((Live Sport<<<)) Panthers vs Rabbitohs live 09.03.2023
After a round one upset by the Brisbane Broncos, the Penrith Panthers will be determined to get their first win of the season as they host the South Sydney Rabbitohs in a rematch of last year's preliminary final.
Watch Live Here>>>
Ivan Cleary and his side will be disappointed with how their opening match of the season turned out. They started well, scoring the opening try of the match but they had to wait another 69 minutes before adding more points onto the scoreboard. The absence of former hooker Apisai Koroisau was notable as Mitch Kenny failed to deliver any attacking prowess out of dummy-half, which was expected (more of a defensive hooker), however, when Soni Luke came from the bench, the Panthers started to look a better attacking side. His presence was felt immediately with a dangerous dart out of dummy-half in the first few minutes of his time on the field. It will take some time for Ivan Cleary to work out the right rotation for Kenny and Luke and they've probably come out of Friday nights match noting that Luke will need to come into the game earlier than he did against the Broncos.
On the brightside, their defence was excellent as we've come to expect, completing 90.6 per cent of their tackles for the match. The Broncos managed to score two tries in quick succession early in the first half but the opportunities were scarce after that. The Panthers defence will be a key for them restricting the potent Rabbitohs' attack on Thursday night. Penrith's back five will be crucial in getting them out of their own end and into good yardage positions which they did excellently on Friday night with the back five combing for 914 run metres. So, two crucial parts of their game were sound in the opening fixture, it's just the attacking cohesion that needs discovering, once they do that, they'll be back to their old ways. You can expect them to be fired up for this outing as they one, want to put their first win on the board and two, want to keep the wood over the Rabbitohs' after eliminating them in each of the last three finals series. After their loss last weekend, the Panthers have been required to make one change with the omission of Scott Sorenson to concussion who is replaced by Matt Eisenhuth.
Contrary to Penrith, the Rabbitohs' started the season with a comprehensive win in their opening fixture in Cronulla. It was tied heading into the break, but the Rabbitohs came out firing in the second half, winning that term of football 15 points to six. They were cohesive and dangerous in attack, breaking 52 tackles and were able to move the ball down the field with relative ease. Halfback Lachlan Ilias was excellent for the Rabbitohs as he opened the scoring for the home side, assisted one later on and saved a certain try for good measure. The 22-year-old looked extremely confident, and he's got a big test ahead of him this Thursday against the reigning premiers. Ilias' link up play with Walker will be key for the Rabbitohs as they're going to have to create some Penrith defensive errors if they're to put some scoreboard pressure on the Panthers.
Hopefully Souths' will have their full 17 players available for the entire match, unlike Saturday night where the played the final 60 minutes with 15 players after losing Tevita Tatola and Jai Arrow to injury in the first half. Losing two players that early against a Penrith side might make the going tough but let's hope that this isn't the case on Thursday night. Despite the lack of bench players, The Rabbitohs' defence was excellent for most of the game, making 91.4 per cent of their tackles, something that they'll need to replicate again this weekend if they're to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
The aforementioned injuries to Tatola and Arrow have ruled them out this week with Daniel Suluka Fifta starting at prop and Jed Cartwright joining the pine.
Last meeting: Finals Week 3 2022 - Panthers 32 Rabbitohs 12
Who to watch: This game has plenty of players to keep an eye out for as many of them have the ability to influence the result of this game. It's hard not to mention Nathan Cleary who will be extremely sour after their performance in round one and will be determined to deliver a win in front of their home crowd this Thursday. Cleary missed Koroisau's presence last week and Brisbane's defence did a good job at containing his ball playing, however, the halfback still threatened with his ball running and he'll be expecting to influence the game more than he did last week. One of his dummy-halves, Soni Luke is one to watch this week as he was explosive in his 26-minute stint against the Broncos, scoring a try, running for 65 metres, breaking the line once and making 13 tackles. His sleight of hand out of dummy-half will be key this weekend if they're to perturb Souths' middle defence.
Lachlan Ilias is another to keep an eye on this weekend, it'll be interesting to see whether he can back up his round one performance as the halfback seems destined to have a breakout year but it's fullback Latrell Mitchell who'll draw the most attention from Penrith's defence. Mitchell carried the ball for 127 metres on the weekend, assisted a try and broke four tackles as he kicked off 2023 with a bang. One player who benefited from the ball-playing of Mitchell on the weekend was Campbell Graham who fresh off a winning World Cup campaign, grabbed a double to kick of his season. The 23-year-old centre was damaging with his three line breaks, 198 metres (60 of those after contact), five tackle breaks and 19 tackles. If Souths' can give Mitchell and Graham time and space on that right edge, it could cause some headaches for Penrith's opposing edge.
The favourite: Despite their loss in round one, the Panthers are still the slight favourites. It took a great performance from the Broncos to get the two points and given the track record between these two sides, the Rabbitohs will need to do the same to secure the win. Panthers losing two in a row at home? It could happen, but they'll be incredibly determined to make sure it doesn't come to fruition.
My tip: This should be a cracking match, with the Panthers being brought down a peg, the two teams are incredibly even. I think Penrith are going to sneak home here but that depends on a better attacking performance than last week. The Bunnies will throw everything at the defending premiers and they want revenge from their last outing. It should be a cracker. Penrith by 1.

