WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL PEACHES AND PLUMS BIG BANG EVENT!

What does that mean?  Well, the short answer is a Magician’s Big Bang.  The longer answer is probably best answered in our Rules and FAQ page.  That’s where you’ll find all the details on what a Big Bang means, at least in this context.  Other fandoms and events may have different interpretations, so please, really, check out the FAQ.

There, now that you’ve done that and have some idea what THIS Big Bang is about, in general terms, we can get into the smaller details.

For our opening we’ve decided to run a Reverse Bang.  There are several reasons for that, most of which fall on the modding side of things, but also because it’s a smaller commitment which makes it great for a starter.  What that actually means is that artists will sign up first.  They will submit between one and two new original works.  Each work will go into a list of works for the event, and then writers will sign up and submit a list of which works they would like to write a 10k+ work inspired by.  Artists and writers will then be paired up based on those selections.  Now, Artists, this doesn’t mean that you can’t submit more art for your writer's work, if you so choose, but it isn’t required.  Just the original work, which can be tweaked with the writer's work if so desired, but again, isn’t required.  You could technically be done once your art is submitted to the selection pool.  It is lovely community, though, to be around for your writer to at the very least toss some ideas at, or pick your brain about your artwork.  And just to chat with other creators in general.

Writers, your job, once you’ve been given a partner, is to create a fic inspired by that piece of art.  For a Reverse Bang we’ve lowered the required word count to a 10k minimum, which is a large part of why we decided to start with a Reverse Bang.  Something a little smaller to let everyone get the feel for the event.

We will set up lines of communication between each set of partners for this event, be that email or discord.  So please be prepared to offer up one if not both of those methods of communication for your partner.

Friendly reminder this fandom has a racism problem, The Vampire Chronicles have a racism problem, the industry has a racism problem, Jam Reiderson stans aren't necessarily Jacob fans, call people out on their bullshit or block them, whichever works better for you, but I'd recommend finding your own little bubble of poc/true allies and stick to their company too because you'll probably need it.

It's good to fight racism, but it's also good for you to just talk, enjoy and celebrate people of color and not have the task or educating ignorants for a change. Never let that get in the way of appreciating the wonderful poc in this fandom, fan artists, fic writers and actors of the show. Take breaks to breathe and give them and each other love and recognition.

And white people either educate yourselves, listen before speaking (maybe even shut up for once?!) or fuck yourselves.

fanfic writers are so fucking awesome man. they write novel length fics that are sometimes even better than some published bestselling books written by professional writers. like fanfic writers are professional writers to me and they gift us their masterpieces for free. they give us something we can look forward to after a long day. something from which we can seek comfort when life is hard. something that can be our own little getaway. in a world of capitalism, despite everything, they give us all of these for free. like holy fuck. shout out to every fanfic writer. Guys, queers. Specifically my fellow queers.

I work at a library. We do this thing where, every so often, we weed the collection. It hurts to see books go, but it's necessary to make sure there's room in the library for new materials.

I have seen so much support for the library in text, and I've seen folks pass around those beautiful "queer your library" flyers. Keep doing that. That's great. Nothing wrong with that. But you HAVE to turn your words into action. We MUST remember to actually go to our local organizations and libraries and actually, with our own fucking hands, interact with these materials we want to see more of.

My branch is medium-sized for a library, maybe a little small. We don't have as many materials as I'd like, but we have fundamentals. Tell me why, even with all the verbal support I've gotten from my local community for the library as a resource for our LGBT+ community, every single trans biography and a good chunk of our vaguely queer theory books were on the list. This isn't a scheme to take the books off the shelves, it isn't another bigoted American governmental push. The only thing we look at when we weed is how long it's been since the last time the item was checked out.

Three years.

No one in my community interacted in any meaningful way with the few books on trans life and history we physically had on the shelves for three fucking years.

I promise you the materials you want and need are there, but this isn't a horde. This isn't a static safety net. You have to use them. You MUST use them or, in the future, maybe in three years, they *won't* be there anymore.

This isn't a vague post, there's no one person I'm hinting at or calling out. I'm not even talking directly to anyone who's directly in my line of sight. I just want everyone to hear this. Big library, small library, whatever. Doesn't matter. Please, we cannot be losing our shelf visibility like this.

Warm Up Masterlist and Wrap-Up

We're so thrilled you've all joined us on this journey! From December 1 through our extension day December 8, 2024, twelve creators provided us with forty-three individual entries to Warm Up! This included thirteen artworks and thirty short written works of fic (and/or poetry, in two cases). They're all listed below for you to enjoy anytime.

The challenge focused on micro Magicians fanworks of all types, welcoming both new works and additions to existing WIPs. The “warm up” theme could include vibes that are warm, cozy, related to winter, being hot (in any sense of that word), warming up or preparing for a big event, just starting out in something like magic, and other creative takes. Read more about Warm Up.

Magicians Fanworks Event, Jan. 27-Mar. 9

Welcome Home!

We’re welcoming fanworks of all types, both new works and continuations of existing WIPs, for a challenge event celebrating The Magicians (Lev Grossman/SyFy). This low-key challenge focuses on a relaxed series of weekly entries, with the hope that all will have more time to participate and enjoy the new works. We’ll reblog here on Tumblr and open the AO3 collection from Jan. 27-Mar. 9.

The overall theme for the entire event is Welcome Home! Interpret as you please—home could be a person, place, or more; “welcome home” could be meant sincerely or sarcastically. It also includes “welcome back to this WIP” even if your WIP doesn’t meet any other theme (note: WIP continuations automatically qualify; new works must at least fit the overall event theme).

We’ve created weekly prompts, in addition to the overall event theme. We also have a final “Free Space” week.

If you would like to create something for the general “Welcome Home!” theme, these are welcome anytime while the event is open, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9!

If you would like to use the weekly themes: We hope the weekly theme setup helps inspire new works and revive temporarily stalled WIPs. Each week, we encourage works for that theme anytime during the week (Monday-Sunday). If you miss your week, you’ve got a second chance during Week 6, our Free Space/Catch-Up week!

Want to continue an existing WIP but it doesn’t match any of our themes? Send it during Week 6!

All types of fanworks are welcome! Fic, art, edits, vids, cosplay, crafts, moodboards, pinboards, songs, fanmixes, podfic—you make it, we’ll enjoy it! You’re welcome to add as many different works as you want while the event is open, Jan. 27-Mar. 9!

WEEK 1: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, HOME as a theme—Whatever the creator and/or characters think about "home," good or bad; could be about a new home, or returning to an old one.

WEEK 2: Feb. 3-9, "It's been a long time"—It could be a long time since characters saw each other, or a long time engaged on a task like the mosaic (or a long time since the author posted to this WIP—maybe one of your oldest). Special note: The 7th anniversary of The Magicians 3x05, “A Life in the Day,” falls this week, on Feb. 7. So feel free to send Mosaic Fic during this week.

WEEK 3: Feb. 10-16, Seasonal/holiday—Whether or not it’s the current season/holiday right now (any are welcome). Special note: By sheer happy coincidence, Valentine’s Day is this week.

WEEK 4: Feb. 17-23, Magical creature—A being from the show or books, or from mythology/folklore, or one you make up.

WEEK 5: Feb. 24-Mar. 2, Returning after absence (or returning to being themselves).

WEEK 6: Mar. 3-9, Free space/catch-up week! If you were working on a theme for any prior week but needed more time, now’s your chance! Or, if you are continuing an existing WIP that doesn’t match any of our themes, please share it now.

Remember—any works for the general “Welcome Home” theme may be sent any time the event is open, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9.
