a calm surrender II Roy Kent
Plot: Roy doesn't love her. In fact, he finds her irritating above anything else. And yet he manages to tell her in so many different ways.
Pairing: Roy Kent x female reader
Warnings: A lot of swearing, mentions of food and alcohol. Reader takes Keeley's spot in some plot points - no disrepect to her though she's my favorite.
Notes: This is inspired by a "100 ways to say I love you" List. Itâs 8.3k words, It's a big one.
Likes, reblogs, comments are all much appreciated. I am German. Sometimes I get the tense wrong or make mistakes. I am useless when it comes to punctuation. Go easy on me, please
"It's enough for this restless warrior Just to be with you"
Take my jacket, itâs cold & You can have half
Sheâs irritating. Everything about her manages to get under his skin. The way sheâs always smiling that big radiant smile of hers or the perpetual scent of jasmine and vanilla that seems to follow her anywhere. She laughs too loud, sheâs a terrible driver and even worse at parking. The music coming from the physio room is mostly cheesy 80s and 90s pop songs that make Roy want to give himself a lobotomy. Sheâs irritating in every which way you look at it â and maybe thatâs the exact reason why Roy canât keep himself from looking at her.
Tonight is no exception. For some inexplicable reason, his eyes manage to find her across the room and in the crowd, every single time without fail. Itâs not like itâs a conscious choice on his part either. It just happens. That sparkly green dress of herâs just seems to call out to him like the damn light across the bay at the Buchananâs dock.
And the worst part is that she noticed. She caught his eyes on her more than once, even had the audacity to smirk back at him. During the auction, for a small moment, he thought she might bid on him when her hand just barely twitched and her eyes held a sense of infinite mischief. She didnât though and for a second he could feel a string of disappointment pull at his heart. Not because he wanted her to bid on him or anything, he just wasnât particularly fond of the idea of having to spend time with Cheryl Barnaby.
He managed to find her across the room all night â except for right now. Everyoneâs on the dance floor. Keeley, Jamie, Ted, even Beard. But not her.
No oneâs paying attention to him right now, if he were to just slip out of here, no one will notice.
Itâs not like he wanted to be here in the first place. Sure, raising money for underprivileged children is something honorable and he would never let his own disdain for overly glitzy social events get in the way of doing the right thing. Doesnât mean he has to like it though.
Emptying his glass with one last sip he grabs his jacket from the back of the chair and steps out into the chilly air of a London night.
Itâs funny, really, how the moment he stops searching, the green light calls back out to him and she steps into his vision. A glowing beacon of refuge, guiding ships through dark nights to safe shores.
The cold air nips at her skin, sharp and vicious and Roy doesnât even have to get any closer to her to notice that sheâs shivering. He can barely suppress the urge to roll his eyes at her. Of course, sheâs cold, sheâs only wearing the dress and some flimsy chiffon scarf thing around her shoulders. Thatâs gonna do fuck all to shelter her from the cold. Irritating. Sheâs so irritating.
The most irritating part though, is that he canât help but slip out of his suit jacket. The most irritating part is that he canât help but care.
âTake my jacket, itâs cold.â
There it is again, that smile of hers. The one he sees sometimes when heâs about to fall asleep. How ridiculous, he thinks, how foolish of him. How absurd it is to fall asleep to the image of a smile belonging to a girl that annoys him more than anything and anyone. (Except maybe Jamie).
âAre you â are you talking to me? Little old me? Are you being nice to me?â
âJesus fuck, donât make it weird. Iâm always nice.â
She giggles and itâs bloody adorable. So adorable that a smile threatens to pull the corners of his lips upwards. See? Fucking irritating.
âYou hardly talk more than 3 words to me when youâre in the physio room but â okay. If thatâs your version of nice.â
âTake the jacket or not, I donât care. Iâll let you freeze out here if youâre trying to be difficult. Means fuck all to me.â
Thatâs not true. They both know it. No matter how much Roy tries to deny or hide it, there is a soft heart buried inside the rough exterior. He just canât risk showing that to everyone. Canât have people getting the wrong ideas.
âNo, please I â sorry Iâm just â you make me nervous and when Iâm nervous I talk a lot and then most of what comes out is just stupid nonsense or deflecting humor or something. I would really appreciate that jacket. It really is fucking freezing.â
Roy has been in the public eye for years now, heâs used to people being intimidated, nervous. Usually, itâs strangers though, people who donât know him. Those that do, that work with him, usually lose that feeling pretty quickly.
âWhy the fuck would I make you nervous?â
She just glances at him before turning her face back towards the street âHave you seen yourself?â
Heâs not sure how to take that. Is it a compliment? Does she think heâs handsome? Itâs not like it matters to him really. In fact, the thought that she might find him attractive is â say it with me â fucking irritating.
He contemplates asking her outright if this is something she does on purpose. If sheâs deliberately trying to rile him up. The words are on the tip of his tongue when he notices her shiver once again and all that was on his mind vanishes against the desperate need to keep her warm.
âJesus. Let me just â â
Jasmine. Vanilla. He smells it when he slips the jacket around her shoulders. He wonders if his jacket will smell like that, like her, when he gets it back. Wouldnât be the worst thing in the world. Not because itâs her or anything â just because it smells fantastic and Roy is not one to deny himself the simple pleasures in life.
âI really appreciate it, Roy.â
And the gratefulness with which she says it is not irritating at all. Itâs endearing. Itâs flutters-in-his-tummy kind of wonderful.
Instead of reacting like a normal, reasonable person with a simple âyou're welcomeâ, he gives her one of his signature grunts. Thatâs as good a normal reasonable reaction as anyone can expect from him, really.
âWhat are you out here all by yourself for anyway? Trying to get kidnapped or something?â
âNo,â there it is again, the giggle. Ugh. â Iâm waiting for my Uber. Heâs â âShe checks her phone, illuminating her face with the harsh blue light. He thinks she looks wonderful either way. Then scolds himself for thinking it. Some simple pleasures he has to deny himself. â 12 minutes away.â
Roy isnât quite certain whether or not he considers himself a good person. He tries to be, itâs a conscious effort each and every day. He helps out his sister, he gives in to all of Phoebeâs wishes even if it means having to play the princess yet again and never getting to be the dragon. He donates more money to charity than the press is aware of, leaves hefty tips whenever he goes out to eat and though he does swear a lot, he still tries to be polite if he can.
He tries to be a good person and a good person doesnât let a woman wait outside in the cold dark night by herself. No matter how infuriating she is.
âDo you mind if I keep you company? Couldnât live with myself if you got snatched up and I was the last person to see you alive.â
A laugh tumbles from her lips. A step up from a giggle and god does it send shockwaves through his traitorous heart.
âThe press would have a field day if that happened. I can see the headlines, âFootball legend Roy Kent involved in the disappearance of Richmond sports physioâ and then they use a picture of you from like 10 years ago with the really bad long hair that makes you look a little sketchy.â
âI didnât look sketchy.â
âYou looked a little sketchy.â
Roy glances at her through the corner of his eyes. She really is a dream in forest green, the sequins, and rhinestones reflecting the street lights like little kaleidoscopes. Heâs almost certain heâll dream in shades of green tonight. Heâs sure heâll see her smiling face.
âYou look beautiful.â
The words fall from his lips before he can stop them and it makes him want to put his head through a wall. Fuck.
âThank you ââ she replies bashfully, âdo you want some sausage roll?â
In all the scenarios running through his head of how this conversation couldâve gone, this is not one of the outcomes he expected.
âWhat?â he asks, one eyebrow raised in question.
âDo you want a part of my sausage roll?â she chuckles and pulls a brown paper bag from her sparkly clutch bag. âI wasnât sure if they were gonna actually feed us or just serve us rich people portions so I brought backup. You can have half if you want.â
She breaks the flaky pastry in two and holds one piece out to him. Even her nails are painted to match the dress. If he was any worse a man he would risk it all for just one taste of her and whatever black magic she possesses that gets so deeply under his skin. He is a better man than that tough, so he settles for a taste of the sausage roll.
âYouâre a strange womanâ
âStrange or smart?â
Taking a bite from the sausage roll, buttery and flaky and greasy, he must admit she has a point.
âBit of both.â
âI can live with that.â
Silence settles upon them, well as silent as a London night can be. It feels weirdly comfortable. No expectations to be someone or do something. Just her and the city and the fucking Greggs sausage roll.
And â Elton John?
âOh, I love that song!â
A string of pink lights adorns the top of the rikshaw as it turns the corner, loudly blasting Can you feel the love tonight. The driver catches sight of them and Roy canât suppress the annoyed groan slipping its way out.
âGood evening can I interest you lovebirds in a â â
âNo, fuck off!â
Eltonâs voice gets quieter and quieter as the startled driver rides his rickshaw further away and back into the inky black of the night.
Lovebirds, he called them lovebirds. Thought the two of them were anything other than acquaintances. People pushed together by circumstances and coincidence. As if anything between them could ever happen. Sheâs already getting under his skin, sticks around his thoughts, and ghosts through his head without him ever giving her permission to do so. Sheâs all he can think about lately and yes he knows it sounds repetitive but god itâs so damn irritating.
âI wouldâve liked to hear the rest of the song.â
Roy scoffs âFigures.â
âWhat's that supposed to mean?â
He turns to face her and, for the first time since heâs stepped out of the building and into this tiny bubble theyâre sharing for just this fleeting moment, he looks at her. Really looks at her. With her sparkly dress and her lips painted a deep red like candy apples. With flakes of the pastry sticking to her lower lip and his jacket wrapped around her looking almost like this is where itâs always belonged.
Heâs never had a heart attack before, he wonders if this is what it feels like.
âYou play the worst fucking music when youâre working in the physio room.â
âUh â are you insulting my taste in music? Are you really out here insulting the legend, sir Elton John? The Lion King soundtrack is a religious experience, okay?â
He hates that he can clearly tell by the glimmer of mischief in her eyes that she is joking more than anything. He shouldnât be able to tell. Mere acquaintances canât do shit like that.
âNo, in fact, itâs a pretty fucking great movie. It came out when my sister was a kid though and I had to watch that shit a million times. You know how traumatizing it is having to watch Mufasa die over and over again?â
She grants him a look of understanding and shrugs her shoulders in agreement âAt least itâs not Frozen, eh? â
âI have a 6-year-old niece.â
Roy Kent has a lot of things in his life that he takes pride in. His career and talent, all the hard work he put in to be where he is today. He takes pride in being a good brother and a loving uncle and maybe even a good friend and leader.
Making her let out a snort as she laughs at his Frozen-induced misery? That might be his proudest achievement to date.
âIâm glad you find my suffering amusing.â
âWhat can I say? Youâre a funny guy, Roy Kent. So funny in fact that I almost bid on you at the auction.â
He wants to let out the most guttural scream in the existence of mankind. She canât just go ahead and say stuff like that. Not when he is trying so hard to keep their interactions at the most basic level. Not when she already haunts his dreams. Sheâs irritating, Roy. Not charming or lovable or â beautiful. Or maybe she is all those things but most of all sheâs annoying and infuriating and â oh heâs so fucked.
âWhy didnât you?â
âOh, well Iâm just a measly sports physician. Donât get me wrong, it's good money but I donât really earn quite enough to throw thousands of pounds at a man to have him spend time with me.â
Heâd do it for free. Hate every second of it, naturally. But heâd do it for free.
Canât tell her that though. Never. So once again he just grunts.
A silver Toyota pulls up to the curb, effectively bursting their little bubble of comfort as the driver leans down to look out the window. âYou (Y/N) ?â
âYes, thatâs me.â
She makes a motion to slip out of the jacket, only for Roy to step in and hold it closed, keeping it in place, wrapped around her, and shielding her from the cold.
âKeep it,â his voice comes out all rough and husky. More than usual. Itâs probably the jasmine scent getting to him, clouding his every sense. âDonât want you to freeze on the way home. Just give it back another time.â
âOh, okay. Well, thanks again. Goodnight, Roy.â
He opens the door for her and closes it softly once sheâs settled into the car. Roy tries so hard to be a good man, a good person but in that moment all he wants to do is be a little bit worse, just a little bit. Just enough to rip the door open again, pull her out of the seat and kiss her stupid.
Instead, he wishes her a good night and sends her off before stepping out into the night himself. There is a smile playing on his lips all the way home and itâs so fucking irritating.
I was in the neighborhood & Itâs okay I couldnât sleep anyway
The door leading to her apartment is bright red and there is a little white sign and the picture of a dog with huge fucking ears that reminds him of Gizmo from the Gremlins. It says âBeware of the dog â might cuddle you to death.â
Itâs cheesy as hell. He loves it.
Heâs not quite sure how he ended up here. Losing is never fun. Feeling yourself slowly becoming unable to do the things you love, the things you were good at, and actively playing a part in your team losing? Thatâs absolutely mortifying.
Of all the places he couldâve gone, all the people he couldâve seen â he ends up in front of her door. Red and shiny like her lips that night.
Itâs almost 1am and all things considered, this is a really dumb idea. Sheâs probably asleep and waking her up would be fucking rude. He should just go and forget this ever happened instead of knocking on her door in the middle of the night. Thatâs what the rational part of his brain tells him at least.
Roy was never really good at listening to the rational part of his brain.
Tiny barks, no doubt belonging to the dog on the sign, echo through the hallway before the door swings open just enough for (Y/N) to look at him with tired eyes.
âRoy?â
âI was in the neighborhood I â I didnât mean to wake you. Iâm sorry.â
Itâs not a lie, really. He was in the neighborhood. He walked here specifically to knock on her door and see her.
âItâs okay, I couldnât sleep anyway.â
Now that is most definitely a lie. Her eyes are sleepy, her hair disheveled and he can just about make out the pillow print on her cheek.
âDo you want to come in?â
He does. He shouldnât but he really does.
The apartment is small but it feels cozy rather than cramped. The walls are lined with pictures, little reminders of happy moments and people she loves.
Thereâs one of him too, well him and Isaac and Sam and then her at the end of the line. He thinks it was taken at some get-together after a particularly hard-fought win. He likes to know that thereâs a picture of him on her wall even if his appearance in the photo is probably more incidental than anything.
âI didnât know you had a dog.â
Itâs a stupid thing to say, there is so much he doesnât know about her. He doesnât know where she was born or if she has siblings or if she always wanted to be a physiotherapist. But there are things he does know, like the specific way she likes her coffee and that she always gets a snickerdoodle cookie from the bakery down the road from the stadium, every Wednesday without fail. How she scrunches up her nose when sheâs frustrated and that she snorts when something makes her laugh really hard.
âHis name is Yoda. Heâs a papillon and also my best friend.â
âDonât let Sam hear.â
âOh, heâs also Samâs best friend.â
Yoda, itâs a fitting name. He does look like a Yoda.
âSo what brings you here, Roy? At uh â â she glances towards her open kitchen and the digital clock on the microwave â 1:04 am?â
Shouldâve gotten his story straight before he came here. What is he supposed to say? I felt like proper shit and wanted to see your smile? Surely not.
So he blurts out the first thing that comes to his mind.
âCame to get my jacket back.â
Absolute dumbass.
âYour jacket? Oh uh. sure. Let me go get it.â
She regards him with confusion and curiosity, he can tell sheâs not really buying his story.
âOr, if you arenât in a rush, I was about to pop in a movie and pig out on some popcorn? Do you want to join me?â
This might be the first time he lets her see the smile she continues to put on his face.
âFuck yeah, what are we watching?â
âVernon is such a little bitch. Antagonizing fucking teenagers? What a loser."
âRight?,â (Y/N) agrees, taking a sip from her glass of rose before stuffing another handful of buttery popcorn into her mouth. âBender needed someone to care, not just another adult yelling at him. "Such a loser. Hey, now that I think about it, you do give me John Bender vibes. All broody and mysterious.â
Roy just scoffs in response.
Her eyes fall onto his empty glass of wine resting on the little square table in front of the couch.
âYou want a top-up?â
âNo, Iâm good. I should probably get going.â
He hates to admit it, itâs something heâll take to the grave with him, but thereâs something about rosĂ© that gets to him. It makes him tipsy immediately. He doesnât want to go home but the longer he stays the more he opens himself up to saying something stupid and fucking this up â whatever this is.
âDid you walk here?â
âMmh.â
âOh well I canât in good conscience let you walk home, half a bottle of rosĂ© in your system and dealing with all the emotions brought on by the breakfast club. Couldnât live with myself if you got snatched up and I was the last person to see you aliveâ
Throwing his own words back at him should be infuriating, annoying. It isnât. Itâs lovely. Sheâs lovely.
