Craigslist Joe
Craigslist Joe is a documentary about a man, Joseph Garner who lives for a month just off of things that he can get from craigslist. This movie was produced by Zach Galifianakis and directed by Joseph Garner. Joseph got the idea for this movie while he was working as the assistant director for The Hangover.Through out this documentary joe travels around the country for one month (31 days) meeting people and trying new things. All through out his travels he is blown away by the generosity of complete strangers. People invite him into their houses to talk to their families. They give him a place to sleep, food to eat, and clean clothes to wear. Many times through out this documentary Joe is reduced to tears by the stories he hears about peoples trials and tribulations. Although this was a well made documentary one negative thing stuck out to me. Joe Garner was a white man and because of this he felt safe and comfortable getting in strangers cars and sleeping in strangers homes. While I was watching this I tried to put my self in his place. It seemed like a really fun adventure, one that I would love to experience. But the thought of putting myself in all of those vulnerable situations would make me very scared. I don’t think that Joe realized the privilege he had. That made me angry. I can barely walk down a slightly busy street with out feeling slightly on-edge and afraid for my safety. And yet Joe can travel around the country with strangers he meet online? If he would have recognized and addressed the fact that he was very lucky to be able to experience the adventure he had I would have felt better about this movie.

Portrait of a Russian Oligarch
Portrait of a Russian Oligarch is a short video that takes a look into the lives of the upper-class citizens of Russia. After Communism was widely abolished in Russia the government had to decide how to split up funds that where seised by the government under communist rule. This lead to a few well connected citizens becoming very very wealthy. This video focuses on the Russian Oligarch Sergey Veremeenko. The reporter, Ryan Duffy went to visit Sergey at his expansive mansion house. He began the visit by having lunch with Sergey and his young wife. After that Sergey gave Duffy a tour of his private museum of religious icons. Next they went to Sergey’s hunting cabin. Duffy was surprised when Sergey’s staff placed bait in an open field, then Duffy and Sergey shot at them from inside a heated building. Overall this documentary was interesting and informational. I think that it did a good job of showing the extreme excess that the Russian upper-class lives with.

Teenage Exorcists
Teenage Exorcists is a Vice documentary for their series FRINGES. In this video a documentarian travels with a group of three american teenage girls and their leader ( who just happens to be a white man) to Ukraine. These girls are called the Teenage Exorcists because under the direction of their leader they travel around helping people get rid of their demons. This video was incredibly interesting and touch on many point that I felt where true. The documentarian was not religious herself which added to the doubt cast over the whole process.I think that it also made this video incredibly bias. I did not mind because the bias happened to align with my views on the subject. The biggest flaw in this documentary was the fact that they would interview people and because it was Ukraine they would respond in Ukrainian, and then there was no subtitles. So for almost half of the video you had no clue what people where saying.

“What Happens to a Family When Their Child Is Struggling with Severe Mental Illness?”
“What Happens to a Family When Their Child Is Struggling with Severe Mental Illness?” is a Vice documentary that tries to exposes the pressures put on a family when one of the children suffers from mental illness. Although it starts off promising, with a child named Maisie’s mother talking about the hardships she goes through everyday. It quick goes downhill when the remaining 8 minutes is Maisie’s Mother talking in her car while driving to visit her daughter. The problem with this documentary is that most of it is the Mother focusing on her problems. While talking care of a child with disabilities is never easy I felt that this documentary focused too much on mother and said almost nothing about the child. In fact we never saw the child or learned anything about her. While I understand that the subject of this documentary was the affect on families the fact that we never see the child or learn anything about it makes this video very uninteresting.

