(And, a note: I keep track of fanfics I read on AO3 MUCH better than what I read on Tumblr, so while I have MANY favorite stories that were posted only here on Tumblr, I’m a dumbass who can’t find them again. So these are all AO3 stories.)

So. The very first one that came to mind is one that I consistently think of as canon and often forget that it isn’t actually part of the TV show because it’s just that good and in-character. It’s called No Scissors Required . It’s Joyce’s POV as she finds a notebook of Will’s with magazine clippings of his celebrity crush plus lots of drawings of Mike and it’s just so fucking sweet, Joyce is the Ultimate Mom. This fic is THE reason that I headcanon Will having a crush on River Phoenix.

Next one that came to mind was Thirteen. Let me forewarn you: THIS ONE IS HELLA FUCKING LONG AND A BIT SLOW. It’s one looooong chapter. But it’s Will’s POV and his characterization is fucking ON POINT. It goes all the way from memories of pre-season 1 to when they’re in late high school. It has mileven to start but (spoilers) byeler as endgame. It’s not exactly angsty, per se, but Will is pretty sad through a lot of it. Lots of pining, lots of good Mike/Will interaction. But the very best part of this fic (in my opinion) is the last quarter when we get Will-with-powers (again: minor spoiler alert), kisses, etc. So if you have some time on your hands, go for it.

Together Forever is short, sweet, adorable, and honestly just the best. Five-year-old Mike and Will plan to get married. What more could you ask for?

Crazy Together is one I re-read fairly frequently for the softness and fluff, though it has plenty of plot and cliff-hangers to keep me anxiously tapping my foot for the next chapter. Mike and Will, just post S2, lots of sleepovers, lots of pining, the Party is there, there’s a blanket fort and pancakes at one point, it’s really just a nice feel-good fic with a heaping dose of mutual pining. Will’s POV.

And I know we talked about it earlier, for for anyone who hasn’t read it, I just finished reading There’s a Starman Waiting in the Sky. This fucking fic KEPT ME UP AT NIGHT when I first started reading it because I think I first tuned in when chapter 3 or 4 was up? And homygod. She denies it, but the author is the absolute master of angst (but like not bad angst that just makes you sad and/or angry; the kind of just-enough angst that pisses you off but you still keep reading lol). Basically: Will goes to a Halloween party as Ziggy Stardust, Mike has a crisis and realizes he has a crush on Will BUT in the meantime Ziggy has found himself another BF, and Mike spends the next several months being like “craaapppp.” It’s great, go read it.

Those are my faves currently, there should be a lot more but like I said I’m really bad at keeping track of the fics I like. Hopefully I helped some people find fics they haven’t read yet! :) Thank you for the ask!

Wow! Of course! Byler is such a good ship and there’s some really good fics for it, I’d be happy to rec some! So… here we go! I’m sure this isn’t everything I’ve found so hmu if you want another list. Sorry if this is kind of messy.

I Know (AO3) by ChunkMunk

This was one of the first Byler fanfictions I ever read, and it honestly played a big part in drawing me into the ship.  Basically, Will is angry that Mike has been ditching him for El and confronts him. It ends up leading to something Will certainly didn’t expect. 

pictures come alive (AO3) by xxPayne

Written by one of my favorite Byler authors ever (which is probably why so much of their stuff is on this rec list). El learns something about Will in regards to Mike when his sketchbook is opened. Includes sibling El & Will as a large focus, which is amazingly adorable. 

Second Chances (AO3) by EmpressofTears

This one actually made me so happy I cried. An absolute favorite Byler fic. Will is a successful comic book writer and meets a little girl who loves his comics on the subway. Guess who the girl’s father is? Could it be… Will’s childhood best friend? ;)

No Scissors Required (AO3) by comfortablynumbonthepuzzle

A cute oneshot about Joyce discovering something about her son and his sexuality. There’s a nice little side of Byler but its mostly about how awesome Joyce is. It’s very sweet. 

