ok i want to actually legitimately talk about my interpretation of aaron in mcd more in depth because i have Thoughts, so enjoy this disjointed collection of 1 AM ramblings

like i’ve said before, i like to think of aaron less as being Dark and Edgy or whatever and more as awkward and stiff. when he’s first introduced, he’s literally just some guy wandering through the woods, presumably tracking zane. during that time, he was probably solely focused on enacting his revenge—and then, all of a sudden, he meets aphmau, he ends up getting brought into the fold of her village, and he suddenly has things to care about again. his behavior, how he deals with that, and how he evolves as a character is very interesting to me.

he was clearly very withdrawn for a good chunk of the series. i think part of this was because, after being alone for so long, just wandering ru’aun and focused solely on revenge, he lacked a lot of social skills and kind of forgot how to, like.. talk to people LMAO. dude was walking around the woods, half-clothed, fighting werewolves for some reason, probably sweaty and dirty as hell. he was basically a feral dog. (i say this affectionately)

he also reminds me very much of a feral/stray dog in the sense that he’s wary to trust, but keeps coming back to aph anyway, particularly in the earlier episodes where he’s featured; he sort of just shows up out of the woods, only ever seeks out aphmau when she’s alone, then disappears again, but never strays too far.

i also think part of the reason for that aaron being withdrawn was because he was trying to resist making connections with aphmau and her people. after the loss of his family and village, he didn’t want to open himself up to any more loss and pain. truthfully, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was suffering from PTSD, and social isolation as a way to avoid re-traumatizing yourself can be a part of that.

also, on another one of my posts, someone mentioned him being in his 30s or 40s and all the other characters being in their 20s, which i think would also explain him being a lot more stoic and unsociable.

i’m not the first person to say this, but aaron could honestly be a great narrative foil for aphmau; he’s lost everything to zane, and, as a result, he becomes vengeful and instinctively distrustful of people, closes himself off, no longer forms bonds. aphmau lost so much to zane too, but she reacts differently to experiencing that loss; she tries to move forward, to continue building community, to continue being kind and caring, to keep the loved ones she still had even closer than before. aaron and aphmau still impart lessons on each other things though, and, at their core, they are very similar; they were both lords at some point with an unwavering devotion to their people.

that all being said, as the series continues, aaron does change, his final act being one born out of love and devotion, not out of a desire for revenge, as he explains in his letter to aph. it’s a stark contrast to how he acted at first, and yet, somehow, also very similar. i think, in a way, he was always motivated by a need to protect, but when he failed at that when it came to his wife, son, and village, it turned into a need for revenge. to me, aaron being able to die by protecting his new family was something that ultimately fulfilled him in the end.

i have a very love/hate relationship with aaron; i’m not a huge fan of him now and i recognize that there’s a lot of issues with the execution of his character, but he was very near and dear to little me. i think a lot of criticisms of how he was brought into the story and resulted in a lot of male characters being sidelined are valid, but i also think that he was genuinely a good match for aphmau because they understood each other.

Consider the alternative of Vylad (and all other Shadow Knights by extension) not aging since his death.

So depending on your headcanon it varies, but I hc Vylad as 14 when he died, and Garroth 6 years older than him, but five years between Vylad's death and the events of MCD S1.

So when it should be 20 years, and then Garroth sees his baby brother not a day older than the day he died, still bearing the scars of his death... A child, so much younger than he had perceived him to be when he had been younger. He already knew Vylad had been too young, but now he was younger than Levin, Levin who shouldn't be as old as he was but because of the Irene Dimension, he was in fact that old. Garroth sees Levin, and still sees the kid he helped raise, and then he sees Vylad, and sees him younger than Levin, yet older than them all, the age is in his eyes but it is nowhere else on his body.

Just... Shadow Knights not aging, and the implications of this.

The whole Gene chaos in S3 being a 20-something year old Gene. Maybe part of the chaos becomes somebody assuming Gene is Dante's child from a teenage love since now Dante is almost twice Gene's physical age.

Laurance slowly realizing that he hasn't aged and has been watching everyone else age. Thinking that because he never killed his Lord and became a full blown Shadow Knight he would be fine, that the old lady Shadow Knight in Pikoro was proof of that, but then he learns he's not.

Sasha and Laurance getting hit by the realization they will never grow old with Cadenza, even if Sasha has been lost to Gene's magics, they both recognize this devastation hard. Laurance could come to terms with an additional 15 year difference, but an eternally widening gap?

Part of Laurance leaving not being jealousy, but the realization that he will outlive all those he loves, so his best option is going to the Nether and doing what he can for those who will live just as he does.

Vylad and Zenix both wearing masks to hide their ages best they can, Garroth never noticing Zenix not aging because Zenix was so careful to hide himself. Vylad able to trick most people with his scarf and hood and armor-padded clothing, but catch him in casual clothes and despite his supposedly noble upbringing the signs of malnourishment is there and will never fade from his Shadow Knight body.

Zenix watching Brian grow up and it helps break him as he understands he will never have the same while he's trying to cling to sanity.

Zane and Vylad realizing they have each other now, maybe Zane getting a redemption centuries later because of it. Garroth getting old but neither Zane nor Vylad reaching 30.

Alexis, not quite a Shadow Knight, but she was one briefly. Alexis who ages with her age mates until she reaches the age that she'd been forced into when she had been a Shadow Knight, and then it slows. Being 20 when her friends are 20, but 30 when they're 40. Alexis never realizing this until late, everyone thinking she just got good genes, but then her friends are old and frail and she's still in her prime. And it's not until she looks to be the same age as her own children that they realize she will outlive them all, all because she had been a Shadow Knight for less than an hour.

made myself sad thinking about garroth reuniting with vylad after escaping the irene dimension and discovering that vylad has aged 15 years…. his baby brother is now suddenly older than him…. AUGHHH

headcanon that all of Aphmau’s children have different sir names, and it confuses literally everyone

Explanation:

Malachi does not remember his last name, nor does he want to, so he takes Aphmau’s; Shala’shaska.

