Liam Smith - A Shot of Wildlife
We love the wildlife films made by Liam, taking us though the natural world out there in the different parts of the county. But we wanted to know what inspired him to get started and some of his favourite wildlife moments.
The film above is from Titchwell. It’s one of his latest - but there so many more on his YouTube site - A Shot Of Wildlife.
To find out more read on....
Liam told us, “I have always loved nature. For as long as I can remember I have been interested and intrigued by the wildlife that’s all around us. From the smallest ants in our gardens (and sometimes our houses), to the massive grey seals along the north Norfolk coast, I am fascinated by it all.
“This is what led me to taking a course in animal care at Great Yarmouth College and then on to a degree in zoology in Cambridge. Since graduating I have spent some time working in wildlife rehab at a local animal sanctuary and now work for Norfolk Biodiversity Information Service.
“In order to have an even bigger impact and to help to connect more people with nature, I have been traveling around Norfolk producing short documentaries about our greatest wildlife spots and spectacles. These videos are all freely available on YouTube and aim to provide bite-size, entertaining content that showcases just how lucky we are with the amazing wildlife that we have in Norfolk and the UK as whole.”

The Ballad Of Susan Nobes
Performed by Waywood
This film tells the story of Susan Nobes - a 14 year old girl from Sedgeford in Norfolk, who was killed in a freak storm on the 5th July 1819 in the village Church. It is a song from poet Gareth Calway and harpist Vanessa Wood-Davies, filmed by Bhas Allan. It was sent into BBC Upload. If you have a story, a ballad, a poem, a film, send it to us at bbc.co.uk/upload. For the full story of Susan, read on!
This is a song and poem that tells the sad story of 14 year old Susan Nobes. Susan lived in the village of Sedgeford and died in a freak accident on the 5th July 1819. The story was sent to us by Gareth Calway on BBC Upload at bbc.co.uk/upload. Gareth was researching in the British Library when he came upon this story. On that night there was a terrible thunderstorm and a lightning flash struck the top of Sedgeford Church Steeple. This is how the story unfolded:
"Come the evening, folk were going about their daily tasks, working in the fields while birds sweetly sang. The teacher sat in the porch waiting for the schoolmaster to appear before Bible reading class could begin, meanwhile the attending children happily played, running up and down the churchyard, little knowing the impending doom that was to befall them. The schoolmaster duly arrived, readings began and when done was followed with a final hymn, 'Oh let me, heavenly Lord extend, My view to life's approaching end... . "(Religious tract 1819, probably by the then Curate of Sedgeford.)
It was at that point the lightning hit. It precipitated to the ground several stones of considerable magnitude making a breach in the wall of about a yard square. The lightning also passed through the Church entering in at a window near the porch on the South side; and after crossing in a North East direction, it made its escape at two places in an upper window near the Chancel on the North side". (as reported in the Times, the Ipswich Journal and the Register of World News 1819-20)
"The children rushed out of the church nearly in a state of distraction, uttering the most dreadful shrieks; parents in search of their children; the incessant and vivid flashes of lightning, succeeded momentarily by dreadful peals of thunder, accompanied with torrents of rain and hail, such as were never remembered by the oldest inhabitants, formed a scene truly terrific.
"A girl, about 14 years of age, the daughter of Robert Nobes was left in the school room, and on being missed her father went in search of her, when on entering the room, he found her lifeless on the floor.
"Fear is supposed to have been the cause of death, as there was no appearance of the electric fluid having entered the room."
On Friday 5th July 2019 to mark the bicentenary of Susan's death resident poet Gareth Calway and harpist Vanessa Wood-Davies performed their Ballad of Susan Nobes.
This is the film of that event. Look out for the wildlife too! Beautiful location and additional research provided by Village historian Tim Snelling provided the beautiful location and additional research. If you have a story to tell, a song to sing or a film to show head to bbc.co.uk/upload

Jaydn Johnson Egypt Travel Video
Director@ Jaydn Johnson
This video was submitted by Jaydn to BBC Upload. It’s the story of an amazing experience, going to Egypt for the first time for a family wedding. If you’re making or doing things, have something to say, go to bbc.co.uk/upload. This is what Jaydn had to say about his film: “I got the exclusives from the temples and the wedding. But as ever with travel, there’s always a story to tell...
“So the video didn't go all to plan. On the day of the flight, the flight was delayed by 18hrs. The plane finally left the next day and touched down in Luxor at 12 o'clock Egyptian time.
“We went to the hotel and to my suprise there was 3 swimming pools and it was HOT! weather. On the Wednesday I went to The Valley Of The Kings where Pharoahs were laid to rest when they passed.
“On the Thursday it was the The Karnak Light and Sound show which was an amazing experience. The Friday was the Egypytian version of a Hen Do where everyone could have some fun. The Saturday we left Luxor and caught the train to Aswan and it was very difficult finding our cart because everythijng was in Arabic.
“Till the wedding we just chilled out near the pool because to get to Aswan you have to cross the River Nile which was a pain. The wedding was an Awesome Experience and was basically our last day in Egypt. Meeting family of family. It was a great occasion to attend and I was gutted to be leaving.
“For anyone thinking about visiting Egypt, I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy like i did!”

Jonathan Trumbull
Director - John Watt
Jonathan Trumbull has been a fixture in Norwich since the '70s for people wanting high class fashions. It's the story of one family that built a series of shops including Chadds, Hatters and Ginger as well as Trumbull's. This film from BBC Voices tells the story of the father and two sons and how they how kept abreast of the times for nearly 50 years.
It was in 1971 that two brothers from Norwich decided to follow a dream and open a men's fashion store in the centre of the city.
David and Roger Kingsley both had experience in working in the thriving and exciting fashion industry of the King's Road in London and the support of a father who already had a well established shop in the area, Chadds. Shops such as Harry Fenton, Mister Byrite, Andersons and others were around in those early years but it was Jonathan Trumbull that began to offer the new high quality fashion labels.
It certainly wasn't a given that the business would flourish but who would have thought that nearly 50 years later it would still be an expanded and thriving concern.

From Start To Finish
Director Emmaalouise Smith
The latest in Emmaalouise's film series for BBC Radio Norfolk is: From Start to Finish. A mixed medium doc telling the story of 3 exceptional female runners.
It follows them as they describe their first time out on the pavement, between the 1980’s and present day. They talk of wellness, determination and the need for placing one foot in front of the other.
Emmaalouise told us, “I’ve wanted to explore running from the female-specific lens for sometime. I wanted to uncover the everyday superhero, the women battling the impossible to some, and I wanted to highlight the importance of the ‘can-do'/’will-do’ attitude.
“I’ve been running myself for 2-3 years, not so much lately due to other commitments, but as soon as I began making the sport part of my routine, and ran more and more with others, of all ages and abilities, I quickly became drawn to the other characters I was training alongside. Particularly the women.”
