11: „Let me take care of it, alright? You need to rest.“

You haven’t shown up at the lair for a few days after catching a massive cold. Those late nights out apparently were a stronger toll on your immune system than you thought.

For a moment you thought that it was unfair that the boys were able to do this every night while you were laying in bed just after a few times. It didn’t matter that your ninja friends weren’t exactly normal and if you wanted to know how their immune system worked you’d only have to ask the purple-clad turtle and he’d give you a full-depth explanation.

While your mind was occupied with your thoughts and the dull ache of being sick clouding your mind you didn’t notice the knock on your window and only really gave it any attention when you saw a figure climb through it. A few blinks later you were able to recognize who it was that decided to visit you late at night at your sickbed, his presence bringing a smile to your lips.

„Oh, hey Leo!“

„Hey [y/n]“, he replied with his usual shy smile as he made his way over to you, „I’ve read your messages and wanted to see how you’re doing.“

As you wanted to say that you were fine, your body decided to act on its own and answered with a coughing fit. Leo immediately rushed over rubbing your back to try and help with the burn.

„Are you okay? Do you need something?“ The concern in his voice was very much evident, accompanied with a worried look on his face. As his blue eyes practically burned into your own, you tried to reassure him, „Thank you for worrying about me but I’m fine. This is only a cold, I’ve survived worse.“

„But still, I feel bad knowing that you’re sick because you were out so long with us. I should have been more responsible and sent you home earlier.“

„Leo, don’t beat yourself up over it. You know this isn’t your fault. It was my decision to stay with you guys after all.“

The tired smile you gave him seemed to reassure him a little bit and his shoulders loosened up. He didn’t even notice them tensing. You two looked at each other, enjoying the other’s presence.

A few moments passed before the silence was interrupted by his phone buzzing. His content expression faltered as he read through the text. A sigh left him as he turned his gaze towards you again with an apologetic expression, „I’m really sorry that this visit has to be cut short but I just got a text from Donnie. Apparently the lair is gonna go up in flames if I don’t come back soon.“

A giggle escaped you, being able to imagine exactly what was happening at their home. You put your hand atop of his and gave him a reassuring smile.

„Don’t worry about it Leo. It’s getting quite late anyways, I should go to sleep and try to get better so I can join your guys‘ shenanigans again soon.“

„Yeah, your presence is heavily missed. But I should go now, if I let them alone for any time longer I’m going to have to put out a real fire.“

You chuckled as you stood up from the bed, leaving the blue-clad turtle confused.

„Aren’t you going to go to bed? I thought you needed to rest?“

„Oh, yeah. But I haven’t eaten lunch yet and I should probably try to at least eat some fruits or something. Going to bed on an empty stomach doesn’t sound too healthy.“

You didn’t even notice the turtle move until Leo was standing right in front of you, hands on you shoulders and stern look on his face, „You haven’t eaten yet? [y/n], it’s almost midnight!“

Putting your hands on top of his, you tried to reassure him, „Don’t worry about it Leo. I’ve got it, you just go back to your brothers.“

„No, you’re sick.. You’re going to lay down again and get comfortable. I’ll make you something to eat and some tea.“

A little bit taken aback you stared at him for a second. Normally he only used this tone with his brothers when they were out on a mission but it didn’t last long.

„Leo, I’m really fine. I can take care of myself.“

The expression on his face softened as did the grip he had on your shoulders, „I know you can. Just, let me take care of it, alright? You need to rest.“

As you mirrored his smile, realizing that he still felt responsible for your cold you said in a hushed tone, „Alright, but don’t worry about it. This isn’t your fault.“

You sat down on the bed and he helped to tuck you in again before making his way to the kitchen. It didn’t take long for him to come back, a bowl of hot soup and a steaming cup of tea in hand.

He handed it to you and sat down with you, keeping you company until you were finished eating and fell asleep.

On the way out he made sure your heater was turned up and the window closed as he left to see the mess he’d have to clean up with his brothers. But then again, it wasn’t as if he wasn’t used to that. Plus, spending time with you was always worth the cost, at least to him.

