A little light and easy @weezledog_brewing_co Hoppiness XPA. XPA's are fast becoming a favourite of mine, when done well they're so easy to sit and session. This particular little number is full of flavour and has done a great job at hiding the 5.9%abv. Balanced malt and hops bitterness with typical citrus fruit notes 👌🏼 #craftbeer #craftbrew #craftbeers #craftyfollow #craftbeerlover #craftbeerporn #craftbeergirl #craftbeerlife #craftbeerenthusiast #craftbeergeek #craftbeeraddict #craftbeerjunkie #beer #beersnob #beerblog #beergirl #beerstagram #beerlovers #beertography #beerlover #beerglass #beergeek #instabeer #nzbeer #nzbrewery #nzcraftbeer #nzcraftygirl

@sierranevada Pale Ale, whole cone Cascade hops create the big pine and citrus notes that engulf this beer. Once you go black....well you can go back, but why would you want to?
Palettes are funny things. I didn’t always like dark beers, in fact, the thought of them made me dry heave a little. They were too malty, too creamy, and too rich. All I wanted when I first started indulging in craft beer was fresh, hoppy as hell IPA’s. It’s the same as drinking good wine, palette is everything and it can change (what seems like) overnight. As we head into winter (in the southern hemisphere anyway) and the nights are cold and long, I’ll be smacking back the darker side of things. Funnily enough my cherry popper was Garage Projects Cherry Bomb, pun intended. Produced by one of my favourite breweries, based out of Wellington, It’s an imperial porter, what a place to start. I didn’t even ease into I just dove straight into it balls deep. This decadent dessert beer is packed full of sour cherries and cacao nibs. Its smooth creamy mouth feel warms your entire being in the cold winter months. The bitter-sweet sour-malt balance is a perfect combination. I’d now seen dark beers in a completely new light (no pun intended). The beer of all beers that came next was Kereru Imperial Nibs. I had never tasted such a thing, cacao, coconut and malt all rolled into one beautiful little package. Another imperial porter (I really didn’t do this right did I?) It’s made with the finest cacao nibs from Wellington Chocolate Factory, vanilla pods and coconut, that’s been toasted over Manuka wood and bark. Makes me drool just describing it to ya’ll. Kereru makes many different dark beers of the porter and stout variety, well many beers in general, but their stouts are especially amazing. They’ve definitely found their niche, their forte, their calling in life. Exploring the world of dark beers takes a while, under the category falls dark ales/lagers, porters, imperial porters, stouts, barrel aged stouts, white stouts (sounds like an oxymoron really, but yes they do exist and they’re delicious), flavoured stouts (oatmeal, coconut, coffee) milk stouts, nitro stouts (these are bad ass), and so on and so forth. Once you get stuck in, it’s hard to want to drink anything else. Right now I’m turning my nose up at most IPA’s (total beer snob moment) and I can’t wait for all the seasonal release beers from my fave breweries. Welcome to the dark side Show me what you’re drinking, tag me in your dark beer posts on instagram (@nz_craftygirl) See you all at GABs in Auckland also!

Behemoth brewing company
Brewery Spotlight: BEHEMOTH. Andrew Childs, aka beer giraffe is the owner and founder of this awesome NZ micro brewery. In a former life Andrew was a lawyer, but this avenue bored him “Yes a law degree is a lot of time and money but life is too short to not do the things you love”. Brewing was a hobby, which one New Years turned into more. When challenged by a friend to start home brewing, things very quickly escalated. Andrew quit his job being a lawyer and started work with Fork and Brewer in Wellington. After a short stint here behind the bar, one of Andrew’s creations won him a spot in Wellington in a Pint to be paired up with a brewery to brew the beer, Celia Wade brown ale was the winning beer and he brewed this with the team at Yeastie Boys. Celia Wade is still a seasonal beer produced during the colder months by Behemoth. A rich dark ale packed with coffee flavours and subtle bitterness from all the hops jam packed into this little beauty. From here, Andrew was offered a role in Auckland with Imake, parent company to the home brew supply brand know as Mangrove Jacks. It was while working here as “the beer man” that Behemoth was born, with his first commercial beer being brewed at twisted hop “thanks to Martin and Lisa Bennett for helping me so much at the early stages” –Andrew. That’s the thing about craft beer, the community is so close knit, brewers and brew drinkers and all involved are always willing to lend a helping hand. This was even more prevalent after an incident in 2015, that left Andrew and fellow brewer Jason from 8 wired in hospital. An accident occured in the brewery, brewing “in ya face” (no pun intended this was literally the name of the beer BEFORE the accident) that left burns to 40% of their bodies, people in the beer community banded together to help in any way they could for the boys full recovery. Liquorland had “In ya Face” on tap, and for every litre poured, $1 was donated to the give a little page set up. Behemoth is now a very successful micro brewery, contract brewing out of a few different places and teaming up with several other breweries for some awesome co-labs, Andrew has created an awesome portfolio and a solid market of followers. Having brewed about 30 different beers now, and a lot of these being crazy one off’s Andrew is always coming up with new creations. The beer branding is so recognisable, Churly bear makes an appearance on the label of every beer dressed in a different outfit, one of my faves being Jules Winnfield on the Tasty Beverage can. Definitely one to watch, follow @behemothbrewingcompany on instagram and facebook for all the up to date posts of all things Behemoth.

I'm a beer girl
Everyone remembers their first craft beer, that cherry popper, when the mundane becomes the extraordinary. My obsession with craft beer began back in 2013 when I tried Harringtons Rogue Hop Pilsner. It was an enlightening experience, I had never enjoyed water, malts and hops in such a way before. For me, craft beer is an expression of personality; it’s more than buying a 12pk to knock back on a Friday night. I drink craft beer because it transports you through a journey of great proportions. Brewers are able to be crazy and extreme, and often you can taste the passion that comes through their brews. It also creates a community, like minded people who share stories of the good, the bad and the ugly craft beers that are on the market. In NZ we are pretty behind on the race to be honest. But we’re catching up in leaps and bounds. I’ve tried craft beer from many different countries and the beer being produced in NZ is definitely world quality. We have micro breweries popping up all the time, when home brewing becomes a passion, in turn it ends up a business. If you’re ever in NZ, try as many of our wonderful beers as you can. I guarantee you’ll come across some you hate, but you’ll also come across many that you love. We don’t have a huge export market either, so chances are you won’t find your faves anywhere else in the world. My favourite hop variety? Hmmm, probably Rakau hops. Notoriously hard to brew with, but when it’s done right, then man it makes a bloody good beer. Hop Federation is a small brewery in the small NZ town of Riwaka, they produce a Rakau IPA, which is in my top 5 favourite beers ever. Head brewer Simon Nicholas entered a brew competition in 2014, Marchfest. Each brewer picks a hop variety out of hat and has to make a new brew with that hop and they enter them into competition. Being new to the scene Simon was offered a second choice if he wanted it, as he pulled the notorious Rakau hop. He kept the first choice, brewed with Rakau hops, won the competition and that beer remains the same beer bottled under the Rakau IPA label. I used to be all about pale ale’s and IPA’s. I went through a phase of DIPA’s, the bigger the better, the bitterer the beer the more I rated it. Palettes are funny things, they change so much. Lately (it’s been summer here up until recently) I’ve been really digging sour beers and Gose’s. It reminds me of my childhood and chowing down on a bag of sour lollies at the movies. I’ve also just gotten into Stouts, perfect timing really with winter just around the corner. Follow me on Instagram and Untappd to see all the weird and wonderful beers I’m trying!
