Remus was fourteen the first time they all snuck a bottle back from Hogsmeade under their cloaks, laughing the whole way, faces red from exertion and the cold. 

He’d had butterbeer before, but when they sat around the dorm room in a small circle, passing a flask of something much stronger back and forth between them, all of them pretending not to grimace and gag at the taste, he realized that this was different.

It took a bit for it to take effect. For his head to become woozy and his legs to begin to feel strangely light. For that little voice in his head to melt away.

The four of them sat up for hours, laughing at nothing, coming up with elaborate plans for pranks and glory and a peaceful future, conversations melding together into one ball of happiness.

But he found himself coming back into his own head when he turned to see both James and Peter asleep on the floor.

“Lightweights,” Sirius whispered, causing both of them to fall into a fit of giggles that lasted so long Remus had to hold his stomach from laughing. After Sirius finally stopped chuckling, he gazed blearily over to the window. “Oh, look Moony!”

Both of them stumbled together to stare outside and Sirius eagerly pointed upward. “That’s me, look, there!”

Remus, of course, couldn’t see. But he pretended to look anyway, squinting hard and then turning to his friend. And when he turned to Sirius, his breath escaped from his body.

Sirius had never looked so…pretty. Eyes sparkling with the light of the moon, face rouged from the drink, hair down and flowing around his shoulders, he looked almost ethereal. At Remus’s intake of breath, Sirius turned. “What?” he asked, blinking rapidly.

“Oh. You’re just…you’re pretty,” Remus mumbled, too drunk to regret his words.

At that, Sirius lit up, a huge smile spreading across his face. “Thanks, Moons,” he grinned, his voice soft. “You are, too.”

And Remus fell asleep with a smile on his face.

When the two boys awoke the next morning, one had forgotten the whole exchange. The other just pretended to forget.

I remember shipping Marlene and Mary so hard the first time I read ATYD and never understanding why they weren't a more popular ship??? They're best friends, and Mary was Marlene's gay awakening. They grew apart because Marlene wanted to fight in the war while Mary just wanted to live a normal life. Lily was their biggest shipper, and she got to see them fall in love over the years, but they were both too scared to act on their feelings. They didn’t have enough time—Marlene was the first one to die out of all of them, and a part of Mary died with her that same day.
