So I was at yesterday’s show with rj Paul, Dan darry, and jpc soda??? AHHH? I know I promised a jpc Darrel analysis and that’s coming I swear, along with now a jpc soda because I’ve been fortunate enough to see him twice

But I wanted to take a moment to give Dan his flowers because he truly is such an incredible actor. I’ve seen him three times now (kinda crazy considering I’ve seen the show seven times. Also only seen Brent comer twice???? Brent is scared of me or something but I digress) but today was such a stand out from the other two times. Specifically during ritfr. Because I didn’t just see anger in his face. He was on the verge of breaking down the whole time he was yelling at pony and I think that’s such a genius choice because it shows a new depth to Darrel that makes the transition into titt so much smoother. He’s so fucking scared about everything and he can’t just say that. But you see it on his face.

Also side note, why does jpc soda grind into two bit during the “prettiest one on your arm” line 🤨📸🏳️‍🌈 like victor does it but nowhere near as much as jpc

We talk a lot about Darry reading Ponyboy’s theme in this fandom and I understand the angst that comes with him hearing Ponyboy’s true thoughts about him, but first and foremost Darrel Curtis is a GUARDIAN. I genuinely think his biggest takeaway would be how much Ponyboy self medicates and how clearly it’s a problem that requires intervention. Darry’s responsible for this kid, his baby brother, you’d best believe concern would trump any pain he might be feeling, and suddenly he’s locking up pills and handing out aspirin to make sure Pony isn’t triple dosing himself, because he will not watch Pony destroy himself. He won’t. Even if Pony hates him for it for real this time.

Something we don’t talk about enough in this fandom is that when Darry was a senior in high school, the boy of the year, football star, beloved by greasers and socs alike- Sodapop, who is canonically almost four years younger than him (sixteen turning seventeen when Darry is twenty turning twenty one) would be just starting high school as a freshman, alongside Steve and Johnny. I can’t imagine it was easy for him, a Curtis who is nothing like his older brother except for his charm and his easy smiles. But he isn’t Darry, and I think it would be obvious to everyone from day one. Sodapop couldn’t hide the grease in him if he tried. He’s in remedial English instead of A level classes and the socs never let him hear the end of it. He doesn’t seem to understand football or care about sports or debate team or any other important school groups. Teachers see his name and sigh, not wanting to deal with his troublemaking, especially if Steve’s in class with him, whereas any teacher would be happy to have Darry in their class. No matter how he tries to disguise himself and set himself apart, he’s forever in Darry’s shadow, the way he is on the east side, the way he always is and always has been. Stupid, smiling, troublesome Sodapop is nothing compared to Darry, perfectly Darry, beloved by everyone- even those who should be their enemies. I just think it would wear on him, a noose around his neck. By the time he gets his first term report card and sees a string of Fs while Darry’s is straight As he’s already thinking of dropping out, even though he knows mom would never allow it, because what’s the point? He’ll never be as good as Darry, not ever, no matter how much he wants to be.

and the worst part? He can’t even be upset about it. Darry is still a good brother. He ruffles Soda’s hair when he passes him in the halls and eats lunch with the gang whenever his football buddies are busy and never tries to hide soda even from his richest and snobbiest friends. He plays with Ponyboy at home before he goes to any party or social gathering and still helps out in a rumble anytime he’s needed, a pillar of east side pride. Soda sees it all and hates him for it and hates himself even more.
