“ what do you do for work? ” roger asked, tilting his head slightly. “ i do a bit of painting and sketching. as for a muse? i have yet to find someone. i think it would be awhile until i find one. ” he shrugged. “it’s more of a hobby, so i don’t think i’ll ever be a great artist. something to keep my busy during my job. ” the countless times his dad would walk up to roger not working, but doodling was almost laughable. the times where his dad would snatch it away was even funnier. “oh please, i’m pretty sure i’ll be saying more dumb things than you.” he raised an eyebrow at the yelling part. “who would yell at you for prying?” he was suddenly filled with annoyance at the thought of someone yelling at her over something so small. he brushed it off, knowing that he’d feel the same about anyone else. “unless you count twenty-three as really young, then nope. although, being a skinny hipster santa would be super cool.” he stopped a moment to think about how he would look with a white beard and all. “unfortunately, i’m just some guy with a concerning amount of moles.” he chuckled, instinctively touching his face. “what about you? what’s something that you would use to describe your appearance?” roger heard her mumble, but decided against saying anything about it. if she really wanted him to hear it, she would’ve said it louder.
“I work in a research lab, which sounds a lot fancier than it actually is let me assure you.” Natalie let out a small laugh thinking about what her day usually consists of, “it’s a lot of scribbling down numbers, making friends with microorganisms and spinning around in office chairs.” Nodding at his words she tried to put herself in his shoes, she never really understood hobbies, maybe because she never had one, well unless you counted reading. For Natalie hobbies were always something she turned into a career, for example looking at things under a microscope, she studied things, anything, which again, she never considered a hobby. “How come you don’t turn your art into a career? I mean it doesn’t really sound like you enjoy your job that much. How come you’re not doing something you like?” Pausing, she spoke up again before he could answer, “I mean, if you could do anything in the world what would it be?” Shrugging although he couldn’t see Natalie rolled her eyes, “no one in particular, just some people I meet, they think I’m nosy.” Laughing Natalie felt some sort of relief knowing he was only twenty-three. “If twenty-three is considered old then I’m one birthday away from being considered old. I bet you’d make a great hipster Santa, maybe that’s what you should be. Work at coffee shops and indie record stores during the holidays as hipster Santa.” His next question made her think, she hadn’t been asked to describe her appearance, since- well she couldn’t actually remember a time, most people didn’t need to since they could see her. “Hmmmm...” she hummed as she thought, “round face and distinct nose.”

roger: WHAT
roger: i think that's super unfair.
roger: that's like me saying we can't be friends because you don't like pineapple on pizza or whatever
natalie: i think it's completely fair my mystery man
natalie: you need to watch it
natalie: are you really the kind of person who puts pineapple on pizza?

‘ ooh, late night boy. i like that. ’ roger thought as he listened to her talk. he could feel the shift in her mood as she spoke to him. he nodded in agreement as he took a long drink, thinking about what to say. “ i guess i understand where you’re coming from. i feel like i’m in a standstill because i’m in a career i’m not super fond of, but i don’t want to quit, not to mention all the unfinished artwork that i have piling up. ” he interpreted her words as best as he could so that he could relate to it. “ it’s not dumb. nothing you say is dumb. ” he reassured her. “ and trust me, if you talked too much then i’d tell you. ” he chuckled as he took another drink. he leaned his body against the railing of the fire escape, letting his hands dangle. “ i’m going to assume we’re the same age, so it’s not a bad thing that you’re still trying to figure yourself out. i think everyone is, no matter how old they get. ”
“I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love my job, I do, but I think I was expecting more from it.” Natalie looked down at her glass as she listened to him talk, her head perking up when he mentioned art. Natalie had always been more of the logical person, she was never really good when it came to anything creative. Anyone who had even a remote sense of artistic talent amazed her. “Artwork? What do you work on? Do you paint? Sculpt? Sketch? How come you don’t finish them? You should find yourself a muse, I’ve read every great artist had one.” Her mind wandered at the thought of a muse, the thought that maybe one day he’d find one and it wouldn’t be her, she could feel herself becoming jealous for no apparent reason, she never saw this man before, he could have a girlfriend for all she knew, but for some reason she felt like he was hers. Not in a romantic sense, well completely at least, just in the sense that he was becoming a constant in her life and it would be hard if that ever changed. “Oh please, I know I say some dumb things, I feel as though it’s impossible for a human to say only intelligent things.” Natalie smiled into her glass though, his simple words causing her to blush. “Please, let me know, because I have been yelled at for prying too much.” Letting out a small laugh Natalie shook her head, “Oh, so you’re not a really old man with a young voice? Or a really young kid with a mature voice who smokes and drinks beer? You know, to be honest for a while I was sure you were that older man with the long white beard, you know the one that looks like a skinny Santa?” Nodding at his words Natalie felt comforted knowing she wasn’t alone, “we’re all just lost stars” her words were just above a whisper, mostly being thought out loud to herself.

