last minute complications
alternatively titled: the maddening joys(???) of self-publishing
I hope to god any of this makes sense, brain is feeling a bit fractured & the vodka isn't patching it together fast enough.
(Also this is significantly longer than I meant it to be, jfc.)
It's been a hectic week. Lot of bright points! Lot of chaos. Mom's final post-op checkup to see if she can return to work is next week, so there are quite a few appts she's trying to squeeze in at the last minute now that she has enough energy to be out of the apartment. This afternoon I finally had time to sit down with D2D and KDP to look things over, and I have some mixed news to report.
So the prev English ebooks were published via Smashwords and Amazon, yeah? Smashwords handles like… kobo, apple, overdrive, etc. Smashwords recently merged with Draft2Digital for some reason, so the interface and process are completely new. Before there was a long style guide that helped you reformat a file to be nice & shiny, now it's fully automated. Very very quick. Absolutely no workarounds for minor tweaks. So the formatting for TSC is going to be slightly different from the first book (example: the chapter headers are big, because you literally cannot opt to keep them small).
Anyway!! Here is where it gets a little funky. The earliest D2D will accept as a preorder publication date is the 14th. The earliest Amazon's KDP will allow is the 15th. Obviously neither of these dates are ideal, which means we're doing it manually (see: I have to go in and push the "hell yeah, my book is ready NOW" button). That's where the potential complication arises.
Once you smack the PUBLISH button, the sites do an automated review to check for massive issues. KDP claims it takes 3-10 days for print and up to 72 hours for ebook. I've seen some ppl say it took 48hrs for the book to go live and numerous others say it only took a few minutes or hours. All of this to say: I have no idea what time the books will actually show up online once I poke the "Let's do this" option.
So the current plan is to try and account for this delay. I'm going to try and start the "please go live Now" process early afternoon here on Friday the 12th (central time USA, about 5hrs behind GMT and 7hrs behind CET). If evening comes around here and KDP still hates our guts, I've researched some alternative options to make sure it's actually available somewhere on the 13th (e.g. payhip).
I honestly don't think it'll come down to that--I'm 99% sure even TKM only took a couple hours to get approved, and I'm hoping it helps that I have existing projects on both sites. But!! Because it's a funky situation, wanted to make sure we're all on the same page. And I want to apologize for making it a complicated mess. Maybe we'll take a proper peek at the cover later to cheer us up.