âYou can stay if you want. My couch isnât the biggest but I think youâll fit just fine.â
The sincerity in her eyes hits him like a dart to the chest. Itâs something so simple as offering him her couch for the night but it means everything for a man who has grown so awfully accustomed to loneliness.
âIf I stay, will you make me breakfast?â
âFuck noâ
Laughter fills the tiny living room and it takes him a second to realize itâs his own.
âI might be up for a Starbucks run tomorrow morning before work though.â
âSounds great. I love peppermint lattes, those are fucking delicious.â
She grants him another smile as she gathers their glasses and the empty bottle and brings them to the kitchen before returning with a fluffy pink blanket for him. He thinks that smile couldâve just about killed him, thinks he might just die right here on her couch and it wouldnât be so bad.
âWell goodnight, then. Hope you donât mind Yodaâ
The dog is curled up on Royâs chest like a little bagel. Itâs gonna be annoying later, heâs sure but hell will freeze over before he disturbs the little pup.
âThatâs fine.â
âHe snores, just thought you should know.â
âMakes two of us then, hope he doesnât mind.â
Another laugh. Another tiny heart attack.
Sheâs by the door, just about to turn off the light and plunge the room into darkness, when she hesitates for a moment.
âHey Roy,â
âYes?â
âIâm sorry you guys lost today and I â I can see you struggling but I just wanted you to know that it was not your fault. I need you to know that.â
The entire way here, he tried to make himself rationalize that. Make himself understand that losing is part of the game and that he did his best. But knowing your best might not be good enough anymore is a hard fucking pill to swallow.
Hearing her say that itâs not his fault, it takes the weight off for a moment. Not all the way, never all the way. But a tiny little bit and thatâs a whole lot already.
âGoodnight, (Y/N).â
âNight, Roy.â
He falls asleep with the taste of rosé on his tongue, the snoring of a little dog in his ears, and the sight of her on his mind, all sleepy eyes and messy hair. She never looked better.
It looks good on you & I like your laugh
Heâs positively buzzing with euphoria. They won, something no one thought was possible. They won and he scored the winning goal.
Spirits are high as the team and their friends have taken over the Karaoke place. Shots and drinks flow with no regard to the tab theyâre raking up or the headache that awaits each of them tomorrow. None of that matters right now. Tonight is made for celebrating. Consequences donât exist right here and now.
Rebecca burns the house down with her rendition of let it go and after a short intermission by Dani, singing a Spanish song that neither of them managed to join in with their non-existent knowledge of the language, the opening chords to another familiar song fill the room.
âWell, thanks for making us all look like amateurs, Rebecca,â (Y/N) says into the microphone as she takes her place on stage. Her words are laced with happiness and laughter and Roy thinks she must have him under some spell because he canât manage to not smile when sheâs around. Itâs a bit ridiculous if heâs being honest.
âI will most definitely not be able to live up to that performance but I thought we could stay in the Disney bubble for a moment.â
Her eyes meet his across the room and when she winks at him it takes everything in him not to get up on stage and devour her. Fucking irritating.
âI know you all know this song so sing along if you feel like it. This oneâs for you, John Bender.â
He knows itâs one of the cheesiest love songs ever, written for a movie about a cartoon lion. But sitting on the couch at the karaoke place surrounded by his team, having just scored a winning goal and listening to the girl that haunts his dreams sing straight to him and only him, he thinks Elton has a point. He can feel the love tonight. Itâs in the smiles of his friends, and the voices coming together all chaotic and off-key singing along to the song. And there is love in her eyes, clear as day and undeniable.
âAnd can you feel the love tonight How it's laid to rest? It's enough to make kings and vagabonds Believe the very bestâ
The night is coming to an end, everyoneâs found their way to their respective rooms â or whoeverâs room they felt like staying at. Royâs pretty sure he saw Rebeccaâs friend enter Tedâs room but thatâs none of his fucking business, is it?
âOkay, you canât laugh though!â (Y/N)âs voice calls out from the bathroom and drifts towards the main part of the room where Roy is perched on the chair by the window.
This isnât his room and really he knows he shouldnât be here. But being alone right now sounded like proper torture. He wasnât ready to leave this magical night behind yet. Not like this. Not when she sang to him and he had nothing to give her in return. So when she invited him to her room to watch yet another John Hughes movie on Netflix, he couldnât do anything but accept.
âAre you sleeping in one of those weird fluffy onesies?â
âNo, god no.â
âThen I donât know why Iâd laugh at you.â
When she steps into the room, he can see why sheâd think heâd laugh at her choice of sleepwear. The white shirt looks not so white anymore, there is a hole at the bottom and a mysterious red stain by the collar. It doesnât make him laugh though. It makes him fucking hard. Because thatâs his name on the back of it. Thatâs a 2014 world cup Roy Kent England Jersey.
âFuck me.â
He doesn't mean to let it slip but alcohol and euphoria have made his lips go loose.
âI knoooow, itâs embarrassing. I meant to bring something else but itâs just so comfortable.â
âIt looks good on you.â
It does. He thought the green dress was it. Then he thought she looked absolutely adorable, all sleepy and natural. But this? This is the look that pushes him over the edge. This is everything.
âYeah?â she asks and twirls around the room, not unlike Phoebe whenever Roy gifts her yet another new princess dress. Heâs just such a sucker, can never say no when she asks him for something. âYou just wait and see, Iâll steal your job soon enough.â
That makes him erupt into laughter yet again, he doesnât think heâs laughed quite as much lately as when he is with her.
âIâve seen you attempt to play before. Iâm not worried.â
âI like your laugh,â she says, all warm eyes and wistful smile.
âYeah?â
âYes.â
Something takes over, an invisible force pulling him to his feet and making him walk up to her. Sheâs leaning against the wall as he places one hand on her hip, the other on the wall next to her head. This shouldnât be happening, he knows this. Itâs dumb to believe that whatever tension there is between them can lead to anything. Thatâs just not in the cards for him no matter how much he wishes for it.
Girls like her donât fall for boys like him. They never did, they never will.
âRoy Kent, you won today.â
Winning the game is the last thing on his mind right now. How could he ever think about winning right this moment when her hand is softly resting on his cheek and her nose gently nuzzling against his and the â
A knock on the door cuts through the moment making Roy let go and take a step back.
âFucks sake.â
In his defense, Sam looks apologetic as he stands in front of the door, signature smile on his face. Good-natured and lovable. If this was any other moment Roy wouldnât have been able to be mad at him. But this is that moment and he is a little pissed right now.
âSorry I didnât mean to disturb, I was just wondering if you had another phone charger. I canât find mine and I know you always bring extra so â â
âUh, yeah let me go get it real quick.â (Y/N) says and turns back towards the room.
Royâs eyes connect with hers for a split second and itâs like a bucket of ice straight over his head. They both know whatever magical spell they had been under, itâs broken and gone and all thatâs left now is a big old pile of what-ifs.
âItâs getting late, I should leave. Goodnight, (Y/N). Night, Sam.â
âWeâll reschedule, yeah?â
Tiny smile on his lips he nods his head in agreement.
He gets a soft âgoodnightâ in return and though he hates to admit it, the touch of her hand against his cheek lingers there all the way to his room and even further into his dreams.
Call me when you get home & Weâll figure it out
Rain pounds against the roof and windows like tiny bullets. A rainstorm has Richmond tight in its clutches so cruel and unforgiving the team canât even train right now.
And yet for some reason Roy still finds himself in the workout room, trying to push himself to do just 5 more minutes on the treadmill. Just 5 more.
Actually, itâs not entirely true. He knows why heâs here. Part of him hopes that if he just pushes himself enough, he can overcome the pain in his leg and all the issues it causes. That if he just tries harder, he can go back to being the talented overachiever he used to be.
But it hurts. A sharp stabbing pain rushes through his knee forcing him to step off the treadmill. He hates this. In fact, itâs his worst fucking nightmare. Football is all heâs ever been good at, he canât lose that. Itâs his entire life.
If heâs not Roy the footballer, who is he? Some bloke named Roy with a dead career and no one to come home to? Now doesnât that sound delightful?
"Roy?"
âJesus, fuck!â
There she goes again giving him a heart attack, only this time itâs not because sheâs being cute or anything.
âOh shit, I didnât mean to scare you.â
The smile on her face falls as she catches sight of him holding onto his knee. He can almost see the thoughts running through her head. She knows about his knee. If anyone knows how bad it is, itâs her. She told him not to overdo it. Said that would only make it worse.
He knows she has pity on him and he hates it. Itâs irritating coming from everyone. Irritating and misplaced. Why would they pity him? Itâs his own damn fault for not being good enough anymore.
But coming from her? Thatâs even worse. No one wants a guy thatâs getting too old to do his job properly. Thatâs falling apart and breaking.
â Not that he wants her or anything. Oh, Roy, who are you trying to fool here? Of course, he wants her.
âDonât look at me like that, Iâm fine.â
She raises her eyebrow in disbelief, in that bratty way that drives him crazy.
âI said Iâm fine, (Y/N).â
âI hear what youâre saying,â she says and comes to stand next to him, crossing her arms in defiance. âbut I can also see the way youâre holding your knee and that face youâre making. Youâre in pain, love.â
Love. He doesnât hate how it sounds when she calls him that. Irritating for sure but also â sweet.
âIâll be fine! What are you even doing here?â
He hasnât seen a lot of her ever since the night in Liverpool and while part of him was quite glad about it because he honestly wasnât sure whether or not to bring up whatever had or had not happened between them, another part of him had missed her smile desperately.
âI work here.â
âYouâre a fucking smartass, arenât you.â
âI try.â
Fuck, even when sheâs being deliberately difficult she manages to pull a smirk from him.
âI had some paperwork to do but by the time I arrived here, the storm was so bad that now I have to wait for it to stop before I can drive home. I hate driving when it rains.â
âOh you should,â Roy returns, nodding his head in agreement âYouâre a horrible driver in the best of weather.â
She responds with a scandalized gasp and a hand placed on her heart in mock upset âI am not a horrible driver! Take that back.â
âIt took you 18 minutes to park your car the other day. I know because I saw it, we all saw it. Boys took the time and had bets going. Jamie won 20 quid.â
âWha â okay Iâll have to have a word with the guys, youâre ridiculous. But donât think you can change the topic on me, Mister. Is your knee getting worse?â
Yes, and he fucking hates it. Canât even say the words out loud because that feels like admitting defeat. And thatâs a terrifying thing to do.
Fortunately for him, he doesnât have to say anything. A look is all it takes and she nods her head in understanding.
âThatâs okay, Roy. Weâll figure something out.â
We will figure something out. We as in him and her. Since pretty much the beginning of his professional career, Roy had admirers. People who would latch onto everything he did or said and hold him to abnormally high standards he would never be able to reach. They adored him but they also didnât know him. She knows him even when he tries so hard to keep her at arm's length. She knows him and is still in his corner, still has his back. The only people who ever did that were his family.
Itâs an unusual feeling but he really really likes it. Even if itâs a little terrifying.
âWhat if â â he takes a deep breath, trying to form the words that weigh so heavy on his heart âWhat if I canât go back to how it used to be? What if this is the end for me?â
âDo you want me to be honest or nice?â
âLay it on me then.â
âThings might not get back to how they used to be and thereâs not really much you can do about it other than learn to accept it and then figure out a new place for yourself.â
âFootball is all I have.â
âThatâs not true but even if it was there is so much more about it than just the players.â
Sheâs right but itâs still a bitter pill to swallow.
ââŠand with that smile of yours, you can always go into modeling. Iâm sure theyâre always looking for new faces in the toothpaste commercial business.â
âOh fuck off.â
âSee! Thereâs that smile I was talking about.â
âYouâre fucking insufferable sometimes.â
She is. He adores it.
âOh, but you like it â right?â
âWhat?â
âYou do â like it? Like me?â
Itâs the first time heâs seen her act insecure. Sheâs always so bubbly and happy and smiling, he hates that he put any doubt in her mind that he does anything but cherish her.
âYou irritate me, woman. Drive me up the fucking wall, every day.â
âIâm sorry.â
âNo! Donât say sorry. I love it. I think youâre a fucking knockout. Best thing since sliced bread.â
He does, he truly does and it feels nice to say it out loud for once. To admit it to her and to himself. It feels nice when she comes closer and when she rests her arms around his neck and it feels fucking phenomenal when her nose brushes past his and he can almost feel her lips on his.
Almost.
Thatâs until her phone beeps and she pulls away altogether.
âAh shit, I gotta go.â
âFuck sake. The universe hates me.â
âThe universe doesnât hate you, Roy Kent. We just have bad timing. â
Heâs not convinced.
âWhat about the storm?â
âI think the rain stopped, listen.â
Roy hears nothing. Where raindrops were drumming against the roof and windows just minutes ago, there is silence. Heâs never wished for a rainstorm to persist more than he does at that moment.
âWell, call me when you get home at least. Roads will still be wet.â
âAw, Roy, are you worried about me?â
His lips say no, but his eyes and his smile tell a different story.
You can stay & Is this okay? Can I hold your hand?
This is it. This is the end. Heâs seen this one coming for a while now but he tried so hard. He trained and pushed and it was all for nothing. Theyâre losing and his career as an active footballer is over for good.
The door to the locker room opens slowly, almost cautiously and heâs just about to yell and whoever dares to disturb him, when his head snaps up and he sees (Y/N) standing in the doorway.
âWhat are you doing here? Game is still going, youâre the fucking Physio.â
âGood thing thereâs more than one of us. I have to make sure all my players are okay.â
Iâm not okay. Thatâs what he wants to say. He wants to scream it from the rooftops. Heâs not okay. Heâs not sure he ever will be.
âGet out, (Y/N).â
She canât see him like this. Defeated. Broken. Old.
Instead of listening to him, she sits down beside him and holds an ice pack to his injured knee.
âAs a physio, I need to tell you that what you did was really stupid.â
He knows it was. It was a calculated risk he was willing to take and if nothing else, he kept Jamie from scoring and the fans appreciated it. That was all that mattered at that moment.
âBut as a friend and Richmond fan, I think it was brilliant. I just wish you didnât hurt yourself in the process.â
Silence settles over them and (Y/N) is just about to get back up when he grabs onto her arm and pulls her back down. âYou can stay.â
âOkay.â
And for a long while they just sit. No words, no expectations. Just them.
Softly, almost like a whisper, he feels her touch against his hand, sliding her fingers between his.
âIs this okay? Can I hold your hand?â
Itâs not okay. Itâs phenomenal. Itâs everything he couldâve wished for in that moment but never wouldâve had the nerve to ask. Itâs a promise that he isnât alone in this. There is someone there holding his hand through the darkest of times.
A green light guiding him to safe shores.
âDonât you fucking dare let go.â
Stay there, Iâm coming to get you & I can't wait for tomorrow
Turns out, retiring from a successful football career does not mean you suddenly have a lot of free time. In fact, Roy doesnât think heâs ever been this busy doing shit he doesnât like.
Everyone wants an interview, a statement, a âwhat happens nextâ. Itâs a lot of paperwork and contracts and shit he doesnât care about. The point is, heâs fucking busy. So busy he hasnât seen (Y/N) in quite a few days. Nothing has really changed since their moment in the locker room but somehow everything feels different.
Itâs exactly 4:12 am when his phone rings. He almost doesnât want to answer but calls at 4am usually mean bad news and heâd never forgive himself if something happened to his sister or Phoebe or (Y/N) or even (and he will deny this if you ask him about it) Jamie just because he couldnât be bothered to answer his phone.
âHello?â
âRoyoooo.â
Oh. Oh!
A smirk pulls at his lips.
â(Y/N)?â
âSorry ââ she says and stops for a giggle âSorry to wake you. I just â I was out with the girls and I didnât plan on drinking but I did. They had a buy one get one free deal. It would be stupid to say no, right?â
âRight.â
"So, yeah."
âGo on. Didnât just call me to tell me about the drinks, did you.â
âOh, no. I just wanted to talk to you while I wait for my Uber. I miss you.â
âDo you?â
âSo much!â her words are slow and slightly slurred. âEvery fucking day. Like â god, I just wanna see your stupid handsome face.â
âItâs handsome, innit?â
âYou have no idea! I just want to kiss you, so badly.â
Kiss him. She wants to kiss him. Sure, it almost happened twice but itâs still different hearing her outright say it. But then again, sheâs drunk and by the time she wakes up tomorrow, she probably wonât remember half of what sheâs saying right now.
