about Feanor, and about fathers
the post I just reblogged reminded me of a personal anecdote, and since it's very relevant to how I view Feanor, I want to share it here. but I'm going to put it under a link because it's about my own father and also it might get long
so first of all, I think Feanor was a good father until he wasn't. I think people need to learn how to grapple with the concept that someone can be both things at different points in their life. people are complex, and Feanor in particular is an excellent example of a complex character who gets reduced to like, one or two of his more dominant qualities
when I was little, I adored my father. I took after him a lot and people were always very quick to point out how much I looked like and acted like him. we both loved dogs. we both loved going to the park. he worked for the parks department, and he would take me to see the things he had done in his job, then take me out for ice cream after.
every family trip we took was to somewhere natural. mountains. canyons. forests. lakes. and each trip would turn into an educational journey: he would teach me about the different kinds of trees and flowers and ferns, and he would glow with pride when I was able to correctly name something. they are some of my favorite memories.
he was also very harsh to me. he became harsher as I grew older. there were a lot of unspoken expectations that, when I broke them, he would become unforgiving. during the worst of it, there was a lot of yelling. words like "weak" and "worthless" became commonplace. twice he threatened to kick me out of his house if I did not obey him.
people who know about this last part have trouble coming to terms with the first part. they tell me he was a bad father, that I should disown him, that he doesn't deserve me. I also went through a period of struggling with reconciling these two sides of him, but now, more than a decade after his death, this idea that he was universally bad to me does not sit right. I think he was a good father to me overall. I just think that he had a period of inner torment, like Feanor's fall, and it caused him to become angrier and to lash out faster.
I took to heart those lessons about nature that he taught me. I still enjoy walking through the park. I can still name the trees. I think of him every time I am walking through one of the public parks in my city, actually, since most of them still have something about them that I can point to and say that he did. and I am proud of that.
for these reasons, I can easily see and understand a Feanor who was gentle to his sons when they were growing up. who was careful, and kind, and who made sure they understood the things around them. the Silmarillion says he took his family on long trips in the Pelori. I like to imagine him pointing out the gemstones in the rock, and smiling as he taught his sons how to pronounce each name.
I don't think his actions around the Oath or the Uprising negate this. he was grieving for his own father. his world was falling to pieces around him. does it excuse the fact that he used his dying breath to further bind his sons to the Oath that would destroy them? no, of course not. but those actions also don't mean that Feanor was like that for the entirety of his relationship with his family.
let Feanor be a good father, right up until he falls. and then let his sons grapple with that and come to terms with it in their own way.

As someone in and around their 30’s it has been INSANE to see feminism in popular media descend through
Women can wear pants and play sports and that’s equality. Women don’t just belong inside the house. This woman has a career
This woman can be a mechanic just like a man could. She’s probably still a lesbian, though, which is basically the closest to a man a woman can *be*, and explains everything. But she’s still a person!
If a woman superhero CHOOSES to wear stilettos to fight crime, that’s girl power! This comic character written and designed by men wears a bikini and has a waist size of 12 inches because it makes her FEEL POWERFUL! Girls don’t HAVE to dress boyish to be strong! She can make you a sandwich AND be a feminist! Girl power!
What, are you saying women HAVE to do boy things to be taken seriously? Who are you to tell a woman what to do? Maybe some women NEED to get their hair and nails done twice a month to feel powerful! Maybe a lot of women WANT to be stay-at-home moms!
What I don’t think you understand is that women have an inherent feminine spirituality which guides them towards maternal and nurturing paths. Women need to honour their divine female aura to keep their. Their fuckin. Their chakras together or some shit. You should put quartz up your hooha and huff wheatgrass. Leaving manual labour and science and technology to men is natural and good for you spiritually
Uh she can’t do that, that’s a blue job, she’s a pink job girly. Food? Yeah, she’s having #girl dinner, which is a handful of almonds. Time for our 15 step skincare routine, which is empowering. Hashtag #girlboss. Ew no, touching dirt? She’s just a girl. You can’t expect a girl to do that. Haha #girl logic

possession horror where the thing possessing the autistic character causes them to behave in a more neurotypical way. autistic possession horror where the thing inside you is easier to communicate with than you are, the thing inside you doesn’t have a flat affect, the thing inside you doesn’t let your body stim, the thing inside you is how you were told to behave and you can only do it when you are no longer you. autistic possession horror where you will never forget that everyone liked it better than you before they found out something was controlling you. autistic possession horror where they know what’s inside you isn’t you and debate whether it would be easier for everyone to leave you like this anyway. you agree. reblog.

@erdariel, it's a lot more simple to learn animation that you may think it is! I use clip studio paint, and there's a bit of a learning curve (be prepared to make a number of dogshit ones) but I first started by practising fog rising, which even done poorly can still look good enough to give encouragement!
I'd recommend watching a youtube video or two but idk. It's not as difficult as you may think.

Um. Hmmm. Maybe it's just me, but that doesn't really seem like an intrusive thought
