Final Part 2: Ekphrasis Painting
Primarily inspired by this paint pattern on the wall, I chose the lyrics to The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out To Get Us! to inform how I transformed it into a landscape.
These are the different progress pics. I originally planned on having grassy hills but ended up using treetops to better inform the perspective / distance.
Here is the version I finished by the Wednesday critique:
I'm pretty proud that I was able to create this 3D landscape out of a 2D pattern of paint on the wall. The painting's perspective does feel a bit wonky but smoothly, not jarring, if that makes sense. It feels like a product of the nature of the translation.
Also, if you look at my second sketch, I didn't add the tent by the time of the critique. It wasn't necessary for my translation of the landscape and was more for the purpose of tying in the song better to the project.
But, when I came to class to pick up my painting the next day, there were some shading errors that I couldn't overlook before taking it home. Fixing those errors turned into adding a couple more shades of green to the trees, which turned into finally adding the tent.
Here is the post-critique, completely finished version:

Week 9 Prompt: An Ending
This is the final paragraph of East of Eden, by John Steinbeck. The book takes place across 3 generations within a family and displays the concept Timshel. The word directly translates to "thou mayest", which represents the idea that you free yourself from evil regardless of your circumstances. In the book, those circumstances are the evils of the previous generation(s).

Week 8 Prompt: Light and/or Shadows
This is a recreation of one of the nighttime disposable photos that I tried to get (reposted right under).
This color recreation was shot with my iPhone camera. The original photo was taken just after a rainstorm so to get the reflection in the ashtray again, I had to make several trips to my apartment with my water bottle.
For the disposable photo, I spent 15-20 minutes in the cold getting the right angle for the exit sign to be reflected and everything. I was most excited for that one and it turned out very differently. I've learned over and over in this class not to have rigid expectations, but it still felt like a bunch of my effort wasn't realized.

Week 7 Prompt: A Place That Doesn't Exist
This is a sketch for a painting I had planned to make for my friend. I never got around to it because starting a painting was pretty daunting and I kept putting it off. After this class and having more confidence in my ability, I plan to finish it.

Project 3: Image from Memory
This is a drawing of the rotarod, a machine used to measure how long mice can stay on a rotating log rolling treadmill. Once they can't continue then they fall off into the bottom, I record their times, and then I take them out and put them back on.
The bottom drawing was done by 2/8 but I finished the top (improved) version on 2/11.

Week 5 Prompt: 5 Iterations
Originally just iterations of the coal/dust guys from Spirited Away doing different activities.
I used them for project 3: drawing from memory. I decided to turn them into mice, so I added tails and ears and rotarod-specific activities to practice.
