. Anyone who reads or watches One Piece knows that the Strawhats have some of the saddest and most heart-wrenching backstories in the entire story. Their histories range in how tragic or sad they are, but they are all definitely sympathetic and explain how each Strawhat became who they are now. We currently don’t have that for Carrot. Now, some may draw comparisons to Robin as she wasn’t given a deep backstory before becoming apart of the crew, she just kind of showed up on the ship without invitation and said she was joining. However, from the moment she was introduced Oda had built up this air of mystery around her to the point that you really wanted to know more about her, so when she joined the crew it was like a confirmation that we would get to know more about her as time went on. Carrot is cute and all, but there’s not really that sense that there’s more to her past than meets the eye.
-
On to number 2. Each Strawhat has shown that they have a dream or a goal that they want to fulfill, which served as a large portion of their motivation for why they set out to sea in the first place. And when considering the kind of world that One Piece takes place in, these goals are not going to be easily reached by any means. Once again, Carrot hasn’t shown a dream or a goal that fits with these points. One could say that her dream could be to travel with her friends, but that dream could easily be achieved by her simply joining the crew. It’s not a bad dream, but I don’t think it’s enough for me to really get on board and root for her.
-
The final point I want to cover is each Strawhat’s role on the crew. Obviously Luffy is the captain, Zoro’s the first mate or second-in-command, Nami is the navigator, Usopp the sniper, Sanji’s the cook, Chopper is the doctor, Robin the archaeologist, Franky’s the shipwright, and Brook is the musician of the crew. Out of these 9 roles, there are only really 4 that are actually essential and needed for the crew’s survival on the seas. Those roles belong to Nami, Sanji, Chopper, and Franky. Without these four, the Strawhats wouldn’t have gotten very far on the Grand Line. When you think about it, an archaeologist and a musician are roles that aren’t actually needed to sail on the seas, but when it comes to the story of One Piece Robin’s role is very important. And Luffy had been wanting a musician on the crew long before Thriller Bark, so when Brook joined his role made sense. There’s also another side I wanted to make with this point, and that’s the familial role each Strawhat has. The way I see it, Brook is the grandpa, Franky and Robin are the parents, and Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper are the siblings. It may seem a bit silly, but I think the familial dynamic of the Strawhats gives them more character as a group and as individuals. While Carrot doesn’t seem to have a clear role as a crew member, she does fit into the family dynamic pretty well.
-
When considering Carrot for Strawhat, she doesn’t check off all the boxes in the criteria. Some may say that this list of criteria isn’t necessary, but i think it’s important in determining who has the most potential for becoming a member of the Strawhat crew. In fact, there are other characters who do meet all of the criteria for being a potential Strawhat. Law, for example, fits this list perfectly. I think it’s an understatement to say that his backstory and relationship with Rocinante really tugs at the heartstrings. He had a clear goal that seemed impossible considering the odds stacked against him, and he’s a doctor, a very important role for any crew to have. However, there are 3 things that stop Law from becoming a full-on Strawhat: They already have a doctor, Law already has a crew, and he’s already accomplished his goal. Even though Law does seemingly fit the bill for potential Strawhat, it’s those 3 elements that stop him from actually having that potential.
Now, potential Strawhats don’t always have to immedietely check off all the points on the list, as in the case with Robin, and more recently, Jinbei. First, let’s see why Jinbei is considered a prime candidate for next Strawhat. For one, he does have a sympathetic backstory with his connection to Koala, and the lost of Fisher Tiger. Also, he does have a clear goal: to better relations between humans and fishmen. The only thing that isn’t so clear is what his role would be on the crew. There isn’t a role like navigator or sniper that Jinbei could easily fill, but from a familial standpoint I could totally see him as an uncle.
While his role doesn’t seem too clear, Jinbei has gotten a lot of development and focus in the story so far. He has a past with Ace and Whitebeard, seemingly, he aided in the attempt to rescue Ace, and was the one who helped Luffy pull himself together after that attempt failed and resulted in Ace’s death. Out of all the current potential Strawhats, Jinbei makes the most sense as to actually become a member of the crew because of his relationship with them. And Luffy made it clear back in the Fishman Island Arc that he wanted Jinbei to join the crew. This is why even though Jinbei doesn’t meet all the criteria, him becoming a Strawhat makes perfect sense and just seems like where the story is going.
All of this cannot be said the same for Carrot. From my point of view, she just seems like another fun and quirky side character that we see all of the time in One Piece. Some may say that she, as a Mink, will add more diversity to the crew, but I don’t see that as really strong point. There were characters back in the Skypiea arc that could’ve added more diversity, but none of them joined. There were dwarfs back in Dressrosa, but they only joined the Grand Fleet. Look, it’s not that I dislike the character or anything, as I’ve said before I think she’s a really cute character. But I don’t think cuteness alone is enough to solidify you as a main character. Chopper is very cute, but he’s also a fully-rounded and developed character. If anyone has any legitimate arguments as to why they think Carrot will be the next Strawhat, please let me know. I want to here your opinions and am open for discussion.

One Piece ワンピース [Totland Arc / Chapter 844] : Captain “Strawhat” Luffy vs Sanji “Black Leg” Vinsmoke
“I’m going on a Hunger Strike!! Come hell or high water! I won’t budge from this spot until you come back! Don’t make me wait long Sanji! Without you I won’t..I can’t..BECOME THE PIRATE KING!!”
Damnnn Oda-sensei, back at it again with the sad emotions!! GUHH this chapter.. so many onions. I DON’T EVEN LIKE VEGETABLES DAMMIT. I hate how the crew keeps splitting up in the recent arcs, they need each other! Marimo woulda cut that crap out instantly, but thats probably why Oda sent him away, our dear 1st mate. Germa66 still garbage, but SANJI-KUN!! #MODOTTE #BAKA
