Here in Gaza after a cruel war, We are a family of 15—10 adults and 5 children. Every day is a battle for survival. Food is scarce, humanitarian aid is not reaching us, and my little nieces and nephews go to bed hungry. Among them is my sister, who is deaf, and another sister who has a newborn baby. They, too, are suffering in this crisis, and I’m doing everything I can to protect and provide for them.

We need your support to save us and to help us after the destruction that surrounding us here in Gaza.

Hurt people hurt people. Broken people break people. Abused become the abusers. Shoko Ieiri is aware of what the statistics say about her future. But sometimes in the quiet of the night, when her fan clicks become soothing and disconnect her from reality rather than being a droning annoyance, she wonders what becomes of the ignored. Surely if everyone ignores her and no one ever truly gets close to her, this means she could never become the one doing the ignoring, right? Would that count as breaking the cycle forged in blood started by the women in her family, dating back to when the only title on their gravestone was ‘wife of’? She isn't sure, but she also doesn't think she has much of a choice in whether or not she finds out. Her life has been steered by everyone around her for her entire life, from her parents, her friends parents, and even her friends. They may not be aware of it, but she is painfully so. Her lack of autonomy in a world she never asked to be in rubs at her skin until it chafes like an ill fitting suit, and she is unsure if it will ever fit.

WOO!! its Shoko's turn guys!! Im really excited for this one, but also a little nervous! I know some of the themes I'm going to explore in this are complicated. Theres so much nuance and difficulty that comes from themes such as this, being hurt by someone who is struggling severely with mental illness and trying to validate your own feelings but acknowledge their struggle too. Despite this, I am very excited to share this fic! Its honestly been so cathartic to write this one, similar to both of the other fics in this little series I'm doing. It feels like working through my own feelings from situations similar to Shoko's, and I hope theres a potential for this fic to make someone feel seen or understood : ]

I love thinking about artist AU’s because I think we can learn so much about an individual based on what medium they prefer. I especially love getting super super niche with them, would they be loyal to the mediums rules? Would they be contemporary? Would they exhibit or would they be more of a commercial artist? What meaning lies behind the progression of their practice?

Art is such a labour of love. It’s a love language, imo. Are they slow, painstakingly adding each detail, even if it isn’t hyperrealistic? Do they take their time with each dot, each stroke? Do they blend their colours, or do transitional shades? Do they blend at all? Do they explain their work, or let the viewer see it for themselves? What shapes their practice? Their muse? I have so many thoughts.

I saw a post talking abt how Zuko fought as the blue spirit in silence bc he couldn’t risk his voice being recognised, and how difficult it would’ve been for him to fight without yelling, which is very funny and also I agree, but I do have other thoughts on it!!!

I think this is a VERY VERY interesting theme to explore. Fire bending, as we know canonically, is all in the breath. Zuko, when bending, forces power into his breaths vocally. Azula and Iroh in comparison are very quiet when bending, exhibiting extreme breath control, and when Azula does start to lose control of both herself and her bending she becomes vocal. Screaming, grunting, yelling while bending.

Zuko fighting as the blue spirit both in silence and without his bending IMO is such a good way of highlighting where his strengths lie. He’s a good bender, of course, especially by the end of the show where he’s found a new source of strength, but he’s never been as proficient as other fire benders.

I think the blue spirit was such an easy role for him to slip into because while fighting, for once, he didn’t have to force his strength. He took time training with swords, hand to hand, etc because he knew he lacked in bending ability.

I like to think he found it easy to not yell while fighting as the blue spirit, because he felt confident. In his ability to fight, in the hidden identity aspect removing him from the role of the banished prince and the expectations that came with it. Putting a space between himself and the burn that has been used to identify and humiliate him many times.

I just think Zukos bending and fighting evolution is so neat….

He thinks of every single verse about lust, about sex, about identity, about homosexuality. He thinks of laws, the church, the government, the separation of church and government. He thinks about how Japan was never a christian place, how the word of god was spread rightfully. Maybe incorrectly, forcefully, his mind spins and he swallows and Shoko looks so firm and so sure of herself that when he tries to garner the strength to say hate the sin, love the sinner. But he can't.