âWhere are you?â
âItâs that weird little bar around the corner from Samâs restaurant. The one with the green door.â
âGo on and cancel that Uber.â
âThen how am I going to get home?â
âStay there, Iâm coming to get you.â
Roy isnât quite certain whether or not he considers himself a good person. He tries to be, itâs a conscious effort each and every day. He tries to be a good person and a good person doesnât let the woman heâs absolutely head over heels for wait outside in the cold dark night by herself. No matter how infuriating she is.
âOkay,â she agrees, a giggle slipping past her lips âThank you. Canât wait to see you.â
And though Roy had other plans for his weekend than picking up a drunk girl at 4 in the morning, he also canât wait to see her.
ââŠand like it was mostly sugar, right? So I thought why not have another one. Turns out it was mostly vodka.â
âWho couldâve guessed.â
Sheâs cuddled up on his couch in one of his shirts looking into his eyes and retelling her night in vivid detail. Her story is slurred and a bit all over the place, blame it on her tipsy brain. It takes her forever to get to the point and when she does, the point doesnât even make all that much sense. It doesnât matter, heâd listen to her ramble forever if it meant he got to spend time with her wearing his shirt sitting on his couch â looking into his eyes.
âYouâre going to feel like shit tomorrow.â
âI know,â she shrugs then scoots closer to him and wraps her arms around his âbut youâre here so itâs only half as bad really.â
âIf Iâm feeling generous Iâll even make you breakfast.â
âYou really are the dream, Roy Kent.â
Sheâs clawing at his chest, prying open his ribcage and burying herself where his heart used to be. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
âYou have to stop saying shit like that. People are gonna think youâre in love with me or something.â
She pulls away slightly and looks up at him with those big eyes of hers before resting one hand on his cheek.
âRoy, I am. I thought you knew.â
He had a hunch, of course. Fostered a spark of hope in his heart that there could be something between them after all. But once you grow accustomed to loneliness itâs a little hard to let yourself believe.
âDo I need to show you to believe me?â
She pulls his face closer to hers and for a millisecond he wants to let go, but when he smells the alcohol on her breath he pulls back. This isnât right.
âDid I do something wrong?â
âYouâre off your tits. Iâm not kissing you like this. Our first kiss is not going to be some inebriated tongue-wagging. You hear me? Iâm a hopeless fucking romantic, that kiss is gonna be special. Iâm gonna kiss you stupid.â
She bites her lips to suppress the smile from taking over.
âSo if I were to ask again tomorrow, youâd say yes?â
âMh.â
âPromise?â
âYes.â
At that she snuggles further into his arms and rests her head against his shoulder, a content smile on her face as she closes her eyes.
âOh, I canât wait for tomorrow.â
He doesnât admit it, but neither can he.
I think you're beautiful & Iâll meet you halfway
âRoy?â
Her voice echoes through his house as the eggs sizzle on the stove.
âWhy is there a small child looking at me?â
âPhoebe, stop staring at her you little creep!â
âSheâs so pretty.â
She has a point.
10 minutes later the girls join him in the kitchen, walking in hand in hand and big smiles on their faces. Seeing them get along makes his heart grow approximately 12 sizes. That being said, the two of them teaming up against him sounds like trouble to him. Good trouble though. Trouble he loves to deal with.
âGood morning, Roy.â
âMorning. Pheebs, go sit down, breakfast is almost ready.â
âOkay, Uncle Roy.â
Once sheâs out of the immediate earshot he turns back towards (Y/N). Though she tried her best to conceal it, yesterday's makeup is still smudged around her eyes and her hair is a downright mess. Sheâs wearing his shirt though, standing barefoot in his kitchen after bonding with his niece.
Sometimes life is fucking sweet.
âDonât look at me like that, I know I look like a mess.â
âI think youâre beautiful.â
âYouâre delusional.â
âThatâs not what you said last night. Think you called me the fucking dream if I recall correctly. Said you were in love with me.â
(Y/N) leans against the kitchen island, her hands flat against the countertop and her eyes trained on Roy.
âI did say that, didnât I?â
âYes.â
Roy mirrors her position, arms resting on the kitchen island across from her. God, she really is so beautiful.
âRemember what you said?â
âDo you?â
âYou promised me something, Roy.â
Roy Kent doesnât make promises lightly. He thinks thereâs hardly anything quite as heartbreaking and awful as breaking a promise. He prides himself in keeping all the ones heâs made.
Itâs only right to keep this one too.
âPhoebe,â he calls out to the little girl without moving his eyes away from (Y/N) for even a second âBlindfold!â
The 6-year-old slaps her tiny hands over her eyes obeying her uncle's orders with no hesitation and no questions asked. Heâs proud of her. Silly little idiot.
Leaning across the counter, his lips almost reach (Y/N)âs. Sheâs so close. So close.
Only â
âFuck, I canât reach. My knee.â
Thereâs so much love in her eyes as she regards him. It almost knocks him out.
âDonât worry about it. Iâll meet you halfway,â She says and gets up on her tiptoes.
Across the counter their lips meet. There are no fireworks or butterflies or an angel choir singing. But there is her tasting of toothpaste and smelling his deodorant. Her and the feeling of belonging. Of comfort and domesticity and love. He loves this woman, undeniably and irrevocably.
Itâs a great kiss. Fucking mindblowing. There is no need for rom-com-induced fairytale fantasies when you have the real thing and it is so much better than any story could ever be.
âHey Roy,â she whispers against his lips as they come up for air.
âHmm?â
âThe eggs are burning.â
âFuck!â
âYou owe me a pound, Uncle Roy!â
Irritating! Both of them.
Theyâre his whole entire heart.
I love you & I love you
âI love you.â
Itâs a normal fucking Tuesday when she says it for the first time. Really says it. Using those exact words. Thereâs nothing special about that day but with those words, she puts magic into it. The way she puts magic into his life every single day.
âFuck you!â
âSorry, what?â
Sheâs laughing. Sheâs always laughing and smiling that goddamn smile that makes him go all soft inside. Beautiful, lovely, knockout that she is.
âI said fuck you. Iâve been thinking about how to tell you all fucking week and here you go and say it first. Youâre infuriating.â
Softly she rolls over so sheâs resting on his chest, fingers softly tracing patterns into his skin.
âYouâve said it a million times before, Roy.â
âI love you, (Y/N).â
Canât hurt to say it again.
âI know. I knew. I always knew. From the moment you gave me your jacket.â
Of course, she knew. She took one look at him and it was like she got a view straight into his soul. Straight into his heart with all the vices and virtues, all his triumphs and defeats. All the good and the bad.
How fucking irritating. He loves her for it.

Can we just talk about the quality difference between season 6 finale and season 7 premiere?
Season 6 as a whole was pretty lack luster with poor writing that peaked in the worst way in its finale. I was completely disappointed in the quality of the finale (no fault of the actors, it was a writing issue) it felt rushed, and while a lot of the emergencies in the show are far-fetched, this one felt way too out there. It felt too far-fetched even for 9-1-1. The show known for stupid emergencies that make no sense. Like the meteor girl. Or the car being thrown into the building's like 11th(??) floor.
Season 6 left a bad taste in my mouth and I was worried for season 7. I've seen a lot of shows get worse as time went on, their time having passed and having needed to be ended seasons ago. I was worried that was happening with 9-1-1 but I have new hope after watching the season 7 premiere.
It's new. I could feel that it was different, for obvious reasons. But it wasn't bad. Natalia is fine. I'm happy for that. Not just because of "Buddie" but because Buck deserves someone who will love him just as fiercely as he will love them and Natalia isn't that. She just was obsessed with death and Buck had died so she had like a death fetish or something.
With Chris's issue- at first I hated it. I was worried they were ruining his character, until I thought about it more. They're making him more like Buck, on purpose. The two share similar traumas and not just the tsunami. As Christopher gets older, it makes sense his trauma manifests in more mature ways. He isn't the little 8 year old we met. He is still a kid of course, but he's also slowly becoming a teenager. Once I thought about it, I liked it. I feel like it showcases the importance of Buck in the Diaz family. Even if you don't like romantic Buddie, anyone who watches the show can see how important Buck is to Eddie and Chris. I think Chris's trauma response is meant to be a literary parallel to Buck, how Chris is Buck's too. Even if not biologically but emotionally. I believe this is really important in a story telling point of view.
The Diaz family aside, I really liked this episode. The writing was distinctly better than it was in season 6. It made me excited for this season! I can't wait for season 7. I'm excited instead of dreading it! I can't wait to see what we have in store!
I pretty much loved the entire episode and I didn't feel disappointed by it. There was such a drastic quality change between season 6 finale and the premiere. I re-watched the finale before watching the premiere which just highlighted the quality difference. The writing isn't poor. The emergencies don't feel rushed. The pacing is better and the connections between the characters and the events flows better and makes more sense. I'm not going to lie, I lost trust because of season 6. But I think season 7 is going to build that trust back.
I'm really excited for this season!

The Thin Line | Bucky Barnes
Bucky Barnes x fem!reader
Summary: Of one thing you were certainâBucky Barnes hated you, and you hated him. How could you not considering the super soldier had made it his personal mission to make your life a living hell after you had been assigned to protect him? But there was someone after Bucky from his past, and now he was forced to work alongside you to stop them. And in the process, you would find out just how thin that line was between love and hate.
A/N: This one comes from this request that I received a while back! I have been criminally slow in responding and I sincerely apologize. Hopefully this makes up for it a little bit đ€
Warnings: blood and violence (all canon for the MCU), someone takes a severe beating (may or may not be reader), ANGST, fluff scattered here and there, fatws!Bucky, banter, mature themes and allusions, grumpy!Bucky
âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠâ§âŠ
Hate. There was perhaps no other word as final and lasting as hate.Â
People had always said that there was a thin line between love and hate, that the two emotions were so similar it was often hard to tell them apart. But not to you. You knew the line between them distinctly.Â
You had seen people fall out of love as easily as the winking out of a candle, and in the same manner youâd watched a personâs hate burn on even past the grave. You couldnât understand how someone could mix up the two emotions, not when love had always seemed so fleeting and hate so persistent.Â
What you didnât know just yet was that the passion involved in both love and hate often danced upon that line you were so sure was distinct to you. You didnât know that love, real love was barely an emotion at all. And you certainly didnât know that when one person truly loved another, it was anything but fleeting.Â
It was the one thing that lasted longer than hate.Â
But it wasnât your fault that you didnât know. After all, how could you? Youâd never known real love.
At least, not yet.
|||
The sky seemed to sparkle as the rare sunshine blasted through the clouds and beamed down upon the city of Brooklyn.Â
But in this moment, you couldnât fully appreciate its glory. No, not when this happened to be the day you were moving box after box of your belongings into your new apartment. The dazzling sun dared to make you collapse under its rays as you hauled out the last box of your stuff from your car. Sweat slipped down your spine as you managed to slam the trunk shut while balancing the box precariously on one hand. With a huff, you gripped the last box tightly and swiveled towards your apartment complex for the last time.Â
By the time youâd managed to get into the lobby and over to the elevator, you were practically dreaming of being able to drop down this last box into your new apartment and drop dead on your new couch. You could almost taste the beer youâd picked up on your way into the city and-
âYou have got to be kidding me!â You exclaimed, dread coursing through your frame as you read the sign taped onto the elevator doors.Â
Out of Service.
âSorry âbout that,â The concierge called, leaning on his desk and offering you an uncaring smile, âStupid thingâs been breaking down all month.â
And you havenât fixed it yet?
The angry words stayed in your head as you decided with a long sigh that the argument wasnât worth it.Â
âThatâs fine,â You gritted out, adjusting your hold on the box, âIâll just take the stairs.â
âGood luck,â The concierge wished, his tone bored.Â
Not even an offer to help you? The urge to yell at the worker was growing by the second, but you were determined to start this mission out right. Gritting your teeth, you walked over to the stairs and started climbing them without giving yourself time to hesitate. This was going to be a long journey up, and youâd rather get it over with as fast as possible.Â
By the time you reached your floor, your arms were trembling with effort and your legs were moments from giving out. You took the last step up the stairs onto your floor, letting out a sigh of relief as you paused only for a moment. Just a few more steps and youâd be at your door.Â
You took half of a step when someone slammed right into you. With the box obstructing your view, you couldnât see the person coming and they clearly hadnât seen you. You let out a yelp as you stumbled back towards the stairs behind you. In sudden panic to not tumble down them, you released the box you were holding to free your hands. Just as you were grappling for a railing or something to keep you from falling, a gloved hand gripped your arm and yanked you forward, away from the stairs.Â
You stumbled right back into the person who had just collided with you seconds prior. As you fell into their hard chest, you were bewildered since you were sure you had dropped the box rightâŠ
As you glanced up, you saw the box you had released resting easily on one of the strangerâs hands. His other was still holding your arm, and it was then that you realized that his hand was ice cold. Even with the glove on. With furrowed brows, you glanced up towards the stranger.
âThank-â Your words died abruptly as your eyes met steel blue ones burning down at you. His hair was shorter and his face was drawn into a look of slight annoyance, but it was him. Your mission had run into you before you could even move into your apartment, âYou.â
James Buchanan Barnes released your arm, his stubbled jaw clenched in the way you figured it often was. You would be lying if you said it was only your mission that made your thinking halt so swiftly, because none of his pictures did Buckyâs roguish beauty justice. He was ruggedly, painfully, hopelessly handsome, and you scrambled to collect your mind.
âDonât mention it,â Came Buckyâs low reply. His voice shot straight through you, setting your hairs on end and stirring something in your chest. With easy strength that now made sense, Bucky held onto your box with one hand, âMoving in today?â
It took every ounce of your strength not to giggle. His words were strained and almostâŠawkward. You knew he didnât talk much anymore, but it was hopelessly adorable how he was trying to make small talk. With a smile you kept restrained, you nodded.
âIn that unit right there, actually,â You replied, walking over to your door and turning back towards the super soldier, âThanks for saving my box.â
âI think I saved more than that,â Bucky quipped, his tone smooth and rough all at once. You raised an eyebrow at the man.
His arrogant charm was still intact, thatâs for sure.
âWell thanks for that too,â You responded, pulling your keys from your pocket and unlocking your door. As you shouldered it open, you held out your hands to take the box back.
You could tell he wanted to carry the box in for you, a remnant of the 40âs manners that were ingrained deep within him. You kept your hands out for the box, to which Bucky gave in swiftly. You breathed a quiet sigh of relief as he did. Had he brought it in for you, he would have seen the surveillance equipment and weapons scattered about the unpacked apartment.Â
âWell, Iâm next door if you need anything.â Bucky stepped back once you had the box in your hands, half of your body inside your open door. You smiled at him, internally cheering that this mission had already begun on such a great foot.Â
âNice to meet you, neighbor,â You announced, your trained eyes taking in the bags underneath his eyes and the tense hold of his frame, âIâm Y/N.â
He hesitated only for a moment, âBucky.â
And just like that, he had turned on his heel and walked away towards the stairs. You watched him go for a second, intrigue filtering into your gaze. He was distant and detached like you had expected, and the air of grumpiness he bore was unmistakable. But there was a softness to him that you couldnât deny. Only a touch, but it was there.
Before he could see you watching him, you fully entered your apartment and made sure the door shut behind you. Setting the box down with a huff, you settled your hands onto your hips and surveyed the controlled chaos before you. A few handguns lay strewn around, and your secured technology was piled atop the couch you so desperately wanted to drop onto.Â
But you couldnât sleep, not just yet. There was work to be done.
Out of your entire CIA division, you were the operative that Sam Wilson had tasked with keeping an eye on his lone wolf of a friend. Even though Sam knew he could take care of himself, he had asked you to keep tabs on Bucky to ensure he was safe, especially since the Winter Soldier had racked up a list of enemies just dying to exact revenge now that the world was back to semi-normal.Â
But this wasnât the Winter Soldier. This was Bucky Barnes, and even though you knew he could handle his own, you were not going to take this mission lightly. You would look out for him, make sure he didnât drop off the grid like he loved to do, make sure no rogue enemies took him down.
