Many people not shipping byler think that Will is going to come out to Mike and then Mike will accept and respect his friend, but he, of course, won't reciprocate, since he's straight and in love with El. I thought about how such a scene could look like, and here is the result, enjoy!

Mike and the "truth" in s4

The way that byler is literally going to happen is so insane, like. What. Literally where else would the show be leading.

Like why the hell would Mike nod after Will says "what if they dont like the truth?"

The only thing that they're implying here is that Mike is hiding some "truth," and he's afraid of what will happen if he tells people. They're talking about Mike being unable to say I love you to El, so this truth has to have something to do with that.

Why would Mike be afraid to say I love you to El? (Bc he doesn't) Why would he be afraid to tell her the reason? (Bc he's afraid of confronting his sexuality)

"If that guy lived one more second, one more second, we would know where she is. Why didnt he just say the number? I should have explained myself, cause then maybe El would have taken me with her, and things would be different...but I didn't know what to say."

I find it so compelling and intriguing that Mike is talking about Unknown Hero Agent Man one second, and literally the next second he's talking about him and El. The line "why didn't he just say the number?" To me sounds like a coded way of Mike saying "why can't I do this right? Why can't I just be normal?"

Normal as in straight. He feels like he can't do normal things without screwing up, without disappointing people. This is because he isn't normal. He's a nerd. He's in love with his best friend and doesn't know it.

"Sometimes, I think it's just scary to open up like that. To say how you really feel. Especially to the people you care about the most, because...what if they don't like the truth?"

Will is putting words to Mike's worries. He's saying it for him, without really saying it, but they both understand what they're talking about.

"Maybe I should have said something, and if I would have said that thing, then maybe she'd want me there with her, wherever she is."

"Look, Mike, you're going to see her again. And whatever it is, whatever you didn't say, you can say it to her then."

(Except it takes El almost dying, and Will's encouragement, for Mike to say he loves her...)

He's genuinely afraid of losing her, of her leaving him behind, but (in his mind) if he doesn't say it, he'll lose her.

But, if he does say it, he'll lose Will.

"I feel like maybe I was worrying too much about El, and, I dont know, maybe I feel like I lost you or something."

He's being pulled in two different directions by the people he cares about the most, and he doesn't know what to say to keep them both.

(Also the hopeful puppy-dog stare and the way he quirks his eyebrow after Will says "cool" guts me. And the nonchalant way he says "cool" back. He's trying so hard to be chill, and not giggle or kick his feet or blush. It's so sweet. Like man they really love each other.)

This whole season is about Mike hiding some truth. That truth has to come out (no pun intended) for Mike's character arc in season 4 to be resolved, and for his character arc throughout the whole show to have a satisfying resolution.

S1: Finding Will

S2: Getting El back

S3/S4: losing both Will and El again (growing distant from Will, unable to say he loves El)

S5: finding/accepting himself, resolving his inner conflict and relationships with Will and El)

Mike needs them both, but it's what he thinks he "should" say/do/be that's pushing them both away.

Anyway going to go rewatch season 1 with my dad :)