Small Rant About My Favorite Turtle

Something that really bothers me is when people call Raph abusive. Sure, he can sometimes go to far and it seems abusive to anyone who's never had siblings or never been in an abusive relationship of any kind before. But he's not abusive, just very temperamental.

In fact, even when he's really angry, he doesn't take it as far as people make it out to be. Such as, beating the shit out of his brothers over something small and enjoying it. And I don't mean like when Mikey purposely aggravates him and he reacts with retaliation. I mean these people will legit tell others who haven't even seen the show that he will beat Mikey up at random moments for no reason at all.

Then we have the verbal abuse issue.

Does Raph say kinda really mean things?

Yes.

Yes, he does.

Are they mostly when he's upset and/or angry at someone or something?

Yes.

Yes it is.

Raph is giving us a pretty normal reaction when we feel that way. While his words are hurtful, and he DOES get repercussion for it, he acts just like everyone else as we all tend to say things we don't mean when we're upset.

Raph may be crude, but most of what he does is tease. That's a normal thing that siblings do to each other!

And when he does go to far, he gets very upset and feels guilty and horrible about it, IMMEDIATELY apologizing afterwards.

If anything, Raph is the most affectionate character in TMNT.

All the times he boosted his brothers egos in front of others to make them feel better, the amount of hugging and reassuring he's given?

It's shown more then Splinter has done and that's their father.

Even in the course of 5 seasons, Raph's angry had decreased while he opened up more about himself and his feelings.

Jist of it all is, Raph may be a little rough around the edges but he would NEVER hurt his family like they way an abuser would.

So based on this I'd vibe the most with Leo and Mikey, also Raph but I'm not really hot-headed (I'm more of a bottle-it-up-until-I-explode-Person).

who the turtles vibe with

Your relationships with others can really describe you sometimes, so I took a step back and looked at all the versions of the turtles that I know of, to see who they tend to make friends with.

Raphael’s gravitate towards sensitive goofballs and hotheads.

Take 2003 Raphael; he’s best friends with Casey Jones, who is lighthearted, hotheaded, and heartfelt. Casey is a gentle, caring person, who takes to nurturing the turtles - like when he tucked Donnie in when he was sick. Raph’s seem to have an innate sympathy for those who suffer with anger issues, and that’s because they understand having that issue intimately; for example, in the episode that him and Casey meet, Raph sees himself within Casey and tries to offer him some advice.

2003 Raphael also hangs out with Mikey all the time, who’s an insightful person, as well as a goofball. Although we hardly see that Michelangelo get serious, he’s pretty in tune with other people’s emotions, and he’s understanding because of that (..for the most part. He has his insensitive moments, like when he kept triggering Leatherhead). No matter how annoyed he gets by Mikey, I think it says something that Raph still spends a lot of time with his younger bro, not to mention he’s rather protective of him.

We also see Bayverse Raphael hang out with Mikey a lot. This Mikey is openly vulnerable and emotional (and again, a goofball), and he feels comfortable in confiding in his older brother. Mikey’s tender-hearted, and Raph’s the same. He’s also protective of Mikey.

So what does this say about Raph’s character in general?

Raphael likes having deeper, more emotional connections with people; he likes feeling understood and cared for, and he likes looking after others and making sure they’re making good decisions. And when he needs a break from feeling, he can simply step back and have a laugh, go goof off.

Donatello’s gravitate towards compassionate, snarky, and clever people.

Take 1990 Donatello; at the farmhouse, he made friends with Casey. They took to bonding over mechanics by fixing up an old truck together, which takes no small amount of smarts to do (seriously, people who work on cars are smart). He and Casey really enjoyed trading insults just for fun. Not to mention, that Casey can have a bit of an attitude at times - think of all the times he got on April’s nerves, as well as Raph’s. He even flustered/offended Donnie when they were trading insults by calling out his ‘dome head’. Casey also has a distinctive moral compass (which can sometimes be a little black-and-white, but he just feels strongly about justice); he has a kind heart and means well.

