Code Question of the Day Monday, April 20, 2015
Code Question of the Day Monday, April 20, 2015
Note: this condition is seen quite often on home inspections.
Monday's Question:
Charlie can't say how important the education you provide is to our day to day. On a recent site visit I noted to the electrician (brought in because we had AFCI breaker failure, but that's another story altogether) that the grounded (neutral) conductors were placed under the same screw on the buss. At first he argued that it was ok if conductors were of the same gauge and then stated since they were different gauge that was the problem. It's my belief that 408.41 says I'm right in either case. He agreed to move the conductor but under protest. Jeff Frishof
Monday's Answer:
Hey Jeff thanks for your question and the compliment. I agree you are right. Even if the termination is identified for more than one conductor (same or different sizes) only one grounded conductor is allowed per terminal in a panelboard as stated in 408.41. Grounded conductors can have current present under normal conditions so are required to be terminated individually.

Step 4 of water heater installation “Important! Do not break this seal! Do not connect electricity until you read step 4 in the quick guide to hot water.” Looks like someone skipped step 4.

Tip of the Week: Exceed NEC Requirements for Improved Efficiency- From EC&M
In many design, installation, and maintenance situations there are compelling reasons to exceed the NEC requirements. But if it makes sense to exceed the NEC requirements, why aren’t the requirements written so this issue never comes up?
In its introduction, the NEC specifically states: “This Code is not intended as a design specification....” [90.1(A)]. Its focus is on safety [90.1(B)], not on optimal operation, maximum reliability, or even efficiency.
A common reason for exceeding the NEC requirements is that the minimum for safety is not necessarily efficient. Applying good engineering practices and judgment, you can get your efficiency. But in many cases, you will have to exceed the NEC requirements to do so. For example, something as simple as exceeding the NEC receptacle requirements for a work area can make a big difference in operational efficiency.
