“Probably.” She shrugged only. Her parents were much more social, they already made bunch of friends, hell they were even invited to few gatherings but Charlie always skipped. Not that she hated the place, she just didn’t see the point of being attached to it, she was going to leave eventually. Hopefully soon. So she thought, why bother? “Thank you for this lovely welcome even though it’s a year late but you know they say, better late than never.” She shrugged. Honestly, Charlie wasn’t a stranger to Southern Kindness but living in a small town was something else, sometimes it felt suffocating, obviously she kept her distance. The transparency of the guy was impressive, she had to give him that, he just went ahead and told everything without a hesitation. “Well, that’s a relief. I have had few people come to me and said they are praying for me.” Just like Sister Susan did back in high school. It finally hit Charlie, she certainly has seen this guy before, the hair color should’ve alarmed her. “I think I’ve seen your band on stage. The lyrics didn’t speak to me, so I left but yeah, I remember now.” She nodded. “I moved here from Los Angeles, before that I was in Savannah for college but I am originally from New Orleans.” Still a Southern girl, not just the type people have seen around often.
Tumblr media
He let out a chuckle, “Well, you’ve got a point there. Better late than never.” Nixon agreed, adding, “Though, if we had met earlier, I would have given you the welcome wagon then.” He pointed out with a grin. He bit the inside of his lip at the mention of praying for her. Now didn’t seem like the right time to mention that he prayed for everyone in the town. Not for anything specific, just for their general wellbeing. But he kept it to himself and simply nodded. “Don’t worry, I don’t impose my religion onto anyone who doesn’t want to talk about it. I’m only preachy at church to people who want to hear it.” He insisted with a laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. When she said she knew of his band, he cocked an eyebrow, about to thank her for coming to their show but stopping when she said she left it early. “Oh.” He let out silently, looking down at his shoes. “Sorry to hear you didn’t like the music. We play a lot of Christian rock music, but a lot of normal rock, too. Not everyone’s cup to tea, I guess.” He said softly, sadness laced through his voice. He finally looked back up at her with a weak smile, “Well, welcome to Frostford. It might take you a bit to get used to it, but it’s a nice place to live.”

It took her a minute to fully wake up still. Nodding her head and mumbling and barely discernible, “Yeah.” And a shrug. “Everywhere I go s’walkin’ distance anyway.” Finally, she opened one eye and then the other. “You ever feel like you work too much?” The words were about to be a little more intense before she realized who she was talking to. Last thing she needed was to be lectured by the pastor.
Tumblr media
He nodded, chuckling softly. “Perks of a small town, I guess. Falling asleep walking would be quite the sight, though. Maybe it’s good you had a bit of a power nap here in the cafe.” He joked lightheartedly with a grin. He pursed his lips, followed by the click of his tongue. “I sure do. Ever since taking over my father’s duties at the church, I hardly have any time to do things other than work. You’re also workin’ hard, I assume?”

taking a long sip, jo shrugged at his question, leaning back more comfortably in her seat. “ real boring, honestly. the pizza fiasco was the most significant event to happen to me in the past twenty-four hours, ” she said, with the air of someone admitting something disappointing. “ you wanna split some onion rings ? ” she added, unprompted, a hint of excitement returning to her voice, brows quirked upward expectantly. “ oh, you gettin’ in on the alumni football game ? ” she inquired, then, “ or are they gonna confuse you for a student ? ”
Tumblr media
He let out a laugh, shrugging. “Then maybe you shouldn’t be so mad at the pizza guy, he made your day exciting if nothing else. And he didn’t take you away from an actual emergency, so no harm, no foul.” He pointed out, for at least something exciting happened to her. At her mention of more food, he nodded. “You know I do. The onion rings here are legendary.” He could eat anything on the menu, but a burger and onion rings were some of his favourites. “Yeah, I am. I signed up already. Confuse me for a student or not, I’m the best Quarterback this town has ever seen. They won’t win without me on the team.” He bragged with another chuckle.