Levin is Garroth’s son, and once Aphmau and Garroth find that out, they give him Garroth’s last name. Only issue… It’s not actually his last name. Instead of Levin Ro’meave, his name is Levin Meadows, as that was the name Garroth was using at the time.

Garnet, yes I removed Lilith from her name (sorry) is named Garnet Lycan, after her late adoptive father. Technically Aphmau is more like an aunt to Garnet, but she’s always just called her mom.

Alina is Laurance’s daughter, and Aphmau wanted to honor him whilst he was in the Nether (even though she was livid with him for leaving) so she named her Alina Zvahl.

So, ah yes, the Lady Aphmau and her children: Malachi Shala’shaksa, Levin Meadows, Netty Lycan, and Lina Zvahl.

Oh trust that there are plenty of rumors surrounding her and her children.

So ep 22 is when levin shows up. vylad dropped him off at her doorstep. but it was so long before hand that the old lord died.

HOW LONG DID HE TAKE CARE OF THAT BABY!? How may nights was vylad holding a crying baby, hushing him as he looked around worried gene would show again? where did he keep levin while he was doing all the things we saw him do?

What Would You Be?

Summary: A silly conversation before bed.

This is my warmup as I get back into writing.

The sun descends as the group sits in the forest, resting for the night before continuing their journey back to Phoenix Drop in the morning. They circle a decently sized campfire, chicken roasting above the dancing flames. They talk amicably as they wind down for the night.

“Well, I’d definitely be a model.” Declares Laurance as he spreads out on the grass in a promiscuous pose.

Dante sighs, throwing the remnants of his chicken wing at Laurance who squawks in protest. “You’re so full of shit. Who’d even want to draw you?”

“Some gorgeous O’khasis girls, obviously.” Laurance sighs dreamily, leaning against Aphmau who turns to Garroth.

“What about you, Garroth?”

“Hmm?” His head shoots up from his food, evidently absent from the conversation.

“What would you be?” Aphmau tilts her head in question.

“What would I be?” Garroth scrunches his face in confusion.

“Yeah, you know, if you weren’t a guard. What would you want to do instead if you could pick anything?”

“Oh, I.. I don’t know. I never thought of being anything really….. I suppose maybe a…. musician. Or in theater. Or something. Something fun.” Garroth shrugs, a small smile playing at his lips.

Katelyn buts into the conversation, “I should’ve figured you were a fan of the arts, Garroth, but I didn’t realize you’d want to participate in them.” She takes a large chunk out of her piece of chicken.

“Oh! Maybe you can borrow Dale’s guitar and play us something when we get back home?” Aphmau offers.

“Oh, I don’t–”

“No, no, no.”Laurance gets up from the grass, striking another dramatic pose, “Coming soon, Phoenix Drop Productions featuring Garroth Ro’Meave! A tale of war, friendship, and romance.” Laurance wiggles his brows suggestively.

“Knock it off!” Aphmau smacks Laurance’s leg, pulling back down into the grass. 

Dante grabs another piece of chicken from the campfire. “I think you’d be great at both of those things.”

“Why do you say that?” Garroth asks, turning to Dante, who shrugs and makes a small grimace.

“No offence, Gar, but you can be a bit dramatic at times. Would make a crazy stage presence, though. And you have a lovely voice too.” Dante laughs and everyone joins in, including Garroth.

Katelyn finishes her food and chucks the bone into the pit of the fire. “I thought about becoming a singer. Used to sing to my brother every night before bed.”

“Why didn’t you?” Aphmau asks.

Katelyn shrugs, “O’khasis propaganda, more or less–” Garroth barks out a laugh. “I thought it was a good idea. I was told I’d be able to protect my brother, my dad, Jeffory… and then Jeffory decided to become a guard as well, a Jury of Nine member at that. I didn’t want him doing it alone, so I made the list myself.”

Laurances reaches over and rests his hand on her knee, gently squeezing, “Well, I’m sure your family was proud of you. And now you’ve become an incredible asset for our team.”

“No matter how we got here, we’re a team, and we love having each other here. Everyone.” Aphmau states with certainty. She glances around the circle, lingering on Dante, who smiles sincerely.

Everyone sits in silence following Aphmau’s words. They all bask in the warmth of the moment and the campfire, the beautiful night with glimmering stars above, and the assurance of camaraderie. The silence is only broken by Dante,

“...When I was younger, I wanted to be a bird.” Everyone else bursts into laughter, Dante slowly following along. He scolds through his laughs, “I’m serious! Don’t laugh at me!”

Garroth suppresses his laughter to the best of his ability, “Why of all things did you want to be a bird?”

“Well I could say some super profound shit about wanting to fly away and be freed from my oh so terrible childhood but in all honesty… I was going through a phase. I just really liked birds. And I guess flying would be a cool bonus.” Dante laughs, covering his face with his hands. 

“You are such a nerd, dude.” Laurance huffs out one more laugh before falling back in the grass, throwing an arm over his eyes.

“Totally.”

“Definitely.”

Dante scoffs, “Yeah, yeah. Pick on Dante, everyone.” He shakes his head, lying down as well. Aphmau, Katelyn, and Garroth follow suit. 

“Goodnight, guys.” Aphmau softly utters, staring up at the night sky. Far up in the sky, a comet beams across the endless void of stars and space, shining over the dense forest in a hopeful gleam.
