now with Gifs :)
Waves! 90% of my animation work is burning, exploding, electrifying, blood spilling… just destroying things really. But from time to time I get a calm tranquil scene, and I really appreciate them. I also really enjoy animating the ocean and waves (even if there is a giant robot behind that wants to kill you) And finally I’ve been recently getting to animate Logo transitions, which was my dream job when I was a graphic designer back in the day, I never thought I would ended up animating Logo transitions for japanese style western animation studios… Thanks to @thelineanimation and @librabear for this opportunity to work together again. https://www.instagram.com/naokiaraiza/p/BxJ1yuylC_F/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=j5vcf561q1wy

Arderne Gardens Went outside, tried to step out of realistic, finished the drawing latter with a picture. And it ended up being semi-realistic (?) I think I just really like details and accuracy, and as long as I am enjoying the process, the result doesn't really matter. And it was fun! Definitely trying this again. On a quest to find a new way to represent reality one drawing at a time. :) https://www.instagram.com/naokiaraiza/p/Bw6rzPvl0gV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=n3q1elu3gncz

Wild dog I wanted to step a bit away from my comfortable pencil realistic and try something a bit more abstract, I didn't went too far, it still very detailed and accurate but it was fun and different. And Wild dogs are one of my favorite animals, they just look so cool. https://www.instagram.com/naokiaraiza/p/Bwmp8Ollnd_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gelot5gwyywx

Riding the bus, meeting people, observing human beings, drawing portraits and life drawing, it was a good year full of life. So grateful to have the time to do what I love. Thanks for all the ❤s! https://www.instagram.com/p/BsFaZQsBbNO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fh7k2r20m2yj

I worked on the fx for the pilot of Ballmastrz 9009 back in 2016! I am glad it became a series now :)
Being layout supervisor, I didn’t get to animate much except for stuff in the pilot and the last episode. Here’s a piece of animation I did for Ballmastrz 9009 way back when. I forget who it was who did the fx for this particular shot. I think it was Naoki Araiza. The last 2 episodes air this Sunday on Adult Swim at midnight! Watch it!

I am a huge fan of your work and I was wondering if there is any books you would recommend people to check out in terms of fx animation?
Hi, thanks! There aren’t too many books unfortunately... I would recommend “elemental magic” vol 1 and 2 by Joseph Gilland, and check this page and study the masters frame by frame https://www.sakugabooru.com/post?tags=effects+
Hope it helps!

Hi, it's me again! Thank you so much for answering my question. It really helped lift my spirits. I've been pretty discouraged lately. I am glad I found your blog though. I am interested in improving my effects work, and was wondering if it was ok to use the gifs you post as reference? I ask because I am preferential to traditional pencil, and I'm find the digital world hard to wrap my head around. Once again, thanks a lot of the words of encouragement, I really appreciate it :)
Hey, please, be my guest, that's one of the main reasons I am putting all of this material online, and don't hesitate to ask more questions, it keeps this blog alive.

Hello! I am not sure if you check this tumblr a whole lot. I just wanted to let you know that your story really resonates with me. I just finished Vancouver Film School at the age of 27. Now I'm thrust into the animation world with only myself to account for self improvement. I was wondering, what are some good strategies you use in improving your skills? What kind of projects do you give yourself?
Hi!
I totally understand your situation, I went through exactly the same thing.
First of all sometimes getting a job in the animation world is just a matter of knowing the right people at the right time so don’t worry if you can’t get a job right away.
Having a project with a story to tell is a great idea, with a background, a character and a camera, and ask feedback to the experts.
Look for the studios that you want to work with and check their level of quality, see if you can reach it, as an exercise: try to recreate a scene that you like from their demo reel.
Once you think your demo reel is strong enough start sending emails to them. Ask for tests.
I’ve found the old test I did for Ankama that gave me my first job. It is not amazing, is a bit low quality for the studio’s level but it doesn’t matter. It is also the lead’s job to improve the quality of their animators :) And I don’t think you have to be amazingly talented to get a job, the studio only cares that you do the job on time.
Don’t be discouraged if you fail your tests, as long as you keep working constantly and asking for feedback your level will improve.
Hope this helps

La technique des trous (the hole technique)
Design is all about problem solving. One of the most recurring problems in FX animation is how to disappear matter.
This formula consists in animating a "hole" in whatever FX you want to disappear, it works with all types of matter and shapes, fire, smoke, water, wind, sparks, etc. Basically the whole will travel a little bit faster than the matter and erase it at the end.
Be aware that using a formula will help you increase speed and productivity but will solve all problems the same way and therefore make your animation predictable.