kanevsky‌:
“ i’m never dirty !! i dunno what you’re talking about , “ he feigned offence to the comment , but nothing the other male could’ve said would’ve really injured his feelings – they threw comments back and forth , verbal tennis , and a shared sense of humour was probably why their friendship had lasted so long . fletcher took the crisp note and gazed at it for a second ; with anyone else he would’ve refused , shoved the money back in a crumpled heap , but with a slow nod he turned back to the display and hummed at the various selection of biscuits and cookies to choose from . the pressure to make the right decision was a tough one , but eventually he picked some out — double choc chip , and one that looked like a mismatch of toppings had just been piled on the top . he figured they could cut each in half and give their opinions like they were on some top-billed cooking show .
wobbling with the tray of treats he lowered their order onto the surface of the table and shimmied into his own seat across from nixon . the back of his hand swept strands of hair back , puffing an exhausted breath , shoving a bite of the cookie past his lips and speaking with his mouth completely full – manners were completely lost on him . “ mm , yeah . amazin’ . i mean – “ he rolled his eyes , “ bumped into syd the other day . i dunno , it was weird .. “ not many people knew about fletcher’s love life , or lack of , but his best friend knew everything there was to know , every dirty detail about the boy’s life whether he wanted to or not , “ one day i’ll find someone to settle down with , but maybe not yet . “
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nixon couldn’t resist a playful eye roll, shooting Fletcher a teasing glance. While the pair couldn’t be more different, they got along swimmingly. Maybe their differences were why they got along so well, something about opposites attracting, but whatever the case, Nixon was thankful for Fletcher. Fletch was different than most of the home-grown sports guys he was used to hanging out with, and a breath of fresh air. He was a good friend, fiercely loyal, and earnest to a fault. He was a good guy at his core, and Nixon could see through all the bullshit and bad decisions that he had a heart of gold.
As he returned with their food, he brought his large mug of coffee to his lips and sat the cup down, in turn reaching for one of the cookies he had brought. “I love cookies.” He mused with a chuckle, taking a large bite before placing it back on the plate. At the mention of Sydney, he raised his brows, cocking his head to the side. “Oh?” Was all he said, quietly, as he listened to him continue. “I don’t doubt that it was weird...” He shook his head, another laugh rolling off his tongue. “I’m sure you will find someone to settle down with. Who could resist that dorky grin, tree man?” Nixon teased before adding, his tone serious, “What did she say? What did you two... talk about? I need details here, man.”