Spin the Bottle (AO3) by thefourthlight

The title says it all. A cute spin the bottle fic featuring Aged Up Kids, a bit of drinking, fluff, and Will being cute and a bit angsty. A really great, short, feel-good type. 

it’s cold outside (AO3) by convergent

Featuring Sweater Paws, Heart Eyes, Cold Weather, and Cuteness. Honestly so adorable. No drama really, which usually I’m not that into, but it’s just too adorable not to read. 

Geography Notes and Doodles (AO3) by midnighteverlark

Another one of the fics that was a gateway for me into the Byler side of the ST fandom. Basically, Will gives Mike his geography notebook but finds out a bit too late he might have made a Large Mistake and given him his sketchbook instead. Hurt/Comfort is my favorite genre which is possibly why I love this fic so much. One of the best Byler fanfictions in my opinion. 

there’s nothing there to hide (AO3) by xxPayne

A cute coming out fanfiction featuring home videos, fluff, and Christmas time. One of my favorite Byler coming out fics. Definitely worth a read (or two in my case). A feel good fic with a small side of angst that gets resolved in the best of ways. 

love is a stranger (AO3) by xxPayne

If you’re in the mood to cry and have the reality of unrequited love hit you in the face like a frickin sledgehammer, I recommend this fic. In all seriousness, it is beautifully written. Will pines. Mike apologizes. That’s really all you need to know. 

another year over (and a new one just begun) (AO3) by xxPayne

Cute, fluffy first kiss oneshot with a side of jealousy. With New Years Eve coming up, this fic makes perfect sense to read! A very sweet feel good fanfic. 

Chaptered

A Hope to Cling To (AO3) by midnighteverlark

WIP, updated fairly regularly. A take on what would have happened if Mike had confessed something even he himself hadn’t realized in Episode 8 out in the shed. Perhaps one of the best WIPs I’ve ever read. It is realistic and intriguing and gives happiness to the characters and those who read it. 

there’s a Starman waiting in the sky (AO3) by the_angry_pixie

WIP. Will’s Halloween costume sends Mike into a Sexuality Freak Out. This fic literally rekindled my love of David Bowie. It’s written very well and is really, really, great. 

clear as day (AO3) by Phanicmode

WIP. A cute AU in which Mike finds a cutie in the library, notes are passed, and crushes are had. A side of Elmax but if that isn’t your thing it isn’t heavily featured as of yet. Very sweet and fluffy. :)

Galaxies colliding (AO3) by scalira

WIP. Crossover. Don’t know if this is your thing, but this is half Byer half Reddie (IT (2017)), and I love it too much not to include it. Parent Trap AU. That’s basically all you need to know. 

Flower Tutor (AO3) by beemovieisaworkofart

Complete. I admittedly haven’t finished this yet, but the concept is absolutely adorable. Will agrees to tutor Mike in Floral Art. Soft boys and art and flowers, what more can a Byler shipper ask for?

Longtime favorite of mine. One loooong chapter. Great characterization. Great through-the-years feel. Lots of the Party being the Party. I love Will in this. Also, fun fact: this fic is the reason I first started headcanoning Will-with-powers.

Undertow

Mike and Will kiss each other “for practice,” and Mike has a small breakdown because he can tell he’s a little too into it. Fluff. Angst. Lovely long descriptions of kissing.

Kiss It Better

Byeler through the years, starting in kindergarten and ending in college. Feels real. Very sweet. It helped me through The Tragic And Mysterious Disappearance of Season Three, Which Never Dropped For Some Reason

I read the first chapter of this aaaaaages ago, and it was recently recommended to me, and now it has 4 chapters! (Woot woot.) Basically: littlekid!byeler being sweet as all hell.

It’s Like Moonlighting

Robin and Steve, working at a video rental store, see Mike and Will come into the store. Robin’s gaydar immediately picks up on What’s Going On. Steve is clueless. Robin does her best to educate him. The truth is served in this fic. Plus I just love Robin being the somewhat disaster-lesbian aunt figure.

There’s a Starman Waiting in the Sky

Y’all knew I was gonna rec this one. Y’all know it kept me up at night when @the-angry-pixie was still writing it (it’s completed now). Y’all know I can’t handle angst for shit lmao.

How everything was positioned, and described, it made for an aesthetically pleasing story, for lack of better words.
