my advice to you is to never waste your time trying to fit into a club or hobby or any community who makes you beg for acceptance and approval just to participate when you could do the alternative—get involved in a niche and endangered hobby run primarily by old people.
i wanted to learn how to hunt ruffed grouse and train bird dogs so i sent an email to my local chapter of the ruffed grouse society explaining that getting into wildlife groups is intimidating to me because I’m trans
and all they saw was that someone under 60 wanted to learn to hunt grouse & several months into my mentorship I was told that like 7 old guys argued over me until they had to pick a number between 1 and 100 to decide who got to personally mentor me.
imagine vying for the acceptance of some gatekeeping weirdos when your mere interest could be inciting verbal combat among retirees

i wonder if culture is still recovering from the effect of the hipster era where obscure or strange taste was misconstrued as smugness, and like, yeah for sure in a lot of cases there was smugness involved, but also liking strange and weird things and things with small fan bases and have eclectic taste rules.

people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.

It’s such a bad look to keep being like “well actually this movie by a man did it better” but like Aliens addressed the intersecting themes of corporate capitalism, sexism, and mother-daughter relationships in 1986. Sarah Connor was institutionalised because of structural misogyny in Terminator 2 in 1991, what happened to her was covered up and nobody believed her account because she was a woman. Titanic depicted the crushing weight of patriarchy in a teenage girl being forced to marry an adult man and her mother’s complicity in that in 1997. I simply do not buy that in 2023 the Barbie movie is as far as I can expect a Hollywood blockbuster to go in attempting to address patriarchy. And every time a movie comes out that is actually marketed to women this narrative of it being groundbreaking is applied and erases vast swathes of earlier cinema and the contributions of women to those movies. It happened in 2017 with Wonder Woman and it’s happening again in 2023 with this thing.

one thing i'm not really tolerating is white middle class australian progressives/leftists being like 'wow they're soooo bad :/' at the united states when this country will probably shortly vote a resounding No to the Voice and be rightfully shamed as an embarrassing racist shithole on the international stage again. come on now. be realistic

1980: The Australian government founds the new free-to-air TV station 'SBS'. It quickly gains the nickname 'Sex Before Soccer' after some creative attempts to drum up audiences sees it become world's only government broadcaster to regularly televise pornography.
Introducing one such film, a station presenter famously quipped on air "Tonights movie contains plenty of nudity, sword fighting, and nude sword fighting".
To keep censors happy, the pornographic films would often not be listed in TV guides, instead scheduled as part of multi-hour anthology blocks under titles like 'Erotic Tales' or 'Eat Carpet', where they would be mixed in with obscure international movies. As a result, to this day there is a generation of men in Australia with an unusually robust knowledge of the European arthouse films, gained while waiting for porn to begin.

I feel bad arguing with kids, y'know?

No to wade into The Oppenheimer Discourse (but doing it anyway): The film makes a lot more sense as an allegory for Nolan's own feelings on his cinematic career thus far.
I.E. He made a huge blockbuster hit in the Dark Knight Trilogy, that he hoped would change how we perceive mainstream art, but instead contributed to the slow destruction of his industry.
Like, Chris probably cries himself to sleep thinking about those Scorsese Superhero Movie quotes.
#There's also the whole thing about his younger brother's code name being Oppenheimer#We always talk about Jonathan Nolan BUT MATT NOLAN IS THERE!!!!!

One of the minor yet very cool things to come of Barbenheimer marketing cycle has been seeing how people perceive Gerwig's and Nolan's personal movie-watching habits.
Like, there's this really bizarre, sexist idea that men only watch Criterion Collection fare and women stick to "chick flicks".
And then during their film's publicity tours, Gerwig has openly discussed her incredibly dense filmic knowledge spanning generations. Meanwhile, Nolan is blowing film bros preconceptions by admitting he cast Devin Bostick after seeing him in the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid films.
I just love have both directors looked the gender stereotypes of the cinephile dead in the eyes and challenged them in their own unique ways.

Adding two random tidbits
WB already had a movie they planned to release on July 21, before they moved Barbie onto that date: Coyote vs Acme, the fourth Looney Tunes Live Action movie (after the two Space Jams and Back In Action), that's set up as a comedic courtroom drama where Wile E. Coyote comes to the Real World to - I shit you not - sue the ACME Corporation over faulty and dangerous explosives. As much as I love Barbenheimer, WB ROBBED US OF TWO WILDLY DIFFERENT MOVIES ABOUT THE DANGERS OF EXPLOSIVES PREMIERING ON THE SAME DAY.
Also, on the point of studios trying to recreate Barbenheimer again, from @incipientdreamer
While we're all talking about both the WGA/SAG strikes and Barbenheimer, I hope everyone realises that the entire reason this exists is because Christopher Nolan stood up to Warner Bros against pushing their entire cinematic slate onto streaming in 2021, by taking his next film to another studio.
Then, as an act of petty revenge, they decided to deliberately move their single biggest movie of 2023 (and arguably WB's biggest non-Batman/Harry Potter movie in DECADES) directly onto his release date.
So no, the Barbie Marketing isn't "so good it helped another movie". The Barbie Marketing Machine was specifically designed to get back at someone who dared to stand up against WB executives.
It was a calculated move of malice by soulless corporate fuckeroonies.
#we could have had ACMEHEIMER#or OPPENCOYOTE#never forget what they took from us#barbenheimer#sag strike#wga strike#support the wga#sag aftra#barbie#oppenheimer#looney tunes#wile e coyote#morbius
