I used to work at a huge law firm in D.C. Now I work for an NGO on programs in Africa. I'm living the dream, but it's a very under-funded dream. Welcome to my world of raman. #causes #africa #non-profit news #life in DC

World Refugee Day!
Tumblr media
World Refugee Day is coming and there are lots of great events in D.C. including a play, art exhibit, and reception in honor of refugees from Afganistan featuring Khaled Hosseini. There is also a reception and film exhibit in San Diego if you happen to be a west coaster.
June 16: MOPA's World Refugee Day Celebration (Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, CA)
June 20: Live Performance of No Place Called Home (Play with introduction by Khaled Hosseini) (Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Washington, D.C.)
June 21: World Refugee Day Collaboration (Collaborative Performance with an introduction from Khaled Hosseini) (Eighteenth Street Lounge, Washington, D.C.)
June 18-26: Multimedia Art Exhibit (Kennedy Center Hall of Nations, Washington, D.C.)
June 23: World Refugee Day Celebration (St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Falls Church, VA)
Why should you care? There are more than 16 million refugees in the world. Another 26 million people are displaced within their country or are considered asylum-seekers. Developing countries host more than 80% of refugees, often resulting in violence and other issues in the host countries as well.
For more statistics on the status of refugees around the world, try the UNHRC here.

Slavery Footprint
Tumblr media
The State Department has developed a brief interactive survey online that allows you to see how many slaves it takes to support your lifestyle. Take it here.
It takes 32 to support mine. I do anti-trafficking work for a living and still, 32. It's wrong.
Take the survey and then either follow the helpful links provided to help or click here for a list of twenty things you can do to help combat modern day slavery.

Interesting ways to avoid getting gauged for lunch in DC. Essential when you're on a non-profit budget.

Welcome!
I think that the description of this blog really says it all, but if you're finding your way here I'd like to say hello. I'm interested in many, many things but am going to try to limit myself in this blogs to posts about a circumspect list of topics, including: non-profit work, life in DC on a non-profit budget, and...we'll see what else. FOCUS, Jessica, focus.