Rise Donatello has a similar friendship to that, but with April. April indulges in his shenanigans while simultaneously sassing him out of exasperation for said shenanigans. They bicker constantly, which is just a dynamic they seem to enjoy. She also thinks quickly and sensibly in tough situations, and she enjoys helping her friends.

And 2003 Donatello seems to be close to April, who is a computer programmer and intellectually vibes with Don. She also has her snarky, passive-aggressive moments, particularly when she’s annoyed by the turtles or by Casey. April is very understanding and nurturing, and she’s always willing to help her friends out. She, along with Rise April and 1990 Casey, doesn’t take nonsense from anybody; they’re all quite assertive and don’t need somebody else to stand up for them… ‘cause they already do that for themselves. 

So what does this say about Donnie’s character in general?

Donatello likes people who aren’t afraid to verbally and intellectually go toe-to-toe with him - people who provide a fun, stimulating conversation, who can be comfortable enough around him to point out his flaws and be real with him, and who will take the time to understand him.

Leonardo’s gravitate towards understanding, supportive, and fiercely loyal people.

Take 2003 Leonardo; he’s close friends with Miyamoto Usagi, who sees himself within Leo. They’ve both suffered with the weight of failure, and Usagi does his best to support Leo with this, offering him advice and allowing Leo to vent to him by providing a listening ear. When the Ultimate Draco transports Leo to Second Earth, both Leo and Usagi have each other’s backs and look out for one another, loyal to the end.

2012 Leonardo and April have a very similar friendship. Leo trusts April enough to go to her for advice on girl trouble (with Karai). They came to an understanding of each other at the farmhouse, when they were both experiencing disabilities, and they supported and comforted one another through that tough time. April is often looking out for the turtles, and despite her irritability towards them at times, she’s very loyal to them.

So what does this say about Leo’s character in general?

As the leader, Leonardo doesn’t come by the opportunity to get feelings off of his chest often, so he likes being listened to and appreciates when his concerns/issues aren’t brushed off. He enjoys being advised, comforted, and supported. Once someone has his trust, he sticks with them till the very end.

(It was hard to find more people who Leonardo’s seem to really vibe with, which I think says something about him: he doesn’t make close friends often. I think it comes from being more guarded than the rest of his brothers.)

Michelangelo’s gravitate towards emotional, fun-loving, and laidback people - and those who have been hurt.

Take 2012 Michelangelo; he seems to be closest to Leatherhead, who reacts violently to negative triggers but is normally calm and very sensitive. He doesn’t wish to lash out and hurt people; it just happens, and Mikey understands that. At first, Leatherhead finds it difficult to trust others, but he quickly allows Mikey in. He’s also very outwardly caring toward Mikey, be it by expressing his gratefulness for him, or by being protective of him.

2012 Mikey is also friends with Mondo Gecko, who definitely takes a more laidback approach to life. He’s very fun-loving and seems to be a person who prefers focusing on keeping his mind preoccupied than worrying about life.

We see Bayverse Michelangelo hang out with Raph a lot, who takes on a protective, caring older brother role towards him. Raph makes sure to stick up for Mikey and involve him, and he lends a listening ear to him as well. He usually wears his heart on his sleeve, much like Mikey. Not only do him and Mikey have deep conversations, they goof off plenty together.

There’s 2003 Michelangelo and Raph, too. They tend to joke around together; I feel like Mikey finds some relief in their dynamic, that no matter what messed-up stuff life throws at him, he can always rely on Raph to get riled up and indulge in his shenanigans. Raph is also protective of him and takes care to express his affection towards Mikey.

So what does this say about Mikey’s character in general?

A healer, Michelangelo likes being able to care after someone, while also knowing he’s receiving that same care in return. He values having a sensitive, affectionate connection with someone. He also enjoys the presence of people who can help him destress and escape for a while.

(And to specifically bring attention to the ‘those who have been hurt’ part, Mikey seems to know how to make anyone feel better. He’s empathetic like that. He’s also insightful and seems to notice other people’s pains easily.)