━ did y'all see [Nixon ‘Nick’ Keller] walkin’ into [The Cuttery or Church?] they’ve lived in frostford for [22 years] and you can catch ‘em around town working as an [the town preacher/pastor & church worship band lead singer]. I reckon they’re pretty [outgoing & compassionate] but I hear they can also be kinda [lofty & closed off] if ya see ‘em around, be sure to say hi. ━  [TW: death, car accident, heart attack, faith, religion]
Hey! My name is Alex, and I’m thrilled to be here writing with you all. I’m still figuring out the footing for Nixon and where he sits in Frostford, but here are some of the basics I’ve sorted out. I’ll be adding more as I think of them. Also, he’s a lot more like Archie Andrews from Riverdale than I intended him to be... so let’s just disregard that, yeah? Perfect, haha.
GENERAL:
Nixon Keller was born August 12th to Joan and Nicholas Keller at the local hospital in Frostford.
He was born into a very religious family, and the Bible and its teachings were instilled in him from a young age as his father was the preacher in town. His mom is a part-time teacher, part-time homemaker.
Being the eldest son of the couple, he was given a lot of responsibility at a young age. He was the built in baby sitter for his younger sister and helped out at church or the various events it would hold for as long as he can remember.
Believing in God was never a choice for him, it was something he was raised to do. Though, he didn’t find himself questioning it too much and thought most of what the Bible taught aligned with his own beliefs. More on that later.
He’s very musical, and was plunking out notes on his families grand piano ever since he could reach the keys. He loves to sing, and has quite a great voice. He also actively still plays piano, though he prefers guitar. His family luckily could afford music lessons and he picked up the notes quickly. He practiced religiously (pun intended) every day before and after school. He also writes songs.
He grew up singing in the church choir and playing in their worship band, eventually leading the band as lead singer and guitarist.
He is also a star football player and was the starting quarterback every year he played football, and was the captain of the football team. Or co-captains with Lucas, depending on the year.
His family is the epitome of ‘All American’. From a large, lavish house on a large acreage and apple orchard, his mom spent her days baking or tending to the garden. They had a few horses, chickens, but no pigs; because his mom didn’t like the mess they made.
He pulled his weight at home, too, often fixing things around the house, cutting the grass, picking apples, tending to the horses, etc.
He spends his life following in his father’s footsteps, and played football mostly to please him--though he grew to like it... but only enough to keep from quitting--and was naturally athletic due to being so strong from the physical labour at home. He was the star quarter back, class Valedictorian, and the resident Golden Boy. He’s also not easily missed due to his bright red hair and towering height.
He was offered a few full ride scholarships for football at varying colleges but turned them all down to marry Alexis and stay in Frostford.
As similar as he was to his father--outgoing, evangelical, empathetic, strong--the two butted heads constantly due to Nixon’s progressive thinking. He’s very inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community, etc. He believes that at its core, the bible is about love, and Jesus loved everyone. No exceptions.
His father is a bit more old-school, and while isn’t outwardly homophobic... is a bit problematic in his thinking and Nixon does his best to help encourage change in that area.
His mom is more like Nixon, tender, loving, and sweet. She also believes that the bible only preaches love and has often welcomed sick animals or wandering souls into the families guest house when they needed some TLC.
The relationship with his father grew more strained as his dad wanted Nixon to take over his rank at the church, whereas Nixon wanted to move out of town eventually to pursue a music and football career and live on his own terms. It was a point of contention and they were often yelling at each other about it, ruining more than one family dinner with their arguments.
Nixon was hoping his father would come around when tragedy struck. While driving home from a meeting at the church, his father suffered a ‘widow maker’ heart attack and his car flipped into a ditch. He died on scene and Nixon is still coming to terms and dealing with the loss.
Because it was his father’s wish for Nixon to take over as the pastor, Nixon rose to the challenge after his father’s passing, putting his music and football career on hold.
He’s loving, compassionate, but also conceited, cocky, and often puts himself as a pedestal because of the privileged life he has led. Though, at his core, he’s a good person who would give you the shirt off his back.
He’s hoping his new role at the church will invite marginalized members of the community to come to Sunday service because when you’re at Nixon’s church, you’re family, and everyone is welcome.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Being a classic southern, religious boy, Nixon was taught all about abstinence and to be wary about women. His father and mother were High School sweethearts and they prayed that Nixon would be just as lucky to find someone so soon.
His parents prayers were answered in the form of Alexis, one of Nixon’s childhood and family friends from when he was younger. His family met hers when they were nine years old and as each family shared a strong faith, they became close family friends, spending every Sunday together after church. They also went on numerous fishing and camping trips together.
Nixon always had a soft spot for Alexis but never thought she’d feel the same way about him, so he kept it to himself. That is, until he heard a fellow football player talk about asking Alexis on a date. He knew deep down that it was now or never and that being rejected wouldn’t hurt as bad as never trying.
So one day after school in Sophomore year, he went over to her house with a bouquet of her favour flavours and asked her on a date, confessing his long bottled up feelings on her front porch. They have been together ever since.
His parents are thrilled that they ended up together, as they both share a strong faith, and love of the town.
Nixon was the school’s star Quarterback and football captain, and Alexis was the head cheerleader, so they were a match made in heaven for many reasons.
Nixon proposed to her on her 18th birthday and they were married shortly after.
He’s been by her side through everything in life and she is his best friend and the love of his life. He never believed in soulmates until he met Alexis, but he’s thankful to have an incredible love story with her.
Alexis is the only woman Nixon has ever dated or been with.
He’s thrilled to be a father but he’s also scared shitless.
FRIENDSHIPS:
Fletcher and Lucas are Nixon’s best friends. While the two boys couldn’t be more different from each other, they both balance Nixon out well.
Lucas and Nixon met the first year Nixon played high school football and got along swimmingly well. They’re very similar people and we co-captains of the football team until Lucas graduated and Nixon took over for his last year of high school.
Nixon stood by Lucas’ side through everything he went through with his varying girlfriends, injuries, and college football. And while he supports and loves him through and through, there is an aspect of jealousy that Nixon never got to go play college football because he settled in Frostford.
Fletcher is more reserved than Nixon, but he prides himself on being able to get Fletch out of his comfort zone and brought him along to any party or social event he was going to in High School. He knows Fletcher has a heart of gold and the two have a very special bond. (It’s just really pure ok)
I’ll be adding more to this as I think of them, but these are the basics for now! As always, hit me up for connections and plots. :)

