nick nelsons journey to accepting being bisexual is genuinely one of if not the best representation of bisexuality that i’ve ever seen onscreen. everything about it- from the way his favourite film as a child was mamma mia, to how confused he is, to his mum saying “you can tell me if you only like boys” “no i like girls too” is just so perfect. i saw myself so much in him it was incredible

Heartstopper gets one thing fundamentally right about being bisexual: the integral role Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) plays in our early identity-formation.
Crushing on Will and Elizabeth (and Jack) is a rite of passage. It 's the bi experience, baby

Say it louder for the people in the back!!
Absolutely in love with the fact that Nick didn't need to have a relationship with a girl prior to his relationship with Charlie to establish that he's bisexual. That he's validated and accepted as bisexual even if Charlie is his first and only partner. That's what healthy representation looks like.

hey guys!!!
so this entire past month has been extremely, extremely stressful for me because i had so many exams and i only realised how hideously unprepared i was for them on the day before the exam, which was really really awful. so in the middle of september i created a studyblr to keep myself motivated + get some helpful tips from the studyblr community on how to go abt studying for tests. the results proved to be super helpful and ive resolved to keep running this blog for as long as i can, because it really helps me stay motivated and i’ve already learned so many things from the community, despite the fact that i’ve only been here for around a month.
but anyways, i decided to create this masterpost in order to help others stay motivated + keep studying not only well but also properly i.e. not necessarily studying for exams but life in general, if that makes sense.

About motivation
You’ve been a lot to ask me about how to stay motivated, especially in exam period. I know it can be quite hard to focus (even for me it’s challenging!) but I’ll give you some tips I personally use when I’m super un-motivated.
Build a routine. Really try to stick to a routine when you come back home from school, do what works best for you! I personally know that when I have a routine all becomes kind of « automatic » and it gets actually easier for me to study since it became part of my routine! Start slow ! For example, fix yourself a 1-hour study session every evening, then add another hour, etc. Don’t forget to also add some activities in your routine that isn’t study related like working out, reading, etc.
Find a good playlist. You can find tons of them on Youtube. I think it’s better to listen to an instrumental-only playlist so you can get more focused. I know that when I listen to certain playlists, I really get in the mood to study!
Upgrade your workspace! I already wrote a whole post about it here :) With a new and organized workspace, it will be more welcoming and you’ll actually want to spend more time there and therefore study more!
Find your WHY. And I know you’ve heard this one over 10000 times, and that’s because it is SO important. You hate math at school? Think about how amazing it is to use math as an instrument to think and to develop our way to resolve problems! Take every lesson as if it was an occasion to learn something new or at least an occasion that will get you closer towards your dream job/ university
Know when you’re effective. For example, I know that I work better under pressure, so I tend to procrastinate more and then study 10 hours a day the 2 weeks before an exam. So yes, sometimes my pre-exam anxiety is my main motivation to get through everything. Of course, this one doesn’t work if your exam is in two days!
Test yourself. This one works wonders for me. And you know why? Because when I test myself and I actually see all the mistakes I make and it reminds me that I need to study more and I get so stressed that after taking a fake test I’m able to study for 5 hours straight in order to answer all the questions I did wrong aha
Take breaks. It’s totally OBVIOUS and NORMAL that if you’ve been studying for hours without taking a proper break you’ll lose motivation. You’re not a robot. If you just feel you’ve been re-reading the same page of your textbook over and over it’s just time for you to do something else! If you’re short on time, here are some « break taking » ideas. If after a 10-minute break you’re still not effective, I would recommend taking a longer break, like an hour, before starting to study again!
Discipline. Yeah, I know everyone talks about that so-called motivation and blah blah blah but the truth is : no one really wants to stay all day at home or in a library to study. No one really likes getting up at 6 am for a morning workout (or at least for me), but what keeps us going is self-discipline. Sometimes you gotta force yourself, one step at a time, and you’ll see that you’ll trigger your inner « study machine » without even noticing it. Note that this point can be linked to the first one!
Find yourself a study buddy. It isn’t really my thing since I prefer studying alone, but I know that for some people it really makes a difference. Of course, it has to be a study partner and not a gossip partner!
Study in a library or in a coffee shop. I personally prefer coffee shops. I don’t know why but actually having people around me kinds of pressures me to study and to focus and I feel guilty when I check my phone as if people were looking at me because I wasn’t studying. I don’t know if you sometimes feel the same way, but, try it anyway.
If you found these tips useful, please let me know by reblogging and/or liking this post :)