Waiting for 'Superman'
On the surface Waiting for 'Superman' is a documentary exposing the wrongs of the education system in america. Before I discuss the controversy surrounding this movie and the things that they did wrong, I will talk about the good things. This movie is very pleasing to watch. From the start it hooks you and as you watch with out realizing it, you are pulled closer and closer until, by the end you are wrapped up tightly in the web spun by the film. They use pretty animations and infographics to present statistics, cute children and struggling parents to persuade their point.
In my opinion the problem with this movie is that it presents the film makers point of view as definite fact. This movie leads you to believe that every public school is a failure factory, and the the ONLY answers to fixing our education system is charter schools. While I will be one of the first people say that, yes there are major problems with public school systems I must admit Waiting for 'Superman' blows this opinion out of proportion. They completely disregard other solution to our problems.
In a time where my public school system experience is threatening to be drastically changed in the near future it was very easy for me to get caught up in the mob mentality the is Waiting for 'Superman'. I greatly appreciated this because it forced me to think very hard about my true feelings. I had to try and find the difference between what this movie was telling me to believe and what I did truly believe. For that reason I think that this is a very important film for any person who as ever gone to or know someone who has gone to school in america.

The Chapman Brothers
The Chapman Brothers is a shot documentary produced by Vice.Com and Raf Katigba as part of their Vice Meets series. This documentary is about two artists, Jake and Dinos Chapman. Together they make satirical, controversial works of art. This documentary has a very nonchalant attitude to it. This mixed with a modern soundtrack left me with a very uneasy feeling when I was finished watching it. This uneasy feeling fits very well with the art that these to brothers create. Overall this documentary was well made and entertaining.

On Thin Ice
On Thin Ice is a video in the New York Times op-doc series. This video was about car racing in rural New Hampshire. But there’s a twist, they race on a frozen pond. This video centered on a family struggling to make ends meet.
This video starts by introducing the sport. Showing shots of races, and contestants working on their cars. After this the doc. focuses in on a specific family. This is when we learn about their financial troubles. Most all of the members in this family race cars that they have built or modified themselves. We learn that this family’s future is unsure, they don’t know where they are going to make a living, as they have lost their jobs.
The end of the video is the most poignant part of the whole thing. Father and son race against each other, and father wins. After the races excitement is in the air, there is a blanket of nonchalance masking the worries of the family. Everything seems fine until the mother ends this doc. by expressing her financial concerns. We fade out on a very powerful shoot of the mothers face in the cracked sideview mirror of her pick-up truck.

Detropia
Detropia showed a different side to Detroit. In the news we constantly are hearing how Detroit is struggling. It was very eye opening to see real people who live in Detroit and here from them what it is like to live there, and the struggles that they have everyday.

Detropia- Major Characters
Crystal Starr: Crystal is a video blogger that we get introduced to very early into the movie. In the beginning of the movie Crystal walks around an empty abandoned apartment and wonders who lived in it and what went on. This was one of my favorite parts of the movie because this is something that I also wonder about places. She is compelling to audiences because she stands up for people in need.
Tommy Stevens: Tommy Stevens is a retired school teacher who runs a bar called the Raven Lounge. The Raven Lounge allows for a physical representation for the overall mood of the movie. The bar is happy and and upbeat, but at the same time there is a dark cloud hanging over all of the people their. It keeps with the mood of everyone in the movie trying to save face and be positive.

Overall Impressions and Analysis
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I was skeptical at first, being someone who could honestly care less about sports. What was particularly powerful about this movie was its ability to draw in the audience in and form an emotional bond with the characters. I think that the reason this could happen was because most people can relate to being in high school and being passionate about something. That is all you need connect with this movie.

Narrator
The Heart Of The Game was narrated by Ludacris. This was most likely a marketing strategy to raise awareness for this documentary. Ludacris was a good narrator. Not necessarily an extremely talented or exciting narrator, but I hardly noticed that he was there. His narration fit seamlessly into the story line. Something that I thought was interesting is how, for me, another narrator emerged. Coach Bill Resler acted as an on screen narrator as he explained a lot of the action and backstories to what was going on. He also provided an inside view of the teams emotions.