“You are too sweet for saying that but I can only imagine what anyone else would have said had they seen my like this. I’m supposed to go Splitten Hairs after this, it would have been quite the scandal.” Although Hannah was sure that the talk would have nothing to do with a fussy toddler who wasn’t feeling well.  “Yeah, before you know it you’ll be a pro late night feedings and tantrums in the middle of Bushel,” Hannah mused with a warm smile. “Yeah, he’s got the whole crew of them. Hopefully Tuck will finally get some rest for him but I get a little me peace and quite.” She enjoyed these little moments but she loved her kids so much she would trade a single dirty diaper or late night for anything. “I would love to, it will be nice to catch up. You can fill me on how you’re doing getting ready to be a new daddy.”
Tumblr media
He let out a soft laugh, nodding. “Well, you’re lucky you ran into me, then. I know the ladies down at Splitten Hairs can be quite the gossips.” He cooed in agreement. He nodded, adding. “Let’s hope so. I’m sure it’ll take a while to fall into a routine with all of that stuff once the little one arrives, but Lexi and I make a good team, so I’m sure we’ll be fine in no time.” He agreed, excited just talking about his future as a father. He was hoping he could be half the loving father and husband his dad was, and felt a twinge of sadness at the thought of him never meeting his future grandchild. “You definitely deserve a little you time.” He smiled when she accepted his offer, sitting down at a nearby table. “I’m reading every baby book I could find at the library and watching YouTube tutorials about everything under the sun, but I still don’t feel very prepared. How was it when your little ones were born? Did you learn it all as you went along?”

Triple shifts were a cruel and unusual punishment, but needing money was even worse. Dani hadn’t slept in a day after her double and in spite of getting to be home for a few hours, she barely got enough sleep before having to head back out for her third, stopping at the cafe with her tips for a much needed java kick in the pants before heading out.
Hot, black, bitter, Dani blew into the paper cup as her eyes fluttered, begging for sleep, the steam blowing back up into her face and the scent making her excited. Just as she was about to take a sip, she was interrupted, looking up with a frustrated expression to see Nixon.  His gaze had always felt judgmental to her mother, who would always swear that his family was judging her for her lifestyle choices and the fact that they never went to church, but Dani never held any malice towards him or his family.  “What–?” She said after a beat, the words registering in her tired mind as she brushed her hair aside and looked over her shoulder to see the tag. “ Oh shit….” She grumbled as she set her coffee down, then paused and looked back up at Nixon.  “Sorry…”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He bit the inside of his lip, immediately feeling bad for startling her. He was thankful her coffee hadn’t spilled on him--or worse--her. He could tell she wasn’t overly thrilled to see him, but he was just trying to be helpful. He slid a hand into his pocket, clearing his throat and offering her a small smile as he nodded. “Yeah, it’s just.... the tag. Sorry to have bothered ya.” He apologized softly, shaking his head. “No problem.” He insisted, glancing around the bustling cafe as its many patrons filled their coffee with cream and sugar before heading out on their day in Frostford.
While Frostford’s church was quite busy on any given Sunday, not everyone in the town was Christian. And while his father was more judgemental during his time as the town’s pastor, Nixon understood that it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. He respected that everyone had their own beliefs and values and would never belittle or judge someone for it. He was a person before a pastor and saw everyone as people, and friends, before members of the congregation. He saved his preaching for those on Sunday who wanted to hear it and often tried to talk about other things on his days off. Besides, the church hadn’t always been the most welcoming place to different walks of life, but Nixon was doing his best to change that. “How are you doing? Anything exciting going on in the life of Dani?”

