Is there a magic secret I never learned in all the art classes I've taken? How do you pick the colors you use??? I'm in love with all your choices. Like the little bits of color that don't match what color it's near... how do you decide where the color goes? Is it like the shadows and highlights? Your color palettes are gorgeous. Your art is so beautiful.

there is no magic secret! it is all about how you choose to interpret the color you see—i.e., your personal stylization.

look at this wonderful picture of fuji apples:

the local color of the fuji apples above is red, and they're lit and photographed in a way that makes them appear pretty uniformly red in hue as well. but you can still pick up some small variations in hue, as well as saturation (chroma) and value!

you can go the hyper-realistic route, carefully observing and replicating the colors you see to create a painting of fuji apples that is as close to real life as possible. you can also choose to stylize and interpret the colors through a certain lens, which may help convey a certain mood or just make the image more aesthetically pleasing (humans usually enjoy limited palettes it seems).

there is an infinite number of ways you can do that! which is where the fun of experimenting and developing your own style lies. the important thing you need to remember is that, while i picked those little swatches with the eyedropper tool, you should observe and depict any color in relation to its neighbor and not on its own. is this patch cooler or warmer in hue in relation to its neighbor? is it more or less saturated? is it lighter or darker in color?

once you have analyzed those properties, you can think of how you want to stylize them. would you like to lean the darker shades red? would you like to make one object more saturated than everything else in the picture, to draw the viewer's attention to it? would you like to make all the lighter colors lighter and all the darker colors darker in order to up the contrast of your painting? the possibilities are endless.

here's my little 15 minute study!

i made the background more green in hue because i wanted the apples to stand out more, pushed the highlights away from white and towards light green to make the color scheme more harmonious, and added purple to the shadows because that's what i do. : ) among other things. it has changed both the mood and the lighting of the original photo! and you don't have to follow this algorithm for everything, or indeed anything—you can play around with color any way you want.

you can do this kind of color nudging with color overlays in graphic software too, to a certain extent. for example, if you set a solid yellow layer to 'darken color' over a picture, it will turn all the pixels of that picture that are lighter in value than that particular yellow into that yellow. things like that can make your color palette more cohesive/limited, and doing those adjustments in your head as you paint (as opposed to on a separate layer) can make them look more varied and fun. no shame in color correction, use it! it's a tool just like any traditional glaze is, and if you have a favorite 'glaze', with practice you will figure out what it is you like about it and start incorporating that right at the painting stage.

tl;dr: observe the colors around you in relation to each other, experiment with them, and most importantly paint and practice a lot! thankfully there are no magical secrets, only color theory and practice 💪( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

for color theory reading, i recommend James Gurney's Color and Light! it was recommended to me last year, and introduced me to the gamut map approach, which i hadn't been familiar with before. i've only used it once but it was tremendous fun and taught me a couple new things.

I haven’t really seen any of the more recent U.S. election news hitting tumblr yet so here’s some updates (now edited with sources added):

There’s evidence of Trump cheating and interfering with the election.

Possible Russian interference.

Mail-in ballots are not being counted or “recognized” in multiple (notably swing) states.

30+ bomb threats were called in and shut down polling stations on Election Day.

20+ million votes are still unaccounted for, and that’s just to have the same voter turnout as 2020.

There was record voter turnout and new/first-time voter registration this year. We definitely should be well over the turnout in 2020.

U.S. citizens are using this site to demand, not only a recount, but a complete investigation into election fraud and interference for the reasons stated above:

Here is what I submitted as an example:

An investigation for election interference and fraud is required. We desperately need a recount or even a revote. The American people deserve the right to a free and fair election. There has been evidence unveiled of Trump cheating and committing election fraud which is illegal. There is some evidence of possible Russian interference. At least 30+ bomb threats were called in to polling places. Multiple, notably swing states, have ballots unaccounted for and voting machines not registering votes. Ballots and ballot boxes were tampered with and burned. Over 20 million votes that we know of are unaccounted for. With record turnout and new voter registration this year, there should be no possibility that there are less votes than even in the 2020 election.

The first is a screenshot with a link and information for contacting the White House directly regarding election fraud. The instructions include choosing to leave a comment to President Joe Biden directly and to select election security as the reason.

The screenshot then instructs people to include any or all of the following information in a paragraph as a comment to the president:

32 fake bomb threats were called into Democratic leaning poll places, rendering polling places closed for at least an hour.

A lot of people reporting their ballots were not counted for various reasons.

This all occurred in swing states.

This is too coincidental that these things happen and swing in his favor after months of hinting at foul play.

Directly state that an investigation for tampering, interference, fraud is required, not just a recount.