MEDICAL BOOKS
If you’re looking for some medical (non-textbook) books to read in your limited amount of spare time, check out some of my favorites below:
The House of God by Samuel Shem
A classic pre-medical school book. It details residency life in the 1970s. You can talk about this book with almost any medical student or attending. It is practically a medical school requirement.
Intern: A Doctor’s Initiation by Sandeep Jauhar
A more modern look into medicine residency intern year from the perspective of Cardiologist Dr. Sandeep Jauhar. Comes with the highs and lows you can expect. After having been through 6 months of residency, I would say it is very accurate.
Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story by Ben Carson. Just because I find Ben Carson incompetent as a politician does not mean I do not respect him as a doctor. He is a phenomenal pediatric neurosurgeon and this book details his story.
On Doctoring: Stories, Poems, Essays by Richard Reynolds
A book of stories and poems from doctors throughout time and also from famous poets and authors depicting their views of medicine.
Private Practice: In the Early Twentieth-Century Medical Office of Dr. Richard Cabot by Christopher Crenner
An interesting look into a Boston medicine clinic from the early 1900′s. With excerpts from old patient notes which I found very interesting.
And if you have an interest is something more dark:
Blind Eye by James B. Stewart
The real story of a doctor murderer from the 1990′s who killed multiple patients without getting caught for several years.
Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
The story of the World’s Fair in Chicago in the late 1800′s. A great look into the history of Chicago and the murderous doctor who roamed its streets.
And lastly:
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Just a great book in general. My favorite.
Suggested by other users:
The Making of a Woman Surgeon by Dr. Elizabeth Morgan
Suggested by http://thetay-in-the-757.tumblr.com
This book is my all time favorite, as I am a female aspiring to work in the healthcare system myself. Dr. Morgan chronicles her own journey in the male-dominated arena of medicine in the 1970s and 1980s, as she struggles to maintain an appropriate balance between remaining empathetic towards her patients and yet must toe the line of not becoming too emotionally involved with her patients so that she burns out, as well as maintaining her own femininity in a man’s world.
When Breath Become Air by Dr. Paul Kalanithi
Suggested by http://nandemokandemo.tumblr.com
When Breath Becomes Air is an autobiography written by an esteemed neurosurgeon who discovers he has Stage IV lung cancer in his final stages of residency. It appeals to not only medical students, with his profound impressions of cadaver dissection and his first life and deaths, but also to current medical professionals by questioning philosophical domains of mortality and what a meaningful life is, as well as to non-medical professionals with moving thoughts on family, life, death and meaning. It is not a novel to be missed by any person.

