After six weeks of heme/onc and a crazy week of night floats (managing both covid and non-covid patients), I can say I’m beyond excited for a week-long staycation, when I’ll finally get to do things I’ve never had the time for! Plus, I’ll get to rest and recharge before a much dreaded, very intense month coming ahead…

Honestly I completely forgot I had this blog for a while. I might as well update the few followers I have on what’s been going on. After I failed out of my RN program I took my boards exam and became an LPN. I’ve been working in the field ever since and now have the opportunity to go back for my RN. I’m overwhelmed with my options. I have three community colleges with LPN to RN programs available and a completely online LPN to BSN program that I’m looking into. The BSN program is most intriguing, however the price and the completely online nursing courses intimidate me. I have an incredible support system that believes I will do well in whichever program I choose, but I know it will take a lot of self discipline no matter what I do. For now, however, I’ll enjoy my iced coffee and study for my first microbiology exam ☺️

Hi there!

It kind of depends on what those subjects look like at your university (obviously), however, both of them require a lot of intense studying, much of which will simply be learning by heart. So creating a schedule, revising regularly and making sure you understand the material will be crucial in not getting behind. If you think that your general sense of discipline could be improved now is the time to do so

Have you ever been listening to Rainymood and thought, “Yeah, this is good … but it would be nice if I could customize the sound more, or if there was a little more choice.

Let me introduce you to MyNoise.

MyNoise is a customizable sounscape looper with so many options, even within each soundscape.  So say, for instance, you really love rain sounds when you write or study or relax.  Anything.  I know I’m a big fan of rain sounds.  They have a page for that.

But say you like really high, pattery rain, and LOTS of low thunder.  Here’s where MyNoise really stands out: you can customize that.  See those sliders with all the cute colors?  That is your equalizer. You can adjust the levels based on what you want to hear more and less of.  Here’s how it looks when you want high, pattery rain and low, rumbly thunder:

This site is seriously so helpful, and those are just a fraction of every kind of sounscape the site has to offer.  The best part is that if you want to layer it with music (for instance, I’ll layer a playlist + rain + coffee shop if the scene I’m writing takes place in a coffee shop), you can adjust the master volume, meaning all of your layers stay at their respective volumes, just louder or quieter.

New nurses, student nurses

I need you to know these things.

This job is hard. It’s hard as a student, learning things most people will never understand. It’s hard as a brand new nurse; no patient or seasoned nurse truly has faith in you.

You want to learn. You want to know things. You want to get to the point in your job where you are comfortable in your skills, the patients trust you, and the doctors start to know your name and believe in your abilities.

It takes time. The first year of nursing will be the hardest year of your life and you will find yourself truly doubting your intelligence and intellect for the first time ever. You will make mistakes, second guess yourself, cry after work, cry during work, cry before work. You will triumph, and you will fail miserably.

But with literally every single moment of every single day, you will learn so much more than you’ve ever learned in your entire life combined. You will learn about human suffering, joy, love, sorrow, insanity, and pain. You will experience moments that will haunt you forever. Moments you will bury down deep inside because the people closest to you could never understand.

Student nurses, stay with it. You aren’t there yet. School is hard. It does get harder. But it also gets better.

I was a student. Nursing school was the hardest thing I had ever done up to that point. I will not downplay that. Ever. It is so hard.

But then I was a new nurse. And it was harder. I experienced things that will haunt me to the grave. I was bullied by patients, doctors, and nurses.

I’m still learning. I’m still a baby nurse. But I’ve got a bit of time and a little experience under my belt now. I’ve been a nurse in the burn ICU, a med-surg nurse, and now a bone marrow transplant/oncology nurse. I’ve dealt with nurse bullies, bully doctors, and abusive patients and families. I’ve seen all kinds of sickness, I’ve welcomed new life, and I’ve held countless hands as their pulses faded away.

I’m here to tell you, student nurses, new nurses, that this job is hard. It is cruel and unforgiving at times.

But it is so worth it. It may get harder, but it will get easier as time goes on. The bonds you form with patients, doctors, and fellow nurses will bring you through it.

You knew it would be difficult when you chose such a selfless profession. This job takes heart. It takes a special kind of person that was meant to heal this harsh world.

Stay with it. It gets so much better. It is rewarding. We are here and we want you to succeed. Forget the nurse bullies, forget the bad. You are a guardian angel and you chose this noble path.

Thank you student nurses, thank you new nurses. I was there, not long ago. If I could go back and do it again, I would in a heartbeat. Because I am right where I want to be.

The best med student I’ve ever worked with

Her name is Jessica and from day one she’s jumped in to help with tasks most medical students wouldn’t “belittle” themselves with.

In her first week on nights in the ED I walked by a room and she was in there cleaning it. I passed the room and had to stop, back up, and stare at her. I’ve never seen a med student or doctor ever help us out like that.

The other day, I was triaging a patient at the bedside that had come in via rescue squad and she was right behind me. I turned to her and asked if she could give us a few minutes to get the patient in the computer and get their chart together before she did her assessment. She replied that she was there to help move the patient and do whatever else needed to be done, “if that’s ok?”

Most recently, she asked if she could put a Foley catheter in a patient with a broken hip before they went to OR.

She’s the nicest, sweetest, most sincere med student I’ve ever worked with. She understands the team mentality. She’s also wicked smart, assertive, confident, and has seemingly managed to find the balance of all those attributes.

She’s going to be a damn good doctor. Hopefully she’ll get placed with us when she graduates.

A note about LGBTQ+ and nursing

A good nurse will listen to you and address you however you want to be addressed.

We do need to know some things to help you with your care such as:

- which organs you have, don’t have, and what has been removed. (surgical history)

- if you are on hormone therapy: what kind, how long? (Medication history)

- who is your support system and do you feel safe at home?

- are you satisfied with your sex life and do you feel safe with your partner(s)?

These questions seem super personal, but it is our job to make sure that we are providing the best possible care. A lot of things differ when organs are different. (Ex. A trans woman that still has a prostate can still get prostate cancer.) Lab values change, and we can’t risk a misdiagnosis because we didn’t know details. And we are bound by HIPPA to keep your medical information private.

Nursing is a profession where you HAVE to be accepting of everyone. If you can’t, find another career.