“So, are you gonna play the alumni game this weekend?” Alexis asked, so excited she was basically jumping off the balls of her feet. “I think it’ll be good. Colton’s gettin’ on in age, he’ll need some support if the Falcons are gonna kick some Bull butt.”

Glancing over to her as she entered their garage, he set down the wrench and wiped his hands off on the old t-shirt he was wearing. “You know it!” He beamed, a wide smile plastered on his face. “Already signed up.” He explained, pulling the now blackened with oil shirt over his head and tossing it over the side of his truck that he was working on, not wanting to get any dirt on her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, grinning down at her, “With me on the team, you know we’re gonna kick ass. I’ve got quarterback in my blood, and it’ll be good to play again. I miss it.” Part of him wondered what their life would be if he had accepted one of the football scholarships he was offered for college, but their life was here now, in Frostford.

Daniel looked at Nixon with sympathy as he listed off all his responsibilities. “That’s a lot.” It must be so hard to have so much on your plate at such a young age. Daniel didn’t know Nixon’s exact age, he had never asked, but he looked so young. How did he do it? Daniel thought back to his early twenties, when his only responsibility had been school, and he hadn’t even managed that. He brushed off the thought before he compared their experiences further. Some people had their shit together more than others, and that was fine.
“Good thing we figured out caffeine, otherwise we’d never make it through the day.” Daniel hesitated to accept the offer. He never felt deserving of people’s generosity, but it was always easier to swallow his feeling and just say yes and thank you. “Really? I was getting a cream puff, but– are you sure?”
Tumblr media
He shrugged, chuckling softly. “It is, but it’s worth it. Sleep is for the weak, or so they say. I keep hoping that once the baby is born things will slow down, but from what I’ve heard, the opposite is true. Until then, the coffee is what keeps me energized.” He joked. As hard as it was sometime to balance everything on his ever growing plate, he wouldn’t change it for the world. He was happy, working a job he loved and busy preparing for a child with the woman he adored.
Nixon nodded quickly, agreeing, “You got that right. Coffee is one of the biggest blessings in my life right now. I never used to be a big caffeine drinker, but now I can’t make it through the day without a few cups.” He nodded again, pulling out his wallet to pay for Daniel’s order. “I insist, man. It’s my pleasure.” The younger man promised, offering his credit card over to the cashier for them to swipe. “Cream puff, good choice. All the baking here is great. Wanna grab a seat and catch up a bit?”

