Magicians Fanworks Event, Jan. 27-Mar. 9

Welcome Home!

We’re welcoming fanworks of all types, both new works and continuations of existing WIPs, for a challenge event celebrating The Magicians (Lev Grossman/SyFy). This low-key challenge focuses on a relaxed series of weekly entries, with the hope that all will have more time to participate and enjoy the new works. We’ll reblog here on Tumblr and open the AO3 collection from Jan. 27-Mar. 9.

The overall theme for the entire event is Welcome Home! Interpret as you please—home could be a person, place, or more; “welcome home” could be meant sincerely or sarcastically. It also includes “welcome back to this WIP” even if your WIP doesn’t meet any other theme (note: WIP continuations automatically qualify; new works must at least fit the overall event theme).

We’ve created weekly prompts, in addition to the overall event theme. We also have a final “Free Space” week.

If you would like to create something for the general “Welcome Home!” theme, these are welcome anytime while the event is open, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9!

If you would like to use the weekly themes: We hope the weekly theme setup helps inspire new works and revive temporarily stalled WIPs. Each week, we encourage works for that theme anytime during the week (Monday-Sunday). If you miss your week, you’ve got a second chance during Week 6, our Free Space/Catch-Up week!

Want to continue an existing WIP but it doesn’t match any of our themes? Send it during Week 6!

All types of fanworks are welcome! Fic, art, edits, vids, cosplay, crafts, moodboards, pinboards, songs, fanmixes, podfic—you make it, we’ll enjoy it! You’re welcome to add as many different works as you want while the event is open, Jan. 27-Mar. 9!

WEEK 1: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, HOME as a theme—Whatever the creator and/or characters think about "home," good or bad; could be about a new home, or returning to an old one.

WEEK 2: Feb. 3-9, "It's been a long time"—It could be a long time since characters saw each other, or a long time engaged on a task like the mosaic (or a long time since the author posted to this WIP—maybe one of your oldest). Special note: The 7th anniversary of The Magicians 3x05, “A Life in the Day,” falls this week, on Feb. 7. So feel free to send Mosaic Fic during this week.

WEEK 3: Feb. 10-16, Seasonal/holiday—Whether or not it’s the current season/holiday right now (any are welcome). Special note: By sheer happy coincidence, Valentine’s Day is this week.

WEEK 4: Feb. 17-23, Magical creature—A being from the show or books, or from mythology/folklore, or one you make up.

WEEK 5: Feb. 24-Mar. 2, Returning after absence (or returning to being themselves).

WEEK 6: Mar. 3-9, Free space/catch-up week! If you were working on a theme for any prior week but needed more time, now’s your chance! Or, if you are continuing an existing WIP that doesn’t match any of our themes, please share it now.

Remember—any works for the general “Welcome Home” theme may be sent any time the event is open, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9.

The last day for challenge entries on Tumblr and/or AO3 will be March 9.

Quentin Coldwater has been dead for seven months and fourteen hours when Eliot stumbles on him on a magical errand.

Eliot Waugh has been dead for thirteen years, seven months and seventeen hours when he passes the door of Quentin Coldwater’s hedge coven.

None of this makes sense but both of these realities are true. And what should they expect really, after fortyish freaking timelines?

Or

Quentin minor-mended his way out of the Mirror World and forgot all about his past life except for Eliot and the Mosaic. It’s time for them to bring all of the pieces of the puzzles together.

I was so lucky to get to beta this gorgeous fic by @tegulaesunrise!! The writing is beautiful, the story is very moving, and I really love these characters. I'm so excited for everyone to read it!! Here's the first chapter, and the rest is going up soon.

Stuff like this is why I love fanfic in general.

I love everyone who's written post-S4 fic where Alice & Eliot commiserate over the discomfort of being returned to physical bodies, you're all geniuses. I also find it so interesting because the way Alice talks about being de-niffined makes it clear she has *never* liked having a physical body, but meanwhile Eliot did, and the frustration of having a body that doesn't work the way it ought to when you loved the way it worked is still very different from feeling re-confined after feeling free. Which is part of what makes it a rich well for fic - finding common ground & mutual understanding through a shared experience they nevertheless feel very different about!

I'm choosing to interpret WIP in the most literal sense--something that's made it past the idea stage into actual narrative or art. Thus I won't, sadly, be posting my entire life...thank f***.

