Campus police at a California college pepper-sprayed as many as 30 demonstrators on Tuesday as they tried to cram into a trustee meeting to protest a proposed price hike for some of the school's most popular summer courses.

Whatever his complaint, George Zimmerman seemed quick to call the police. Over the course of nearly eight years, Zimmerman made at least 46 911 and non-emergency calls (PDF) to the police department in Sanford, Florida, culminating in the two fateful calls he made Feb. 26, shortly before he confronted and then fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

The senators wrote that it was appropriate to keep specific operations secret. But, they said, the government in a democracy must act within publicly understood law so that voters “can ratify or reject decisions made on their behalf” — even if that “obligation to be transparent with the public” creates other challenges.
Exactly.

It’s been widely reported today that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the shadowy corporate front group that unites state lawmakers with corporations to pass state laws favorable to corporate interests, helped pass the law that might allow Trayvon Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, to escape prosecution. Florida’s “Stand Your Ground,” the law that might help Zimmerman to claim self-defense (despite evidence to the contrary) is just one of many state laws that is nearly identical to ALEC’s model Castle Doctrine Act. The Florida senator who introduced the law, Durell Peadon, was also a member of ALEC. The law passed in 2005.

(Washington, DC) – The US Justice Department should immediately investigate the New York City police for alleged religion-based discrimination in their surveillance of Muslim communities, and make its findings public, Human Rights Watch said today in a letter to US Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder recently said that the matter was “under review” at the Justice Department, but there has been no commitment to a formal investigation.

The New York Police Department has repeatedly used violence against peaceful protesters in the Occupy Wall Street movement. On March 17th, several protesters were hospitalized by police violence. The Department seems to be actively attempting to suppress the nonviolent movement through infiltration, monitoring and violent arrest. We call for a full, independent investigation by the state Attorney General into the active suppression of the movement by the New York Police Department, including, but not limited to: 1. The use of taxpayer funds to infiltrate and monitor peaceful Occupy protest planning 2. Departmental practices that lead to, or allow for, the violent dispersal of crowds and the violent arrest of protestors 3. Civil rights violations of protestors by the police

A girl has a seizure in handcuffs, medic gets head thrown into a window, a Guardian journalist told by an NYPD officer that he "doesn't give a fuck" about the journalist's press pass. Baton-wielding NYPD thugs still acting as though they are the lawmakers, telling people to stand on sidewalks, then telling them they can't stand on sidewalks, forcefully walking people blocks away, asking others if they're a terrorist for counting the number of officers in a line...
