Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike is a beneficiary of the struggle for democracy by him, Mike Ozekhome, and other freedom fighters during the military junta. Sani said Wike would not have been a local government chairman, state governor, and Minister if not for the struggle by him, Ozekhome, and other freedom fighters during the military era. He was reacting to Wike’s recent remark questioning how much significance his presence made to make Nigeria better when he was a senator. Speaking at the Nigeria Annual Lecture and Gold Prize Award, 2024, an event organised to celebrate Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, Sani called on President Bola Tinubu to wake up and do what is right because Nigerians are suffering. But Wike questioned Sani for making such calls, asking that the former lawmaker tell Nigerians his key achievements in all the years he spent at the national assembly as a Senator. Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against repeating the mistake of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari in the area of appointments. Sani said, unlike Buhari, Tinubu’s appointments should be based on competence. Featuring on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former lawmaker accused Buhari of nepotism while in office. Stressing that nepotism was at its peak, Sani wondered why some Ministers were in office for eight years under Buhari. BREAKING: Organised Labour suspends strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, have suspended the nationwide strike. This is to give room for uninterrupted meetings with the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage. This was confirmed by TUC chairman, Festus Osifo on Tuesday. Atiku Returns To Nigeria Ahead Of Crucial PDP NEC Meeting

Ahead of the much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President and presidential candidate of the party in 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has returned to Nigeria. Atiku, who had been out of the country for weeks, returned in the early hours of Tuesday, a source told LEADERSHIP. The Ambassador Illiya Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP was pressured into fixing the NEC meeting for April 18, having refused to hold the meeting for over one year. The NEC, the second most influential decision-making organ of the party after the national convention, is expected to meet every quarter as stipulated by the party’s constitution. The anticipated NEC meeting, according to party sources, is shaping up to be a make or mar one for the party. Atiku, who is regarded as de facto leader of the party, being the presidential candidate in the last elections, is expected to spearhead other meetings ahead of the NEC meeting. This comes as agitations have mounted over the poor management of the party against the backdrop of allegations that the party was being controlled by external forces as alleged by former Benue State governor, Senator Gabriel Suswam. Also, the North Central zone has called for Damagum to relinquish the acting national chairmanship seat and allow the emergence of a substantive national chairman from the region where the party originally zoned the position to in 2021. Recall that former Senate President, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, from Benue State (North Central) emerged national chairman at the party’s last convention. But Damagum, deputy national chairman (North), who hails from Yobe State (North East), was made acting national chairman in 2023 after a court order removed Ayu from office. Although the agenda of the NEC would be defined by the NWC, sources told LEADERSHIP that the NEC meeting might also decide on what actions to take on “party leaders who have continued to undermine the party.” Recall that some governors and party chieftains openly worked against Atiku as PDP presidential candidate in 2023 and also recently reiterated their resolve to support President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Reports emerged on Monday evening that Wilcox is set to move to Old Trafford and take up a technical director role, stepping down from his position as director of football with the Saints. The Championship side are thought to be furious with the timing of the move, as they chase promotion to the Premier League and there is a disagreement over the amount of compensation they would be due if Wilcox does leave. Manchester United are thought to have offered an amount worth a year’s salary which they believe triggers a release clause, but Southampton are disputing that. Tinubu’s Wife Pushes For National Identity Over Ethnic Divisions

Lady, Remi Tinubu, has made a passionate call for Nigerian youths to embrace their national identity and promote unity, transcending ethnic and cultural divides. At an event hosted at the State House in Abuja, where she received the executives and members of the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Mrs. Tinubu emphasised the importance of prioritizing “Nigerianness” over narrow ethnic or cultural affiliations. “We should promote our ‘Nigerianness’ rather than ethnicity or culture. Yes, we are not saying we should not recognize these, but we should realize and promote our togetherness. We are first and foremost Nigerians. We need that place of unity,” the First Lady in a statement by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi stated emphatically. “There is a need for youths to have role models who will teach you what to do and how to do them, just as the Bible talks about in Titus 2 and 1 Timothy that the older ones should teach the younger ones,” she added. The first lady also admonished the guests to share the message of investing in lives. She said, “Technology is very good but we must let the youth know that they should use it positively”. She shared some of the programmes of her office through the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI, which include the Unity Fabric competition with a N25m prize money and the Every Home A Garden competition with a prize money of N20m. Senator Tinubu also prayed for the guests and Nigerian youths in general. Earlier in his remarks, the national chairman of YOWICAN, Enwere Belusochukwu applauded the various initiatives of the First Lady especially through the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI. He also asked for her inputs on the proposed quarterly Breakfast Prayer Meeting of both Christian and Muslim youth and also on the proposed National Christian Youth Resource Centre which will include a skill acquisition centre among other facilities. She was later presented with an Easter card and the uniform of the association by the executives. No ‘Sacred Cow’ In Anti-corruption Fight, EFCC Boss Declares

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, has assured that the anti-graft war that he is leading will continue to be broad-based, holistic and unsparing of anyone linked with any form of economic and financial crimes. He gave the assurance in Abuja at an Anti-corruption concert organised to create more awareness and public involvement in the fight against internet crimes. EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said the chairman pointed to the strides being made since he assumed office a couple of months ago and reaffirmed his commitment to an all-embracing, fully-integrated war against corrupt practices. According to him, ‘’We will not spare anyone.  We will not spare the mega thieves.  As we are doing the mega, we will also do those at the lower end.  In the last two months, we have arraigned two former governors.  So, it is not true that we are only focused on internet fraudsters. Of course, internet fraud is bad enough but our focus is on every form of economic and financial crimes.“ He cautioned youths against indulgence in internet-related offences,  noting that the consequences of being convicted for such crimes are grave. “Youths need to know that being ex-convicts has career limitations.  Ex-convicts can’t run for public offices, the stigma alone is even terrible.  So,  I urge you to avoid internet crimes by all means.  Your future is more important than any immediate gains from such crimes”, he said. The EFCC boss further said that the commission under his watch is deeply interested in giving youths a glorious and sustainable future and to this effect,  “a Cyber Crime Research Centre is being planned in the New Academy of the EFCC.  The centre will involve youths in in-depth research about the issue of cybercrime.  Their energies will be deployed towards profitable engagements.” He further charged the youths to embrace hard work and diligence, stressing that “the path of success is the path of hard work and dignity.  There is dignity in labour. Nigerian Economy Records $1.5bn Inflow Post – CBN MPC

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says the inflow of over $1.5 billion into the economy over the past few days indicates that its monetary policy efforts are working positively.  The bank’s acting director of corporate communications department, Mrs Hakama Ali, made the assertion in a statement issued on Friday. She said data available to the bank indicated that the inflows resulted from the bank’s concerted effort to stabilise the foreign exchange market. Mrs Ali said the Naira has also continued to record gains in the Autonomous Foreign Exchange market as it traded at N1,309/$1 as against N1,611/$1 in the second week of March 2024. She said Thursday’s rate signifies that the Naira was headed in the right direction, assuring that the Olayemi Cardoso-led CBN would remain committed to ensuring the stability of the market and the appropriate pricing of the Naira against other major currencies worldwide. The CBN’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) announced a two-percent increase in its benchmark rate from 22.75 percent to 24.75 percent on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.  The development comes on the heels of the CBN’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) announcement of a 200 basis points increase in its benchmark rate, from 22.75 per cent in February to 24.75 per cent on March 26, 2024, amounting to a record 600 bps in one month. The move, according to experts, is aimed at stemming the tide of the inflationary trend which reached a record at 31.7 in February while assuring investors of a viable and sustainable economic environment.