You would protect him, even though you knew Bucky would kill you and Sam if he found out.Â
So, you would just have to keep him from finding out.
|||
It had been almost two months since you moved in, and the most you had talked with Bucky since your first encounter was in passing on the stairs and the occasional elevator ride.Â
Of course, you had formatted your daily routine to oppose his perfectly, ensuring you would run into him as many times as passable for coincidence in a day. Even with that, though, all you managed to get out of Barnes was a nod or the occasional hello. He truly was a lone wolfâquiet, grumpy as hell, and, well, alone.
Even with his avoidance of you and all other humans in general, you managed to survey him nearly every day. It had been quiet. No intruders, no threats, no disappearances. Physically, he was perfectly safe. Mentally?Â
You shook your head at the thought. Bucky needed a life. And social interaction. Sam called you often, wondering if he was still alive considering how much Bucky dodged his texts. It was almost like he wanted to be separated. Like he was punishing himself for something.Â
That last thought rang through your mind as you started cleaning the dishes you had acquired from your dinner. As the warm, sudsy water ran across your fingers and over the pot you were washing, your brows were furrowed in concentration. If Bucky really was keeping his distance on purpose, maybe protecting him physically wouldnât be the object of this mission.Â
But you werenât trained for that. You were trained for gun fights and strategy and high-level, covert operations. You were trained to infiltrate criminal holdings and take down dangerous individuals. You were trained to attack, protect, defend, strategize.Â
Thatâs why you noticed that Bucky Barnesâ door didnât open precisely at the same time that it had every night for two months.Â
You paused in your dish-washing, setting down the pot into the sink and turning off the faucet. Letting silence cloak your apartment, you listened closely for the sound of his footsteps or the shutting of his door.Â
Nothing.Â
He could be running late, but Bucky never ran late. He never-
There was the smallest shuffle of a foot against your wooden floor.
You shot your hand out and grabbed the knife you had just washed, but you were a moment too slow. Just as your hand closed around the handle and you began to turn around, your back was shoved into your fridge and the knife ripped out of your hand.Â
Before you could even blink, Bucky Barnes had you pinned against the fridge with his metal hand around your throat.Â
Your pulse ratcheted up painfully, your eyes wide as you gripped onto his metal wrist. His grip wasnât constricting your airway, but was applying enough pressure to remind you that your life was currently in his grasp. Bucky was close to you, so close that you could see the flecks of gray in his blue eyes as well as the fury that crossed through them.
âWho the hell are you?â His voice sent a shiver down your spine. It was dark and rough and even, and it should not have had the effect on you that it did.Â
His body heat poured into you with how close he was to you, and the cold metal of his hand was a sharp contrast. Breathing was difficult, and not entirely because of his hand on your throat. There was something in the air between you, something thick and palpable. You swallowed, keeping your breathing as even as you could.
âYour neighbor,â You responded, not entirely having to fake the tremble in your tone.
âBullshit,â Bucky growled, his grip on your throat tightening the slightest bit, âYouâve been tailing me for weeks. Who do you work for?â
âJust because our schedules clash doesnât mean-â
âIf one more lie comes out of your pretty little mouth, Iâll make sure whoever hired you is the only one who knows your death wasnât an accident.â Bucky was unflinching, cold hard rage burning across his features. Beneath it, though, you could see fear. So much fear. It made your heart nearly crumble.Â
He was scared you were here to hurt him.
âIâm with the CIA,â you finally whispered, your tone no longer shaking despite his outright threat. For some reason, you knew he would not hurt you, âIâm here to watch out for you, make sure youâre safe.â
Buckyâs grip on your throat lessened the slightest bit, and his brows furrowed as he tried to make sense of why the CIA would surveil him. Not giving him a chance to speak, you continued, âAnd Iâm pretty sure the person who hired me would come here and beat your ass himself if you killed me.â
You paused, nodded your head to the side slightly and said more to yourself than him, âWell, heâd try.â
âWho hired you?â Bucky repeated, his tone less harsh than before, but just as dark.
You took a beat to consider your options, but conceded defeat with a sigh, âSam Wilson.â
Being so close to him, you could see every emotion that flashed through his face. As you watched him work through anger to frustration to annoyance, his grip on your throat loosened until his hand was just resting against your neck.Â
âUnbelievable,â Bucky grumbled, pulling his hand off of your neck and stepping back in one swift motion.Â
You let out a full breath, bringing a hand up to touch your throat where his metal hand had just been. You felt suddenly cold without his body heat by you, but it was a cold that you welcomed. If this was how he was going to thank you for trying to help him then you couldnât wait to be away from him.
You looked over to see Bucky a few strides away, his phone pressed to his ear and his hand on his hip. Before you could speak to him, whoever he was calling must have picked up, but you didnât have to guess at who it was.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â Bucky suddenly exploded, his jaw tight. Whatever Sam said didnât appease him because his exasperation only intensified.
âYou Sharon Carterâed me!â Bucky gritted out, âSteve was clueless so he didnât notice until she was on his doorstep with a gun, but did you really think I wouldnât?â
âSharon Carterâed?â You mumbled, confused. Shaking your head, you took a step closer to Bucky, âListen, if youâll just give me a minute to explain,â
Bucky stopped you, pointing in your direction, âNo, you donât get to talk here.â
Shock crashed over you as he continued to argue with Sam over the phone. Indignation flared within your chest and you sputtered for a moment, trying to comprehend the fact that he had just shushed you in your own apartment.Â
âNuh uh,â You interrupted, anger flaring hot in your veins as you stormed over to Bucky, âThis is my apartment and you do not get to waltz in here, choke me out, then tell me I canât speak.â
âYou choked her out?â Sam shouted on the other side of the phone, so loud even you could hear it. Buckyâs eyes were hard as he dropped the phone to his side and took a step closer to you. He was menacing when he wanted to be, and right now, towering over you with a quiet sort of anger, he was. If only you scared easily.
âOh really?â He nearly whispered, his anger flooding down at you. You could see him getting more frustrated the longer you stared him down right back, your chin tilted up and your gaze as leveled with his as it could be considering his height and stature, âYouâve been spying on me for weeks and now Iâm the one invading your space?â
âI wasnât spying on you, I was looking out for you. If you havenât noticed, your friend is a little more than worried about you!â You fired back. You heard Sam saying something on the phone, but it was still down by Buckyâs side.Â
The two of you were staring each other down, that same thick tension in the air. Not thinking about the consequences, you reached down and snatched the phone from Buckyâs grasp and turned it on speaker.Â
Bucky looked at you in pure shock, as if he couldnât believe youâd actually just taken the phone from him.
âYouâre on speaker now, Sam,â You informed.Â
âFinally,â Sam sighed over the phone, his tone surprisingly even and patient, âBuck, you gotta understand where Iâm coming from. You donât answer anyoneâs texts, you donât check in, and I know for a fact youâve had one or two unwelcome visitors at your door.â
âI can handle myself, Sam,â Bucky gritted out.Â
âI know you can, but you shouldnât have to! I know that itâs hard with Steve gone, so-â
âNo, you donât know.â Buckyâs voice was final, and Sam paused, not seeming to fight with his statement. Bucky stared down at the floor, his arms crossed over his chest.Â
You couldnât help but stare at him. There was a sadness in those words, one that nearly shattered your heart. Your anger towards the super soldier softened the slightest bit.
âYouâre right, I donât,â Sam conceded, âBut Iâm trying to reach out here. We donât have many people left, man. I donât want to lose another friend.â
That seemed to soften the edge of Buckyâs frustration so deeply that even the frown set into his face disappeared. In its place was resignation.Â
âIâm not here to intrude on your life,â You chimed in, making Bucky glance up to you, âIâm just here to make sure youâre safe.â
âI donât need a babysitter,â Bucky grumbled.Â
âIâm not your babysitter,â You assured, âAnd trust me, after tonight I want to spend as little time around you as you do around me. So, letâs make a deal. I keep to myself and you donât break into my place and try to kill me in my sleep.â
Bucky hesitated, his eyes surveying you closely. On the phone between you, Sam piped up, âAnd you have to answer my texts.â
Bucky groaned, running a hand through his short, dark hair before shaking his head. After what seemed like an eternity, he sighed in defeat, and you couldnât stop the small smile of victory that tugged on your lips.
âFine,â He gave in, his eyes turning up to lock with yours, âBut if I see you tailing me one more time, dealâs off.â
âNo promises,â You responded boldly, your heart pounding strangely as Bucky took a menacing step closer to you.
âThen no promises about breaking in,â He shot back. The two of you glared intensely at each other until a voice called out from the phone.
âAlright you two, knock it off,â Sam ordered, sounding so incredibly tired, âNow can I please go? You caught me right in the middle of my beauty sleep.â
You chuckled softly, a smile ghosting your lips again, âBye Sam,â
You ended the call and handed the phone back to Bucky, who you found already staring at you. You couldnât place the look in his gaze, but it seemed akin to disdain, so your smile dropped.Â
âHow did you even get into my apartment?â You asked. Bucky kept his arms crossed over his chest, making his biceps bulge against his long-sleeve Henley.
âYou tell me, youâre CIA,â He shrugged, looking too smug, âOr should I call Sam back and tell him he sent a novice to babysit me?â
âStay out of trouble, Barnes,â Was all you said back, your jaw held tight.
âHave fun with your dishes,â Bucky dryly responded, brushing past you without another word towards your door. Frustration bubbled up within your gut, and it took every ounce of your patience to not turn and yell right back at him. So, taking a deep breath, you turned and watched him open your apartment door.
He paused and glanced back over at you before he was fully out, âAnd stay out of my way. Iâm doing this for Sam, not because I need your help.â
Then he slammed your door and left.Â
Taking all of your energy not to scream, you let out another sigh and put a hand to your forehead. Gone was the distant, polite neighbor. You had failed epically, but you couldn't from here on out.Â
Bucky Barnes was going to make your life hell, and you already dreaded every second to come.
|||
Over the next month, your nods and helloâs in passing turned into grunts and, if you were lucky enough, the occasional insult you could fire back at.
In short, you loathed Barnes.Â
Looking back, you couldnât fathom how his handsome features had drawn you in when you first met. Sure, he was still stupidly attractive, but now it was more frustrating than it was something to fawn over.Â
You still did your job as best you could, but you counted the days until Sam could come up to New York and take over the mission for you.
Currently, you were mulling over ways to subtly infuriate Barnes more than you already did as you walked back to your apartment complex from your run. You tried to get out and run at a park nearby a few times a week, but considering how much you hated running, youâd missed a few weeks in the process.Â
Today, though, you just had to go. You needed to clear your head after you bumped into Barnes this morning and he informed you that somehow, the potted plant hanging on your balcony âaccidentallyâ ended up on the ground five stories down.Â
As you walked back into the cool lobby of your apartment building, you glanced up at the stairs that sat right beside the elevator. You paused for just a moment, considering if you should be healthy and take the stairs. That moment was swifter than youâd like to admit as you turned towards the elevator only to find the doors closing.Â
Against the protest of your legs sore from your run, you jogged over to the elevator, âHey, hold the doors!â
As you approached, you saw a hand shoot through and stop the doors from closing just in time. As they opened back up, you sighed in relief, an easy smile on your features, âThanks. I-â
As you stepped into the elevator, your words died. As you and the person who had held the elevator for you locked eyes, the both of you groaned.Â
âYou have got to be kidding me,â You grumbled at the same time as Bucky Barnes.
The elevator doors shut, closing you into one of your worst nightmaresâthe two of you stuck together in a confined space. The air was heavy and the tension high, an uneasy silence settling in the air. Your chest tightened slightly and your body tensed up, almost as if you were waiting for something to happen. Deciding to be civil, you looked over at Bucky and offered him a cordial smile.
âHad a good day so far?â You asked, your voice strained.Â
Bucky just shook his head, âIf you try to make small talk right now, I will throw you into the elevator shaft.â
Your smile dropped instantly, replaced by a grimace, âYou are so violent, you should really talk to your therapist about all that pent up anger.â
âI hate you,â Bucky grumbled.Â
âWell that makes two of us.â
Almost as if on cue, the elevator comes to a grinding halt. The stop is so sudden that it jolts the box, making you gasp and grab onto the railing along the wall opposite Bucky.Â
âWhat the hell?â Bucky grits out, walking up and pushing the button to your floor repeatedly. When that doesnât work, he pushes the emergency button only to have no response. That button must have been broken too.
Realizing suddenly your predicament, you brought a hand to the bridge of your nose, âThis is not happening.â
Of all the times for the stupid elevator to break down, it chose now? When you were stuck inside with the one person in the world who hated you the most?
âHello?â Bucky called out, banging on the side of the elevator.Â
âYeah, âcause thatâs gonna fix it,â You criticized, shaking your head at Bucky.Â
âWell what else are we supposed to do? The damn help button wonât work,â He fired back.
âI know you were born almost a century ago, but we have these things called cell phones and they do this magical thing where we can call for help.â You pulled out your phone and showed him the emergency call screen for show. Shaking his head, Bucky grumbled something about âinsufferableâ under his breath as you called for help.
While you were on the phone with emergency services, you explained your situation only to be told the fire department was caught up and wouldnât be able to help for another hour.Â
âAn hour?!â You exclaimed, already planning how you were going to beat the hell out of the management team for not fixing the stupid elevator.Â
âIâm sorry, thatâs the best we can do,â The emergency operator apologized. Suddenly feeling guilty for you outburst on the poor worker just doing their job, you sighed.Â
âNo, donât be. Itâs not your fault. Thanks for the help,â You amended, your tone softer this time. After hanging up, you slipped the phone into your pocket.Â
âWell, looks like weâre stuck here for a while so get-,â Your words halted abruptly when you looked up and saw Bucky opening the doors of the elevator by force, âWhat the hell are you doing?â
âGetting out of here,â He gritted back, shoving open the doors easily. You almost laughed when he was met with a solid brick wall. With a smug smile, you tilted your head at the soldier.
âYou were saying?â You sweetly taunted. He shot you a death glare as he let go of the elevator doors, allowing them to shut back.Â
âItâs gotta be an easy fix,â Bucky mumbled to himself, walking back to the wall opposite you and beginning to bang on the side of the elevator.Â
You gasped as the elevator box began to tremble under his hits and you lurched forward, grabbing his bicep to stop his assault, âStop! Youâre gonna send us plummeting straight to the basement.â
âWell then maybe Iâll get lucky,â He grunted, shaking off your hold and going to hit it again. This time, real fear hit you.Â
âIf we drop, youâd make it unscathed,â You began, and Bucky didnât even look at you.Â
âExactly, so whatâs the-â
âI wouldnât.â Your words are softer than even youâd expected, but it managed to halt Buckyâs assault on the side of the elevator. He glanced back at you, and in that moment you understood exactly what hung in the air unspoken. He was a super soldier, you were a normal human.Â
He couldnât respond before the elevator gave a sick jolt.
You gasped, your knees nearly buckling from the fall. Before either of you could react, the elevator was careening down in a free-fall. You barely had time to scream when Buckyâs strong arm was around your waist and tugging you close, pressing you between the elevator wall and his body. He held you in a death grip, locking you against him and effectively saving your life.
Luckily, just as quickly as the fall had started, it stopped with a brain-shaking halt.Â
The silence that followed was thick, and you didnât realize you were gripping Buckyâs shoulders until your mind finally was convinced you werenât going to fall to your death. Coming to your senses, you felt your body pressed tightly up against Buckyâs and looked up to see him staring down at you, his brows drawn together and the hate in his eyes missing.Â
It was then that you realized you could no longer ignore the tension that was present whenever he was near you, because in this position it was overwhelming.Â
The moment was over as soon as it had begun. You were shoving him off almost as soon as he was letting you go. Breathless, you shoved Buckyâs shoulder, âWhat the hell, Barnes? You could have gotten us killed!â
âThen you would have failed your stupid mission,â Bucky pointed out, only making you angrier.Â
âYou are infuriating,â You seethed, holding your hands out in exasperation, âAre you trying to get me to quit? Are you that insistent on shoving everyone else away?â
Bucky shook his head, his jaw held tight and his blue eyes on fire. He was staying silent, shutting down again like he often did. That only made you angrier, but a part of you yearned to get closer, to prove to him that you werenât going to leave him.
Once again, as if on cue, the elevator began to move again with a jolt. You let out a breath of relief, your anger turning into exhaustion. Just as the elevator stopped, this time at your floor, you got off first, Bucky close behind.
