i think everyone has that one favorite ship that they always come back to no matter what

llorumi is mine. i was there when 1st episode of s8 came out and i’ve been obsessed with them. i changed fandoms a few times, but i will always come back to them.

sometimes i still see people debating on why Lloyd was reaching out to Harumi and wasn’t even listening when his dad was trying to change in crystalized.

this is one of the most defining part of Lloyd’s character. he always believes people can do better, that people can change, that people are capable of good. he cares cares and cares.

because:

1. he knew the real Harumi and he knew her pain and where her anger came from. he knows she is not all evil, because she showed him, who she really is. and Lloyd knows there is something to hold on to, that there is something worth fighting for. when he reached out to her, she would do everything to push him away and show him or tell him something that told him “she is not listening, but hey, there is hope after all!”

2. his dad, on the other hand, until crystalized showed him nothing (not that it’s all Garmadon’s fault). Lloyd, fully believing, that the man Harumi brought back is his father, went to prison and his dad made sure he got the message that he is not the man he was.

Garmadon said “he has no son”, and i think this stuck with him particularly. but that didn’t make him stop trying to reach out to him. you have whole s9 and s10 for that! but when he, as Harumi, pushes away his son, he doesn’t give Lloyd any hope that other people do.

Lloyd shows him pictures -> Garmadon says sentimentality is a weakness

Lloyd and Omega ask why he helps saving Ninjago -> so that only he could conquer it

Lloyd explains that they just lost Cole -> Garmadon doesn’t think it’s worth delaying their mission

it’s also hard for Lloyd, because he knew what he was like before Oni trilogy. the fact that Lloyd will never have his dad again despite him being right next to him in flesh, hurts on another level.

and let’s bring in the fact that Lloyd is scared to death of what he can become if he lets himself be like his dad. Lloyd saw himself in Harumi, what he could be, if someone didn’t reach out to him. and Garmadon is someone he is afraid he could be, even when people are reaching out to him.

so all this mix gives us Lloyd, who is sceptical about his dad’s intentions. not because he is not willing to give him a chance, but because he’s afraid what will happen to him too if he does.

and Lloyd didn’t fully gave up on his dad. he still cared and listened to him, it’s just hard for him after so much hurting. he still gave him that chance.

as for Harumi, just because he tried to reason with her, doesn’t mean he forgives her or that he will treat her like nothing ever happened between them.

they are both completely different characters with different relationships and history with Lloyd. writing in crystalized lacked in some parts, but it wasn’t all nonsensical.

let’s rewind real quick

Harumi fights Lloyd all the time - she throws knife at him, nearly drowns him in the oni temple (all in 8x07 even though she needed him alive for the ritual and the revenge) and hunts him down in s9, but why? because she knows he’ll be okay. she believes he is strong enough to survive whatever bullshit she pulls at him. but when garmadon is the threat? she was hiding the fact that she knew resistance’s hideout until garmadon almost killed her, she tried to reason with crystal king to let her talk to him. she tried to reason with Lloyd so he wouldn’t risk his life.

she was protecting him.

Harumi would fight him, but Harumi never does anything that might actually put his life in danger. but when someone else threatens Lloyd, she protects him.

because a) she cares about him, yes; and b) because she also always wanted to protect people. don’t forget that it was her main motivation all along. and when she thought he died?

the way that llorumi comes to know each others true selves isn’t by any real like bonding it’s more like this read between the lines telepathic information projection nd like they both have roles to play okay they both have identities that have to be played on and obviously they’re not gonna break first and admit the others right so it’s rlly easy to view their scenes and be like oh green ninja and the quiet one they hate each other but like there’s so much masking and faking it and lying going on youve gotta comprehend that this isn’t rumi and lloyd ykwim

one of my favorite scenes that reflects this is in prime empire when avatar harumi and lloyd fight, and lloyd asks her what they first did together because the time they hung out was feed the poor and one of the follow through character traits of harumi (despite how much she ends up circling back failing at it she’s just a girl leave her alone) is that she cares abt the ppl of ninjago like she thinks the ninja, like the king and queen, are praised despite doing nothing for the people nd in hunted when she dies, she dies protecting ninjagos ppl. so when lloyd says “the REAL harumi would remember that” he means that shit so literally, bc the idea of the charming manipulative jade princess/quiet one is FAKE. and he knows what rlly matters to her, and what her true self actually is.

imagine the disappointment when everything she has ever wanted to see in garmadon, everything she thought he was, actually is in lloyd. it is him. the one person she hates the most turned out to be the hero of her dreams.
