"You're a monster."
"I wonder why you chose Dauntless when that Candor honesty is so easy for you. You have no filter. You’re Candor through- and-through. Easy to categorise; easy to control. I know you may believe I’m a monster -- your friends probably convinced you -- but I, unlike your Divergent friends, am simply working for the benefit of the city. Let’s see if there’s a streak of Erudite in you, shall we? Use your logic; reconsider who the monster is — the one protecting the people, or those who wish to destroy everything we rely on for survival?"

What has you so convinced that a world with divergents is so bad?
Ask my muse prying questions.
"They threaten the system. It’s a simple fact. In order for our system to remain strong, we have to remove any threats from the equation. Divergents don’t follow the ways of one faction; they’re too ruled by human nature to truly belong in any one category. Our system relies on categorisation and conformity. Divergents don’t conform. A world with Divergents is a world without the very system that is allowing our society to thrive. We’d be thrown into chaos."

In the last circle are five metal bowls so large they could hold my entire body, if I curled up. Each one contains a substance that represents each faction: gray stones for Abnegation, water for Erudite, earth for Amity, lit coals for Dauntless, and glass for Candor.

eruditedisguised:
second thoughts. and third. and fourth. he clears his throat, trembling hands fidgeting with the cuff of his sleeve. his loyalty now lies with erudite. ❛i mean—FACTION before blood.❜ —right? it’s what they’ve always been taught. it’s what he want to believe—so why has it always been so hard?
"Faction before blood."
She repeats the words as something like a confirmation, though she too knows they can be difficult to follow. But she chose faction. She chose her duty. There's no reality in which that decision would ever change. Not once has her loyalty to Erudite wavered; not once did she consider another faction.
"I'm glad you're loyal. We have work to do in the coming months. Things to prepare for. I need to know the whole faction is ready. We can't delay.
--- I spoke to your sister during her little day-trip here. You should advise her to follow your logic. Faction before blood. Dauntless is her home now. She made her choice, as you made yours. I hope you're smart enough to stand more confidently by your decision."

HEADCANON;;
Jeanine once had a lover -- a Divergent man she'd grown up with in Erudite who'd been a lifelong companion. She'd been the only person he'd confided his secret in, and it was one she vowed to take to her grave. Their romance had begun when they were teenagers and had only grown deeper into adulthood, even leading to a planned marriage in the year Jeanine would become Erudite leader. With that leadership came knowledge of the truth of their city and the system it so relied upon, and a task from her predecessor to eradicate all Divergents from Chicago. She'd fully intended to keep her love's Divergence a secret and allow him to remain hidden among them -- the only one worth risking her new position of power for -- but he soon fled upon hearing the details of her mission, leaving behind a broken-hearted woman who would in later years guard herself with cold logic and ruthlessness to eradicate human nature without mercy. After all, it was a part of the man's human nature to flee from the potential danger. Human nature is the enemy.
#idk if this even says everything i want it to say#but i'd kill for an au where eric is her son i can't even explain how much i want it#it makes sense#!!!!#[ headcanon. ]#i just love the whole 'hell hath no fury' thing#abandoned by the one person she'd spare#hence ruthless jeanine is born

Quote
"Intelligence must be used for the benefit, and not to the detriment, of society. Those who use intelligence for their own personal gain or to the detriment of others have not properly borne the responsibility of their GIFT, and are not welcome in our faction. It bears repeating: Intelligence is a GIFT, not a right. It must be wielded not as a weapon but as a tool for the betterment of others.”
From the Erudite Manifesto.