Watch NRL Live Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos On 03 March 2023
Penrith Panthers, the champions of the 2022 National Rugby Championship, will begin their 2023 season against the Brisbane Broncos at BlueBet Stadium. In the World Club Challenge Cup, the Penrith Panthers were defeated by the St. Helens team, while the Brisbane Broncos triumphed over the NQ Cowboys team.Watch Live

Penrith Panthers - favorite to win The incredible work that the Penrith Panthers put in over the previous season resulted in them finishing first on the table in the regular season with 42 points from a possible 24. The home team in the 2022 season scored 636 points, the most points of any club in the league, and allowed 330 points, the fewest points allowed in that season. The Penrith Panthers, on the other hand, went further in the playoffs and won the final game. Before this, they had prevailed against the Parramatta Eels in the 1/8 round, the Canberra Raiders in the quarterfinal stages, and the North Queensland Cowboys in the semis. Prior to the start of this season, the Penrith Panthers had a winning record of four out of their previous five matches.
Brisbane Broncos - will hope for an good start The Brisbane Broncos beat the North Queensland Cowboys in their last preseason game, so they are coming into this game with a bit of momentum. On the other hand, this will be a different matchup for them, with more stringent requirements and demands. The Brisbane Broncos had 28 points at the end of the regular season last year, which put them ninth in the National Rugby League standings. However, they did not make the playoffs. The away team's record in their last five games was one win, one tie, and three losses. This means that they will start the new season with the same record.
Expert Betting Tips After a quick examination, it appears that the team playing at home has the advantage and is best positioned to come out on top. As a result, we are pulling for them to launch the defense of their championship with a performance that is completely dominant. As a result, I am hoping that they will prevail in both halves of the match. In addition, taking into account the players they have available and how well they played during the preseason, I feel that they will be able to cover the spread.
THE TEAM NEWS
PENRITH PANTHERS
Penrith Panthers made it back-to-back Premierships as they defended their crown with a comfortable win over Parramatta Eels in last season's Grand Final with Ivan Cleary’s men harbouring hopes of a three-peat. The Panthers fell short in the World Club Challenge against St. Helens but will be in much better shape for this, although they will have to deal with the loss of Taylan May for the entire campaign after he suffered an ACL injury against the English outfit. Starting 13: Edwards, Turuva, Tago, Crichton, To’o, Luai, Cleary, Leota, Kenny, Fisher-Harris, Garner, Martin, Yeo – Interchanges: Luke, Sorensen, Leniu, Salmon – Reserves: Hosking, Eisenhuth, Peachey, Cogger, Smith
Unavailable: Taylan May (Injured)
BRISBANE BRONCOS
Brisbane Broncos somehow missed out on a spot in the finals in 2022 as they lost five of their final six games to finish the regular season in what was a hugely disappointing end to what had been a promising campaign. The Broncos will view a top eight spot as the bare minimum this season but they have been forced into a re-jig for this opening contest with new signing Reece Walsh out with a facial fracture so Selwyn Cobbo will slot in at fullback. Starting 13: Cobbo, Oates, Staggs, Farnworth, Arthars, Mam, Reynolds, Jensen, Walters, Haas, Capewell, Riki, Carrigan – Interchanges: Paix, Palasia, Flagler, Taupau – Reserves: Mariner, Piakura, Willison, Madden, Hoeter
Unavailable: Kobe Hetherington (Injured), Reece Walsh (Injured)

MATCHDAY PREVIEW After a four-year absence, Wellington will host the opening Warriors game for 2023 when they take on the Newcastle Knights on Friday night.
In the last NRL fixture at Sky Stadium in July 2019 it was Blake Green’s field goal that was the difference in the Warriors win over the Sharks. Ironically it will be the Sharks five-eighth in that game who will hold the key to the Warriors success.
Starting his 13th season in the top grade, Shaun Johnson is in the twilight of his career and will be out to prove to his new coach Andrew Webster that he’s worthy of a new deal for the 2024 season. The interest will be in how he combines with fellow Kiwi, Te Maire Martin who makes his official debut for the club.
On the other side, Kalyn Ponga and Jackson Hastings will pair in the halves for the first time with former Sharks fullback Lachlan Miller making his club debut. The new halves combination can only be a positive after Adam O’Brien struggled to find the right combination during their last campaign.
The Warriors will be wary of the Newcastle Knights ability to start off the season strong. Last year they famously took out the Roosters at the Sydney Cricket Ground to open their campaign and their unbeaten record in round 1 dates back to 2018.
Newcastle have been dealt a blow with experienced Australian and Queensland centre Dane Gagai missing the trip to New Zealand’s capital, but the club hopes he will be available for their match against the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval to take place Sunday week.

The Parramatta Eels will face the Melbourne Storm in the opening game of the National Rugby League season in 2023 at Accor Stadium. The preseason for the home team concluded with a victory over the Newcastle Knights, while the preseason for the Melbourne Storm included only one victory, which came against the New Zealand Warriors.

