history.

adopted into a #very #white family when she was only a couple years old. maelys (pronounced my-lease) grew up a pageant queen in wichita, kansas! an overall kind of it girl too, mathletes & debate club, whole nine yards- mainly her mother's doing. it stretched her out pretty thin.

as a teenager, maelys found herself indulging in boys as a form of respite. well, BOY, singular- he was called sean. she was fully convinced they'd run off together to live happily ever after the moment she turned 18 and her mother had no say in the matter but that dream came crashing down fast when she got pregnant and he suddenly grew apprehensive. much to the chagrin of her mom, maelys went through with the pregnancy instead and gave the baby up for adoption in the end.

17 saw maelys leaving wichita for good. not for college, but for the simple fact that being there just made her too sad. she hopped around city to city, slumming it in motels. in hindsight, maelys would probably recall this as the worst year of her life. her postpartum took a massive toll on her, and she dealt with that by falling into not so good behaviors and addictions, namely cocaine & whatever she could do to get her hands on it.

when her money eventually ran out, it just so happened that she was in new york. and so, at the age of 20, she stayed. her first job back in wichita was at a wine bar owned by a family friend, so she sought out the same in new york. once she was good and settled (and most importantly, employed), she decided to go back to college. she eventually got a business degree in hopes of committing herself to a boring, stable office job with her own little cubicle to boot but she got about three years into her career before realizing it was bartending that she really loved.

so, she quit her day job. got back into it, not at infierno first but eventually she landed a bartending gig there at 28. been at it for six years too.

personality.

most people know maelys porter as a very vivacious and charming southern belle who'll just talk your ear off if you let her. she's always got this sunny, go-getter girl type disposition about her that gives off the impression that she's unbreakable (she's got her years in pageantry to thank for that) but, in reality, she is always flirting with a nervous breakdown. she's optimistic because she needs to be, because it needs to work out the way it does in her head.

she is endlessly ambitious, always looking for the newest way she can 'move up'. very organized and incredibly meticulous. she could truly gorge herself on high praise and accomplishments and accolades and it still wouldn't be enough. she's willing to do anything if it means winning, and she'll do it with a smile on her face (and yes, this includes stabbing even her closest friends in the back). once in a while, parts of her haughtiness will break through but she's worked carefully to make sure it's only visible up close.