Beetee doesn’t know what he expected when he glanced into the makeshift holding cell, a white room with a two-way mirror forming the majority of one wall, but it’s certainly not what he sees —— the woman looks nothing like what she is. Even in the plain uniform of District 13, she exudes regality, poise ; there’s intelligence in her eyes, yet despite the likelihood that she’s fully aware of the implications of her capture, she seems perfectly at ease. It’s possibly a facade, but Beetee can’t glean anything else from her expression, and he’s certain that it’s not simply his own ineptitude at such things as he regards the personnel who sit in front of the mirror ; they whisper among themselves, shooting Jeanine Matthews looks of varying perplexity. Shouldn’t she be afraid? Shouldn’t there some trace of anger, or perhaps denial? She’s a MONSTER, that much is certain, and evidently quite comfortable being outed as such. It sends a chill up Beetee’s spine.
From his right, someone gives him a nod, and, steeling himself, Beetee enters the room. Jeanine sits in a chair at a simple interrogation table ; there’s a gap in lieu of a second chair in front of her, and he comes to a stop just before it, near enough that he can rest his elbows on the table if he so chooses. He studies the woman’s hands, at first, because he finds himself unable, or perhaps unwilling, to meet her eyes. Several moments pass in silence, in which Beetee straightens a small stack of notes and files ; then, he can stall no more, and he lifts his gaze.
“May I call you Jeanine, or do you prefer ‘Miss Matthews’?”
She might as well be the personification of serenity as she sits, hands lightly clasped, a hint of a smile on her features, enveloped in the silence and sterility of the white room. It is, after all, an environment she's quite comfortable in -- despite the lack of beeping she's used to from the machines that would be strapped to her own test subjects, of course. She's spent her time here simply observing the goings on in District 13; from the rough treatment of the guards to the curious observers behind a glass wall, there are some things that are oddly reminiscent of the Capitol prisons. There's a part of her, buried deep down under cold logic, that finds the striking similarities amusing -- the Capitol cells were considerably cleaner than those here in 13, it's true, but for all their self-righteousness, there's little difference between the rebels and the Capitol in the way they would treat a human being. She's under no illusions that she has a moral high-ground to take -- she is President Snow's psychological torture expert, after all -- but what's amusing enough to leave her smiling is that she, unlike those in charge of the petty rebellion, is not blind to her own monstrous nature. She gave up her humanity for her work. It's a fact she's well aware of, and has found ways to be proud of over the years. Jeanine can't help but wonder, however, if the rebels would own up to their own hypocrisy. It's amusing to her that these fearless rebels, so eager to free mankind, would treat prisoners no better than the monsters they wish to defeat.
As the door opens, her eyes lift and immediately she's observing in a way that would make inexperienced interrogators uncomfortable. Her gaze fixes on the man as he wheels his way across the room, following his every move and absorbing every detail as her mind works to study her newest visitor. She sits straight in her chair, the picture of grace and ease as if she's not at the mercy of her enemies. There has yet to be an interrogator smart enough to earn her respect or calm enough to snatch the control from her hands -- this is her room; her interrogation. The only saving grace for the man whose identity she's well aware of is that she knows of his work, and there's little she respects more than erudition.
"Jeanine is fine. May I offer you some advice to pass on to your leaders? Poor living conditions have a negative affect on the human mind. If your people seek to gain any information from any prisoners, they may want to at least show their guests the courtesy of a clean cell. I've withheld that information up until now, but I know you're a man of intelligence. You'll know the truth of my words. For the best chance of information retrieval, prisoners must be treated as well as your work allows. I can assure you, Mr Latier, you will retrieve no information from me."
oferudiite liked this for a starter.

"You parted from your family almost without a second thought. Most can't do that so easily. Human beings are creatures of habit, after all. Loyalties can be difficult to toss aside. I find myself wondering if your loyalties to Erudite are more secure."
❛…fascinating, ms. matthews?❜ he thinks that to have two possible connotations, and he’s not too sure on whether or not either are GOOD.

||Still on anon. Yeeep. Fun fact: I've yet to read the trilogy. Or see the movie. I want to, I've wanted to for /years/, I just haven't yet. I really hope to this year. We'll see! Bearing in mind that I know nothing of Jeanine beyond things you've talked about, I think, as usual, you're doing a brilliant job. I look forward to being able to actually compare your muse to the woman I read about, but honestly...I get the feeling I won't find anything to complain or pick at.||
anonymously tell me what you think of my character portrayal
ngl i still haven't finished book 3 cause i just don't like it so technically i haven't quite read the trilogy either. :') the movie's pretty good though. you should come talk to me when you've seen it and let me know if you enjoy it. also you're far too nice to me, i hope you realise that. thank you though. it's one thing to make someone enjoy a character they know of, but if i've made you like one you don't know anything about, that's cool. :D