How the Turtles (2012) act around their crush

Leo

He‘d get very nervous around you. Neckscratches and stuttered words are a daily routine when you visit the lair.

Leo does get jealous quite easily and when you‘re around his brothers his insecurities skyrocket. But whenever he realizes this he reprimands himself and goes into either the door or his room to meditate.

He gets flustered easily when you touch him, may that be a brush of hands or a full on hug - he never hears the end of it from his brothers.

You would never get scolded - you‘re the one where his strict leader-persona falters. Plus, he just can‘t handle the sad expression on your face. (His brothers use this to their advantage when they‘ve messed up though.)

Leo will help you with everything he can, even if it‘s just making a cup of tea for you when you‘re studying for a test.

Whenever you‘re at the lair he‘ll either hover around you all the time or is doing his best to avoid you - there‘s no in-between. He never knows if he‘s too overbearing on you or if he isn‘t making the intention behind his actions clear enough.

This boy can fit so much overthinking in him.

Raph

Raph is always in awe whenever you do something new or improved on a skill.

He always offers his help whenever he can - of course he tries not to make it obvious but… he isn‘t as good at it as he thinks.

He won‘t ever get angry at you or explode in your face and scream at you - it‘s quite the opposite. You‘re one of the few people in his life that are actually able to calm him down. (His brothers do make use of that from time to time.)

Spontaneous nighttime visits announced by a knock on your window are an usual occurrence when this turtle is crushing. He‘ll either come with a movie to watch or just invites you to a stroll under the stars - or even a sparring session, depending on your interest.

His brain just stops functioning when you‘re nice to him - his cheeks match his mask in color and he‘ll have a light stutter before getting a grasp of himself again.

Raph tries to spend as much time with you as possible - cue him giving you special training units just to be close to you. Plus, he‘ll be so proud when you win!

During movie nights or also just during general lounging in the living room he‘ll always scoot closer to you - again, he tries to be smooth… emphasis on try. But he just can‘t help it! Around you he just gets so jittery.

He does get a little jealous when you do stuff with especially Leo and tends to get frustrated when it happens. Then he‘ll be found in the training room, blowing off some steam.

Donnie

Donnies crush on you is painfully obvious.

He‘ll constantly craft you trinkets and you‘re always the first to get updates for your phone.

As soon as you set foot into the lair he‘ll be at your side. The only exception for that is when he‘s working on something really important for their mission. But even then he‘ll take a break to greet you, if even just for a minute or until Leo shushes him back into his lab.

Donnie always lights up when he sees you come through the entrance. When he only hears your voice he‘ll become the definition of speed to come greet you.

When you show him even the simplest form of affection he‘ll become so nervous he won‘t be able to get a normal word out.

He‘s always there to help you with projects for school and will gladly explain any subject to you when you‘re struggling. For tests he‘s also your self-proclaimed studying partner!

If you give him a hug or any kind of physical contact he‘ll just short-circuit.

Whenever you‘re nice to him or thank him for a gift he‘ll give you his big smile.

He does get quite jealous when you spend time with his brothers but you won‘t really notice it as he does retreat back to his lair to distract himself.

Mikey

While it takes him some time to notice that it’s a crush and you’re not just a very very good friend, he‘ll become an even brighter ray of sunshine around you.

Mikey always tries to impress you - he‘s the master of “Hey [y/n]! Look at this!“ crash

Even when most of his stunts don‘t work he still counts them as a win when it makes you laugh or come to help him with any injuries.

He seems to have even more energy around you and often invites you to join him - may that be skateboarding or cooking. It‘s just more enjoyable to him when you‘re around.

Mikey is very intuitive when it comes to emotions and is always very good at comforting you - even when you didn‘t even know you needed it.

Hugs for days! He‘ll always try to teach you in some way and isn‘t ashamed to just plop into your lap or envelop you in a bone-crushing hug after a tight mission.

He‘s also not one to get jealous… much

Mikey knows you‘re good friends with his brothers and would never demand of you to only give attention to him. But when you haven‘t given him much attention and spent a lot of time with his brothers his happy persona tends to slip and he‘ll retreat into his room.