“Thank you.” She was about to make her way to the bathroom, but she didn’t want to leave her laptop on the table, she quickly grabbed it and placed it on the guy’s table. “Can you keep an eye for it for a second?” Gesturing her precious MacBook, she smiled and quickly went to the bathroom to change. It took less than a minute for Charlie, she didn’t waste any time. “Thanks again.” Initially she reached for her laptop but once the guy extended his hand out, she gently shook it. The name certainly did ring a bell, his name was familiar but she couldn’t put two and two together right away. “Nice to meet you Nixon. I am Charlie.” She introduced herself as well. “Not really. It has been a year already. I don’t go out a lot though, that’s probably why.”
Tumblr media
Nixon nodded, sliding his hands into his pockets. “Of course. Would be happy to.” Though, the town crime rate was low, it only took one person to take someone’s expensive computer and he understood that she wouldn’t want to risk it. As she returned, he smiled warmly to her. “My pleasure.” The man insisted, “Great to meet you.” He clicked his tongue. “That makes sense. Still, I’m the town’s unofficial welcome wagon, so you must have slipped under my radar. Welcome to Frostford.” He chuckled. The welcome was sincere albeit a bit late. “I’ve lived here all my life and now I’m married and work down at the local church, I’m the preacher there.” He explained, “Not the judgemental kind, though, I keep my preaching to myself until Sunday service.” He added, knowing the title could be misinterpreted. But Nixon wasn’t that sort of Christian; he loved everyone. “I also play in a band here and lead the music worship at the church, too. Where did you move from?”

“what?” dinah replied, glancing down at her blouse while running her fingers over the seams that were clearly visible on the outside. “oh my lord, this is so embarrassin’,” she replied sheepishly. “i mean oh my goodness, not lord. i ain’t one to take the lord’s name in vain,” she nodded. “you reckon anyone else noticed it or do i have time to run to the little girl’s room and fix it?”
Tumblr media
He raised a hand, shaking it in an effort to stop her from being embarrassed. “It’s no trouble. You’re just lucky I’ve got your back.” He teased, chuckling a bit as she swore. “It’s okay, not like you’re talking to the town pastor or anything...” He teased with a playful grin. “I don’t think anyone did, most people are too caught up in their own world this early in the mornin’. Go ahead and run to the restroom, I’ll save your place in line.” Nixon offered.

Daniel made a beeline to the counter as soon as he walked through the cafe’s door. He was starving and exhausted after another accidental all-nighter, and had his mind set on a freshly baked cream puff. Someone cleared their throat behind him, catching his attention before he could place his order. Daniel looked over his shoulder and was both surprised and confused to see Nixon outside of the church. Logically he knew Nixon did other things with his time, but the association of man to church was so strong that seeing him out of that setting was a little jarring.
“What?” Confusion creased his brow as he looked down at his shirt. “No, it’s not? It’s– oh.” His fingers touched the seam, just then realizing that it was on the outside. Unbelieving, he patted the back of his neck, an embarrassed laugh escaping him when he felt the tag also on the outside. “I guess I’m still asleep, I didn’t even notice.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nixon bit the inside of his lip, hoping his shirt was in fact inside out and that he wasn’t just seeing things or mistaken. Given how little sleep he got the night before, it wasn’t outside the realm of possibilities. He had been working odd jobs around the community to make extra money before the baby arrived and his focus would shift to focus on their family, so he had been burning the candle at both ends. It was very possible that it had caught up to him, hence why he needed a coffee--or three--before getting his day started.
He let out a soft chuckle, smiling over to him. “Hey, bud, no worries. You and me both. Between work, getting prepped for this Sunday’s service, and the never ending list of chores my adoring--and pregnant--wife needs me to do, I’ve hardly been sleeping recently.” He could sympathize with Daniel, life had been moving fast lately. “Not that I mind, though. And the coffee helps with that, too.” He added, not wanting to trade his life for the world. “What’re ya havin’? On me.”

Hannah probably wasn’t in her right mind right now. Tommy had come down with a cold and hadn’t been sleeping properly the last few nights and Hannah was learning that doing the parenting thing on her own was a lot harder than she’d ever imagined. Tanner had come to pick up the kids and Hannah knew the only way she was going to survive the day was a lot of coffee so she headed to the cafe. She probably looked like a complete mess, her hair was pulled up in a messy bun on top of her head and she had barely pulled herself together. Nothing a little coffee wouldn’t fix right? Then she looked up to see Nixon and Hannah looked confused for a moment before looking completely horrified. “Oh my goodness,” She drawled looked mortified and she couldn’t do any but laugh. “I am so embarrassed right now, “ Hannah said rubbing her hands over her face. “Little Tommy has been sick the last few nights and hasn’t been sleeping so I’m an absolute mess but I guess that’s pretty apparent.” She said shaking her head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seeing a friendly face brought a smile to the corners of his lips and he let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head, insisting, “You don’t have to be embarrassed. It could be worse, at least it’s not that your fly is down.” He pointed out, grin growing a bit wider. “I’m sorry the little man has been sick. Guess that’s my future soon enough. You’re not a mess, though, don’t get it twisted.” He hummed, offering her the seat across from him before sitting back down and adding, “I’m assumin’ Tanner has him now? So you get a bit of time to yourself? Join me for a coffee, it’s been so long since I’ve seen ya.”

