The Noise Pop Festival is San Francisco’s favorite indie music, arts and film festival. Now in its 22nd year, Noise Pop has brought early exposure to many emerging artists in the Bay Area and beyond, many of whom have gone on to widespread acclaim. Some notable acts who have played Noise Pop include the White Stripes, Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins, Bright Eyes, Best Coast, Jeff Tweedy, The Dodos, Girls and Antony and The Johnsons. The festival has also featured musical legends such as Yoko Ono and The Plastic Ono Band, Bob Mould, Yo La Tengo, X, Frank Black (of the Pixies), Sleater-Kinney and Television. In addition, the festival boasts a film series that explores the intersection of music and art; Pop-n-Shop, a local designer fair; Culture Club, an interactive workshop exploring DIY culture; Art Gallery Shows; Happy Hours and much more.

This past weekend the Treasure Island Music Festival proved once again why it is one of the best music festivals around. A well-chosen selection of diverse bands, a mostly abandoned island in the middle of the Bay, and everything organized in a way that you never have to miss an act (unless you want to eat or ride the ferris wheel of course). It can be a pretty surreal experience.
On Saturday, Danny Brown put everybody in a Kush Coma, and then Poolside chilled everyone out. Disclosure got the whole island dancing in the daytime and Major Lazer waved some flags (what does Diplo even do?). After nightfall, Holy Ghost! kept their sunglasses on and Little Dragon won some hearts. Thom Yorke, Flea, and Atoms For Peace closed out the night with a visibly cold but intense set of material from AMOK and The Eraser. The fog whipping through the band added some unplanned dramatics to the performance.
Sunday started out a little subdued, possible due to a collective hangover from the night before. Early on Haim brought the cute, STRFKR brought the sumos, and James Blake brought down the sun with his gorgeous voice. Japandroids tried to warm everyone up as the night got cold, and then Animal Collective blew our minds and we didn’t care what the temperature was. Sleigh Bells were replaced last minute by AC/DC, or at least that what it sounded like while waiting for Beck, who completely killed it. He moonwalked, did a very sexy version of “Debra,” and closed with “Where It’s At,” reminding us how much we love him and Treasure Island. See you next year!