âFine, give me the cold shoulder,â You called out to him as you approached your door beside his. You fished out your keys and stopped, looking over at him as he ignored you and worked to open his door, âDo what you have to, but Iâm not leaving you.â
Bucky froze, turning to look at you. Something in his gaze stirred your heart, but you kept your gaze strong and unflinching, âIâm seeing this mission through, whether you like it or not.â
Then you opened your door and went inside, leaving Barnes out in the hallway, still frozen with his keys in his door.Â
|||
That night, you couldnât get to sleep.Â
You tried everythingâsleeping supplements, reading, counting sheep. Nothing worked. Your mind refused to settle down, running over your elevator encounter with Bucky over and over again. The way he seemed to stall when you said you werenât leaving him, the way he had grabbed you the instant the elevator dropped, the way you could still feel the burn of his arm around your waist.Â
The way being held by him had felt so infuriatingly right.Â
You covered your face with your pillow, willing yourself to forget what you just couldnât seem to. You didnât have to try long when the sound of something scraping on glass caught your attention. Slowly, you pulled the pillow off of your face and listened closely, the silence of your apartment settling over you like a blanket.Â
Maybe you had dreamt the noise. Maybe Bucky really was getting to you head and it was making you cr-
There it was again.
You sat up this time, your brows furrowed as you swiftly got out of bed. With silent feet, you crept to your window and pulled down one blind just enough for you to peer out into the dark night illuminated only by the haze of streetlights below.Â
Nothing. Nothing, nothingâŠthere.Â
In the murky night, your strained eyes caught a glimpse of a rope hanging down off to the left of your window. Towards Buckyâs apartment. Looking a bit harder, you saw another, and then another. Then, now that you were listening, you began to hear the soft thuds of shoes against brick and iron and glass.
Someone was going to break through his window.
Suddenly vaulted into action, you jogged out of your room, grabbing the gun you kept on your nightstand as you did. You didnât stop to consider the fact that you were only in a large t-shirt with no pants on. The only thing you could think about was Bucky sleeping next door while those intruders busted into his windows. In a matter of seconds, you were out into the hallway and pounding on Buckyâs door.Â
âBarnes, let me in,â You hissed, your voice low so as not to wake the neighbors. When there was no response, you pounded your fist against the door again. The sound mocked the repetitive thumping of your heart within your chest, its beats not only for the fight to come or the sudden burst of energy.Â
âCome on!â You pressed, in the middle of another round of knocking when the door flew open. On the other side, a very pissed and very shirtless Bucky stood, his muscular arm barring the doorway.
âThis better be good,â Bucky grumbled, his voice closer to a low growl.Â
If this were any other time, you would have taken a moment to appreciate the sculpted plane of his body or even to notice the blanket strewn on the hardfloor indicating he didnât sleep in a bed. You didnât worry about any of that, though. Instead, you shoved past Bucky as soon as that door was opened, your gun raised.
âWhat the hell are you-â
Bucky was cut off by the shattering of his window.
You had four rounds fired off before the first two intruders could set their feet in the apartment. The blasts were muffled by the sound suppressor on your gun, but they found their targets with no less force or deadly precision.Â
âShit,â Bucky cursed, the sound of his dog tags clinking as he sprinted over to the window just as the third and fourth intruders touched down. This time, these two made it down, the bullets lodging in the wall or their vests.Â
Then Bucky was on them, his metal arm catching one by the throat while he kicked the absolute shit out of the other, sending the intruder flying into the wall. The plaster cracked behind him and you shoved your gun into your waistband, no longer able to fire without risking hitting Bucky.Â
As Bucky incapacitated the intruder he had by the throat, you made sure the one he kicked stayed down. As the attacker staggered to his feet and rushed you, you dodged his clumsy hits easily and landed a crushing uppercut to the underside of his jaw. The sound of his teeth snapping together was sickening, but you were unfazed.Â
As the large attacker stumbled back, you rushed him and slid to the ground. You wrapped your legs around one of his and tugged, bringing the large invader crashing to the ground with a force that made the floor shudder. Moving quickly, you maneuvered yourself on top of the downed intruder and whipped out your gun, holding it directly at his head.
Suddenly, the apartment was silent except for the panting of both you and Bucky. You glanced up to see Bucky standing over the invader he was fighting, his bare chest heaving with breath. Probably more out of shock than exertion, you figured.
Turning your gaze down to the one pinned beneath you, you held the gun steady, âWho do you work for?â
The man smiled up at you, his teeth full of blood, âYouâll have to kill me,â
âOkay,â You said simply, moving the barrel of your gun to his shoulder and pulling the trigger.Â
The invader let out a strangled cry of pain at the nonfatal injury, his body writhing beneath you.Â
âLetâs try this again,â You gritted out, pushing the gun closer to his chin, âYou tell me who you work for, or the next shot goes into your brain.â
âHeâll kill me for telling you,â The man nearly sobbed.
âWhoâs he?â Bucky growled, staring down at the attacker mercilessly. When he didnât respond, you clenched your jaw.
âEither die now for not telling us, or die later with a chance of making it away. Your choice.â Your words rang through the room as both you and Bucky stared down this terrified intruder. A pang of sympathy ran through you that was quickly smothered because in the end, he had come after Bucky.
And for some reason, that made your vision bleed red.
âKingpin,â He finally cried, his eyes shut as his blood seeped into Buckyâs floor, âKingpin sent us to silence the Winter Soldier.â
You had to fight to keep the shock from your features long enough to whip the butt of your gun across the blubbering manâs face and knock him out. Once he was silent beneath you, you stood slowly and looked over to Bucky. His jaw was clenched and his eyes holding that same haunted look they often did.
âI had a run-in with Kingpin as the Winter Soldier,â Bucky muttered, his eyes trained down on the floor where the four intruders were, âI managed to get past his defenses, tore through them like paper. What I found nearly sent him to prison for good if Hydra hadn't cut him a deal.âÂ
The words broke over you, making your mind whir, âSo if heâs coming after you now, after all this time,âÂ
Bucky looks up at you, his blue eyes nearly knocking your bravado out, âThen that means heâs got something going on he wants to make sure no one finds out about.â
You took a moment to process the implications. Kingpin had something big going down, not that he didnât always, but now it was more personal. Now, it involved Bucky, which meant it involved you.Â
âIâll get this mess cleaned up,â Bucky sighed, running a hand through his short, dark hair, âGo back to your apartment.â
That was it? Not so much as a thank you?
You scoffed, crossing your arms over your chest, âThatâs one way to thank someone who just saved your ass.â
âYou didnât save anything,â Bucky gritted out, taking a step closer to you in that intimidating way you found he often liked to, âIf you hadnât come by, I still would have woken up and taken those guys easily.â
âAre you kidding me?â You exclaimed, gesturing around to the mess, âI had two of those guys out before you were even fully awake, Barnes! Just admit I helped you,â
He was so close to you that you could barely reach out and you would be touching his bare skin. The temptation was strong, stronger than youâd like to admit. It was like he was a magnet and you a compass, and for the life of you, even when you wanted nothing more than to run away from him, you couldnât stop yourself from being led right back into him.Â
âI said it before, and Iâll say it again,â Bucky muttered, his voice low and making your stomach take a sudden swirl. âI donât need your help.â
His eyes darted down to your lips, and then lower before returning to your gaze. It was then that you became fully aware of your lack of pants. Your cheeks heated slightly and you felt your stomach go taut from his attention, but you clenched your jaw and held your place.
âClearly, you do,â You echoed back to him, refusing to back down. After staring off at him for a few more moments, you let out a frustrated groan and stepped back, snapping the tension in the room as you shoved your way to the door.Â
âWhy do I even bother with you?â You gritted, stepping over a body, âI got up in the middle of the night and risked my life to help you and I donât get so much as a-â
âThanks,â
Buckyâs voice was so quiet that you almost missed it, but you had heard it. You froze in your tracks, your body going still except for your speeding heart as you slowly turned back around.
âWhat?â You whispered, unbelieving what he had just said. Bucky shot you a pointed glare, but let out a long sigh, some of the anger draining from his face. He looked tired, so incredibly tired.
âThank you,â He repeated, the words cutting straight through your anger, âI know I can be difficult, itâs justâŠIâm notâŠâ
He struggled with the words, his voice no longer flooded with frustration or annoyance. You spent a moment peering at the soldier, taking in the fact that he indeed had slept on the floor and noting the dog tags that hung around his throat.Â
Bucky Barnes was haunted by his past. So haunted, you guessed, that he was shoving away everyone in his life to make sure nothing bad could happen again. You still were infuriated by him, but you couldnât say that you hated him.Â
In fact, you couldnât begin to think if you ever really did. Or if maybe that hate was just a cover for the growing attraction you felt towards him, for theâŠ
Ridiculous, you scolded yourself.Â
âItâs okay,â You finally announced, your words softer than you intended them to be, âI get it.â
Somehow, you found yourself offering him a sad, soft smile that made the hard edges of his face soften.Â
âYouâre a lone wolf, I get that.â Your words made his jaw twitch, âAnd Iâm not gonna tell you how to heal. You already know that answer. So, when the time comes that youâre ready to not do all this alone anymore, Iâll be right next door.â
Something changed deep within Buckyâs gaze, something that would have made you stay if you didnât turn and walk towards the door. As you did, you felt the thumping of your heart. Your words had not just been an offer of help for this Kingpin situation. No, they had been more. An offer of help for anything, and you hadnât realized you had meant them until they had come out.
Now you were left wondering for the rest of the night when exactly you had stopped hating Bucky Barnes.
And why you had the suspicion that you never hated him at all.
|||
As the dawn broke the next morning, so did your common sense.Â
No matter how magnetizing Barnes was, you had to keep your distance unless your mission directly required you to get close. You didnât know how deep yourâŠnot hatredâŠran, but you werenât willing to find out. It could compromise this mission, and most dangerous of all, it could compromise Bucky.
You had to keep your head in the game. So, the next week or so was packed with you spending the day actively avoiding Barnes in the same way you had purposely collided with him at first. During the nights, you poured over documents and case files concerning Kingpin. You tracked his movements, hunted down where his men crawled back to after their missions, watched his cover businesses with a close, keen eye.
Kingpin was an intimidating mobster and could rule his forces with an iron fist of fear, but he wasnât necessarily the brightest businessman. He was good at covering his illegal tracks, but not great. That was why you were able to catch the whispers around the upcoming charity gala a local socialite was hosting.Â
Word was, Kingpin and his men would be at the gala to finish working out a business deal with an associate. The same business deal, you suspected, that had him lashing out at not just Bucky, but several other known adversaries to his empire across the whole of New York.Â
So if Kingpin would be there, so would you.
As you finished getting ready for the gala and stood in front of your mirror to make sure everything was perfect, your mind strayed to the super soldier next door. You hadnât seen him in over a week, not since that night where you saved his life. Even now, his apartment was silent.
You let out a long sigh and adjusted the contours of your dress and felt for the weapons beneath it. The floor-length number was deceiving to anyone with a keen eye, exposing parts of you that would normally hide weapons. Your thigh on your dominant side was almost fully exposed with a slit, and your bodice provided no way to get to a weapon if it was stored there.Â
You were a professional, though. Where you hid your weapons, no one would see until it was too late.
As you made your way out of your apartment, being sure to take the stairs this time, and then climbed into the ride you had waiting for you outside, your mind played through a million different ways this night could go.Â
Best case would be you catching wind of whatever business had Kingpin so wound up with no altercations in the meantime. Worst caseâŠwell, letâs hope you didnât have to use those weapons you so painstakingly hid.
After a drive that wasnât long enough, you clambered out into the star-lit, diamond-encrusted evening. The event hall was elegant as you walked in, decked in lavender and silver and crawling with New Yorkâs most elite. In a crowd like this, you knew it would not be hard to find a man as large as Kingpin.Â
The longer you spent canvasing the gala, the more your worst case scenario started to play out in your head. As you had feared, Kingpin wasnât here, not that you could see. Odds were, he sent someone in his place to do the negotiating. Now you had to find some way of finding that-
You gasped as your shoulder bumped right into a firm chest. You had been so busy scanning the room that you hadnât been looking where you were walking. A warm, calloused hand gripped onto your elbow to keep you stable, and the way the touch made your brain fog should have been an indicator of who this man was.Â
But you did not think of it until you glanced up, âIâm so sorry, I wasnâtâŠwhat are you doing here?â
As your gaze connected with Bucky Barnes, you saw the same flash of disbelief and then annoyance run through his crystal blue eyes.
âAre you serious, doll? You canât even give me one night out without following me?â Bucky muttered lowly, his hand still around your elbow, holding you close.Â
Your chest skipped at that word, that nickname he had called you, but you ignored it and glared right back up at the man, âYou know, and this may come as a shock to you, but not everything in my life revolves around following you,â
Bucky scoffed, tilting his head at you. Suddenly, you were fighting to overcome how stunning he was in the all black suit that he wore. His alluring gaze seemed to draw you in again, and you knew you had to get away from him.Â
âI wasnât born yesterday, sweetheart.â Bucky assured, his tone like pure narcotics to your soul.
You let out a short laugh, âTrust me, I know.â
He shook his head, licking his bottom lip as he held your arm and started pulling you towards the exit, âItâs time for you to go.â
âHey, you cannot just tell me what to do!â You muttered, pulling your arm from his grasp and coming to an abrupt halt. He gritted his jaw as he turned and looked down to you, but you beat him to the punch.
âIf youâre here for the same reason as me, then Kingpinâs men are out here somewhere carrying out a business deal that could be huge. This could be our only chance to stop it.â
âOur?â Bucky repeated, and you stared at him indignantly.
âThatâs what you caught from all of that?â You exclaimed, huffing out a breath, âLook, whatever is happening is big. If we donât stop him, who will?â
âI said before, stay out of this. Go back to Langley and report your mission as a success, and leave me alone. These men are dangerous, donât make this your fight.â Buckyâs words werenât as angry as before, there was something in them, something almost desperate.Â
You held his gaze, taking a step closer, âTrust me, sweetheart, Iâve dealt with plenty of dangerous men.â
âOh yeah?â Bucky asked, almost taunting you as he cocked his head at you.Â
Your heart was racing, your skin was on fire and he wasnât even touching you. Maybe leaving was the best idea.
You caught something out of the side of your vision, and looked over towards the dance floor. There you saw one of Kingpinâs associates youâd been tracking all week step out onto the dance floor with a woman youâd never seen before. As he pulled her into a waltz, you knew immediately that this was a business dance, not pleasure.Â
âThere, 11 oâclock,â You whispered, turning your gaze back to Bucky as his gaze flitted towards the direction you gaze. He nodded once.
âThatâs them,â He agreed.
âCome on,â You urged, grabbing his hand and tugging him towards the dance floor.
âWoah, woah, I donât dance,â Bucky protested, but let you pull him nonetheless. You cracked a half-smile as you looked back at Bucky, and you noticed the way something in his gaze shifted at the sight of your smile.
âWell tonight you do.âÂ
As you pulled Bucky out into the slow dance alongside a few dozen other couples, you noticed the way his lips tipped up ever so slightly. The sight of that smileâŠit made your heart miss more than a few beats.Â
As the two of you joined the fray, Bucky tugged you into him so swiftly that you let out a gasp. Expertly, he guided one hand to the small of your back and grabbed your hand with the other. In a matter of moments, the two of you were dancing, and you looked back up at the soldier in wonder.
âI thought you said you donât dance,â You mused. Bucky smiled, then turned his gaze to you.
âI donât, doesnât mean I canât,â He informed.Â
In that moment, with your hand in his gloved metal one and him smiling down at you like thatâŠit was enough to make you forget anything before this, before now, before him. The two of you danced, and for a moment both of you forgot why youâd joined the dance floor in the first place. Forgotten was business and missions and danger, the only thing left in the world was his hands on you as you danced.Â
You could hardly breathe as he led you around the dance floor, and you certainly couldnât take your eyes off of his. You werenât smiling anymore, but neither was he. You didnât smile because you knew. In that moment, held in his arms and dancing like the two of you had been practicing this step your entire life, like you had been made to dance together, you knew.
You knew that no matter what unfolded in the days and weeks to come, whatever became of this mission, Bucky Barnes had ruined you. For no longer could you dance with anyone else. Not when you knew this, knew him.Â
He had ruined you in this moment, and for the first time in your life you understood why the Moon never left its orbit. The Moon was so enthralled with catching even a glimpse of the Sun that it was willing to bear the black of night if thatâs what it took to bear the Sunâs rays.