“aw boo. i was hoping there’d be a chance i’d get some free candy.” roger pouted. it was a little hard for him to personally believe a girl as intriguing as her wouldn’t have many people knocking at her door. if what she said was true, then people are really missing out on a great personality. roger began to kick his feet, thinking about a response. why did he always come back to talk to her? there were plenty of people who wanted to talk to him, but it was always missing something. a connection. “i guess i’m just trusting my instincts too.” he shrugged as he leaned back, resting his weight on his arms. roger looked up at the night sky. it was the exact same one that the two of them would look at together. they’d watch the night turn to early morning together. connection was the key word that kept popping up in roger’s mind. he had such a strong connection with a stranger. a girl he had never seen, but he feels like he could rely on her. “yknow..” he started, taking a drink. “it’s really comforting knowing that i’ve got you to come home to.” his tone was friendly, not thinking much of the words he was saying. “so, fire escape girl,” he grunted as he sat back up. “tell me about your day.”
His words made her entire body warm up, knowing she wasn’t alone in what she was feeling brought her an unbelievable sense of comfort. “I feel the same way” her words soared above brightly through her smile, “It’s always something to look forward to.” She laughed at his nickname for her, feeling like she needed one for him as well, even if it was as obvious as hers was. “Well, my late night friend, it was pretty uneventful.” Letting out a sigh her eyes fell back down to her glass as she thought back to her day. “Do you ever feel like you put your whole body and soul into something, work at it day in and day out and still when the day is done feel like you’ve gotten nowhere? I feel like that’s how my days have been lately, just like I’m running and running to get to that finish line but I never get any closer.” Leaning her head back again Natalie shrugged, “I don’t know. It’s probably dumb but sometimes I just feel as though my entire life is me wandering around asking all the right questions but not getting any answers. Maybe that’s why I talk so much, I’m just trying to figure things out for myself.”

roger laughed along with her. “damn, i’ll clean out my kitchen. you don’t have to insult me like that.” he joked at her comment about the smell of their apartment. looking down at his dangling feet, he held back a thought. ‘ well, i’m glad you aren’t some secret millionaire.’ he didn’t want to make the friendship weird by saying that. she was a major part of her routine. one of the main components of his day that stayed consistent. he mumbled a ‘be right back’ before quickly climbing back inside his window to grab two beers from the fridge – one for now and one for later. roger was getting too much into his thoughts again. “hm, what candy should you leave me?” he asked when he was situated again, opening the bottle of fruity flavored beer. “i guess kit kat or sour skittles. i like those two.” he shrugged as he took a long drink. roger had to admit that sex and drinking was fun, sure, but he always found this more fun and comforting. letting the day pass by as he spoke and connected to a total stranger with no impure intentions. “and i’m sure you can find something better to do than talk to some guy who smokes and drinks more often then he should for the sake of his health. i mean, you’re a smart girl. what happened to that whole notion of ‘never talking to strangers’ ?” roger questioned, putting up air quotes with his fingers as he drank again.
Natalie laughed at his comment as she pulled her legs tighter to her chest, wrapping her arms around her knees as she sipped her wine over the tops. “I mean, I don’t think I ask for much, or anything really, the least you can do is keep your stench down.” Looking up she watched the bottoms of his feet through the grate walking to the window, she continued to stare at the stars through the small holes, big enough to see the light but not enough to she the man she craved to view. It was weird, she would have dreams about him, his voice but not even her mind could make up what he looked for, he was always a shadow, Natalie just hoped it wouldn’t always be like that. The step on the grate brought her back to reality as she watched him sit back down. “Kit kats and sour skittles, noted, although I don’t go out much so I highly doubt you’ll ever get candy from me sorry to say.” Resting her head on the bars behind her Natalie angled her head so she could see right past the landing above her and back up at the sky, letting out a soft sigh, “I don’t know, I never really believed in that notion, if you never talked to strangers you would never make any friends. I’ve always been much more of a trust your instincts and question everything kind of person. Same could be said to you, you know. Why sit out talking to a girl who asks way too many questions and drinks nothing but cheap white wine?” Natalie was honestly curious, wondering what kept him coming back.

