To my friends on the spectrum, let me explain to you an unspoken social rule that possibly nobody has ever explained to you before

If a neurotypical asks you, “What game are you playing?” they’re not asking you to describe the game.

They’re asking you if they can play too.

If a neurotypical asks you, “What are you watching?” they’re not asking you to explain the plot of the movie/tv show to them.

They’re asking if they can watch it with you.

When neurotypicals ask you “What are you doing?” 

What you think they’re asking: “Please explain to me what you are doing.” 

What they’re actually asking:  “Can I join you?”

Now here’s the really fucked up part. If you start explaining to them what you’re doing? They will interpret that as a rejection. 

What you think you’re saying: [the answer to their question]

What they think you’re saying: This is an elite and exclusive activity for a level 5 friend and you are a level 1 acquaintance. You are not qualified to join me because you don’t know all this stuff. Go away.

This is why neurotypicals think you’re being cold and antisocial.

For our entire lives the world has been for extroverts.

The big work parties, school presentations, huge sporting events, stores that don’t deliver, sit down restaurants...all of these things are the way that they are because the world is extroverted. We’re expected to be social.

And that’s fine, because it’s healthy to be social.

So us introverts, we just deal.

We go. And we do. Just like you. But it’s not easy for us. It actually really sucks for a lot of us.

Now for once the extroverts are being pushed out of their comfort zone to stay healthy.

So, I just want to say I acknowledge how hard this is for you guys. This isn’t your life, this isn’t what you enjoy. It’s very hard for you to feel normal right now.

I know you feel like you want to crawl out of your skin. You just want to leave by any means. You want to do ANYTHING that isn’t this. I get it.

So on behalf of introverts everywhere we’d just like to say:

I just wanted to say thank you all for the kind messages I received on my birthday. It really made this year’s all the more special.

I know I recently shared that I had gone on a trip over break but coming back home to find all these changes in the community, country & college semester has been a bit overwhelming.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a wonderful time & made new memories in Mexico with family and everyone was very patient & treated me kindly!

But to rush home having to worry if I’d be allowed back in, people panic buying, the spreading closure of a lot of services/stores in surrounding areas and all the incoming emails of professors trying to convert their classes into an online & accessible format is a lot to take in.

I won’t repeat what’s already public knowledge from the news or go into more details of how I feel like I need to crack as many glowsticks as I can get my hands on IMMEDIATELY

but I just wanted to express that the days since coming home have been very stressful for me & you taking the time to type a message on my birthday means the world to me. So thank you