Bucky Barnes had ruined you, and now you could never leave your orbit either.Â
âDoll, I-â
Whatever Bucky was going to say died as the two of you suddenly found yourselves dancing right beside Kingpinâs associate. That was the snap to reality that you needed, and you forced out1 the outrageous thoughts that had been plaguing you.Â
Thinking quickly, you pulled out of Buckyâs hold and stepped closer to him, wrapping your arms around his neck and resting your head on his shoulder. This position let you inconspicuously listen in to what it was that the associate was saying to his business partner, and Bucky quickly caught on as he brought his hands to your waist and held you close.Â
Youâd like to say that eavesdropping was the only reason you did this, but youâd be lying. Being held by him set your skin on fire, as if youâd been touched by lightning and survived. You needed this, you craved this, with his hands on your waist and his breath on your neck. But you had to focus right now, you had to hear what the associate was saying.Â
You forced your brain to switch into operative mode, forcing yourself to focus only on the conversation beside you.
â-depending on how much your boss is willing to pay. Timeliness like that is going to be extra,â The woman spoke.Â
âMoney is not an issue, trust me,â The associate assured.
âWell then,â The woman responded, sounding pleased, â1.5 for the weapons and an extra 1 for the time bump. Do we have a deal?â
There was a pause, a consideration. Your heart sped up more than it was already racing. Weapons. An arms deal that Kingpin would no doubt use to spread onto the streets, to put a tighter noose around the neighborhoods he already kept under his thumb. And over two million dollars just for weapons? This was the biggest deal youâd seen up close. This could plunge New York into a deeper chaos than it already was.
âAn even 2 and we have a deal,â The associate managed out, his tone taut.
âThen I will see you next week. And your boss had better be there, or the dealâs off,â The woman spoke with finality. And then there was silence, nothing but the waltz and the normal clamor of the gala.
Pulling back, you turned your gaze up to Bucky, whose gaze burned down on you with a certain clarity to his blue eyes.Â
âGot it?â He mumbled. You nodded, your eyes wide with excitement.Â
Smoothly, Bucky led you right off of the dance floor, offering his arm to you. You took it, making sure the two of you were walking in the direction opposite the associate. When you were mixed enough in the crowd, you spoke quietly, your tone flooded with vigor.
âSometime next week, two million for an arms deal,â You informed. Bucky let out a sharp breath, his gaze forward just like yours as the two of you walked.
âA trade that bigâŠâ
âI know,â You whispered in response, your heart thundering. You stopped walking, pulling Bucky to look at you, âI could figure out a day, time, and place. Then, together we could crash their party with an army of SWAT and CIA hiding out nearby. We could keep two mill worth of weapons off the streets and put away Kingpin for a while.â
Bucky turned his gaze from you, his jaw clenched. You furrowed your brows up at the man, you were so sure he would be all over this mission. So why did he have that look in his eye?Â
Without looking down at you, Bucky finally spoke, âLike I said, thereâs no we. Iâm taking you back to the apartment and thatâs where youâre gonna stay until this is over.â
You flinched back, so struck by his sudden change in demeanor that a shot of pain went through your chest. How could he be so cold after what happened on that dance floor? You couldnât have been the only one to feel thatâŠ
âI donât understand,â You breathed, indignation rising in your chest, âDonât you want to take out Kingpin?â
âI do,â Bucky responded, finally looking down to you with that cold, shut-off look in his gaze that you knew all too well, âBut not with you. Youâre going home.â
He let go of you and turned, walking towards the exit of the gala. Sputtering, you followed after him, storming behind him into the brisk night.Â
âAre you kidding me?â You exclaimed as he gave the valet his ticket and they ran off to grab his car, âWhat happened to working together? This is my mission, Bucky and Iâm not just going to give up on it.â
Bucky turned on you, his gaze boiling with something that wasnât quiet anger, but felt a lot like it, âI donât want your help. I donât need your help. Stay out of this one.â
You could see the valet bringing up the car and you knew that once we were inside, he would shut down. This was your last chance.Â
âWhether you want my help or not, you are getting it! It is my mission to keep you safe, Bucky and Iâm not letting you do this alone.â
Bucky shook his head at you, muttering something about you being impossible as he caught his keys as the valet threw them to him. He sauntered up to the car, opening the door and gesturing for you to get in. Cheeks hot with anger, you stormed up and got in the car, adjusting your dress as he shut the door and walked around to the driverâs seat.
Just as you predicted, the ride back to the apartments was silent.Â
You knew what he was doing. He thought this was too dangerous, and he didnât want you involved. That night in his apartment, you had seen how guarded he was to keep people from getting close. That dance, that had pushed the line and now he was not going to let you get into this mission. Frustration boiled up within you, and halfway through the drive, you finally exploded.
âThis is bullshit!â You suddenly exclaimed, and you caught the way Buckyâs hands tightened on the steering wheel.
âWeâre not doing this,â He muttered.
âLike hell we arenât,â You fired back, turning to look at him even if he kept his eyes on the road, âI know why youâre banning me from this mission and I get it, I do. But-â
âYou donât know anything,â Bucky cut in, his voice low and almost menacing.Â
You laughed without humor, slowly losing your control, âYou are impossible, impossible!â
Turning forward again, you raked your hands through your hair, âYou are so difficult. One day youâre gonna need someone, and if you keep shoving people that care for you away, youâre gonna have no one!â
The car screeched to a sudden halt.
Your stomach dropped as you looked around the surprisingly quiet street, your heart thudding.
âWhat are you-â
âGet out.â Bucky gritted.
Your heart sank instantly. You looked over at him in astonishment, your eyes wide, âWhat?â
âGet. Out.â Bucky repeated, not even looking at you, âWalk home.â
âThatâs like four miles from here, and Iâm in heels!â You exclaimed. Buckyâs jaw tightened.
âYouâre CIA, youâll figure it out.â
Your heart slammed in your chest, and the words you had spit at him moments prior burned in your chest. You had crossed a line, and you knew it. You felt it, âBucky, Iâm sorry. Iââ
âGet out of this car before I pull you out myself.â There was hurt in his eyes, and it made you want to die.
You had both said things to hurt the other, had both wounded each other.Â
As you stepped out of the car and into the night air, you realized that people could only be hurt by someone who held at least a part of them. And as you shut your door and Bucky peeled away into the night, you felt a piece of you go with him.Â
Swallowing thickly, you shook your head and pulled out your phone. You were already searching up a ride to take you to your apartment, but you walked as you did it. The cool night air was refreshing in a way, and you let out a long sigh, putting your phone down and looking around at the near-empty streets.Â
What had gone so wrong?
And so, you decided against calling a ride. Instead, you turned into a nearby, warm-looking bar and sat, drinking away your sorrows and working up the courage to make the long, lonely walk home.
|||
You were within a half-mile of your apartment, and you still hadnât sorted through the storm in your mind.
All you knew was that this was more than a mission, and it had been for a long while.Â
âI gave you one job, and you couldnât even accomplish it. One simple job.â
Your feet stalled, your head suddenly going quiet. You knew that voice. And, as you took one step closer to the alley that it poured out of and peered inside, what you saw confirmed it.
Kingpin.Â
In your muddled haze of a walk, youâd forgotten that one of Kingpinâs cover businesses was on the way back to your apartment. Now here you were, just around the corner of the mobster himself. Your eyes took in his massive frame hovering over a quivering man. A man that looked awfully familiarâŠ
You managed to stifle your gasp as you recognized it as the man that gave Kingpin up to you and Bucky when heâd broken into Buckyâs apartment.
âIâm s-sorry boss, there was two of âem. I was lucky to make it out alive,â The man stammered. Kingpin hummed.
âYouâre right, that is lucky,â He grabbed the man by his collar and hoisted him off of his feet, easily holding him in mid-air, âSo tell me, what exactly did you give up to them to save yourself?â
âN-nothing boss! I would never give you or the operation up, never! Iâm loyal,â The man pleaded.
You should go. You should hurry past and keep walking. But you just couldnât, not when the man himself was standing right there and he might give up information on the arms deal youâd caught wind of.Â
Kingpin set the man back onto his feet and smoothed out the manâs collar, âI believe you.â
The man nearly sobbed, âThank you boss, thank you.â
âBut just an insurance policy,â Kingpin said, then motioned with one hand into the darkness of the alley. Two burly guards stepped forward, armed to the teeth.Â
âKill him,â Kingpin spoke smoothly, then stepped back and held his hands together as the man begged and pleaded. Your heart thundered in your chest as the gunshot from one of the guards into the man rang through you, making you flinch slightly.Â
When the job was done, Kingpin walked up to his guards, âFilch reported back from the gala. Said he got the deal moved up to next Saturday. Make sure the streets stay quiet. We canât let it get out.â
âSure thing, boss,â The guard nodded.
Next Saturday, that gave you eight days. A smile tugged onto your lips and you were just about to move past the alley when a set of burly, vile hands closed around your shoulders.Â
âWell look what weâve got here, a little birdie listening in.â The man purred, and your stomach sank to the floor.Â
You had to get away, and you had to do it now. You thrashed against the manâs hold, slipping your hand towards where youâd hidden a small but lethal knife. Kingpin couldnât know that youâd heard. He couldnât know. Your hand was inches from the knife when another one of Kingpinâs men came around the corner and grabbed your wrists in a bruising grip, yanking them in front of you.Â
âHello there, pretty bird,â He greeted, and together the two men began to drag you into the alley. Sudden, blinding panic slammed into you and you knew instantly what you had to do.Â
If you pulled a weapon and beat the shit out of these guys like you knew you could, Kingpin would know youâd heard him and were someone to be worried about. Your best chance at making it out of this not only alive, but with the deal still set for next Saturday, you had to play dumb. You had to be a regular citizen, an innocent bystander scared of getting mugged.Â
And so you did.
You turned your anger into fear that wasnât totally falsified, and you thrashed in the menâs grips.
âPlease, let me go!â You begged, âYou can take my money, my wallet, anything you want! Please!â
Theyâd gotten you into the alley by now, and darkness wrapped around you as Kingpin himself heard your cries. He paused, looking back at you and tilting his head curiously. Your pulse thundered so fast that you thought youâd faint.Â
âWhatâs going on here?â Kingpin asked, slowly walking up to you, towering over you even when he was a few feet away.
âCaught this pretty lady walking by, looking like she wanted to come say hello,â One of the men presented.
The smell of the alley nearly made you gag, the fabric of your dress already soiled at the bottom from the puddles of unknown liquid. Real fear was pulsing through you, and you let it. You shoved down the instincts drilled into you from your time in the CIA and let yourself be a citizen, a bystander in the wrong place at the wrong time.
âPlease, you can have my jewelry, my money, anything you want,â You insisted, your eyes filling with tears that werenât entirely fake.Â
âWeâre not muggers,â Kingpin responded, his tone curious as he took you in, âWhat are you doing out here all alone, little bird?â
âMy Uber canceled on me and I had to walk home from my party, please I donât know whatâs going on!â You trembled out.Â
Kingpin studied you closely, then tilted his head and said to the men holding you, âSearch her,â
Panic was constricting your chest, and you shivered as the men began patting you down. You had to clench your firsts to keep from breaking one of their noses when one stayed a little longer than necessary on your breasts. There was a small breath of relief when they both stood back, having found none of your hidden weapons.
âSheâs clean.â
Kingpin cracked a half smile and reached forward. You flinched back as much as the men holding you would allow, but that wasnât enough. He grabbed ahold of one of your fists, raising it up to inspect. He looked back up at you, his gaze amused.
âYouâre angry,â Kingpin mused, a smile ticking onto his lips, âYouâve got more fight in you then youâre letting on.â âWell ladies with fight who are dragged into alleyways donât usually last long, do they?â You managed out, your eyes daring to meet his. To your surprise, he laughed.
âLet her go, boys. Weâve terrified her enough.âÂ
You almost sobbed in relief when the men holding you let go. It worked. He was letting you go, he didnât know. He didnât-
Thatâs when you made your first and only mistake. You let your eyes travel the alley for a moment. But that moment, no matter how short, was enough. You saw the dead body of the man who had just been shot.Â
And Kingpin knew it.
He glanced back towards the body, then slowly back to you.Â
âOh little bird, whyâd you have to go and do that? I was really starting to like you,â He sighed.
Terror like youâd never known gripped you suddenly. Dread, real and cold pierced into your belly. You began to shake your head.
âNo, no please I wonât tell anyone. I didnât see anything. I didnât-â
His massive hand gripped your jaw, cutting you off. You trembled terribly as he held your jaw and just peered at you, seeming to test you.
Finally, finally, he said, âI believe you.â
You sighed, but barely had a moment to breathe when he repeated those damned words from before, âBut just as an insurance policy,â
He stepped back, letting you go and then gesturing to his men.
âRough her up. Donât kill her, just show her whatâs gonna happen if she does decide to tell,â Kingpin stepped back into the dark alley, a smile starting on his lips, âWhich I donât think she will. Good night, little bird.â
âWait,â You shook, glanced around at his goons who now surrounded you, âWait, please,â
You had taken beatings before, you could do this. You could do this.
âBossâs orders,â One shrugged, then crashed his fist into your jaw.
Then the onslaught began, and you let it happen. You let them beat you, let them kick you so hard you thought ribs cracked, let them bust your lip and bruise your cheek. You could have them all dead in moments, but you let it happen. Youâd made it this far without blowing the mission to hell, you couldnât give yourself away now.Â
So you stayed there on the alley floor, and you took it.
|||
By the time you finally made it to your apartment and stumbled up the stairs, you could barely stand.
Your head was spinning as you struggled to get your keys into the door. By the time you finally did, you shouldered your way in and didnât even bother closing the door. You could barely think, barely see, barely feel anything besides the pain.
Youâd taken worse beatings, sure, but it didnât make this one hurt any less. Your breathing was labored as each breath made shooting pain pierce through your rib cage. Your dress was ripped and bloody and covered in filth from the alley floor. All you could taste was blood from the lip one of the men had split, and you were sure that if anyone were to see you, youâd look more like a walking corpse than anything else.
You stumbled over to your kitchen bar, gripping onto the surface for stability as you dropped your phone and clutch onto it. Your legs trembled from the effort of standing, and you didnât even bother to switch the light on considering that would require more walking. All you wanted was to gather your strength, make it to your bathroom, and get all of this blood off of you.Â
Then youâd sleep for as long as your body would let you.
At least, that was the plan until there was a knock on your slightly open door.Â
You didnât even have the strength to speak as the person pushed open the door and walked a few steps into your dark, silent apartment.
âY/N, I know Iâm probably the last person you want to talk to right now, butâŠâ Bucky paused, and the sound of his voice nearly made you sob. More than anything, more than even a bath or sleep, you wanted him to hold you. You were too tired to question the impulse.
Bucky sighed, and you could practically hear the indecision in his tone, âI turned around as soon as I forced you out, but I couldnât find you. Iâve been pacing the entire night waiting for you to come back. I overreacted andâŠand Iâm sorry.â
Heâd gone back for you. Heâd looked for you.Â
Your heart burned, and tears you didnât fight worsened your already blurry vision.
You wanted to turn and run to him, you wanted to hold him and tell him that it was alright, that you were sorry too. But you couldnât. If you let go of this counter, youâd collapse, and you knew that if you hit this floor, you werenât getting back up tonight.Â
âYou were just trying to help me, and I have such a hard time taking help and an even harder time letting people in and,â Bucky stopped with a sigh, cutting off his rant, âIâm stumbling through this, could you please just turn around and say something?â
If you werenât on the brink of passing out, youâd laugh.Â
Bucky let out a frustrated huff, âIâm apologizing here, are you even listening?â
You opened your mouth to speak, but blood came out instead and you let out a short cough.Â
âFine,â Bucky gritted, clearly trying to hold back his emotion, âIâll justâŠleave you be.â
Panic disrupted your pain and you managed to brace your weight with one hand on the counter and turn towards where Bucky was already walking towards your door. He couldnât leave. You needed him.
âBucky,â You strangled out, your voice exhausted, âW-wait,â
Bucky froze, his gaze turning back to you with his brows furrowed. Thatâs when the light of the hallway broke upon you, and his eyes widened in horror as he saw the blood and dirt and bruises.Â
You heard him say your name like a vow, but then the world began to spin and you were collapsing.Â
You barely felt the thud of the floor as you slammed against it, your body bloody and broken and giving up for the night. You heard the pounding of footsteps, felt the floor tremble as Bucky slid to his knees beside you. His hands were so gentle, so heart-breakingly gentle, as he lightly touched your bruised cheek. You watched through a blurred gaze as he kneeled over you, his jaw tight and his eyes wild.Â
âYouâre okay, doll, I got you. I got you,â Bucky promised, ever so tenderly pulling your broken body into his lap. He cradled your head with his hand, his eyes sweeping over you to take in the extent of your injuries.