roger: it's like 2am
roger: are you okay?
natalie: i'm aware. i've had way too much coffee and no i'm not okay!
natalie: in high school musical one during stick to the status quo aren't they all going against the status quo by literally breaking into song and dance in the middle of lunch? And Chad is also straight up singing when he makes fun of Troy for it? Why? Then in high school musical two how is Troy jealous of Ryan? He is so obviously gay that Troy should feel ashamed of himself for thinking Gabriella was interested. Lastly in high school musical three, Troy and Chad dance in the junkyard like they did when they were kids, but what parent with common sense let their kid play in a junkyard?
natalie: why?

roger chuckled, as he shrugged. “ hey, how am i suppose to know that you’re not some secret millionaire? ” he questioned as he let the cigarette hang from his lips, pulling out his phone. “ pinot grigio ? ” he repeated as he typed it down. “ it sounds fancy. ” he chuckled as he exhaled. roger looked down at his shoes. oh he was so tempted to lean over just a little more to take a peek at the girl downstairs, but he couldn’t bring himself to ruin whatever they got going. “ i mean, i don’t mind that option of us doing that if someone’s not here. ” he leaned back to put out his cigarette in his ash tray. “ trust me, i want to be here every single night too. ” roger confessed with a shy smile. she was always on his mind, the comforting feeling that she provided to him — especially on all of his most hectic days.
Natalie laughed shaking her head slightly, “if I was a secret millionaire I’m pretty sure I would have at least moved out of this apartment building. “I mean, maybe it’s just me, but the whole place smells like fish sticks and stale bread.” Shrugging Natalie continued to sip her wine. “Alright, good to know, so if I’m not here one night, say on a hot date or wrestling a stay kangaroo, what candy should I leave you?” She smirked as she waited for his response, lifting her glass up to the sky so she could catch starlight in her light liquid, wondering if he preferred watching the ash of his cigarette fall to the ground or the smoke escape to the sky. A smiled grew on her face as her eyes drew to where she guessed he stood above her, knowing he would rather be here every night. “Oh please, you can’t be serious. I’m sure whatever you were doing last night was much more fun than a chilly fire escape and a girl with cheap wine.”

“ what type is it ? is it an expensive wine or is all wine the same ? ” roger questioned as he reached behind him to tap off the ash into the tray. everything came so naturally between them. he never thought too much about the talks they shared. he seemed to learn more about her as each day passed and it was comforting. his heart skipped a beat when she asked where he was. “ i went out last night and came back like.. super late. ” he ended up going to someone else’s place, but he didn’t have the heart to say he hooked up with someone.it was weird. they weren’t even dating. they never even saw each other before. “ darn, i knew i should’ve gotten that instead. ” he snapped his fingers, an obvious change in tone as he went to lighten the mood. “ don’t worry, i’ll just get you a whole candy store one day. ”
“Expensive?” Natalie let out a soft laugh and shook her head, “oh no, not at all, it’s just barefoot, pinot grigio, same kind I’ve been drinking all through college. I guess I’m a creature of habit.” She watched the light liquid swirl around her glass as she listened to his tone change, making a mental note on how the mood took a turn on the question. “The whole candy store?” Her voice had an incredulous tone to her as her smile grew. “Well, I am honored, truly, it’s completely unnecessary though. So, is that going to be our thing now? When one of us doesn’t make it out here? A note and a candy?” Natalie sipped her wine as she waited his answer. “I mean I’d prefer for both of us to be here rather than a note, but just in case.” She added as the thought came to her mind.

