You know, I've seen a lot of criticisms about some the issues in the Harry Potter books, some character wise, some on subtext. One issue I haven't seen people point out? Hermione gets very little focus as a character.
Like, Ron might not be seen by some people as that great a character, bit he gets a lot of focus. We understand his insecurities, his fears, what his home life is and how that shaped him into who he is. We meet his family, both extended and the one he lives at home with. We even see his house multiple times over the course of the series. We learn things about him that expand on him as a character beyond just being Harry's slightly dickish best friend. But we don't get that with Hermione.
Hermione is just "The smart girl" and that's it. That's all we get from her character wise. She's smart, followw the rules to a T, gets perfect grades, doesn't like sports, thinks her male friends can be dumb, fears failing in class, all the stereotypical "smart girl" stuff. But we don't learn anything else about her. We aren't exposed to any new sides to Hermione or learn anything about her that would go past her just being Harry's smart girl friend. She gets a BIT of development by becoming more willing to break rules or do less than moral things but we still don't really see anything groundbreaking or that deep about HER. Like, what HER home situation and life like to make her such a smarty pants? Does she have hobbies or interests besides just reading about stuff? What's her relationship with her family like? We don't really learn any of that about her. They kind of try to give her something else her thing about House-Elf rights but that's something that only started in that one book because she happened to have met a house elf. And it still doesn't tell us much about Hermione herself.
Like, take books 4 and 7. In both of them, Harry spends large amount of time just with Hermione because he and Ron had a falling out. Now, you'd think those would be perfect times to learn more about Hermione.....but we don't. In both periods, it just focuses on Harry and what he's thinking about and going through. Granted, the books are from Harry's point of view and during both periods, he's dealing with a lot of emotional turmoil, so he probably isn't in the mood to talk to Hermione about that, but my point still stands.
We learn so much about Ron and see his family, insecurities, and all sorts of things that expand on his character. But Hermione really gets gipped because her character is just being the smart girl who reads something or does some magic to advance the plot.