Parramatta Eels - will hope for a better campaign The 2022 NRL season was one of the best for the Eels. They finished fourth, behind the Cowboys, the Cronulla Sharks, and the Penrith Panthers. The Eels won 34 points from a total of 24 games. They scored 608 goals and let other teams score 489 goals against them. They were able to get past the Canberra Raiders in the quarterfinals and the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the semifinals on their way to a loss to the Panthers in the championship game. This was despite the fact that they had a fantastic postseason overall. We are now hoping for an incredible start from the host, even though they will now hope to make it to the playoffs in the regular season even if they are unable to clinch the position at the top of the table.
Melbourne Storm - slightly favored on the road The lone scheduled preseason match that Melbourne Storm participated in resulted in the team's victory over the New Zealand Warriors away from their own stadium, and the team will now enter the new season in a position of strength. After a disappointing finish to their NRL season in 2022, the away team will be hoping for better results this year, despite the fact that there are many aspects of their game that still need to be worked on and improved. In the 2022 National Rugby League season, the Melbourne Storm accumulated 32 points over the course of 24 games, which was good for fifth place overall.
Expert Betting Tips The two teams are formidable, and there is no doubt that each has an exceptional roster capable of giving them an advantage in this contest. Even if we anticipate that they will enter this competition with a high level of preparation, the odds are still in favor of the home team winning. We also think the game will go on for a long time, with both teams scoring a lot of points because of how well they play on offense. As a result, we eagerly anticipate a contest that will end in overs.

Fifita’s call ‘edging closer’ as frontrunner emerges; Roosters veteran squeezed out
Titans superstar David Fifita is set to make a huge call on his future with two clubs vying for his signature.
Meanwhile, a Roosters veteran is on the radar of Super League clubs as he enters the final year of his contract.
Read below for all NRL Transfer Whispers!
FIFIFTA’S BIG CONTRACT CALL
Titans star David Fifita is reportedly “edging closer” to making a huge decision on his future with both the Raiders and Titans vying for his signature.
According to The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio, the Gold Coast club have their noses in front of Ricky Stuart’s Raiders.
Riccio also believes that the Titans are hoping to secure Fifita’s partner, Shaylee Bent, for their NRLW side.
Fifita’s huge $1.25 million per-season contract is set to run out at the end of the 2023 season and the Raiders were reportedly offering a deal worth around $900,000 per-year.
Despite touring the Raiders’ facilities with Bent, Fifita is set to snub Stuart’s advances and continue under Justin Holbrook.
“It is edging closer, I would argue that the Titans are the frontrunners here for David Fifita’s signature, and it is on the basis that the Titans are also attempting to sign his partner in the NRLW competition,” Riccio said on NRL360.
“The Raiders haven’t given up hope, but they are thinking that David is leaning towards the Titans.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if David actually plays out a few weeks of the season before making a call whether this year will fell different, and look different as far as the Titans are concerned.
“The Raiders have had a big swing at him.”

Robati had been stood down in January in the wake of charges arising from an incident at a nightclub during the off-season, before he was charged with unlicenced driving in late January.
In 2021 he was also fined and had his licence suspended after pleading guilty to dangerous operation of a car.

As part of the process for finalising this season's squad, forward TC Robati has been released from his contract with the club," the statement read.
Robati made just 17 appearances across two seasons with the Broncos, and hasn't played since their round 14 win over the Raiders last season.
It's been a difficult off-season for Brisbane - losing several experienced players, while their only big name-signing, Reece Walsh, is in a race to be fit for round one after suffering a facial fracture during trials.
Tesi Niu and Brenko Lee (Dolphins), David Mead and Ryan James (retired), Te Maire Martin (Warriors), Tyson Gamble (Knights), Jake Turpin (Roosters) and Zac Hosking (Panthers) all left the club in the off season.
The Broncos get their season underway against the Panthers at BlueBet Stadium next Friday night.

The new NRL season is just eight days away
The new NRL season is just eight days away, with Fox League launching its coverage of the new campaign in style on Wednesday in Sydney.
As part of the event, a trio of experts took to the stage to share their predictions for how the 2023 season will play out. From the challengers for the title to the best buy of the season, here’s what Matthew Johns, Cooper Cronk and Paul Kent had to say on some of the game’s biggest topics!
WHO WILL WIN?
Penrith have gone back-to-back, but their hopes of a three-peat took a big hit with the departure of a number of key figures to rival clubs.
However, Cooper Cronk believes they can still set the standard for their rivals to hunt down.
Cronk said: “Absolutely they can be (the benchmark). I think the top four will be there again … I think defence is king and they’re the four best defensive teams.
“They were a little disappointing in the World Club Challenge, but I think Penrith can definitely put it back three times in a row.
“I think Melbourne Storm, the Roosters, the Cowboys are a great club. I think what Todd Payten has done there in terms of resetting the whole base, the expectations of what it means to be a Cowboy is a really good thing.
“Parramatta as well. I think the five best defensive teams in our competition will be fighting it out again.”
