basically he's like go on push me I know you like it, and they're so mad because if they push more, he'll be right which threatens their masculinity, and if they pull away they'll be admitting that he's got to them, or, for that matter, that they've identified the subtext in the first place, which also threatens their masculinity
and then there's the fact that they couldn't let themselves be pushed like that but ooh don't you wish you could big boy
i love it when one of buffy's macho guys is threatening spike and he goes sooo slinkety faggoty and they're enraged because suddenly they see what she sees in him

Speaking of the Hungarian translation of the Locked Tomb, a number of Choices were Made when it comes to formal and informal address. Wow this will be so hard to explain.
Quick primer: there's formal and informal address in the second person, last name basis means formal you, first name basis means informal you, except when it doesn't.
Asymmetric use of formality is pretty rare: if the other person uses informal, you can either accept it and you'll both use informal, or you can reject it and you'll both go back to formal. Children are addressed informally, but are often taught to use formal to address teachers and elderly relatives, and some people never graduate to informal with their grandma. But if there's ongoing asymmetry of address between two adults, something is probably wrong: the common term for this is "csendőrpertu", the "policeman's informal." As in, a person in a position of power uses familiar, informal language, and the subordinate/civilian keeps using the polite formal, because returning the disrespectful informality would be seen as, well, disrespectful. Historically, employers/lords/kings(/parents) could use one-sided informality, as a status thing, but that a) wasn't actually the same formula and b) is no longer seen as acceptable.
My point is, the Hungarian translation of the Locked Tomb is full of asymmetry. Sustained asymmetric address, in very modern contemporary language, between two people who know each other, reads extremely unnatural. Nobody talks like that. I'm honestly on the fence over whether this even works, but I have to admit that it really highlights the inequality and tension within some relationships. Harrow addresses Ortus informally and Ortus responds in formal, which emphasizes that she's treating him like a servant. John addresses Harrow informally, but Harrow obviously cannot use informal to the Emperor's face. So he's showing her affection in a way that's actively stressing her out, the language equivalent of offering those biscuits. And John has the same inequality with all his Lyctors: he addresses them as friends and equals, and they respond like they know they are servants.
Harrow uses mutual formal with Palamedes (friendly respect) and mutual informal with Ianthe (fairly intimate disrespect.) I'm almost certain that Gideon has the guts to return informal address despite being technically her servant, but I can't get my hands on the first volume (all the library copies are out.)

You can use any travel method you like, walking, public transport, so on. You can get an uber but their map has failed so you'll have to give directions. You can travel to other countries and count those libraries but you have to be able to completely navigate from your home without assistance. So you can catch a plane but must be able to travel to and from the airport. No limit on how long it takes. If you know which block it's on or which tram line but aren't sure precisely, but you feel sure you'd find it once you got there, count that as a yes (if you're not sure maybe google it now and see if your plan would work). You cannot rely on asking for directions though, this must be all your knowledge
#I counted to 13 within reasonable distance but there's probably somewhere I'm forgetting#and a few in other cities#...oh and a few uni libraries#tag tag

I'm replaying dragon age 2 and trying to try harder not to try to please everyone lol. not sure there's a marked difference in any of my choices but I'm being mean to Carver and Merrill as an outlet (but I feel bad about the latter even though she's annoying 😔)

if you interrupt a scene with backstory I promise it's okay to just get back to the scene you don't need to do a "the MC shook himself out of recalling everything that had happened to him in chronological order and returned to his current task of cutting a man's head open" I swear it's fiiiiine
#just came across this in a nonfiction memoir which is extra weird#lit#writing#I mean this is exaggerated obviously & a mid-neurosurgery exposition break might not be the best place for it anyway. but often it would be#fine if you just didn't make the character stop to remember with us

fun thing about T is that even though I've been getting increasingly out of shape in every other regard and do not exercise, I can now do 10 pushups instead of 7
#I do them every now and then just to check that I still can. like a baseline#all is not lost as long as I can do my <s>7</s> 10 pushups#trans#personal#I miss going to the gym but I lack the motivation to do it alone :(

why The fuck did my phone just not only out of the blue try to prompt me to start using ~~Gemini AI assistant~~ or whatever but, when I didn't press "maybe later" (how about never???) fast enough, open the front camera and "assist" me in taking a selfie???
#I got a similar prompt a week or two ago to tell me I now had gemini instead of whatever the previous assistant was called but that time#I managed to banish it without being forcibly assisted#at least the previous shitwhateverthing only tried to get me to use it when I accidentally pressed a specific button for too long#I hate it here#off topic