First off...

Secret Queliot Collaboration, a novel I'm writing in a collaboration with my favorite Queliot artist, which hasn't started posting yet. So for that one...due to the Collaboration of it all...if you ask me about it, I'll tag you when I make the first post so you can see what it is! And...I'll consider posting a tiny snip that I hope will intrigue but keep you guessing!

The following is going to be art and fic, but right now what I have is a basic sketch that only hints at what it might become:

Happy Wednesday, friends. Who wants another tiny teaser from chapter 4 of until i come back from the dead for you? The scene this snippet is from is possibly my fav in the whole chapter and I can't wait to share the whole thing lol. I'm still not sure when that's going to be but I'm working on the second to last scene at the moment so hopefully I'm won't be tooooo much longer. Anyway, this is slightly spoilery but I hope you all find it just as delightful as I do. 😘 ***** “Julia,” Eliot hears someone saying beyond the deep black void that has become his brain. It takes him a long moment for him to realize it’s his voice speaking, his hand holding the phone. “Just give me two minutes before you threaten to put your Popper number four up my ass, okay? Just—”

“Fuck.” Her voice is shaking so badly Eliot feels it clawing through the receiver like a living thing. “You.”

Eliot draws a breath, free hand shaking and useless where it rests against his thigh. Fuck, he needs a smoke. “If you really thought Quentin calling you was a prank you would have blocked my number.”

There’s a silence on the other end of the line for a long moment after Eliot speaks. The sound of his own voice sloshing around like water in his skull. And all he can do is sit there buzzing and wishing he had something to start a fire with so he could toss the phone inside and watch it burn, burn.

“You have sixty seconds,” Julia says at last, voice tense and quivering and terrible. Edged in just enough sadness that Eliot knows she’s trying not to cry.

Geez, I wish the writing had been more RTD- like for 13. Jodie is such a fabulous actress. Look at that! She's getting across the same devastation as the others while smiling. Her doctor could have been amazing.

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Who wants a lil preview of the Queliot xmas fic I decided last minute absolutely had to be written and posted by the 25th? Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'm also working on chapter 4 of until i come back from the dead for you alongside this and I'm so busy with so many real life things lol...

Margo hummed, fully crawling into Eliot’s lap and resting her head on his shoulder. Warm as sunlight in summer where her body pressed against him. “True as that might be,” she said, plucking the joint from Eliot’s fingers, smoke curling from the end of it when she took a hit. “We’ve been planning this party since July and you’ve been acting pathetic since September and I want you to stop moping like a virgin and tell me his name.”

Eliot let his mouth curl up in a grin. Gazing down at Margo as he glared at him and smoked. “Daddy doesn’t mope, Margo. I’m simply—”

“Moping like a seven-foot loser who’s never gotten his dick wet before.”

Eliot swiped the joint from Margo and took a long, slow hit. Gaze lingering on the Christmas tree the two of them had erected and decorated together a couple nights before. Gorgeous, towering evergreen flocked with magic snow. Their color theme was champagne and ivory and they’d fucking nailed it. The lighting enchantment they’d used making the whole thing appear to be glowing from within.

“Not moping.” Eliot exhaled a thin white plume of smoke. Eyes wandering from the Christmas tree and locking onto Quentin. God. Those big strong-looking hands of his that flapped like wings as he spoke. “Surveying our kingdom.”

The festive music was a low hum beyond the drumming of blood in Eliot’s ears. He passed Margo the joint, pressed a kiss against the top of her head. And across the room Quentin wasn’t speaking anymore. And his gaze lifted slowly from Alice, and his eyes swept over the room like he was searching for someone else. And for a single fleeting flash of a second his eyes locked firmly with Eliot’s. And—

Fuck.

Eliot averted his gaze, did his best to keep it casual. Little stutter of his heart, little hitch in his breathing. Running a soft hand over Margo’s soft head as she passed him the joint and said, “Yeah, well, my survey says you’re totally full of shit.”

Not my best work, but! My longest! My first time posting something over 8k words lol :) It's a mashed together thing I started a while ago and then continued with inspiration from the unauthorized magicians rewatch discord

I would really appreciate anyone who feels like commenting on it: gives me motivation to write more and just lights up my day like nothing else!
