20/02/25 - chapter six: visions

Summary: After his plan to kidnap Takada goes horribly wrong, Mello must take responsibility for the death of Near by arresting Kira under the position of L. No longer able to rely on Matt, he must confront a life he sought to reject, and under the pressure of guilt and inferiority, his grasp on reality slowly begins to deteriorate.

I am going to take a break from publishing for a month, so the next chapter will be posted on 20/03/25 - we are approaching the end of Part One, and I want to spend some time making sure that I know which direction to take for the rest of this story. The succession of nights that follow blur into a haze of emails, phone calls, signing off forms, monitor watching. Watching. Watching. This is what preoccupies me the most. I have not left the small office assigned to me at the detention centre, and with Yagami and Amane's cell footage broadcast live from no less than nine separate angles on the screens before me, there has been no need to leave. No need to move. Just to bear witness.

Both cells have been modified to accommodate the inmates. Each room consists of a small bed and a toilet, but neither have windows, ceiling lights, a desk, or any other of the amenities still afforded to even the most dangerous of criminals. My eyes scan for anything that could pose a threat, paranoid that Takada's death could be repeated, but so far even my most imaginative suicidal ideations have yet to be attempted. I am pleasantly surprised to see that neither had been given the opportunity to hang themselves with a conveniently neglected rope. My trust in the officers is only waning as this case proceeds.

Misa has stopped yelling out to the officers. I muted her feed reluctantly, eventually unable to deal with her insistent cries for their attention. She has already confessed to being the Second Kira. There was no need for interrogation, any persuasion that if she gave up the information of her own accord that she would be granted a more lenient sentence. I thought for Yagami's sake she would have been more persistent in her denial of her role but, from what I was told, she seemed relieved to admit that she carried out many of the killings herself. That much I somewhat doubt, but Amane’s continual detainment is evidently agitating her. Tough shit, she is still looking at life behind bars, so she better get used to confinement soon.

Yagami has taken to pacing around the cell relentlessly. He remains blindfolded as I have given strict instructions that it must not be removed under any circumstances, and a restrictive brace holds his arms behind his back to ensure he has no access to the Death Note strapped to his chest. I almost expect that he will walk into one of the walls at some point, but he has yet to falter, despite how limited his movements are. He can only walk several feet in one direction, before turning back on himself. I want to take a scalpel to his forehead and slice it open to inspect what is going on inside his mind. Maybe I'll have such an honour after the execution.

As a spanish speaking person it’s so weird that Matt’s name Mail is pronounces as “Mile” and not “mail” as in email, because if I read it as I would in spanish it WOULD ACTUALLY be pronounced the english “mile”.

So new headcanon, his name WAS meant to be Miles, but the parent pronounced it to whoever was meant to write it down in his papers or whatever barely stressing the S. This nurse or whoever is a tired, over worked and sleep deprived spanish speaker who just isn’t in bilingual mode at that moment and accidental spelled it how it sounds… but without the S- Mail.

Matt's shirt is inspired by a popular shirt among gay/bi men a few years ago that was sold by a department store here in brazil.

(I have one that looks almost like the 1st one btw, but i think the one we saw the most was the yellow and black one.)

Matt is drinking a popular cheap beer (Skol) and Mello, a random sweet cocktail you can find in almost any vendor at the beach. It's usually condensed milk with lots of alcohol, some have juice etc

I know I can't draw food lmao, but on the table there's fried fish etc yeah pretty common, but the charm is the small cup with pink mayo that my mom always told me not to eat :')

The "grilled cheese stick thingy" is queijo coalho, I don't know if there's a proper translation for that. It's literally a piece of, uh, coalho cheese on a stick that some vendors sell while walking around the beach with a make-shift grill -- usually it's a can filled with coal. There's some places that they even offer molasses to put on it and it's preeeetty good. Once in a barbecue at home I put honey and it was good as well :3

and yeah I replied to the anon because they're brazilian and I got excited so I don't have it anymore so yeah lmao
