44/365. Sports Photography can provide good shots on and off fields. Capturing crowds in action can sometimes distract you from the game. Nothing better than when a fan wants an impromptu portrait. This week’s theme was people. Moving on to something new tomorrow.

43/365. Awesome to be invited to this wedding (as a guest). I took a point and shoot to grab some unofficial wedding snaps. I was mindful to stay out of the way of the paid photographer. The bride was Fijian Indian (what a fantastic smile) and he was Colombian. So many vibrant colours. A great wedding but also a celebration of how multicultural New Zealand has become. This week’s theme is people.

42/365. I have a lot of respect for senior citizens. They’ve lived through epic times in our history. Many have fantastic stories to share. Great to see how they use different “devices” to keep mobile and maintain an eye on what’s going on in their communities.  My theme this week is people.

41/365. Today I checked out Pipers in the Park. Wellington’s own Highlander Games. Plenty going on with bagpipes, ceilidh (Island Bay style) and highland dancing. I caught these young ladies perform a number of charming routines. My theme this week is people.

39/365. It’s Census year in New Zealand. The Statistics New Zealand crew were out doing their thing at Te Rā O Te Raukura at Te Whiti Park. Their message was “rep your rohe and do the 2018 Census”.The Census is important, it’s how we find out what’s happening with our population. Census Day is Tuesday 6 March, details can be found on https://www.census.govt.nz/

37/365. Things are progressing with my #365 challenge. Now into month two, one thing I’ve noticed is that there isn’t many “people” shots. This is something I want to fix as “people” photography is actually my favourite genre especially candid or street style.
Today is Waitangi Day, our national day, which marks the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (an agreement signed in 1840 to promote a partnership between the British Crown and Māori). It’s a holiday day that brings us together but there is always a tinge of controversy with claims that Treaty obligations are not being met.
As part of their Waitangi Day celebrations, the Wellington City Council put on a festival at Chaffers Park. I caught Whirimako Black’s performance. She is one of our leading lights for singing in Te Reo (Māori).

36/365. This is a Weka one of New Zealand’s iconic flightless birds. Wekas are normally o.k. with human interaction. Their company can be a fantastic source of entertainment. If you live in an area with a good Weka population you need to close your doors to protect your home from being invaded. Their numbers have been threatened by ferrets and dogs. As much as I like dogs, I always find it weird how dog owners can allow their pets to roam unleashed in areas where rare endemic birds “nest”.

35/365. Kapa Haka is one of the things I most enjoy photography. It is a powerful expression of Māori identity and comprises a mix of different performances. The most powerful is the haka, which is a challenge. To watch Kapa Haka (which literally means line and dance) is to enjoy a feast of energy and a frenzy of excitement. The performers on stage deliver a variety of moods which can be fierce, electric, charming, graceful, harmonic and alluring. Kapa Haka is a most definite icon of New Zealand. Photographed are Tu Te Maungaroa ( Ngāi Tūhoe) performing at Haka in the Park (Wellington Regionals).

34/365. New Zealand is known as an adventure destination. We seem to enjoy jumping off or out of high things; be it bungee jumping or skydiving we’re addicted to the adrenaline. Even on Wellington’s waterfront you will find a diving platform that’s popular with locals and tourists alike. This week I’ve tried to capture icons of New Zealand’s life. Make jumping one of them.

33/365. I don’t think we’re nationalistic or ultra-patriotic but we do love our national sports team and we do want them to win. This particular evening turned out to be a disaster. Our Rugby League team lost their quarter-final to Fiji. We didn’t even make the semis of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup even though we were co-hosts. Another icon of New Zealand life is our love of sport.