a few dollars would do him nicely , he thought , as dirtied hands pressed against the handle of the door that chimed to signal his arrival . scruffed-up boots carried him to the counter , leaning over with his elbows on the glass display that held all manor of cupcakes , breads and bakes , he ordered his usual – black coffee , two sugars -– and counted the coins before sliding them over . it was rare for his own weekends to be free . being the only guy in town that could successfully install a radiator meant his calendar was often stacked full , especially now the autumn months were rolling in faster than he could catch up with .
Tumblr media
the clearing of a throat behind the boy startled him , but once one headphone was plucked from his ear and he focused on the male his expression brightened – nixon , out of everyone !! “ how’d you not know it was me ?? “ he hissed , twirling and tugging the man into a hug ( a manly one , of course , careful not to dirty the male’s clothes ) . “ can i come sit with you ?? i’d get you something , but i don’t think i have enough .. maybe something small , one of those cookies you get on the side of a fancy coffee y’know … or a , i dunno..  “ the excitement was causing him to grow flustered , raking fingers through already messy hair to make the tendrils stick up in an even crazier fashion . attention turned back to the worker as he swiped up his coffee . “ спасибо – i mean , thanks . “
Tumblr media
As he turned around to face him, Nixon immediately recognized his best friend standing in front of him. “You’re dirtier than usual. Must have been an intense job this mornin’.” He explained with a chuckle, happily returning his hug and giving him a friendly squeeze, not caring if the man’s filth rubbed onto his flannel. “Of course, man.” Upon his offer, Nixon shook his head, pulling out his wallet and offering him a ten dollar bill. “That’s very sweet ‘o ya, bud, but let me treat you this time. Least I could do for you helping fix the plumbin’ at my ma’s place.” He hummed, insisting he take the cash to buy them each something sweet to bite on.
“Go grab us some cookies, I’ll grab a bigger table.” He handed off the money, pivoting on his heels and grabbing his things quickly before getting a bigger table for them. He slid into the chair, tucked his notebook away in his shoulder bag and set it aside as he joined him. “How’ve you been, buddy? It’s been too long since we’ve gotten a chance to catch up.”

The trip hadn’t been her idea, hell– she’d only agreed to it because the place was two blocks away from the shop and because her dad wouldn’t have made the walk himself. He’d asked her for coffee and she’d admit she needed it herself, half asleep as she ambled over and ordered her and her dad’s, taking hers to a stool and realizing she’d need to drink at least half of it before heading back.
Her eyes were closed, no attempt at stopping herself from sitting there and falling asleep when someone spoke to her, though Remy only replied with a–’Hmm?” before she opened just one eye, barely, and gave him a glance. “I did that on purpose,” she said with a shrug, not looking down to se if it was actually her he was speaking to. “M’tired, can ya blame me?”

He hadn’t meant to wake her. He wasn’t even sure if she was sleeping or just resting her eyes. He blushed slightly as her eyes opened, feeling bad to disturb her. Rubbing the back of his neck, he chuckled softly, albeit awkwardly. “Silly me.” He mused after a moment. “Don’t blame you at all. I’ve been there. Thankfully you’re not driving, though, falling asleep at the wheel is much worse than in a coffee shop.” He pointed out to her, “Long night?”