âShit,â He swore, shaking his head, âIâm sorry, Iâm so sorry,â
âNot your fault,â You managed, a tear slipping down your cheek.
Bucky shook his head, his jaw clenched so tight that you saw his muscles ticking. His breaths were shallow as he caressed a finger down your cheek before gathering you in his arms as gently as he could. You groaned in pain as he stood, holding you close to himself with ease. But even despite the pain, he was holding you, and that was something you never thought youâd feel again.
âI know baby, I know,â He whispered, his words soothing you through the pain. He carried you out of your apartment, careful to close the door before carrying you into his place. You felt your consciousness slipping now that you were safe. You actually had never felt safer than when you were here, in his arms.Â
Bucky set you down on his counter, the cool material taking the edge off of the aching of your body. Before he could clean you up or bandage anything, Bucky stood close to you, his hand staying on your cheek. You leaned into it, knowing you wouldnât have if you werenât half-asleep right now.
âDoll, I need you to look at me,â Bucky urged, a cold, ferocious tone to his voice that you didnât think was for you. You managed to pry your eyes open and clash your gaze with his. In it was a cold fury, âWho did this to you?â
âKingpinâs men,â You mumbled, and Bucky stiffened, âI caughtâŠword of the deal, but heâŠhe saw me. Only way toâŠto not blow it was toâŠto-â
âPlay the bystander,â Bucky finished for you, and you nodded. Bucky shook his head, âYou stupid, brave girl.â
You managed a smile, but the movement pulled at the split in your lip and made you wince.Â
âYou can sleep now, doll. Iâve got you,â Bucky whispered. You nodded, letting your eyes flutter closed. You felt his hand caress your cheek, his fingers lingering on your skin.
Then, in the near dark of sleep, Bucky let out a defeated sigh.
âOh darling,â He sighed, then there was a press of a kiss to your brow and whispered words against your skin, âHow the hell am I supposed to let you go when this is all over?â
|||
âBucky?â
Your voice rang through Buckyâs apartment, amusement heavy in your tone. He hummed in response, his back to you as he slaved away at his small stove.
Before you already sat a fresh coffee, eggs, toast, and fruit. You couldnât help but smile. The movement pulled at your healing lip, but it didnât hurt anymore.
âItâs been two days. You donât have to keep apologizing,â You called out. Bucky turned around to you, holding a pan in one hand.
âIâm just making breakfast,â He tried, but you just raised an eyebrow at him. With a sigh, Bucky set down the pan, and walked over to the counter, settling his hands down on the other side of where you sat.
âY/N, you didnât see what I did that night,â Bucky mumbled, not meeting your gaze, âIf you could have seen how you looked, all that bloodâŠâ
Your heart strung in your chest. You slept nearly an entire day after the incident, and then spent the next day being fussed over by Bucky. You had a few bruised ribs and some nasty shiners, but nothing serious luckily. In all that time, the two of you had avoided the subject of that night besides the both of you apologizing to the other profusely.
âBuck, listen to me,â You whispered, his pained gaze finally rising to yours, âThat was a heated night, we both did and said things we didnât mean. We apologized for that, itâs behind us. But what happened to me in that alley,â
You paused hesitating only a moment before you threw caution to the wind and reached across the counter, grabbing his hand. His metal hand. His eyes widened a fraction and something changed in his gaze, something that made your heart miss a step.
âWhat happened to me in that alley was not your fault. That one was all me,â You insisted. Bucky squeezed your hand, the cool metal soothing your skin.
âBut if I had just kept you in the car, if I hadnât overreacted like that-â
âThen we wouldnât know when the deal was going down,â You reasoned, âAnd if I were you, I would have kicked me out of the car too.â
Bucky let out a low laugh, shaking his head. His thumb ran across your skin absentmindedly, making your mind muddle, âFine.â
You raised your eyebrows, a smile dancing on your lips âSo does that mean we can move on? Not that I mind you making me breakfast.â
âDonât push your luck, doll,â Bucky warned, a smile tugging at his lips. Letting go of your hand, he walked around the counter and into his living room, walking over to his coffee table where two files sat. You swiveled around on the barstool, watching him curiously.
As if he felt your gaze, Bucky spoke again, âWhile you were getting your beauty sleep in, I found where the arms deal is going down. So, if weâre gonna crash that party, we better start planning.â
A thrill went through you, and you sat up straighter. You watched as he turned and walked back to you with the files in his hand. Sure enough, he handed you one of them. You opened the front, seeing the page filled with information on Kingpin, his empire, and the arms deal. You looked up at Bucky with wide, bright eyes.
âWe?â You taunted. Bucky rolled his eyes, grabbing the front of your file.
âI can still take this back,â He warned. You smiled, pulling it back towards you and out of his grasp. His grumpy demeanor didnât scare you, nor did it frustrate you like it did before.Â
âToo late,â You said sweetly, looking up at him as he stood before your seated frame. He shook his head at you, a half smile he tried to hide on his lips as he stepped back.Â
âAlright CIA,â Bucky announced, flipping open his file, âShow me what you got.â
|||
It was Saturday night, and the air was thick with anticipation.Â
You and Bucky sat in his car, staking out the trainyard where the arms deal was set to be going down. The walkie set before you crackled to life.
âHowâs it looking?â Sam Wilson asked. You smiled at the sound of his voice, happy to have him here. Once you briefed him on what was happening, he just had to have a piece of it.
âNothing so far,â You replied, your eyes sweeping across the darkened yard packed with parked trains, âWeâve still got some time, though.â
âI have RedWing watching from the skies, so Iâll keep you posted,â Sam informed.
âI hate that damn thing,â Bucky grumbled. You pressed your lips together to keep from laughing.
âWhat was that?â Sam asked.Â
âNothing,â You answered, putting your hand over Buckyâs mouth just as heâs about to repeat his statement, âTell RedWing we said thank you!â
As soon as the radio went quiet, Bucky pulled off your hand, staring at you in indignation.Â
âYou are getting too comfortable with me,â He gritted. You shrugged, trying not to look too smug.
âSomeoneâs gotta keep you in line,â You quipped. Bucky was grumbling under his breath about something, and you were just about to ask him about it when something caught your eye in the distance. You sat up, pointing towards the left side of the yard.
âThere,â You announced, your tone serious, âYou see it?â
Bucky leaned forward, following the direction you were pointing. He nodded, reaching forward and grabbing the walkie.
âSam, two SUVs rolling in. You got âem?âÂ
âI see them,â Sam responded, his voice all business, âLooks like it's the dealers. The weapons are probably stashed in one of the train cars somewhere. Iâll run a scan, you guys get out there.â
âWill do, comms going in,â Bucky replied.
The two of you slipped the comm links into your ears, checking your respective guns before exiting the car. You both jogged towards the first train car parked in the massive yard, getting cover as fast as possible.
âBe advised, the dealers have associates fanning out through the trainyard.â Samâs voice crackled through the comm.
âCopy,â You spoke softly, your back pressed against the train, âWeâll take care of it.â
Looking over to Bucky, you nodded once at him before he led the way, gun raised as he cleared the corner. The two of you worked systematically through the yard. Sweeping out slowly in search of the associates. This place was a maze, making it ideal for deals like this. If you wanted a chance at taking the op down, you had to get these guards out.
You and Bucky paused at a break in the train, and this time you led as you inched forward and checked the corner. Seeing a guard standing watch at the corner, you pulled back and looked at Bucky. Without even having to say a word, you and Bucky worked together as if youâd been doing it for years.Â
You crouched down, holstering your gun and slipping out a knife. You took a beat to breathe before you slid forward, around the corner. The noise made the guard swivel her head, but she made the mistake of not looking down. With the deadly sharp knife, you made it to her feet before she noticed you.
Then, you whistled. A quiet, simple tone. With furrowed brows, she looked down to see you, crouched by her feet with a knife. Her brows rose and she opened her mouth to alert someone, but Bucky was on her, his hand around her mouth. Thatâs when you struck, slicing the tendon at the back of her heel.Â
Buckyâs hand muffled her scream as she dropped, and you stood in response, landing a killer blow across her temple and knocking her out. When the scuffle was over, the trainyard was silent. With a breathless smile, you looked up to Bucky.
âWe make a pretty good team,â You whispered. He shot you a pointed look.
âI donât do teams.â
You followed him as walked past the downed guard, a smirk tugging at your lips, âThatâs right. Youâre a lone wolf.â
Bucky stopped in his gait, nearly making you run into him. He turned and shot a glare at you, one that let you know you were getting under his skin. You held your hands up, showing him you were backing off the subject. He shook his head at you and kept walking.Â
âYou do make a good team,â Sam intervened, making you smile triumphantly.
âSam, I swear-â Bucky began, but you darted up, covering his mouth with your hand to silence him. He saw the guard rounding the corner a second after you did. Luckily, the guard hadnât seen you.
Not yet, at least.
Thinking quickly, Bucky grabbed you by the waist and hoisted you up into the opening of a nearby, darkened train car. You landed inside silently and turned, waiting for Bucky who jumped in a second later. Swiveling his gaze around, he noticed the same problem you did.Â
The car was full of weapons. The weapons.
Not only did this endanger the both of you should the deal start soon, it also left little room for you to hide. Bucky solved that issue swiftly as he turned and urged you against a stack of explosives, his body pressed against yours instantly, caging you into the darkness and making sure the two of you were invisible.
Or, you realized with a start, making sure you were invisible.Â
You could see just far enough to look up and see Bucky peering down at you. His body was against yours, and his face was so near to yours that you could move half an inch and your lips would be touching. His pine and whiskey scent washed over you, intoxicating you, making you forget for a moment where you were.Â
Bucky seemed to do the same as his hand moved from beside your hand and he swept a thumb against your cheek. Lightning scattered across your skin where he touched, and you nearly forgot how to breathe.Â
You wanted to kiss him. You needed to kiss him.Â
Buckyâs eyes were darting between your lips and gaze, and your heart thundered in your chest. You were sure he could feel it with your bodies pressed so tightly together, and the uptick of the edge of his lips told you he did. Your lips itched in anticipation, burning even as they were kept apart from his.Â
Buckyâs hand moved from your cheek down to rest against your throat, just as it did that day in your kitchen all those months ago. You knew that he did it to get a better feel of your pulse, and your cheeks heated in response. His lips were nearly touching yours and his hand was on your neck and you thought you might faint.
He was totally in control of you, and he knew it.
With a half-smirk that made your knees nearly buckle he whispered, âDo I always make you this nervous?â
You wanted to banter back, to shoot a petty insult at him, but you couldnât think of anything but his lips on yours. You wanted it so badly, and you could tell Bucky did too because the hand that wasnât on your throat was clenched tightly, as if he was restraining himself. You nudged your chin up a fraction, stopping just short of his lips, leaving the decision up to him. Bucky moved, and when his lips were almost touching yours-
âI found the weapons,â Samâs voice poured out of RedWing, who sat hovering right in front of you and Bucky.Â
You and Bucky jolted apart, the coast clear from the guard and the both of you coughing or clearing your throat.
âWhat?â Sam asked, his tone taunting, âDid I interrupt something?â
âSam, if RedWing doesnât fly away Iâm gonna break it,â Bucky threatened lowly.Â
âWhat, are you mad that heâs c-â
Bucky lunged for RedWing, who turned and flew away just in time. You couldnât help but smile, struggling to hold in your laughter as Bucky turned and shook his head, clearly wound up. When he saw the look on his face he pointed a finger in your direction.
âNot a word,â He commanded.Â
âYes sir,â You teased, shoving his shoulder lightly as you passed him to inspect the weapons. What you missed as you peered into the weapons crates was the way Bucky smiled at you as you passed, a real smile unlike any of the oneâs heâd given since the 40âs.
âLook at all this,â You breathed, inspecting box after box of weapons of all sorts.Â
âAnd thereâs at least six more cars just like it,â Sam informed over the comm. You shook your head, picking up a rather nasty looking bomb.Â
âWe better get a move on, Kingpinâs bound to be here at any moment.â Your words caught Buckyâs attention and he nodded, walking towards the opening of the train car and hopping out. Wordlessly, you followed. As you jumped out of the car, Bucky grabbed you by the hips and slowed down your descent, setting you safely on the ground. His hands burned on your waist, and that tension from before returned in full force.
âI had that, you know,â You informed, raising a brow at him. He just smirked.
âI know.â
Then let you go and walk away, finally letting you take in a breath. As you followed him, you shook your head.Â
This was going to be a long night.
|||
It took twenty more minutes for you and Bucky to clear out the guards without any of them reporting back a disturbance.
And, right on time, Kingpin and his men showed up
You watched as the massive, hulking man sauntered up to the center of the trainyard where the dealers, led by the woman from the gala, stood waiting. You stood pressed against a train nearby with Bucky against the one across from you. Overhead, Sam was waiting for your signal to move in.Â
It would be your job to make sure the SWAT team rolling up outside had enough time to infiltrate and secure the weapons that they could. In the meantime, you, Bucky, and Sam would ambush the deal, taking out as many operatives as you could and securing Kingpin and the Dealer.Â
But right now, your mind wasnât on the plan. No, you were stuck staring at the goons who waltzed up with Kingpin. You recognized three of them as the men who pummeled you that night after the gala. Noticing your clenched jaw, Bucky followed your gaze to the men. Understanding broke over him and you glanced over to see a certain fury flood his gaze. He looked back to you, his gaze clashing with yours.
âWhich ones?â Was all he whispered, low enough so he couldnât be heard by anyone except for the comm link. You heard the edge in his voice, and maybe it was wrong, but you loved it.
âThe two on his right and second to the left.â
Bucky nodded, staring down the three men. He looked back to you, âYou want them?â
A smile ghosted your lips. You could see the restraint in the way his shoulders were held tensely and the whitening of his knuckles on his gun. He wanted them, but he wanted you to have the choice first.
And you fell in love, right there. It began with the dance, but it was done now. There was no going back.
âShare?â You offered, and Buckyâs lips tipped up in a smile.
The two of you turned your attention back to the deal, straining enough to hear the conversation flowing from Kingpin and the Dealer who met in the middle.
âIâm not seeing my weapons,â Kingpin noted, his hands clasped before him. The woman smiled.
âThe money first. Then youâll get your weapons.â
Your hands tightened around your gun, waiting for Kingpinâs next move. He surveyed the Dealer before nodding, turning back to his man and motioning. That was it, this was your chance.Â
âNow,â You whispered, and instantly the sound of bullets from somewhere to the right blasted through the air.
Samâs distraction.
The Dealer and Kingpin snapped their gazes towards the sound.Â
âWhat the hell-â
Thatâs when you and Bucky swept in, guns raised and bullets flying before the group knew what was happening. Chaos broke out, but every time someone strayed from the center to flee into the trains, Sam was there to guide them back.Â
The scene was a flurry of bullets and knives, of yelling and screams, but in the end it was you and Bucky who were left standing amongst the group of downed guards. Of course, there were a few left standing besides Kingpin and the Dealer, one of which happened to be one of the men who beat the shit out of you after the gala.
You did not miss how one of the other men whoâd beat you wasnât just unconscious nearby, but his neck was twisted at a wrong angle with Bucky standing nearby. The last of three was lying somewhere in the mess, shot and bleeding out.Â
Silence settled over the scene as Sam slammed down on the top of one of the train cars, gun raised. Bucky stood by the Dealer, and you by Kingpin. The two criminals stood silently, their hands raised in submission.Â
âHereâs whatâs gonna happen,â You announced, keeping your gun pointed at Kingpin. He snapped his gaze to you, and surprise flickered through it followed by a sort ofâŠadmiration that made your skin crawl, âA SWAT team is closing in on the weapons now, so the two of you are going to call off anyone else you have stationed and come with us, without a fight preferably.â
âLittle bird,â Kingpin greeted, making your pulse spike. You didnât want to look at him, but you did anyway, and you hated the way you shook as you did, âItâs not often Iâm surprised, but I gotta say, youâve got me speechless here.â
You gritted your teeth, but it was Bucky who called out âClearly not speechless enough,â
Kingpin laughed, seeming almost at ease. He started to lower his hands and you took a step closer, your gun held strong before you.
