here is me figuring out the set up for the one scene in carrying the banner where they are all on the scafolding

top left : tommy boy and elmer

top middle: Jojo and race

top right: kid blink and specs

middle left: Albert and buttons

direct middle/middle middle: crutchie and jack

middle right: smalls and finch

bottom left: Ike and mike

bottom middle: sniper and romeo

bottom right: Henry and mush

now for what they are doing (this is the hard part)

tommy boy is tying his shoe while Elmer is putting his hat on

jojo is adjusting his hat and suspenders and race is putting his vest on

blink is putting on his hat and specs is putting on his suspenders

albert is doing something (wiggling???) with his vest and buttons is combing his hair

crutchie is kinda just there, adjusts his vest, while jack (very aggressively) ruffles his own hair

smalls puts their vest on and finch plays with his rag(??)

mike and Ike both put their vests on then realize they took the wrong hat, so Ike playfully flips mike's to him while mike shoves Ike's hat to his chest

sniper adjusts his clothes and romeo puts his hat on

henry puts his vest on, grabs both him and mush's hats and puts his on then wips mush's around before tossing it in the air and mush catches it

(I have rewatched this specific scene over 25 times in a row to figure this out)

in manhattan, when one newsie gets sick, they all get sick. and they're fucked right now. "it ain't my fault!" jojo shouts. "buttons got me sick!" everyone rounds on buttons.

"yeah, like i fuckin chose to be sick," he mutters. the crowd of sick newsies starts yelling at him.

"everyone shuddup!" jack shouts from his bed. "i got a headache."

"someone gimme some help out here!" tommy boy calls from outside. specs, blink, and skittery go to give him a hand with whatever it is.

"what happened?" all the newsies hear snatches of conversation from outside.

"-in the street."

"-when to stop-" blink and skittery enter, holding an unconscious race between them. "ay, mush, move it." they toss race onto a bed.

"what happened to him?" ike asks quietly. there's a small cut on race's forehead that's bleeding.

"oh, he passed out in the street," skittery explains. "he's sick and wouldn't take the day off. never was very smart."

"now he's dead," blink adds.

"what?" a shout goes up from some of the younger ones until mush smacks blink around the head and tells everyone blink's kidding.

"they're kids, stop scarin them," mush orders him. "also, race being sick means only one thing. someone has gotta go tell spot conlon."

"yeah, that ain't scary," blink mutters. "uh, boots, go to brooklyn and tell spot he's got a sick boyfriend." boots heads off dutifully.

the next hour is a mess. all the newsies fret over race, who sleeps the whole time. and then everyone goes silent and dumbstruck when spot enters.

they're used to cold, intimidating, angry spot. not a caring spot. not a spot who immediately runs to race's side and starts checking on him.

spot presses his hand to race's forehead and then hugs him tight, pressing kisses to the top of his head. "ay!" crutchie shouts. "everyone hit the beds and give them some space!" race wakes up soon enough, with a worried spot sitting bedside.

"race!"

"whatcha doing here? i's just sick. ain't dying or nothing." spot kisses his forehead and stares at him.

"ya passed out in the street. gotta take it easy."

"when one of us gets sick, we all get sick. i ain't dying, spot, i promise."

"you need food." race shrugs.

"i ain't hungry."

"race. listen to me. you need food, you're sick."

"i'll throw it up."

"i will shove it down your throat if you don't eat the food i bring ya."

"spot-"

"tony. shut up. i's getting you some chicken soup. don't argue." race watches him walk out, smiling a little dopily.

all the newsies start hooting and cheering, whistling at race.

"alright, alright!" race shouts. "i got a headache."

If I had nickel every time in newsies dance break they randomly yells “Specs!” I’d have… oh my god there’s so many nickels what the hell

michael headcanons >:)))

he actually does wear his hoodie everyday like a cartoon character, he just washes it

gels his hair pre-squip, stops during squip, and ends up sticking with no gel post-squip

is actually insanely petty and holds grudges for pretty much anything, like oh you stole my orange in fourth grade? good luck getting my forgiveness i’ll hate you till my grave. oh you need this soda to save the world and prevent a mind robot apocalypse? apologize and then we’ll talk.

had a small crush on pre-squip rich in freshman year, and assumed he just switched schools after that

only smokes weed like, a little less than once a month, he just got caught once and it became his thing at school

has genuine stage fright, like you will never catch him up on a stage unless it’s robot apocalypse related. he’s not even just afraid of performing, but being Near a stage gives him goosebumps, even before the squip (this is a personal favorite hc of mine)

really likes kicking down doors when appropriate, he just thinks it adds a dramatic flair

when he wakes up he just, doesn’t put on his glasses yet sometimes. like sometimes he just prefers to go through the morning completely blind and bumping into furniture

100% talks to himself when he thinks no one can hear him

i like to imagine half the time he’s at school he’s completely monotone and deadfaced but his inner voice is just going crazy

is a terrible actor when he’s trying to act, but if he’s trying to get out of a real situation he could probably cry on command

back to the grudges - when michael mentioned everyone but jeremy forgetting his birthday i think that includes his moms, so i have a hc that it hurt their relationship after that

michael has an older brother, different variations below

1 - he’s got one older brother who he wasn’t close with, who was squipped and in a mental hospital

2 - one where instead of having a distant older brother he’s got an older brother in college who he looks up to like crazy and is super close with (favorite)

3 - one brother in the grade above him, who’s actually super popular and jock-y but they pretend not to know each other in the hallways
