“Bleeding glaciers”. photos by Hannes Becker
We all know that we do damage our planet, but we didn’t realize we would actually making it bleed. Well ok, blood isn’t really leaking out of this glacier, but it’s a critical warning though.. the red color are sediments which were frozen into the ice and carved down from the mountain on the left. Once the glacier fronts are calving and melting, the sediments are mixing with the ocean water - Creating these surreal and dramatic looking sceneries. Glaciers used to be reflecting most of the sunlight, keeping the planet cool. Sadly though, in the past 100 years the ice has been receded A LOT.
The Kronebreen glacier on the picture above, lost about 3km of ice in the last 15 years. The surface of the rocks and mountains are loosing its ice cover and protection, being exposed to the sun and absorbing most of the heat is causing an even faster melting process. In the end it will effect the increase of global temperatures and a rise of the water levels. A frightening feedback loop almost impossible to stop.