The challenge argues that a provision of the Pennsylvania Election Code takes precedence over the federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), which requires states and counties to permit U.S. citizens who move overseas to vote by absentee ballot for federal offices based on their last U.S. residential address.

The full text of the challenge that was filed appears below this email.

You may respond to the challenge in any of the following ways:

1. Call the Bureau of Registration and Election at (717) 780-6360;

2. Email a statement to the Bureau at Election election@dauphincounty.gov. Any statement you submit regarding the period during which you lived in Dauphin County, any family or connections that you still have here, and why you are now residing abroad would be read into the record.

The last image is a screenshot of the official statement from the Centre County, Pennsylvania Board of Commissioners released on November 6, 2024 that states:

Centre County Working with Ballot Scanner Vendor to Export Election Results.

(Bellefonte, PA) -Centre County Elections Office is working continuously to provide mail-in ballot data in order to post unofficial results.

To this point, all ballots have been scanned, including all mail-in ballots.

Centre County's Election team and IT team have identified that the data are successfully being exported from the mail-in ballot scanners, but that the data is not being recognized when uploaded to the elections software.

Centre County's Administrator, John Franek, Jr. stated, "We have not stopped working, and we will continue to work until unofficial results are posted and reported to the Pennsylvania Department of State."

As a next step, Centre County has begun working with the equipment vendor to adjust configurations to make the two systems-the mail-in ballot scanner and the elections software where data are uploaded -compatible with one another.

By the way, I saw in the news today that thousands of mail-in ballots in Nevada can't yet be certified because the signature on the envelope doesn't match the name on the voter registration. They suggested that this could be attributed to young people not being used to signing their name.

So if you're a young person in a swing state who voted by mail, it'd be a good idea to check that there isn't a problem with your ballot. They official said they'll be contacting all of the voters in question, but you could be proactive in making sure.

If you haven’t already, please make sure you are registered to vote and know where your polling place is (vote.org is a great and easy way to get that information). Additionally, please make sure you have a way to get to your polling place. Uber and Lyft often give free or discounted rides to the polls, and this year the car rental company, Hertz, is allowing free one-day rentals to get to the polls. More information on that here.

Again, it is your right to vote. If you are in line when the polls close, stay in line. It is your legal right to vote.

If you are turned away at the polls, say the following verbatim: “Give me a provisional ballot with a receipt as required by law.”

If you make a mistake on your ballot, you have the right to ask for a new ballot. Don’t cross anything out, simply ask for a new one.

Poll workers are required to make reasonable accommodations for voters who need, including ballots in other languages or translators.

Canvassing is not allowed at polling places, and no one is allowed to threaten or intimidate voters. You have the right to report anything of the like.

Some tips:

Don’t wear political merch to the polls.

Don’t engage with anyone about your politics at the polls.

Don’t take phone calls inside your polling place — it can wait, please be respectful.

Research who is running locally and see what their policies are. Additionally, research any local propositions that may be on the ballot. The language on ballots is made to be purposefully confusing, so make sure you read everything carefully in addition to your research.

If you’re able to get up early on Election Day, go right when your polling place opens to beat the line.

REMEMBER: IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE!

Please vote tomorrow if you have not already. It’s so important, and choosing not to vote or voting for a third party is a vote for extremist measures. Vote down the ballot, and do not let anyone bully you into voting one certain way.

What we are seeing throughout this election cycle (and the last two election cycles) is entirely abnormal. The bullying we see from a certain side and its supporters is childish and dangerous. They spew false information, make racist remarks, and sexualize and discriminate fellow candidates. No single presidential candidate is completely and wholly good, so criticize accordingly.

Vote with those you love in mind, vote with your safety in mind, and vote for those who will be affected for decades to come. Vote for someone who speaks coherently, not for someone who is, let’s be honest, not cognitively alright — and that is the bare minimum of the issue.

Exit polls suggest DT cannot be caught? YOU STILL GO VOTE.

Polls can be misleading (intentionally or not). The methodology can be biased (or simply poor). Early results may not reflect what the full count will show. There may be a red mirage. NOTHING YOU SEE CONVINCES YOU NOT TO VOTE.

The biggest Democratic win in swing states means nothing if democrats don't turn out everywhere to keep the reliably blue states blue.

VOTE. Wear appropriate weather gear if you think you may have to stand in a line outside (coat, hat, gloves, umbrella, sunhat, whatever, you know where you live). Bring water and a snack and something to do (book, game on your phone, podcast and headphones, whatever, you know what you like). GO VOTE.

Saying "voting doesn't matter" might reach your younger peers online but it certainly hasn't reached Clangus Hargbarg who was part of the kkk in 1951 and still sends in his ballot. He hasn't missed a one.