roger was home early from his shift at the police station. he was tired of working there. he loved working with his dad, yes; but he wanted to do something better. the thought of going back to school was slightly inviting, but not enough for him to fully invest into the idea. he could just quit, but he couldn’t lose out on the pay he was recieving. he watched the city live below him, back against the brick wall of the building. he was almost ready to go back inside when he heard the voice of the girl downstairs. a wide smile formed on his lips as he moved closer to the edge, hanging his legs over the edge so he can put his entire attention on her. “ i mean, there is a real fire right here. ” he teased as he flicked the lighter in his hand. after a short second, he came to the realization that she might not be able to see it. “ uh.. i’m talking about my lighter if you can’t tell. ” he blushed as he leaned back to place it on his window sill. “ you drinking that one wine again? ” he questioned as he took a drag, watching the smoke leave his lips slowly.
Letting out a soft laugh Natalie nodded, “thank you for clarifying, I was about to start running down thing thing.” Sarcasm laced her words before taking a sip of her wine, these were some of her favorite moments, it felt like she had someone to come home to, to talk about her day with, even if it was someone she had never seen before, it was still someone. “Well- it’s not the same wine as the night before but it is the same kind, because it’s the best.” Sitting down in the corner of the metal grate Natalie brought her knees to her chest, swirling the wine around in her glass. “You weren’t here last night, you do anything fun?” She was well aware the question was nosy and the answer was none of her business, but it didn’t stop her from asking. “The note was nice, but I like milky ways the best, just for next time.” Natalie smirked before taking another sip of her wine.

“there’s no proven fact that aliens think we look cute or they don’t, and how do we know if aliens or ugly. what if our perception of beauty is the one that is skewed?” he asks with a raise of an eyebrow. “creative decision, no one has ever seen an alien and lived to tell about it.”
Natalie paused for only a moment to collect her thoughts. “Yeah, but I don’t think all aliens are ugly just some of the ways that Hollywood makes them look isn’t the best. I will say that as Americans alone our perception of beauty may be skewed but if you factor in the entire Earth, maybe as a whole we find just about everything beautiful? You know what I mean? Like here we think one thing but in Indonesia they might think another so overall we have a vast definition of beauty.” Shrugging Natalie picked up another lock of her hair to twist, “well I think they could have done better than ET. Made him a little less wrinkly at least.”

“yeah on all of the spare time i have i will search endlessly for the answer to your insane question.” hunter rolled his eyes at natalie as he leaned back and relaxed in his seat, not removing his eyes from her. “maybe he is, but as long as he makes a good coffee then who really cares.” he shook his head, most of the time he wished he thought like natalie did, she always sounded so whimsical to him, he envied it. “that’s crazy, we need to get you some sausage immediately, you don’t know what you’re missing out on.” the blonde boy couldn’t help but find himself laughing again, he always did around her. “i don’t know, i think about the people i love, paying rent, grading papers. pretty practical things.”
“I do, I care, how can he make my coffee for this long and not tell me the secrets of the other world? Or even abduct me, I think I’m a great candidate for being abducted.” Natalie couldn’t be happier with a friend like Hunter, someone to listen to her thoughts and questions without the added annoyance that most people had towards her and her thoughts. “No, I refuse, sausage is creepy and I stand by that.” Nodding at his answer Natalie shrugged, “I mean I think about all those things too, well except grading teachers, I don’t think I would make a very good teacher. I mean how do you do it? You must get asked some ridiculous questions.” A smirk played on her lips at her last words.
