The Last Man of Mahana

Hidden at the very top of New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula and accessible only by off-road track is the Mahana commune. Founded in 1978, for nearly 40 years its inhabitants have been elusive. Their story has gone largely unreported. But now, parts of the utopian dream are turning sour. We visit Arthur, one of the remaining members of Mahana, to learn about his reclusive life, his battles with other residents, and his hopes of seeing the valley returned to its past glory.

The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition awards those who use their creative voices to document the state of the planet. The 2018 contest saw entries from 89 countries. In the end, five photographers were selected as winners for their powerful storytelling abilities and high-quality technique.

The human brain is composed of around 88 billion neurons,

with each neuron connecting to about 10,000 other neurons. Consciousness, as psychologist Axel Cleermans puts it, is one of the most significant problems of the 21st century. “It really remains a mystery how the biological activity of the brain produces minds,” explains Cleermans. In episode three of The Most Unknown, dark matter physicist Davide D’Angelo travels to Belgium to explore unusual consciousness experiments at Axel Cleermans’s lab. In the lab, researchers use thought-controlled robotic limbs—similar to the prosthetic limbs used by amputees—as a window into answering the enduring, perhaps unanswerable human question: What is Consciousness?

If you really have to, find someone who loves you well. Someone who never belittles you. Even in the heat of an argument. Someone who is gentle with you, but does not treat you like you are fragile. Someone who knows what you are capable of, and celebrates those pieces of you. Not someone who is intimidated by your strength. Someone who doesn’t make you feel guilty for being flawed. It is not love’s job to punish you. And remember the person you love is just as broken as you are when they fall short. No one is perfect – do not hold them to this standard. Find someone who is patient, forgiving, and apologetic. Someone who practices forgiveness freely and often. Love someone who is humble, kind, and empathetic. Not only with you, but with a beggar on the street, or a stranger in the supermarket. Common courtesy is important. Compassion is important. Kindness is important