âKeep your hands where I can see them!â You ordered.Â
âOkay, okay,â Kingpin complied, raising his hands up, âBut I just want to say, you really shoulda thought this out more.â
You furrowed your brows, âWh-â
You couldnât even get the words out when three of the nearby train car doors slid open, and guards poured out. Your heart shot into your throat, and you didnât even have the chance to shoot when twenty guns were pointed at you and twenty more at Bucky. You shot a nervous glance towards Bucky, who shared the same look.Â
âSam, go,â You whispered, and he flew off without another word. He needed to get the SWAT team in here now, or you and Bucky wouldnât make it long. On the bidding of Kingpinâs army, you and Bucky set your guns down slowly.Â
âAlright,â Kingpin announced, sighing as if this were just another Saturday night, âNow hereâs whatâs really gonna happen.â
He walked up to you, and off to the side you saw Bucky immediately lunge forward towards him. He couldnât make it far before Kingpin pulled out a gun of his own and pointed it at your head.
Bucky froze.
âLeave her alone,â Bucky ordered, his voice dark and menacing.Â
âNow itâs getting fun,â Kingpin mused, ignoring Bucky completely and stepping closer to you. You clenched your fists to hide the way they shook.Â
âYouâre gonna hop up to this train car here and get my weapons out, make sure theyâre what I wanted. Then, youâre gonna call off the SWAT team, and weâre gonna walk out of here,â Kingpin said simply.Â
âNot happening,â You gritted out.
âFunny, I donât remember giving you a choice,â Kingpin sighed before grabbing your arm and looking to the dealer, âWhich one has the weapons?â
She smirked, pointed at the train car nearby Bucky. It was torture to be dragged past him and not be able to touch him. Not for lack of trying, either. As you went by, he made a break for you, shouting your name. It took eight men to restrain him.
Eight men, thatâs how many it took to hold him steady.Â
And, you figured he was holding back since there was a gun to your head.Â
âOh, and package the soldier up. I want to have a fewâŠwords with him later.â Kingpin ordered, and panic blinded you. You reared back helplessly, struggling against his iron grip as you had to watch the men try to subdue Bucky and get him into handcuffs.Â
Your panicked gaze met his, and all you could do was pray Sam was close with the SWAT team. You couldnât rely on that, though. Kingpin was going to kill you and then Bucky.
You could die, so long as Bucky didnât.
A plan began to spin in your head as Kingpin shoved you up into the train car.Â
âNow, grab a gun from in there and show it to me,â Kingpin ordered, but then gave you a knowing smile, âAnd donât try anything, or Iâll have a bullet in your boyfriendâs head.â
âOn our way!â Sam called through the comm, but you were running out of time. The men were already hauling away Bucky, and you had to act fast.Â
Turning into the dark train car full of weapons, you tried to lift a box and pretended to fail. Turning to look down at Kingpin, who still stood on the ground, you gritted, âI canât get it. Itâs too heavy.â
Maybe it was his built-in trust of you from your encounter that night after the gala, or maybe it was because he thought you were under too much emotional duress, but he believed you.
He bought it, and he hauled himself into the train car for everyone to see.
âYou better not be-â
Before he could speak again or anyone could react, youâd pulled the bomb you picked earlier off of your belt and pulled the pick. Gasps and shouts rang out through the yard as you held the live explosive in your hand and made sure you stood between Kingpin and the exit of the train car.
âY/N NO!â Bucky shouted, his voice cracking. With a bare pull of his arms, the cuffs on his wrists snapped and he made a move for you.Â
A handful of guns were pressed into Buckyâs head, stopping him cold. In response, you held the motion-induced explosive tighter and pushed it further towards Kingpin, who had backed as far as he could against a stack of crates. Terror was clear across his face, which brought a sick sort of delight.
âYou shoot him, and I drop it,â You announced, and once again the yard plunged into silence.Â
Anyone who could see the situation knew you had the upper hand. If anyone killed you, the bomb would hit the ground and kill Kingpin. If Kingpin tried anything on you, youâd drop the bomb and kill the both of you. You were locked in a stalemate, and now you were going to win.
âNow, put your guns down.â Your voice rang through the trainyard, but no one acted. You lifted your brows and nodded, turning your head towards Kingpin. Panic flared in his eyes and he shouted, âGUNS DOWN! Put your damn guns down!â
You turned your head and watched as everyone did as they were told. Your eyes snagged on Bucky, who had a desperate look on his face. He shook his head, but you ignored his silent pleas.Â
âYou, the Dealer and all your forces are going to stand down. Youâre going to wait patiently for SWAT to get here,â You lifted your chin, âOr Iâll drop this and we both go.â
âYou wouldnât,â Kingpin stuttered.Â
âYou really want to call my bluff? Go ahead, end your criminal empire in one moment of stupidity,â You dared.Â
Kingpin took a moment to survey your gaze before he shook his head, âYouâre crazy.â
You didnât miss a beat.
âThe things you do for love.â
Thatâs when you heard the rustling of gear and looked over to see the SWAT team storming in, guns raised and shouting at the Dealer and all of the assorted criminals throughout the yard. Taking in a trembling breath, you looked back at Kingpin.
âGame over, little bird,â You lifted your chin, and Kingpinâs eyes flared.
âThis isnât over,â He assured.
âSure it isnât,â You replied easily. Well, as easily as you could with a live bomb in your grasp.
You heard the clanging of the train car and looked over to see Bucky inside, his eyes deadly and his jaw clenched tightly as he grabbed Kingpin.
âOut,â Bucky growled, throwing him to the ground outside. Officers were on him instantly, but Bucky wasnât paying attention, instead, he was on you.Â
âBucky, stay-â You warned with a trembling voice, stepping back to keep the bomb from him. Bucky wasnât listening to you, though, He cut you off and cupped your cheeks.
âWhat the hell were you thinking? You could have died!â Bucky nearly shouted, but you didnât miss the way his voice shook.Â
âHe was going to take you, and I couldnât let him do that,â You whispered, tears gathering in your eyes.Â
âSo you pulled a bomb on him?â Bucky pushed. A tear slipped down your cheek and Bucky wiped it away, shaking his head at you, âDonât ever do that again, donât ever risk your life like that for me again.â
âNo promises.â Your voice was trembling badly, and your hand was clenched so tightly around the bomb that your fingers hurt, âBucky, Iâm scared.â
You heard Sam call for a bomb squad in the distance, but you didnât tear your gaze from Bucky. He pressed his forehead to yours, âI know, baby. But youâre gonna be alright.â
âWhat if I drop it?â You whispered, only allowing your fear to be heard and seen from Bucky.Â
âYouâre not gonna drop it,â Bucky assured, reaching forward and holding the explosive over your hand.
Buck, donât-â
He held fast, closing both of his hands around yours and the bomb, âYouâre gonna be okay. Iâve got you.â
âSam, how long on that bomb squad?â You called out, another rogue tear burning down your cheek.
âThey should be here any minute.â Samâs reply made the tension in your chest ease slightly, and as if on command, the bomb squad came running up to the train car.
Buckyâs hands were solid around yours, and his gaze was unflinching and unafraid. He had you. That thought made your heart rate slow. He had you, he had you.
âSo what do you have here?â A lady asked, jogging up and hopping into the train car, looking down at the explosive. She hummed, nodding before reaching into her kit. You looked down to watch her work, new fear ripping through you.
âNo, just look at me,â Bucky ordered, making your gaze snap up to his. You nodded, doing your best to hold his gaze as the woman worked on the bomb.Â
âYouâve got pretty eyes,â You murmured, the fear making your inhibitions lowered, âI donât think I ever told you that.â
Buckyâs lips edged up into a smile, âWell, I figured you thought so considering how fast your heart was beating in that train car a few minutes ago. Or were you thinking about something other than my eyes?â
His charm worked perfectly, and you couldnât help but laugh.
âLook at us,â You mused, glancing down at the bomb for a moment before looking back up to Bucky, âA few months ago you wanted to kill me, and now weâre holding a bomb I pulled to save your ass, again.â
âNo, I still want to kill you sometimes,â Bucky amended, but the words held no merit.Â
âAlright,â The bomb squad lady said, grabbing onto the underside of the bomb, âYou can let it go now. Iâve got it.â
Your smile faded and you locked your gaze with Buckyâs again. He pulled one of his hands off and your grip on the explosive tightened. You shook your head slightly.
âItâs okay,â He murmured, nodding to you, âLet it go.â
Bucky slid his hand that was left on the bomb to yours, intertwining your fingers and slowly pulling your hand off. Before you knew it, Bucky had managed to pull your hand off the grenade. In its stead, Bucky held your hand tightly, pulling you instantly into his chest.Â
You let out a shuddering sigh of relief, leaning your head on Buckyâs shoulder. Slowly he pulled back, keeping your hand in his, âCome on, letâs go.â
You nodded, your fear ebbing as the two of you jumped down from the train car. In an instant, Sam was at the two of you, nearly knocking you over with a hug. You laughed, letting go of Buckyâs hand and hugging Sam back.Â
âYou are insane!â Sam exclaimed, letting go of you and shaking his head, âAbsolutely insane.â
You smiled, âThanks,â
Sam laughed, shaking his head as he walked over to Bucky, âSo not a compliment.â
After he checked in with Bucky he turned and faced the two of you.Â
âGood work, guys. Glad to see youâre not killing each other here.âÂ
âYet,â You and Bucky happened to say at the same time.Â
Sam smiled, âI better be off, Iâve got a mission I left to help out here.â Pausing, he looked over to you and gestured to Bucky, âTake care of him?â
You smiled, nodding, âAlways.â
The two of you said your goodbyes as Sam turned and flew off. With a long sigh, you turned and began to make your way back to Buckyâs car.
âWell, I donât know about you, but I could go for some food right now.â You announced.Â
âWait,â Bucky stopped you, grabbing your arm and pulling you around to face him, âWhat you said back there to KingpinâŠdid you mean it?â
For a moment, you considered playing dumb and asking what he meant. But you knew what he meant, and he knew you did. You had inadvertently said that you loved him, and because of the bomb situation you almost thought youâd make it out without having to confront it.
You held Buckyâs gaze that was searing into you, and suddenly you were overcome with that same sensation to kiss him as before. With him standing this close to you and after what youâd just been through together, it took all of your strength to hold back. The tension in the air between the two of you as he waited for your response was maddening.
âWell, I did nearly blow myself up for you so take that as you-â
âYou are infuriating,â Bucky huffed, tugging you closer so that your body was flush against his. Your joking ended immediately, your pulse flickering wildly as his lips danced just out of reach of yours. His blue eyes were dark as he stared down at you, each of you daring the other to make the first move.
Your lips brushed against his as you spoke into the silence, âI meant it.â
And then his lips were on yours. His arm was around your waist, pulling you tight as his other tangled into your hair. This kiss had been brewing for months, and you could feel it. Lightning danced across your skin as he kissed you desperately, in a way that made your arms tighten around his neck to keep yourself from falling. He nipped at your bottom lip softly, then pulled away and moved to hold your face in his hands.Â
For a long while, Bucky just stared at you with a soft smile playing on his lips. You smiled, still dazed from the kiss.Â
âWhat?â You asked.Â
He ran a thumb across your cheek tenderly, âI was just trying to think back to when things changed between us. ButâŠbut I think Iâve loved you from the moment I met you.â
Your smile widened and you surged forward, kissing him again. Pulling back, you gazed up at him with an amused glint in your eyes.
âAnd when you were choking me in my kitchen, threatening to kill me, that was you showing your love for me?â You asked.
Buckyâs grin turned suave and playful as he threw his arm across your shoulders and walked with you towards his car, âWell, you seemed to like it enough in that train car.â
Your cheeks heated and you scoffed, slapping his muscled chest as the two of you walked.Â
âJerk,â You laughed out, and he held you closer to him with a smile.
âI love you too.â

The Dangers of Tennis Skirts
request: based on this. pairing: spencer reid x reader summary: âyou know, reid,â you said, âguys ask girls out on a date before they bury their faces into their thighs.â genre: fluff word count: 817 author's notes: this is my first ever blurb! i wrote this to practice writing blurbs & writing this was so fun. also, i hope anon doesnât mind that i wrote this with a fem!reader in mind & reader noticing spencer getting flustered. i just think it would be a lot funnier that way. thank you for this cute request, anon! i got to practice writing blurbs and it's about shy!spencer? a win for me! i hope you'll love this ⥠also posted on ao3 (spencereids).
âREID, YOU OKAY?â Morgan asked the younger male.
Despite his blatant intelligence and many talents, Spencer Reid is just a man. And just like any hot-blooded guy out there who is interested in exploring the curves and dips of a womanâs body, Spencer canât help but have his IQ slashed down to sixty, or whatever it was Emily said before. And unfortunately for him, hiding the effect of seeing you in a short, white tennis skirt for the first time is not one of Spencerâs talents.
âYep,â Spencer said, popping the p as he tried to stop his oglingâcue the word, stopâbut failed magnanimously, eyes wide, pulse racing, and mouth gaping.Â
Morgan frowned at the doctor's weird behavior. Usually, when asked how he is, Spencer would go on tangents that would be relevant to the conversation at hand. A single Yep! would not suffice for the boy genius.
Something is going on with him, Morgan thought.Â
Worried but still weirded out by Spencer, Morgan followed his line of sight and guffawed at what he found. You just entered the bullpen in a fluffy beige sweater, a white tennis skirt, and with your hair tied with a white ribbon.Â
"Oh, pretty boy," Morgan exclaimed between chuckles. "You are hopeless!"Â
"Who's hopeless?" Garcia, who just sat on one of the chairs available, interjected.Â
Morgan continued chuckling and motioned to Spencer, whose eyes were about to fall out of their sockets, and then pointed at you just entering the area. Garcia gasped in happiness. She always thought you and boy genius would make the perfect couple.Â
And like Spencer, Garcia has many talents. One of which is playing Cupid.
Making the most out of Spencerâs inattentivenessâbusy staring at youâGarcia made quick work of calling you over to talk about your cute outfit.
âHey, Y/N!â Garcia blurted out. âI love LOVE your outfit. We all do.â
She made sure to gesture at Morgan and definitely at Spencer. âRight, boy genius?â
This interrupted Spencer in reverie and unfortunately for him, heâs not the most subtle when heâs back from being lost in thought.
âAre you okay, Reid?â You asked, none the wiser at the obvious display of Spencer getting distracted by your outfit, specifically, your skirt.
Spencerâs eyes widened at your concern. Frightened youâd find out the reason he was dazed was because of you, he instantly stood up from his seat, failing to notice that an electric cord was stuck beneath the chair. And with his quick scrambling, coupled with the fact that his reflexes are akin to that of a toddler just learning to walk, Spencer ended up falling face-first into the floor.
At his clumsiness, Morgan snickered loudly, earning him a slap from Garcia with a matching, âYou are not helping at all!â And a glare from you to which he raised his arms in defeat. You held your palm out for Spencer to reach, who was busy trying to dust off his pants, not noticing it was you helping him up until he looked up.Â
Aside from talents, Spencer was blessed with the gift of hard luck. And unfortunately for him, it seemed his hard luck always tripled in front of a pretty girlâyou. Because instead of looking into your eyes when he looked up, his eyes landed on the plush softness of your thighs, which you havenât failed to notice.
Spencer never wanted to dig a hole and jump in it so badly before today.
You were already giggling, cheeks reddening at the thought of your effect on the genius. Imagine reducing a cute guy with an IQ of 187 and an eidetic memory to a clumsy mess on the floor. Quite flattering, especially if he happened to be the guy you have been crushing on for quite some time now. Not that he knew that, of course. But a girl has gotta take her chances, right? And what better way to tease the hell out of your crush than when he was face-first into your thighs?
âYou know, Reid,â You said coolly, âGuys ask girls out on a date before they bury their faces into their thighs.â
Spencerâs eyes bulged out even more while Morgan was belly laughing at this point, Garcia right behind him, giggling in delight.Â
âI-I uh,â Spencer began to ramble, trying to come up with a tangent that could get him out of this mess, failing to remember that just like him, you were gifted with many talents as well. And that is making the most out of an unfortunateânot unfortunate, your crush is face first on your thighs!âsituation.
âSorry, Spence,â You chortled, ruffling his hair. âYouâre not getting out of this one. We are going out after this case.â
This got Morgan falling out of his chair in laughter, Garcia giggling along, and Spencerâs pinkened cheeks resembling an actual tomato with their redness.