How to Study Like a Harvard Student
Taken from Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, daughter of the Tiger Mother
Preliminary Steps 1. Choose classes that interest you. That way studying doesn’t feel like slave labor. If you don’t want to learn, then I can’t help you. 2. Make some friends. See steps 12, 13, 23, 24. General Principles 3. Study less, but study better. 4. Avoid Autopilot Brain at all costs. 5. Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 6. Write it down. 7. Suck it up, buckle down, get it done. Plan of Attack Phase I: Class 8. Show up. Everything will make a lot more sense that way, and you will save yourself a lot of time in the long run. 9. Take notes by hand. I don’t know the science behind it, but doing anything by hand is a way of carving it into your memory. Also, if you get bored you will doodle, which is still a thousand times better than ending up on stumbleupon or something. Phase II: Study Time 10. Get out of the library. The sheer fact of being in a library doesn’t fill you with knowledge. Eight hours of Facebooking in the library is still eight hours of Facebooking. Also, people who bring food and blankets to the library and just stay there during finals week start to smell weird. Go home and bathe. You can quiz yourself while you wash your hair. 11. Do a little every day, but don’t let it be your whole day. “This afternoon, I will read a chapter of something and do half a problem set. Then, I will watch an episode of South Park and go to the gym” ALWAYS BEATS “Starting right now, I am going to read as much as I possibly can…oh wow, now it’s midnight, I’m on page five, and my room reeks of ramen and dysfunction.” 12. Give yourself incentive. There’s nothing worse than a gaping abyss of study time. If you know you’re going out in six hours, you’re more likely to get something done. 13. Allow friends to confiscate your phone when they catch you playing Angry Birds. Oh and if you think you need a break, you probably don’t. Phase III: Assignments 14. Stop highlighting. Underlining is supposed to keep you focused, but it’s actually a one-way ticket to Autopilot Brain. You zone out, look down, and suddenly you have five pages of neon green that you don’t remember reading. Write notes in the margins instead. 15. Do all your own work. You get nothing out of copying a problem set. It’s also shady. 16. Read as much as you can. No way around it. Stop trying to cheat with Sparknotes. 17. Be a smart reader, not a robot (lol). Ask yourself: What is the author trying to prove? What is the logical progression of the argument? You can usually answer these questions by reading the introduction and conclusion of every chapter. Then, pick any two examples/anecdotes and commit them to memory (write them down). They will help you reconstruct the author’s argument later on. 18. Don’t read everything, but understand everything that you read. Better to have a deep understanding of a limited amount of material, than to have a vague understanding of an entire course. Once again: Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 19. Bullet points. For essays, summarizing, everything. Phase IV: Reading Period (Review Week) 20. Once again: do not move into the library. Eat, sleep, and bathe. 21. If you don’t understand it, it will definitely be on the exam. Solution: textbooks; the internet. 22. Do all the practice problems. This one is totally tiger mom. 23. People are often contemptuous of rote learning. Newsflash: even at great intellectual bastions like Harvard, you will be required to memorize formulas, names and dates. To memorize effectively: stop reading your list over and over again. It doesn’t work. Say it out loud, write it down. Remember how you made friends? Have them quiz you, then return the favor. 24. Again with the friends: ask them to listen while you explain a difficult concept to them. This forces you to articulate your understanding. Remember, vague is bad. 25. Go for the big picture. Try to figure out where a specific concept fits into the course as a whole. This will help you tap into Big Themes – every class has Big Themes – which will streamline what you need to know. You can learn a million facts, but until you understand how they fit together, you’re missing the point. Phase V: Exam Day 26. Crush exam. Get A.

The End of The Beginning
So today I said goodbye to my life in Melbourne, and what a bittersweet feeling it was. I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that are ahead of me, but I also came to realise how much I was going to miss my life here and the connections with my beautiful friends. But I also know that distance does not determine friendship and I know that I will always have a home here. In thinking about the friendships and memories I have created over the last few years, I couldn't help but remember a quote from “Love Rosie”; “I’ve realised that no matter where you are, or what you’re doing, or who you’re with, I will always, honestly, truly, completely love you” and for me, this stands true for every one of the incredible people in my life who I am leaving behind.
Now time to move on to the next chapter...

Going to focus on these this year
how to avoid education burnout
have 3 achievable goals a day: having a laundry list of things to do everyday is super unrealistic, and you just end up feeling bad about yourself because you didn’t accomplish your goals for the day.
leave your sundays open: i love sundays because they’re my day to chill out and catch up on school work that i wasn’t able to finish during the week.
recognize when you’re at your emotional limits: forcing yourself to get work done when you are unable to comprehend your study material does not benefit anyone.
learn how to say no: people will ask you for your time and it will stretch you to the limit, whether it be at your job, in your extracurriculars, or in your personal life. know when to step back and say no.
take care of yourself physically: take breaks, go for walks, shower regularly, get enough sleep, eat healthy, see your friends
celebrate your accomplishments: go out to eat with friends after a big exam, indulge in a night off after a busy week with some netflix and wine
make a study plan beforehand: it can be daunting to see how much work you need to put in to a class or task beforehand, but this allows you to spread your work evenly so you don’t become overwhelmed.
learn how to ask for help: it is very rare that people make it through school, whether it be high school or university or any graduate program, without needing the advice of others or just a kind soul to vent to. find that person.
never forget your hobbies: you will need things that keep you sane. if you love to play music, write, play volleyball, or cook, make you sure you don’t lose these things. they will become your escape when times get tough.
log off from time to time: it is exhausting to be constantly connected to social media and your email. just physically disconnecting from these for a night to take care of yourself can really help you clear your mind.

The Start of Something New
Woohoo!!
As of next week I am a Pre-Med student studying in Canberra, Australia.
I have decided to start this blog as a way of keeping track of all of the struggles, triumphs and fun that is to be had over the following years as I embark on such an exciting journey.
In 10 days, I will pack up and move away from my home in Melbourne and take up residence on campus.
I am terrified, nervous, excited, worried, scared, and a whole other jumble of emotions which I’m sure are just the beginning of what is going to be a crazy time.
xx
