things weren't picture perfect growing up, but it seemed pretty damn close from the outside. tyler rowan grew up on the outskirts of a small town in kansas. her father was the professor at the local university, and her mother was a nurse at the hospital. tyler’s the youngest of five siblings, and by age 10, all of her siblings had grown up and moved out. what was left was pretty sad, in comparison to a loud, love - filled home , despite her mom & dad working long, and strange hours . but , of course , after they all left her alone with them , it was weird and empty and sad & strange . fights about money when her father lost his job over budget cuts & things out of his control & her mother falling out of love, and they stopped being the perfect family. they got divorced , and tyler lived with her mother in chicago shortly after – it’s where her mother grew up & tyler had to adjust quickly – which was becoming quite easy at this point , things changed so drastically , and so did tyler – changing herself as drastically as her surroundings changed.

moving to new york city at twenty - six , before living briefly in los angeles a few months prior, then -- chicago for about sixteen years . . . she's lived a few different lives that she loves to bring up after a joint or a drink , that she was a background actor on some new blockbuster movie when she lived in hollywood , that she hooked up with a famous actress & she won't tell you who it was . during her days in chicago --- she went to college and worked at a restaurant to cover the cost of rent and school . her degree was constantly changing , finally deciding on nursing , then dropping out immediately. moving to new york city , with hopes to maybe : get famous & cast in a tv show , but working as a server as her day / night job .

quick backstory: born in spain like 300+ years ago & was a prized ( ish ) guard of the volturi bc he has the ability to sense the abilities of others ! which is pre handy dandy if you’re like aro & like to collect people & their abilities yikes

so u kno, like the loyal & trustworthy spanish puppy he is, he’d travel around the world & basically abduct any human or vampire w a talent

& tbh it never really boded well w him, but he’s v dutiful & doesn’t really like conflict so he did as he was told & just kinda ... turned away during the more violent parts

like honestly before he was turned he was just this like 22 yr old spanish boy that would hand out roses to beautiful women ( & men ) on the street & play guitar

he’s basically like the poster boy for those men on the cover of those rlly cheesy romance novels ok he’s like th AT

& so like this gentle boy rlly was not made for the volturi lifestyle but he did it bc those were his buddies ( kinda )

but he eventually met carmen & that changed his entire wor LD ok ? like w OW literally she was the most beautiful person ever & he was shook & like ... was just like yep , her

so like he tried for a lil bit to balance work & pleasure, but carmen wasn’t super comfy w what eleazar was doing so eleazar was like o K i will not do it anymore !

so anyways he goes up to aro & somehow convinces him to let him leave the coven ? like tbh his power just wasn’t that useful anymore so aro was like ok i guess or like had a srs lapse in judgement but whatever our lil spanish lover got to leave

the two travelled for a while before finding the denali coven, & our lil lover boy became completely enamoured by the idea of vegetarianism ??? like wow ??? i don’t have to hurt ppl ? love not war ???

— BACKSTORY

ben is a long islander. his parents were immigrants from manila in the 1950s, they settled down in massapequa and had him in 1962. he is an only child which heavily factors into the way that he acts (inability to share, highly competitive, expects respect). he also grew up as a catholic, and went through the whole process of first communion, confirmation, and being an altar boy through high school. he refuses to really talk about his upbringing because it is not the cool, mysterious backstory that he wishes he could present to the world.

as soon as he was a legal adult, he wanted a fresh start. it was '80s, the drinking age in new york was still eighteen, and he was sick of the cookie-cutter suburbs, and wanted to do something bigger and better with his life. he moved to a shitty little apartment above a pizza joint (you won't regret a slice from pasquino's at three in the morning), and started barbacking at infierno. it was his first "real" job after having summer gigs through high school slinging an ice cream scoop.

within the first two years at infierno, he worked his way up from barback to bartender, quickly picking up skills wherever he had a shot at upward mobility. he continued on that path for the next FIFTEEN years! ben became the head bartender for infierno, and was a kind face to some regulars, to others he was a hard-ass with a penchant for giving newbies a hard time.

ben stayed in his shitty little apartment putting away the money he made over the years towards some big, secret project. to this day, his friends make a game of guessing what the hell he's working on, and he just shakes his head with a sigh and a smug little smirk (is it a boat? a pilot's license? a house in los angeles? stay tuned!). a stray cat eventually became his, and he became hers. named meatball for her tortoise brown coloring, and what he fed her from pasquino's spot downstairs.

with the opening of echelon, ben, depending on who you speak to, was either poached by or defected to the new restaurant from infierno. this was a bittersweet move, out of his position of head bartender but for a better paycheck and the prestige of a new culinary hot-spot.

all you need to know is that happy hour ended at 7pm, and yes it costs extra for a double even when you bat those long, luscious eyelashes at him.
